>>7279263lost health dude
>>7279260Looks like one of Odd Nerdrum's paintings.
>>7279283aint that just how it be sometimes
>classic doom's aesthetic starts off cartoony, then tries to be gritty afterwards>modern doom's aesthetic starts off gritty and heavily detailed first, then adds the goofyness and whackynessi think this could be a way to describe why both feel different
>>7279292That and the gameplay
>>7279292>>7279309I think a big difference is that Modern Doom generally treats Killing Monsters as a primary objective. While not always the case, its very common to find a situation where the only way to proceed further is to kill everything in the arena first.Classic Doom rarely requires the player kill the enemies, and in the few times it does, is usually designed as a boss fight that ends the episode or game. Most arena fights are usually just a reaction for grabbing a key and/or powerful items, and is usually more about fighting for survival until an escape opens up, rather than to have the ability to proceed at all.
>>7279352it's also because despite some enemies seeming simplier or basic, they're like "level pieces" which is why it's easy to make them feel diverse and versatiledespite the more advanced ai, movement and even features, there's cases where new enemies feel too unified or homogenized with how they act youfeels like a matter of doing more with less vs less with more

BTW who removed the RETRO and place the 90's FPS back in the OP? it was the sonic doom anon>>7279172Check the skyrim one, is better to make stuffAlso the 15.ai system is a bit complicated and some VA's can really deliver a good voice even without the text shenanigans like Shandris Feathermoon/Princess Celestia VA and The Administrator
>>7279376>>7279352Cool insight anon.
>>7279396>who removed the RETRO and place the 90's FPS back in the OP? I think I know why.
>>7279384The island from '04 (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/g-i/island). A pretty typical early 2000's ZDoom map. Lots of custom monsters and zdoom features like slopes, custom camera movements for cutscenes, and different objectives like restoring power to generators. The monster placement was thoughtless and made me iddqd less than halfway through the level. I'd probably be impressed if it was still 2004 but this is the kind of map that aged poorly imo. 2/5
>>7279417
i think it's also because one tries to mimick b-movies, while the other tries to mimick cartoonsbut the simplicity of classic designs feels like they could work with both cartoonish and live action contextas if doom designs are just ideas and the "art style" comes after, something newdoom thinks olddoom lackedone problem with the chittin designs is that they look goofy when humans like the uac/arc dudes look realistic or normal, making a contrast between "real people" vs "cartoony demons", when doomguy and the zombiemen originally seamed cartoony but the archvile was a creepy hr giger monster and not a punchable oddworld/dreamworks thingi also assume the overdetailed exoskeletons are meant to make the monsters "abstract" looking but they never reach that level of wayne barlowe/beksinksi monsters, so they're just fantasy/alien creatures that look busy and that's itlike giant insects or sea creatures
>>7279205No mate. Plutonia is terribly overrated.
>>7279384Geronimo.WAD from '94 (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/g-i/geronimo). A fairly long '94 maps with several neat areas. In one part you have to activate a few multi-layer monster closets to proceed and another area resembles The Express Elevator to Hell. Not bad for '94, it gives you lots of weapons and the monster count is fairly high. Shotgunners tend to appear in big crowds which I always like. 2.5/5

Here's a fun trick that maybe someone will find useful. You can have a monster stay in a sorta stasis until the player walks to a certain area. Not hidden behind and an invisible door or whatever. If you place the player in a self referencing sector, monsters won't see or hear them. When they walk out of it the monster can see them... So you could have a monster standing guard over a key or something, and when the player grabs it they become active.
>>7281332>Is it a worthy sequel to the Strogg story of Quake 2?Yes. It's the definition of average shooter gameplay, but if you like the Strogg, if you like a team of marines in way over their heads, if you like good acting, you'll have fun.

