July 24 will be the one year anniversary of the massive Gigaleak that turned so many things Nintendo fans thought they knew about SNES history upside down.

With all the fans out there with deep pockets--or at least fans with loose pockets who would gladly donate to such a cause--why on earth hasn't anyone tracked down one of the computers, workstations, or whatever Nintendo used back then, bought it, and compiled the early LttP code that was in the leak?
>>
>>7945495
i personally enjoyed the gameboy lotcheck much more than the snes and n64 proto stuff, seeing prototype localizations that we never received and even games we thought were 100% lost like pokemon picross was incredible
>>
>>7945495
No news? It would be nice if we received another set of files. Spaceworld Pokemon was the best, I was there for the original Unown-Hiroshima thread, bless these anons.
>>
>>7945495
What an absolute fucking treasure trove this was.
>>
>>7945495
Man, it's been a year already?
I remember checking these threads obsessively. It was way better than just a random proto being found, having access to the actual development files and folders is crazy
What's even crazier is that stuff like Koizumi? talking about testing 3D games with the FX before going on OOT and we actually found the freaking models for that. How crazy is that?
Also, does someone have the Costanza shitpost made with these models?
>>
>>7945527
Yeah same. Though the Game Boy family is more my bread and butter anyways.
>>
What was the oldest file in the gigaleak? I know some date from the late 80's.
>>
>>7945904
I think the oldest stuff is related to Dragonfly for SNES, the early prototype of Pilotwings. This is from February 28 1989. It's also unedited lol.

>>7945836
I remember those (the models, not the shitpost). They looks jank as fuck, of course, but it's fun to see where these people got their start making 3D models.
>>
>>7945965
Well yeah, they were meant to test 3D combat with the FX chip, so basically they weren't even meant as a concrete project, just the possible beginnings of one
But this test has basically layed out the foundation of OOT when he later joined the project IIRC
How crazy is that?
>>
>>7945974
Pretty crazy. This type of content is my favourite. Seeing cut/early content really humanizes the developers. Every cut content thread there's some anon that's like "I don't care about shit that was cut because it was cut for being bad". They don't understand that it's not interesting because you wish green stickman Link was playable, it's interesting to be able to see the strings being pulled behind the scenes, how development progressed, etc. and speculate over what it might mean.
>>
>>7945836
>having access to the actual development files and folders is crazy
I STILL have to pinch myself and remind myself I didn't dream saving a whole directory of Nintendo development folders to my desktop, with the person folders of developers whose names I can then recognize in the credits of some of my favorite games, where the files are dated back to the SNES era. And development tools! Actual tools they used in-house to create graphics! It's like holy hell, man, did we luck out or what? And it hurts when you realize it may never happen again and we never get answer to some of the biggest mysteries (e.g. Super Donkey).

Goddamn, has it been a year already? Incredible.
>>
>>7946827
Doesn't it drive you crazy that we may never get answers about that hole and so many other things in the leak? Knowing how the Japanese are about piracy, and considering how this information was obtained (illegally), I don't know if there's a chance of even a former employee who worked on LttP opening about the early map if asked.

Why would a Japanese programmer write fuck you in English and not use the Japanese term? Did he think he was being sneaky and no one would notice this way?

Why would he need to be sneaky? His friends probably laughed at it.

Why would a baby shitpost on 4chan?

This is the case for most other languages used in most places Mr.American

I don't know if anyone has a legit list, but I can list what I remember
- Two Yoshi's Island prototypes, most of the levels are not even complete and have rough drafts of what the gimmicks will be. Originally was a wizard baby instead of baby Mario
- Yoshi Island Alpha called "Donkey"
- Mario 64 assets and part of the source codes. We got the missing numbered levels in the game's debug level select with ressources, they're all test stages. We got Luigi, it was glorious. A scrapped enemy was restored from the code
- OOT assets and parts of the source. Some old proto enemies were found and restored. Found out that the Ikana Well and Spider House in MM was supposed to be in Ura Zelda. Unused boss rush. Unused SGI renders along with HQ versions of all of them. We also got the untextured (was probably also going to use a SGI render) of the old strange assumed to be temple of time picture that floated around. Found SGI of a early really small temple of time. We also have HQ renders of the manual stuff
- HQ renders of cart template, full picture of Star Fox 64 cart art (was previously never found) and such random assets
cont.
>>
>>7953603
>>
>>7953603
>>7953634 cont.

