been playing Revenge lately after playing a bunch of 3. There are pros and cons but I feel like they made the AI a lot more interesting to race against at least. Even in the first few races they feel way more active and like they're really trying to fuck with you, which in turn makes it more satisfying when you take them out. The shortcuts I've been finding interesting too, I feel like they're not always in your best interest to take on burning laps if they don't give you any opportunity to gain boost, so you gotta pick and choose which ones are worth it to get that gold. I've been warming up to the crash mode, I initially didn't like it but I've been finding it a little more challenging to get gold overall. In 3 you pretty much just need to make sure you get that 4x multiplier and blow up in a good spot. revenge crash mode I've found you have to think slightly more about not just how you're going to get to the 2nd area of targets but when you actually want to do that and how to maximize your damage before then. Idk they're both pretty fun

Honestly I am surprised anyone else remembers the game. While the handling is a bit twitchy for my liking you are right the OST is very much that late 90's techno/trance that was extremely popular for british racing games of the time due to, well techno and the like being popular in the country at the time. See also: why DnB was used for the likes of rollcage and wipeout as that was what the british were dancing to at the time.

Mine is 16 seconds and yours is 46 seconds. Also you can only cram so much bitrate into 3mb so you need to keep the resolution small so the ugly part of it shows way less. Bitrate doesn't play well with jaggies and unfiltered textures, mine is being played in D3D and yours doesn't look like it. Also that keyboard steering wtf.

After lots of thought I think I prefer the PC version of HP2 over the PS2 version. It mostly boils down to the subtle difference in handling model which feels - to me at least - that bit more consistent on PC so my enjoyment of the driving is more and ultimately that is the entire point of any racing game.
>>
>>7605946
Moto Racer is fun...until you ride the dirt bikes.
>>
How was this game? Any thoughts?

I played CART Fury on PS2 but that is basically Hydro Thunder with open wheel cars.
>>
>>7593128
Not retro but I can't get enough of PGR4. No game captures the spirit of driving quite like it even though its more arcade than sim it puts forza/turismo to shame with how unique each car feels. I was playing with the 911 and you can feel the suspension loading up in corners and somehow sense when the rear is breaking loose. No other racer even comes close to the excitement of PGR literally the only reason I keep my 360 around.
>>
>>7608759
The entire series is good
>>
>>7608823
True, i've not played 1 and 2 in a while so I might track those down seeing as they play on 360 BC.

Apparently it's Bill Gates favourite game so he's not totally unhuman. Only way I would take his vaccine would be If he promised another PGR.
>>
>>7608759
On top of this PGR4's graphics are insane to me even today. I cannot fucking wait until it can be emulated well, especially because the load times for the game are atrocious on the 360.
>>
>>7608759
I was just thinking of revisiting this game again. I think this would be my first time playing it with manual transmission if I came back to it.
>>
>>7608904
Yeah the graphics are solid and the sound is amazing too especially if you play with surround and hear other cars coming up from behind. They nailed the engine sounds and you can hear the turbos/blow off valves which is cool compared to gran turismo where the cars sound like vacuum cleaners.

Every time i play its like a shot of adrenalin and i sweat profusely. Better than sex if you ask me.
>>
One thing that bugs me about PGR (and I guess MSR, if we're going to keep it retro) is the nature of earning Kudos.

I would prefer to just race cleanly and smoothly but you're encouraged to take risks to earn Kudos at the possible expense of position.

what's the racing thread's take on the TOCA series? TOCA 1 was the first PSX game i got and i played it religiously, was terrible at it since i didn't understand the concept of braking but i loved the ton of ridiculous cheats you could activate like raining literal cats and dogs and driving a tank
the race driver series was also pretty fun from what i remember, shame it morphed into GRID then died of GRIDS

What is the worst, most boring, most mind-numbing kind of racing and why is it circuit racing?
>>
>>7617267
Depends, do you mean lap based or real life circuits? Either way, 6th and 7th gen proved that open world is a meme most of the time and Gran Turismo made real life circuits soulful.
>>
>>7617231
Just testing the NTSC version of toca 2 on ps1 at default cpu clocks it runs at 20fps and below lol.

>>7617267
Circuit racing isn't boring in of itself, it is sim racing that is boring.
>>
>>7617272
>>7617279
Lap-based circuits that are just empty open areas that allow you to see half the track ahead of you without any surprises are outright depressing. It just doesn't hold up against the thrill of guessing where a sharp turn on an incline in a rally track will end up or if a sinuous tunnel in a city/togue track will spit you out right in front of a steep decline that will send your car flying.
>>
>>7617298
You could've just said rally stages are the best and we would all understand instead of being a fag beating around it
>>
>>7617321
Rally stages really are the best but the point is about circuit racing.
>>
>>7617328
The feeling of tackling a rally stage blind adapting to danger on the fly gives a nice sense of adrenaline, but well made circuits (fake or real) is like a really well constructed rollercoaster that flows really well. Open world can be good if your name is Midnight Club and the checkpoint layout is dragging you through clever routes and set pieces in a giant urban playground.