>>7281568Same can be said for the pistol vs. the machineguns in Wolfenstein 3D, as well as for Doom.
>>7281503It looks fine in software, IMO.I think one problem of hardware rendering is that lighting modes that try to simulate vanilla's diminishing lighting actually makes dark rooms look even darker in the distance compared to actual software rendering. And then the lighting modes that aren't doing the software style diminishing lighting just look darker overall, unless its the hright setting, which ends up having the opposite problem of making things too bright compared to whats intended.

>>7281278It's kind of a neat game, in some ways, but it's also kind of weak overall. Geomod is a really cool gimmick, but they start restricting it as the game goes because they likely realized that it lets the player break levels a lot.
>>7281608I think Valiant's final boss was better just because it wasn't nearly as tedious. and felt more well designed in a gameplay standpoint. But I do think all megawads that simply end with a small "boss level" are anti-climaticI prefer final maps that play like what usually tend to be the penultimate maps of most megawads. Big adventure maps and Big slaughter maps being the actual final maps just makes for a more satisfying conclusion, IMO.I also like what BTSX and AA do, where the final map is a monsterless endgame "cutscene" more than anything.

>>7281581I prefer more bright and colorful settings, so Valiant wins here, most of Eviternity is too grimy for my liking. However, Valiant lacks visual knockouts like Eviternity map15, 26, 29. Maybe it could've used a couple of guest maps by, like, Xaser and Lupinx-Kassman.In gameplay Valiant wins rather easily, there's no tedious stuff like pistoling zombies for 10 minutes before the map gets going.Boss - Valiant's better, no questions here. >>7283275Yeah but smart phone internet was garbage for a while, so people couldn't pollute the internet with it (at least not as excessively as they do now) for at least a couple of years. In my opinion, things were declining by 2010 and the golden age was over, but even then, it was not as bad as it is now. Mid to late 2011 is about when things really started too look like they do today. Just a few big websites for everything, and increasingly more aggressive censorship on YouTube and the like.

>>7283802Like a lot of franchise revivals, Doom is more about "what people think Doom is" or "what they associate Doom with"From idolizing Doomguy to the focus on movement and speed, which came from people making Doom seem faster than it was as a response to COD and Doom 3