- Star Fox 64 uncompressed voice clips
- Full source of Dr.Mario 64 including a scrapped Japanese version
- Some random Animal Crossing stuff, very little research made?
- Full Wario Land 4 source I believe, unsure
- A crazy amount of development sprites for Super Mario World, maps, different Yoshi designs, Grandpa Yoshi, unused enemies, one being a walking canon that was reused in yoshi's island
- Also a crazy amount of ALTTP ressources. A deku tree looking tree, old maps
- I believe we have the full "git" (I forgot the old versioning software they used) repo of Starfox 2 including weird utilities
- Weird utilities like spriting utilities, a tool to make scrapped yoshi island sprites and the likes
- NES roms of some unreleased games I heard, like the full version of an Hockey Sim? In full English
- GB lotcheck, includes lost unreleased and unannounced localizations, Pokémon Picross. Tomato's Adventure GBC
- A shitload of Pokemon source code, nearly all of them, some even having all of the repo intact
- Broken repo? of Link's Awakening or just lots of different roms
- SGI test that turned into Mario Kart 64
- Mario Kart protos and alpha before it became Mario Kart
- Pilotwing Alpha assets (Dragonfly was it called?)
And many, many more stuff that I forget at this point

Unrelated, but recently some OOT beta assets were found in the overdump of a F-Zero proto
>>
>>7953638
>>7953634
shame i never played yoshis island or mario 64 back then so the leaks dont mean a whole lot to me, but the OOT leaks sound interesting, I'll have to check out TCRF to see if they organized their new pages for the gigaleaks

Small correction to
- Weird utilities like spriting utilities, a tool to make scrapped yoshi island sprites and the likes
I forgot a few details
It's some sort of weirdish map the tool was made for
Also, Yoshi Island had some beautiful stage select screen that was more animated. Some anon made some fantastic 1080p wallpaper out of it. I don't have it anymore
>>7953648

The story is known. Game was completely finished and Nintendo asked Alphadream if they could remake it for the new GBA system, and they did. It was called Gimmick Land on GBC

Of course they were retooled. It looks like Ura Zelda was pretty much completely cancelled in development, but further material needs to be gotten in the future (probably never again) as it was just what was part of iQue leak, so who knows
Otherwise, what part of "dungeon pieces that has various rooms and entrances, miniboss rooms, small puzzles and boss rooms from all dungeons" you don't understand?
>>
>>7958127
>Thanks but some of those rooms are different than in MM.
Yes? They rejiggered them for Zelda Gaiden later on down the line. Shit happens all the time.

>>
>>7958180
Datestamps, silly.
>>
>>7958180
Nintendo gave their iQue division all the raw material. Things from various points of development from SEVERAL games were there, not just Ocarina of Time. Early work in progress maps for Link to the Past, for example. And they still had their original datestamps on them. From the 80s and 90s, not the 00s or 10s.
>>
>>7958126

Then what I'm looking for are screenies of said datestamps. These dev kits probably didn't have an internal clock like consoles started having after PS2.

There is a graphic for the map screen calling the dungeon Evil Goddess Din Statue instead of Spirit Temple. For whatever reason and Discord bullshit,
tcrf refuse to acknowledge it because we're the alt right (they were apprehensive about documenting the gigaleak altogether because it was leaked here). The implication given the presence of Mario and Donkey Kong sprites in it seemed to be that it was a prequel perhaps themed around Mario and Donkey Kong, though this is just speculation based on assets in the ROM and the name Super Donkey. People mostly say that because Clefairy was Red's starter in the original manga. However, he gets a Pikachu in chapter 3 and from that point on Clefairy and Pikachu receive pretty much equal focus. Pikachu was always a very popular Pokemon.

I think the biggest indicator that it was meant to be Jigglypuff is that, when you transfer a Jigglypuff from gen 1, you get a completely useless held item called the Polkadot Bow (which is identical to the Pink Bow you can find in-game, just with a slightly different name). It was probably meant to be Jigglypuff's Light Ball equivalent.

