ugh, fine

in mame 0.198 they added special effects to 1945K III (inspired by the strikers series which I 2-alled in a week btw, I'm a fast learner if you didn't know)
it's a really cool game where you memorize safe spots, way harder than stupid cave games where you can just dodge everything blind

here's a video which I can neither confirm nor deny the source of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-R5lkN3PGY

needless to say it was a piece of cake to clear, after all I have 7000 hours of experience playing shmups, not to mention my time playing fighting games which helped train my reaction skills.

I used 15 hz autofire most of the time but for the 3rd boss you need to point blank using 30 hz or else you obviously won't kill him before his hardest pattern.

Does anyone here have love for Hellsinker? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dng4rCV0FIo

I was super into Hellsinker back in 2009-2010, when I was at my rock bottom in life. I was really, really good at shmups back then and could 1CC most casual shumps after my first attempt or two. Hellsinker really drew me in. It's something else. I played it for a couple months.

The aesthetics are just so unbelievably weird. Everything is absolutely alien, dysphoric, and weirdly "womb-like." There is an absolutely excessive amount of status bars and gauges, and even the gameplay is somewhat unconventional.
>>
>>7586598
Sounds like you 2-alled the whole Striker trilogy back in the day
>>
>>7586598
Gotta post an even better Hellsinker video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFlGjFPatSk

It is literally impossible to watch this and not get pumped up.

BTW, you may wonder how many of those status bars are actually relevant. The answer is a surprising amount of them!

It has compelling gameplay and surprisingly high production values, but EVERYTHING about the game is "strange," for lack of a better word. Definitely worth a try, though.

It's like a really good shmup designed by someone who has never played a shmup before. It's an interesting take.

No need. You tell good players by how they talk about shmups.
I'm more of a survival player anyway. So this leads us to auto-fire, what hz do you use? Do you even understand optimal setups? Heh, doubtful let me explain since you asked.

The optimal fire rate, described as the fastest consistent stream of bullets shot from the bottom of the screen, changes depending on your power level, as you have different bullet numbers on screen
This gets more complicated in other games like KKK Tiger;
Helpful buttons include: optimal rate for recovery, low power red; optimal rate for low power blue, and optimal rate for max power blue
Shit like this actually makes a difference
This may get more complicated in horis where you tend to not hang around the leftmost part of the screen, but rather around the middle-left area
I do believe people would have an easier time with these games if they made use of this
Forgot to add: Daioh's default turbo button isn't even 30hz, so you're losing a lot of point-blanking potential. They give you an awkward in-between, not an optimal rate, nor the fastest rate. This happens a lot in games with included auto and it blows

In the first stage focus on getting the three way spread, a shield, and your little option helpers. Afterwards the only bell you'll need to worry about is replenishing your shield when it disappears. The spread is good for all the enemies crowding the screen while the charge can be used effectively on bosses or large enemies.

I can't remember if you can have shot and ground bomb on the same button but I recommend it if you can. I never saw a use for the punch attack; it got me killed more often than not.

Magic power ups give you very useful option fire
If you dont care about score, only use the charge attacks for polarity based ennemies
Otherwise just use your shot and destroy everything with

Retroarch with run-ahead can get you 1 frame of lag in every shmup FBNeo supports. He doesn't give the way to test it, but you can advance the game one frame at a time by pressing k while the game is paused (press p). Basically, what you'd want to do is hold down the shot button on your controller, advance the game frame by frame, until you see your sprite shoot. Then eliminate the frames (increase run-ahead by 1 each time) until you only have to advance one frame to see your sprite shoot. Other than that, standard MAME with low-latency mode on and v-sync off is as good/better than other options like ShmupMAME or GroovyMAME.

I do this to intentionally make you pig scum feel unwelcome. Out of hundreds of posts, you focus on just this tiny portion... Says a lot about you and what triggers you. You will NEVER be seen as anything but cancer to the shmups community in Ultramania. The actual players that shield you get shit, too. Deal with it.
Don't worry, though. The overall westie community is terminally pig'd, you don't need to feel threatened by us. If you don't like being reminded constantly of your status as as undesirable poser, just look away and hang around the bigger places made for you. I promise I won't come from under your bed to do mean things to you at night.

Playing shmups? I'll leave that to gus, clp and softdrink. I have to make a new twitch analytics pie-chart, more reddit and farm screenies and post toothless mexican man again.