>>7283810Keepers of the hardcore insider community lore like you are hilarious, particularly when you seriously think 4chan is the true heart of it.
>>7283336I get you. In fact I like to think of Quake weapons as if they all come from that lovecraftian dimension, not from humans. How else can you explain freaking combat nailguns other than madness?Speaking of which, the Q2-inspired SSG in this version of mod is kinda eh. The QC one from latest edition looks and fits way better.Still, 1.5 axe doesn't bother me. It's rusty enough. And animations are infinitely better.
>>7283852I still play with run defaulted to off most of the time. My pinky naturally rests on shift, so it's not hard to tap it on and off to get through platforming or whatever.
>>7283912Not really, id isn't selling reprints of the Doom comic or anything else he cites as inspiration in the interviews he did.
>>7283958>NailgunThey exist in real life, just are used for construction. Obviously, if someone wanted to weaponize it they can, but even with those you can mess someone up.
>>7283839Doom's always been pretty fast and it's been core to the gameplay, but that's the case for nearly all these 90's shooters in a similar style. When others are saying classic Doom stands out because of its speed it's like saying it stands out because of its first person perspective.I'm not sure if I'd attribute it to 4chan, but I did find it odd how meme'd his movement speed started becoming. Same with him being murder-crazy, that came across more with ranger in Quake 1.
I can't make a good map
So I have been getting into the Marathon trilogy and I'd like to play the precursor, Pathways into Darkness, but the original version is archaic as fuck.I heard there was a remake of it in Aleph One? How is that? What about the Pathways remake in the Doom 3 engine?https://www.moddb.com/mods/pathways-redux
>>7283983Hence why he said "combat nailgun"
>>7283993Unmodded original doom is slow paced. The only thing that's fast is the caps lock. Even the rockets are slow. He can damn near keep up with them. Playing the original doom was fun because there was nothing else like it out there but ultimately, it's like going to a retirement home while running and gunning down the elderly. Some might be a threat, but they gotta struggle moving around first before they can take aim. Mods is what made this game good. Custom maps before that. I can see why he's seen as murder crazy though because of all the killing, but if there is an army going around genociding everyone, people would genocide them back.
>>7283710>>7283761Quake AND Doom>solid games that are fun to play>look really cool, yet runs on hardware which was modest for its time>easy to make content for (meaning more to speedrun)>times and 'scores' you for each level>comes with built in tools for making recordings, the recordings aren't just lightweight (important for 1990s internet speeds), but displays the recorded gameplay perfectly, and lets you analyze every input, both for learning and for catching cheatersWith other games like Duke Nukem 3D doing the same thing, I think that what we can really say is that first person shooters on PC is what truly got speedrunning into gear. Doom started it out with demo recordings, but other games continued the trend and cemented it.
>>7283983I know, there's just no way military would prefer them over some assault rifle lol
>>7284006It's honestly amazing it even exists in Aleph One at all. The amount of effort to port it over is amazing once you realize how much under the hood was changed to make it work. I haven't played PiD on original mac hardware but I've been told that the Aleph One port is very faithful
>>7283982I mean marketing for the game. Nobody ever wants to admit they took inspiration from something stupid, even if said stupid inspiration has legitimate redeeming qualities. Like they claim the fatalities to restore health system was inspired by Bloodborne. No way in hell was it inspired by Bloodborne, they just said that to make themselves look good through association. The system is exactly like Space Marine and Duke Nukem Forever. But those games aren't critically acclaimed and you don't want any negative associations. When hyping up your game you say something gaming journalists can latch onto and repeat in every article. Every single big game does this. Like after Goldeneye everyone said they were totally inspired by Goldeneye, but on closer examination its bullshit. Dig deep enough into preview articles on websites and magazines and you'll quickly see this kind of deceptive marketing everywhere you go.
>>7284009Fair enough>>7284004Play other maps looking for inspiration or when you have a good idea, keep it until you have a few more and then connect the good ideas with other rooms.

>>7284049Not good enough. Okay, hypothetically if they had a dick for fucking femranger what would it look like.
>>7284023I doubt they took any serious inspiration from that copypasta. I am sure however Hugo and the team are aware of it as they are pretty savvy to all the memes, just as they are aware of Repercussions of Evil. It may have had minor influence but not like something like the comic.
>>7284054it'd go inside itself like a dog when flaccid and when erect it's about an inch in girth and three inches max. Femranger has to always assume the same position because shambler wouldn't be able to penetrate otherwise.
>>7284004Neither could I, but I practiced and took criticism.
>>7284012>original doom is slow pacedRomero has said since interviews before the game even released that one of it's defining characteristics was breakneck speed.
>>7284015I will check it out. This Doom 3 Pathways remake mod also looks pretty interesting.

The system is exactly like Space Marine and Duke Nukem Forever. But those games aren't critically acclaimed and you don't want any negative associations.I can't speak for Space Marine, but Duke Nukem Forever was a gargantuan shitbiscuit of a game with lots of bad design, I doubt they were looking at it for inspiration.

>>7284081I put my dick in your ass, yet you trust me.

>>7284074It's about has slow paced as halo. Moving fast doesn't matter if the monsters have to walk around first before even firing once when you're holding the trigger down with the chaingun running into them lol.