What's the story here?
>>
>>7966518
Jigglypuff was introduced as a regular character in the anime just a couple of months before Yellow version released. Given that the anime also did a Pokemon Snap tie-in episode a couple of episodes after Puff was introduced (although Pokemon Snap was horribly delayed), it's likely Jigglypuff was introduced into the anime specifically to promote Pink Version. But the game was scrapped after those episodes were already in production.

For all the parts of Nintendo that I hate, I have to respect that, because quite a lot of developers used to save almost nothing at all, certainly not back in those days. A lot of the kind of stuff found wouldn't have been very financially valuable at all for future endeavors, yet it was preserved.

>image of a boo crucified
This is news to me. Please post it.
>>
>>7945987
Yeah, for prototypes in general, it is really neat to see a game that you're used to seeing as a fully polished retail product during a state when it was still buggy and had placeholders etc. Sure, nowadays it is common to see messy, unfinished games, or even see shitty broken old games, but seeing a grade-B or grade-A title when it still had glitches right out in the open or when they were still experimenting with designs and layouts and whatnot really makes the game feel like a man-made product as opposed to the sanitized version you're used to.
>>
>>7967171
I guess there was no story.
>>
Nintendo should just release older stuff to the public. Not code, but history with their company, the work that went into stuff, etc.
Nintendo Power interviewing Shig isn't enough. There's no valid or logical reason to be so stuck-up. They don't have to be faggots like Sega, but being faggots like Nintendo is just bad.
>>
>>7969290
Sadly it might not really be worth it for them. They'd probably have to get their legal department to clear whatever they release (who knows what stolen or whatever stuff might lurk within experimental and early shit), as well as marketing it in a way that won't result in mothers calling in and complaining that Billy is crying because the game keeps crashing if he pauses the game too many times or goes to a corrupted screen after completing level 3.
>>
>>7969302
The company prints money these days. They are the premier company in vidya. The most history, the highest level of crazy shit. They can do it without ruining their name or jeopardizing their IP and rights.
There was never a reason not to release info on assets from SMW or LttP. What are they afraid of, a rom hacker hacking in old sprites and putting the hack on romhacking?
And don't gimme that "copyright protection" shit, Pixiv and Gelbooru are loaded down with Zelda and Peach and Link getting assfucked.

Sometimes japs are retarded.
>>
>>7969314
I think he means that Nintendo might be worried that some of their unused concepts might get aped by other developers or wannabe (i.e. indie) developers. That might be a gray area as far as copyright is concerned, I don't know. Either way, I'm sure Nintendo themselves sometimes peruse unused assets and concepts from their old games for inspiration. SMW's Yoshi literally came from an unused idea that had been around since the original SMB.
>>
>>7969318
They can curate what they release, but being a bit more open might have prevented people from wanting to hack them so badly.
Nintendo is infamous for being assholes at times about things, It comes off as cold and regressive. The official story on how OoT or Super Metroid were made, as an open discussion, are long-overdue. Not just "oho, i was in a park in Kyoto one day and saw children cutting dandelions with sticks and that why you cut grass in ALttP". "I used to climb around on rocks when I was a little shit so that's why rocks fall on you in the Death Mountain area in The Legend of Zelda, ooowooo!"
Yeah okay Shig. Now tell us about how you read Tolkien's books in college, and how you applied that experience to building a game world of your own. Don't care about the mountain trout/carp jumping and spitting at you when you were 4 years old. What's the REAL story behind taking a mushroom to grow larger?

He's still a bit of a side character in there. Reason he got more popular than Clefairy is that the manga author didn't make him raunchy like Clefairy and instead kept him "cute."

>(who knows what stolen or whatever stuff might lurk within experimental and early shit)
If it's just developmental stuff which wasn't in the final product, a lot of that should be just fine. A lot of devs use assets from other games as placeholders during development, for instance Blood, which used some of the monster from Doom. They were never meant for the final product, it wasn't even meant to be seen that way by anyone (the alpha was leaked by a computer tech), it was just until they had their own monster graphics done.