Maybe you need a break from shmups. I took a couple years off because they lost their excitement. One issue I Still have is most don't do offense right and reduce to dodge em ups, where your main focus is dodging, and holding autofire at the bottom of the screen takes care of most threats. And that doesn't feel satisfying or exciting.
Ketsui is an exception. Ketsui scoring forces distance management so much it rewards offensive play.

not my guide but this anon got it. Essentially write it with note pad and save it as a .lay file in a folder by the same name as the game rom in your art folder.

here is a generic example:

<!-- name_of_ROM.lay (can leave this alone, it just a note feld)-->

<mamelayout version="2">

////Elements are your images/////////
///You can have multiple elements but in this simple example we are just using the art///
///art needs to be a png to save transparency///

<element name="Artwork_1">
<image file="art1.png" />
</element>

///View is for mame////
////screen is to tell Mame the field for the game, in this case its a vertical game///
//// in this case "bound x" is 555 pixels to the right you can find this number in software like Photoshop or gimp///

<view name="Normal_1">
<screen index="0">
<bounds x="555" y="0" width="810" height="1080" />
</screen>

///size in this example is 1920x1080 because that is the size of my monitor///

<bezel element="Artwork_1">
<bounds x="0" y="0" width="1920" height="1080" />
</bezel>

</view>

____________________________________________________

same is true of horizontal but the detentions for the screen bound are typically <bounds x="240" y="0" width="1440" height="1080" />
>>
>>7605187
I got a bunch of these from progettosnaps.net, but decided that I hate the feathered corners. They look really neat otherwise.

>save it as a .lay file in a folder by the same name as the game rom in your art folder.
Wait hold on let me clarify. It will be named default.lay. But the FOLDER is named the same as the rom.

Having additional elements can help you easily create additional Views. So you can have something like:

<view name="Normal_2">
<screen index="0">
<bounds x="593" y="50" width="735" height="980" />
</screen>

<backdrop element="screen_bezel">
<bounds x="555" y="0" width="810" height="1080" />
</backdrop>

<bezel element="Artwork_1">
<bounds x="0" y="0" width="1920" height="1080" />
</bezel>
</view>

But make sure you add the element (in this case screen bezel) before the view in the script. That way when you hit tab and hit the Video options you will see "Normal_1" and "Normal_2" as options for views. These names are arbitrary and you can name them whatever you want as long as there constantly named in the script.
>>
>>7605214
You could delete the feathered corners in Photoshop. Or better yet save teh feathered corners as a separate png and add them as an toggleable option in the default.lay

how would someone suspected of shmup cheating or lying redeem themselves? Seems like once their reputation is tainted they get treated unfairly and ungratefully. I'm not tardo by the way.

tardo doesn't get treated poorly by the westie scene for that. look at sikraiken, people know he cheated and lied, and now they just pretend that never happened. in fact, they don't care about this type of integrity.

This thread is what's wrong with shmups. Video games are all about fun immersion not trial and error masochism to brag about. The character you play as represents you in real life, and most people refer to video game characters in the first person as themselves as theyre playing, i.e. when you play CT you are Crono, so when that in-game avatar wins you win in that world, no need to compare scores or show replays, we play for the fun immersion of a game. You all play for external reasons, what does that say about you?

I dont think it goes on sale often and when it does the discount is negligible. You're probably not going to get it for much cheaper than it is normally. You could also be a dick and pirate it

>>7612583
Yeah I mean, I don't know why you would try to phrase that in a negative tone. Its an homage to those other games, down to the enemies and bosses you fight, and there's even a weird dream segment that's super similar to the first level of a certain game, including make your fighter behave totally differently to match.

Don't expect Mark to do this, he seeks the pig audience (because it's potentially more people) so he has to compromise. Issue is, Junkie is better at attracting them directly, as Mark is also trying to attract the players a bit, but the middleground isn't working too well; noone is pleased.

Mark is only an emerging e-celeb because he gave a shit about actually playing shmups competitively. I hope he doesn't cuck trying to chase them views. I understand everyone dreams of making it as an e-celeb but he is better off keeping the community small and attracting whomever he can with more hardcore shmup content.