>>7284093I play the game more than he does. Just because someone says something doesn't make it true. Doom is slow paced. Just watch a video of someone playing it unmodded without fast monsters on and watch how they manage to kill like 5 or 6 zombies before one of them even takes a shot.People rip on the other guy a lot but I bet the other guy contributed to doom far more than that kike. Fast monsters makes doom fast paced, but the game is still easy even with fast monsters on. Only difference is that you actually have a chance of dying to cheap traps with fast monsters on.
>>7284127>Doom is slow paced. >>7284253It worked in XIII, this looks off to me because only the characters have it
>>7284195IRL, flechettes really depend on how you use them. They can work as part of the payload of an explosive, but fired from a gunbarrel they're extremely finicky and unreliable; highly susceptible to wind and weather, easily destabilizing from even the mildest gust, and deflecting very easily from rain or even the lightest vegetation (which doesn't just mean poor accuracy, but often poor terminal ballistics).Project Salvo/SPIW delved a lot into that kind of research and it was found it just wasn't worth it, due to the fundamental problems of super light dart projectiles vs. air resistance, as well as the high velocity of the projectiles making the guns loud enough that it was a really serious problem.Quake isn't exactly a game about realism, but the nails used are visibly pretty big, so perhaps part of their solution could be imagined as using heavier projectiles much less easily affected by the elements. I imagine this would mean a lot of recoil and noise, but at the same time I guess the higher performance would be important for big and bad monsters like Shamblers.

>>7284204They would need to be properly aerodynamic, and have some sort of stabilization, be it through fins or by having a gyroscopic spin like rifled bores do with conventional bullets, perhaps using sabots through a rifled bore in that case.Speed is also important, some nailguns use actual .22 caliber rimfire blanks to drive the nails (which can be really useful if you want to nail tougher materials), but these don't give you all that much velocity all things considered, you'd probably want something that has a powder charge closer to 5.56mm NATO.

>>7284458Nice, surprisingly informative I had no Idea imps in Eternal were 6'3+. That's actually fucked. When I watched the original video I was a bit thrown off when the dude said something about "mindless zombies" which made me think 1) weren't they "possesed" and not just undead? 2) Zsec (which I guess Is no longer canon so whatever) All that being said even in Hideous Destructor the D1/2 are actually quite manageable for a game/mod sort of marketed as "virtually impossible" or whatever. I would actually argue the Eternal demons are MORE powerful (aside from Arch-viles). That's very much offset by Doomguy having a super suit. So IDK its a weird balanceBelieving a single nations army could defeat this type of horde when they can't even defeat a militia driving Toyotas is ridiculous

Thoughts on Duke Nukem Zero Hour? Why did the N64 get such based entries in many FPS series? If only it had gotten Powerslave.

>>7284531BTW foursite became more interesting with this mod because xenomorph warriors are AVP levels of rabid and even faster than the original gamealso the game's textures REALLY fits well with this, and i would even like to see this shit on Q1 or even Q2, and marines and synthetics eats you alive with bullets if you are playing as the marine class.>>7284609>>7284612then why are you 2 faggots scared, and always trying to slide this little information every time when someone pops it up?
>>7284630He's got balls of steel.Steel.
Just putting this out here because I encountered it in Strain: If you are thinking about making your Doom map focused heavily on puzzles, do yourself and everyone else a favor and blow your brains out. That faggot shit has no fucking business whatsoever in fucking Doom.
>>7284627Best N64 game i played when i was a kid. It was my first Duke game too.

>>7284641Your schizophrenia is amusing is all. Carry on.
>>7284660My first one was the original Duke 3D but it was the first one I played on a console. Wasn't there another original Duke title on N64 that was first person as well?
>>7284672Nope. Just a port of 3D.
>>7284673Seethe faggot. If I had been doing whatever gay shit your dream up on a daily basis they would've already banned me.
>>7284678I guess I must be thinking it was different because it has new weapons and some different levels right?
>>7284680You've been banned. You just evade. You clearly need a solid ass beating to correct the faggot shit your failure of a father should've corrected in you.
>>7284682Imagine being this mad someone says Half-Life is shit.
>>7284627Because Douk works better as a platformer Action game than FPS mostly.Duke3d is great but the platformers are soulful, mainly The Manhathan one.
>>7284681I think so. I remember watching a video mentioning that some of the levels for N64 Duke3D are different.

You know, we could potentially increase the counter to over 9000 if we tried since threads slide so slowly on this board.
