Why is Mario64 considered so revolutionary again?
>>

mario 64 is a good game

I prefer quake 2, but quake 1 is better than mario 64

It's not about which game is better, it's about Mario64 being a supposedly revolutionary 3D game.

Mario 64 is the first good 3d platformer while Quake is Doom in 3D.

Doom already did the whole schtick Quake 1 did but with polygons, Quake 2 was a weaker sequel derided by fans for being too cringe and sci-fi, and Quake 3 was a multiplayer thing later on. The only thing Quake series did to have lasting impact was the arena FPS which that in and of itself became obscure tryhard boomer shit that died off years ago due to elitism and posers.

So yeah damn without even mentioning Mario 64 being the first true good 3D game Quake was a nothingburger. Good bait thread though, I'll give this (You) as a prize.

One was "revolutionary" to technology in a sense that was inevitable no matter what (pioneer is a more accurate term for this) but still played like a relatively popular and fleshed out genre.

The other actually revolutionized gameplay concepts that all 3D platformers took inspiration from, from then on. It caused actual change of how games are played, it didn't just sell 3D video cards.

Unpopular opinion: SM64 and OOT are overrated games and are outshined by newer games in their series.

SM64 in particular is boring as shit compared to one of the best games of all time, SMB3. Even SMW is more fun. SM64 had a serious lack of levels, boring collectathon gameplay, bad camera, soulless art style and bad graphics, decent music at best, etc. Most Nintendo fans I've encountered on /v/ over the years being rabid N64/GC fanboys are dumb zoomers blinded with nostalgia and bad taste.
>>
>>7440741
Most of us don't hate ourselves or want to kill people

>>
>>7440741
I hate Mario 64 but when Quake came out it didn't even have 3d graphical acceleration Mario did and Quake didn't even have viewable weapon support. Mario was a much more polished game.
>>
>>7442747
You're a fucking retard if you can't see the differences yourself
>>
>>7442769
I'd go as far as saying Mario 64 is the second-worst 3d Mario, with only Sunshine behind it. Galaxy and 3D World have far more interesting gameplay, and Odyssey at least improves the collectathon a bit.
>>
>>7440770
>the first good 3D shooter?
You means Duke Nukem 3D?
People tend to forget that Duke Nukem 3D came out 5 month before Quake and had a way better "3D level design" than Quake.
The only thing that was revolutionary about Quake was the id Tech 2 not the game.
>>
>>7440741
Good graphics at launch, amazing controls, fun to play. Just like Quake.

>>7440759
Show a 3D platformer that predates Super Mario 64, which looks good, has good controls, is fun to play, and was on a home console.

>>7440761
>while Quake is Doom in 3D.
Kind of, though it being in full 3D with arbitrary world geometry and without any of Doom's simpler restrictions in physics and graphics, is still a pretty monumental step.

In the same way, Super Mario 64 is really just a Super Mario game but in 3D, the two aren't the same kinds of leaps, but neither is insubstantial.

>>

pretty sure it started already with quake 1
>>
>>7441117
Actually, it was a Quake 1 mod.

>>
>>7445994

>>
>>7440741
Because no one fucking plays 3D FPSes anymore, everyone plays the latest bing bing wahoo 3D platformer of which Mario 64 was THE FIRST game to do. Also no one liked 3D games for the 1.5 years PlayStation and Sega Saturn existed before Mario 64 got released by our lord and saviour Miyamoto-san.

If I had it my way, we'd have to mention Mario 64 when discussing ANY GAME just to pay it the due respect and tribute for being literally the most perfect artefact of gaming that no other game compares to.

Unironically, if the choice was between having sex with all my previous crushes, or playing Mario 64, then the only thing I'm slamming is a cartridge into a N64.
>>
>>7440741
because quake is FPS, aka EASY MODE for 3D games.
>>
>>7440752
FPS is easy mode, the amount of work Nintendo had to do to get the animations and enemy behaviors etc to work smoothly is what's impressive.
>>
>>7446035
We're not.
We're just pointing out how retarded console kiddies are.
Console gamers are constantly praising games that are mediocre at best.
>>
>>7446101
Uh huh sure you're not kiddo.

>>
>>7446116
It's clearly not a serious post anon
>>
>>7446035
I (OP) was mostly a console gamer growing up, and just recently realized Mario64 and Quake came out so close together, which is surprising given how supposedly revolutionary Mario64 is claimed to have been by many Nintendo fanbois.
Goldeneye's supposed revolutionaryness is even more bizarre.
>>
>>7446176
It's only bizarre because in the 90s very few people could afford to own both a gaming PC and a console.
So your typical console kiddie had no idea just how inferior their gaming experience was, which led them to making proclamations that seemed reasonable to most people, but were in fact painfully retarded.
>>
>>7441135
1996 = millennial
>>
>>7442298
What "revolutionary gameplay concepts" would never have existed without SM64?
>>
>>7442298
if mario 64 was so revolutionary, how come the collectathon died out whilst fps is still one of the most popular genres to this day?
>>
>>7446009
Correct. Even single player Q1 is just a locally hosted 1-person multiplayer server. That player hosted client-server system and supporting TCP/IP out of the box instead of fucking with garbage like DWANGO basically changed internet gaming forever (or at least it did until everything somehow regressed backwards to company-run limited life servers and forced matchmaking).
>>
>>7446684
Normies.
>>
>>7440741
Mario 64 did more for game design, especially 3D cameras. First person cameras were already fucking solved in the 80s and all the game design for first person games just involved changes to level design really.