Around 30 hours of playtime so I can give a review about it.

The car building system is the best feature of the game, you can create wacky car combinations, even more than TXR. I mean, you can make MR2-style mid-engine city bus with V12 Ferrari engine.
The most glaring problem of the game is it has both problems of RPGs and Racing games, that makes major turn-off to the opposite fans.
For RPG fans:
>The car handling is a bit weird and takes a while to get used to.
>You have to win every race to proceed, or you'll get a game over.
And for Racing fans:
>Random "battle" encounters everywhere you go.
>You have to go to specific place and talk to specific person to proceed the story, some even by chance. (I'm currently stuck because of this).
>After not playing for a while, you forgot where you are on the story, and more importantly your current objective. This is the main reason I struggle to continue playing my saved games on JRPGs.

They haven't done shit in the grand scheme of things. EA promotes NFS on all of the major places you are likely to see it - a couple two-bit streamers does not inspire people to go play games, especially not the ones you can't actually buy (and as we all know twitch donators love to pay).

Rage Racer is really just hitting that spot for me lately /vr/os. The soundtrack is amazing, the track design, while not abundant in choice, takes a while to master, and you gotta change the way you think about them when the reverse GP comes. The overall vibe too is really just, idk. R4 is all glowing sunsets, radiant blue skies, or twinkly dark nights, RR has more interesting lighting conditions - sometimes it's just kind of a dreary overcast day. The collision detection/handling can definitely suck my balls though.

Any of you fags ever get a problem with directx games that freeze other programs that are also using directx, like music players? I'm trying to run a game with a higher quality version of its ost in a media player in the background, but when I switch to the game, the player stops, and when I switch to the player, the game (and its audio) freezes. Are they using the same dll and can't function at the same time?
>>
>>7625123
It certainly feels more industrial than R4. You'll love the third GP. It'll fuck your shit up if you make exactly two mistakes or more.
>>
>>7627049
Honestly the biggest challenge in the game has to come from the other cars. You think you have a corner figured out with the car you're using, but the only problem is, there's 2 cars there and you can't afford to tap into them at all, especially if it's during/just before an uphill part. Overtaking feels like a huge W just because it's one less to worry about.
>>
>>7627119
By the way you can't win the game with the objectively best looking car (Gnade) The first two places are a nightmare to take over when the fucking Lizard truck is in the lead. You hit anything once with less than an entire lap to recover and you might as well restart.

>Static died on November 1, 2014 in Landers, California, three days before his 49th birthday. He had consumed half of an oxycodone pill as well as alcohol that morning before going to bed with his wife. She woke up later that day to find that he had died in his sleep. His family issued a statement stating that rumors of his death being drug-related were false, noting that he and Wray had stopped using illicit drugs in 2009. An autopsy later confirmed that Static had died of multiple prescription drug toxicity, consisting of the painkillers oxycodone, hydromorphone, and the anti-anxiety medication alprazolam combined with alcohol, though the report also noted that years of past "chronic prescription drug and alcohol abuse" was a contributing factor.

Sony's controllers have always been built to take abuse, though the sixaxis was a bit flaky.
>>
>>7631893
>Sony's controllers have always been built to take abuse
They really aren't, the ribbon cables that connect the contact pads are flaky as fuck and oxidise or just simply break over time, I've had sealed ps1 and 2 controllers which come dead. Primary symptom of the oxidisation progressing is random inputs being pressed or one over and over again. dualshock 1-3 have this problem and they didn't fix it until the fucking ds4 (which has it's own problems)
>>
>>7632063
I've been using a dualshock 3 I've dropped a few times for over a decade and it works fine. None of my own ever broke for the time I had them.

That is just the reality of the genre - you need depth and as such require 3D which sadly means a lot of solid 2D titles are kinda crap these days and are mostly regarded highly solely for the nostalgia. It is easy to forget how massive the first ridge racer was on PSX because of the 3D (that and sorta being an arcade port).

An arcade-perfect port.

It isn't - it has reduced graphical detail and runs at half the framerate. It was however the closest home 3D was to the arcade at the time by a huge margin.

Sure turbo is much closer (really it just the reduced opponent count) but that came about 5 years later. OG ridge racer blew everyone's mind but to call it arcade perfect is misleading.