I don't get this desire by the community to grow it into some massive fandom. What's the point if you have to water everything down? There isn't anything wrong with being a niche community. Fact is, real shmup play isn't going to attract big numbers. It's a very autistic like hobby that will only appeal to certain people. Feeding the sick grabbers in some wierd hope that we will get more games only gets you shit like the Psykio Collection.

If you want to make it as a streamer or YouTube personality, this isn't the hobby for it.

>I don't get this desire by the community to grow it into some massive fandom. What's the point?
When people like Mark start making fwiends with Shmup developers they realize that the market is too small to be really successful. So growing the community is essentially marketing. Moreover if you want to preserve something, just as when you need to repaint a fence to save it from rot. At its current state its unsustainable in the long term unless you attract new players. "Growing" the fan-base might not be the only solution but its the easiest one compared to the less predictable model of trying to attract a small niche of core players who are willing to pay a premium.
>>
>>7615840
But people hate these games, exposure doesn't work
>>
>>7615840
This is framed from a monetary standpoint. I understand why developers and ecelebs would look at it this way but I don't understand why an average member of the community would. If you enjoy something, it serves no purpose to change it into something else just to try to ensure you can keep enjoying it. What you enjoyed is not there anymore.

If you want to preserve a building, you need resources to invest in restoration. Even if you cut the developers out of the equation you still need a way to continue to invest in what you want to preserve. Likewise you will eventually need new blood to continue the legacy of preserving that thing. That is unless your just some nihilist who doesn't care about what happens to shmups after your dead.

>1500 year old game
Chess is not going to change, its anti-fragile. Shmups on the other hand are practically dead already.

It's better to accept it's becoming an irrelevant genre that few care about and just enjoy what's left of it, focusing on the good people and not endlessly chase Zelda fags only to accomplish nothing (it's never worked) but wasting time.
>>
>>7615945
So let it die. That's fine I guess, nothing last forever. But its not a zero sum game. The genre was huge in the 90's, their is no real valid reason why it shouldn't still be more popular today. That doesn't mean you have to devalue the base in order to chase vapid Zoom Zooms. But their need to be something done if you want to bring in young blood enthusiast.

Your analogy isn't quite right. If I wish to preserve a historic landmark, I don't accomplish that by rebuilding it as something else. I invest whatever resources I have into preserving it, not changing it. The agenda is what is important. Do I want to preserve this so it can live on in whatever manner it can or do I want to profit from it? The hobby is being changed by those who wish to profit from it.

>>7616020
I'm not saying change it. I am saying that something must be done. But even if you rebuild it as it once was, its still "changed" as the old material is replaced with the new. None the less it has a cost. No matter how you solve the problem of entropy it still needs to be solved. If there is no one financing that restoration then it doesn't get done. That takes investment (not just financial, but people actually interested). One way to solve that problem is the thing your protesting. That doesn't make it the ideal solution but its a solution none the less. Moreover it doesn't mean it has to be this slippery slope, all or nothing thing that you make it out to be.

Right, but the issue still remains regarding preservation. It doesn't need to be necessarily defer to by vapid consumers, but the problem needs to be addressed if you don't want the genre to die. >>
>>7616229
I don't care about that shit, why can't you just enjoy the games?
>>
>>7616214
It doesn't necessarily solve for X. It is more likely to accelerate the decline by discouraging and running off the small number of players who genuinely enjoyed the genre, because of what the genre is, by changing it to something that no longer interests them. The new consumers are more fickle, people attracted to new shiny things, and would likely leave again as something new comes along leaving you with less than had you not tried to appease them.

I think the premise you are using, that the genre will die if we don't do something, may not be necessarily true.

I don't think the genre will ever be what it was in terms of popularity. I don't know what the answer is. I just don't see this idea of catering to consumers ending well.
>>
>>7616320
Holly shit dude, way to miss the point. If you want to preserve something on into the future then you need resources dude to entropy, simple as. Resource are not merely financial, they can also be human capital, people passionate about its preservation. People grow old and die, so you need a new generation to carry on the legacy. Is not an ether or, its merely one potential way. Pic related is (You), likely saw the "Degredation of a fanbase.png" image macro and shut your brain off.

>I think the premise you are using, that the genre will die if we don't do something, may not be necessarily true.
the second law of thermodynamics bro.