In Japan, there's a dedicated Nintendo museum of game archives they had.

However, you need to get accredited access from Nintendo. It's in a storage room with an AC maintaining about 23C to 24C of room temperature. One light in the corner is blinking, probably close to end of life and needs replacing.

The vault also contains some metal cabinets with files and documents, consisting of drafts and reports on what parts of the games need to be changed. They're stored pretty well, with hardly any creases found on the papers except in the corners.

You can go visit the vault during the weekdays at 9AM to 11AM and 2PM to 4PM Japan Time.
>>
>>7974024
>there's a dedicated Nintendo museum
Hold on, I thought that was just in the planning stages. Is there already one and they're building another?
>>
>>7967582
What evidence has there been for Clefairy, other than the pedantic "um, manga?", which was around years before the ideas for Yellow and Pink were conceived.

>>7969432
How does this favor Clefairy, in particular? Jigglypuff is also right there.

>>7969737
This bullshit or you serious? Source if so, please.

I have no skin in the game for Jigglypuff. I'm just genuinely curious about why there's a consensus for Clefairy being planned for Pink rather than Jigglypuff.

Yeah. The build switch for Pink in the Yellow sources doesn't actually change anything. It's clear they dropped the idea super early on.
>>
The SpaceWorld '97 leak will always be the best to me. I got the internet in early 1999 when I was 11, so I was exactly the age to have been swept up by Red/Blue and the speculation on Gold/Silver
>>
>>7969950
I believe the written summary of the status of the data tapes indicated that a number of them were corrupted or otherwise couldn't be readily backed up. It also isn't clear if the hacker managed to download everything.
The argument against most of it having already been released is the randomness of this. Like, why those couple of random Yoshi's Island builds? You'd have thought there's either have been a whole lot more, like the full dev archive, or less (like maybe one or two release candidates). Instead it seems to be one random mid-development build, given the timing likely one of the last "rough sketch" builds before they started seriously nailing down the gameplay and level designs. Plus there are screenshots out there from a cartridge which has a slightly earlier build, so you would've thought that build, which was apparently put to a proto cart and sent out in some capacity, maybe to a foreign Nintendo branch, would've been in their internal tape archive.
>>7970034
Yeah, but I am sure Nintendo legal would want to review over things to make absolutely sure that nothing like the Capcom thing would happen. And given the age of some of the assets, they'd probably determine it would be too tricky to evaluate and probably not generate enough money for the effort.
>>
>>7974997
(Sorry, there were two mid-dev builds; was there also one fairly late build?)
>>
>>7974024
Why would you just go on the internet and lie like that?
>>

I mean koizumi is nintendos mvp. This guy made the majoras mask story and subplots and was probably the reason for even more stuff during oot and shit. I mean he was so good that miyamoto that retard gave him mario instead of zelda. But koizumi wants to tell storys instead of making jump and runs. Directed 3d worlds and then never again because muh story bad.
Well he is now on the path to becoming the next ceo.
Still just one zelda game man. Even 2d, just one.

>>7976205
Koizumi's dad use to be Japan's Prime Minister as well, it's the only reason why Nintendo has any special freedoms that other Japanese companies don't have.

If Koizumi wasn't at Nintendo they would of killed off their hardware team after BOTW and other then the few remaining 3DS games they had left they will be reserved on mobile gacha games like everyone else, but instead Koizumi single handily saved Japan's console market, strictly because Koizumi's dad use to be Japan's Prime Minister.

A lot of concept art is developed with the intention of pushing the limit. Rather than the developers unintentionally censoring themselves by playing it safe, they'll leave it up to the publisher on where to draw the line. Stuff like Crucified Boo can used as a negotiating chip with the publisher later on. If another aspect of the game is controversial (but not as controversial as Crucified Boo), you can "comprimise" and cut Boo. Warren Spector has talked about this in regards to Epic Mickey. They created concept art that they knew Disney wouldn't approve, but it ultimately gave them greater freedom than self censoring.
>>
>>7977971
I see... you know, I never thought of it that way, but that does make a lot of sense of why concept art is often way more exciting than what actually ends up in the product.