Quake is a damn fine game and definitely one of the biggest leaps forward for FPS but Mario 64's influence reaches across into literally hundreds of games across many different genres.
>>
>>7446770
Mario 64's camera was garbage, though. Banjo-Kazooie is the game that perfected third-person controllable cameras.
>>
>>7446770
>Mario 64 did more for game design
What a load of fuck. Nintendo fans are delusional. Crash Bandicoot came out the same fucking year and blew all Mario 64 technicality out of water.
>>
>>7440741

I don't want to shit on M64, but they were far more impressive game that came out that year.

>>

There aren't any 3D Platformers that play like SM64 which is really disappointing since I love it and want more. The camera sucked and wasn't influential in the slightest.

>>
Quake was a primitive, unpolished, rushed mess; but it's the foundation of most 3d fps games even to this day. Everything from Source to Fallout has some of it's design.

Mario 64 was a polished masterpiece, but a product solely of it's time. Within the same generation other games had far surpassed it's engine, mechanics and level design.

I don't think there's a real winner, or loser for that matter
>>
>>7441135

>>
>>7446910
If anything, games like Mario 64 are too 3D. Only the Bowser stages from that game are any good because they play like a traditional Mario game.
>>
>>7440741
literally nothing like it before.

Quake was a PC game...I had seen and played 3d games on PC for a couple years already at that point. Seeing mario 64 running and playing so silky smooth as it did on a console was amazing. I felt the same way about all those PS1 kiosks running Warhawk. that was a really cool time.
>>
>>7440741
Quake was a dime a dozen Doom clone, Mario 64 redefined how 3D games could be played after some extremely awkward movement games like Jumping Flash or tank controls.

Because Quake 1 didn't sold well, and almost killed id.
Duke nukem 3d assraped Quake 1, Which led to Quake 2 who became one of the biggest Hits of the 90's, one of the biggest modded games at the time, and one of the best sold games for PC, and then Q3A came out and people went nuts with bots, though release was ass due to Shitty Netcode who Q2 had it better for a few months.

There are many magazines or old posts at the archives from that time showing how people wasn't keen on Quake 1 outside stuff like Machinima or TF, and how Duke 3d got better.
Even Romero recently and others who worked on it stated how crap it was to the point that there were even tons of copies that weren't sold at places like gamestop and so on, said copies who you still find sealed on ebay and etc.

The only games who beat Quake 2 on the run for a few months before Q3A was out was Battlezone 98 and Unreal 1, which bot got buried when Quake 3 Arena came out for PC and dreamcast, and both had crossplay MP
>>
>>7440741
different genre, did different 'revolutionary' things for each game

Mario 64 pioneered in terms of controls, gameplay, level progression and being actually fun.

Quake 1 only made a decent 3D engine. All other aspects had already been explored and done before.

>>7453821
there are many magazines and websites from that time who says otherwise, Spawn of fagweather.
Duke 3d Humiliated Quake, and no one at id cared about the game outside carmack who made Quakeworld, and then GLquake totest the code for Quake 2's OpenGL.
they turned WoR into Quake 2 and the result sold a LOT and saved id software.

Runs at 60fps as well.

Vid related came out in August 1993 and was the very first game to use texture filtering. 40 cars on track @ 60fps. Forget Quake and Faggio 64, this is BEFORE Doom was released in December 1993. People were playing Wolfenstein 3D on their PC's while Sega were doing this.
>>
because 64 is higher than 3, or super. a lot higher

final fantasy 7 see, it was revolutionary because before that was final fantasy 3. it went from 3 to 7, which is pretty good. but mario went from 3 to 64. that is a MASSIVE jump. that is revolutionary.
>>
>>7453920
Give it a rest. The only thing that people don't sometimes appreciate from that time is how the N64 had 3d games like SM64 and Goldeneye that the PC had nothing like at the time. Nowadays it's always the consoles trailing the PCs, but if a company decides to take a chance on a wild architecture it could happen again they would surpass PC games (though also the upper limit is generally hit now in games, there isn't much you can't do that you would want to)
>>
>>7454548
Quake 2 Console ports are very unique and sold well, N64 has better looking filtered textures for monsters and better shaders, PS1 port had unique monsters and mouse and PSX modem support.

The truth is nobody cares about Mario 64, it really had no lasting impact culturally as a game and was totally overshadowed by Playstation at the time and since then people have long forgotten about the shitty looking 3d Mario game that was kind of awkward to control. That's why they brought back the 2d Mario, people like it more
>>
>>7456114
What level of retardation are you on?
There are thousands of normal-fag memes referencing M64 out of nostalgic memory. The reason they brought back the 2D Marios is because A) it was the only way to get a Mario game onto the DS at that time, B) they decided to make 1 for their main consoles just for some extra money, C) they realized Nintendies will eat the same shit over and over again, and D) they still make 3D Marios which sell much better

quake wasn't revolutionary? the game pioneered esports and was the basis for team fortress because of the fact the engine was focused around player movement in comparison to previous FPS games leading to the foundation of things like goldsource/half-life for it.

So how come you nintendo fans never play anything outside of nintendo but pretend to know anything outside of it?
>>

zoom zoom.
Quake pre-dates Unreal, retard.
And the very first Unreal was actually something of a disappointment.
The franchise didn't hit its stride until Unreal Tournament.
>>
>>7453971
Sega dominating 3d arcade games indirectly helped in killing the genre.
Competitors just bailed out, waiting for consoles to catch up or generally more affordable hardware.