>I just don't see this idea of catering to consumers ending well
First, I don't think anyone is positing a solution remotely close to the hyperbolic straw-man you make it out to be. Second, I am not saying its a great solution. But due to the nature of entropy there need to be a solution if preservation is your goal. I would be perfectly happy with you admitting you want the genre to die. After all such is life, all things come to an end.
>>
>>7616368
When 99% of people talk about preservation, what they really mean is they want it to be easily accessible while they're still alive. They could not give a fuck about what happens after they're dead.

Sorry, I'm having trouble engaging with your personality.

The only point I was trying to make was that you can get new players without changing the genre. The idea I dont agrea with is that shmups MUST NEEDS to become speed running or fighting game levels of popularity to survive. Your entropy shit is just word salad.

I'm not against any change. But if the genre changes, it needs to be driven by actual players and not by grabbers and e-celeb profiteers.

Just take care of yourself and don't worry about what other people do. After all your just a tactical nihilist, otherwise why would you care about what other people do? It seems to me you on some level do care about preservation as far as it comes to what makes (You) comfy. So being that you do want to preserve something, then how do you plan on doing that? >shmups MUST NEEDS to become speed running or fighting game levels of popularity to survive.
Don't you think your being hyperbolic when you suggest that is what people are advocating? That isn't even what I'm arguing here.

>I'm not against any change. But if the genre changes, it needs to be driven by actual players and not by grabbers and e-celeb profiteers.
I agree, but that said, if you want it to be antifragile there needs to be a solution to entropy. This is true of all things.

Depends on the game, really. DDP, for example, has strict routing, so I usually watch replays so as to not drop my chain. Something like Touhou, on the other hand, I never need to watch an entire replay--the only time I'll watch something is if I'm stuck on a spellcard and need help with it.

Pretty much. Break down each stage into sections you can memorize and watch a replay at 1.5x speed several times, until you can close your eyes and see the enemy spawns and route. Then sit down and try to replicate it.

Devs cry about people not buying there games but then they go and release to only one console and may even region lock them. Region locking should have died a decade ago. In all fairness this seems to be getting better though.

I'm playing deathsmiles and my xbox360 emulator is xenia, but I always get framedrops down to 30fps when there's a lot on the screen. Is there a better emulator or is it something else that's causing it?

Dang, even Jaimers gets visibly frustrated when he loses an extend.

That's just the current state of 360 emulation. I'd play the arcade version on MAME

most players that beat Strikers games don't stick with the series. they add it to their 1cc trophies and move on, which shows they don't like the games just want the bragging rights!

ric planning to 2-ALL Gradius 3 SNES? I didn't know znes could make input files...
>>
>want to criticize a shmup
>realize the same criticism applies to almost all shmups

What was the game and what was the criticism? Maybe it applies more to that shmup than others even if it applies to all to some extent.

You only dodge bullets and that's it, they're all the same, just with different graphics.
>>
>>7624591
yeah they're not for everyone, if you dont like dodging dots then they'll all seem the same no matter what little gimmicks and score tricks they use
>>
>>7624513
>znes could make input files
yes, if you record your run using in Znes and use save states it doesn't record the inputs prior to loading a save state so you can use it to tool assist. I don't know if there is a way to export the input files of the top of my head, but when you playback the recording in cuts out all the times you loaded a save and then that file can be exported to MP3 iirc. But its been a long time sense I've messed with it so some of the details might be wrong.

yep, I learned about it when doing a 8/v/ plays Super GnG thread several years ago. Everyone took turns playing one life and would upload a VOD for each segment and then sharing our savestate that we would make between deaths. On anon insisted on running using Znes and totally cheesed the game.

Why is everyone concerned about cheaters?

If there is no video of you playing that shows your input and the screen in the same shot, it didn't happen.

Noone will care anyway, whether it's legit or cheated. At best you'll get some empty praise by people that didn't check the replay

>>
>>7625165
Even saying "no one will care" shows you don't get it. You're downplaying cheaters and demoralizing players from making replays by framing the issue around popularity. It's not about popularity or getting praise, we do it just to do it and show we did it.

>it's true
It's false that no one cares. It's false that no one will watch replays. It's also irrelevant how many viewers you get. Just do it.
>>
>>7625227
Just play for yourself, no need to record shit. Other players may pretend to watch but nope.

Actually kind of based. This game does seem to have a nice aesthetic to it.
