Joe Siegler also believes ROTT was the first game with Non-Linear Level Progression: "It's nowhere near as pronounced as it was in Hexen, but in Extreme ROTT (not the original ROTT), if you got to the first level of Episode 2 (called High Road Low Road), you were presented with a choice. There were two exits on this level. One took you to Episode 2 Level 2, and the other took you to like Episode 2 Level 5. Because of the way the game was constructed, the boss level had to be a specific number (I think Level 9 on Episode 2). The bosses had special game coding such that you had to use them on the level number they were originally designed for, or the game would crash - hence the problem (crashing) in my original "Vomitorium" level. Anyway, Tom took the player through a different way to get to the end of Episode 2 there. Depending on which exit you took in E2L1, you'd get a different set of levels taking you to Episode 2 boss level. Again, it's nowhere near as pronounced as it was in Hexen, but if my memory serves, Rise of the Triad was the first game such as this not to progress in Level 1,2,3,4,5 order 100% of the time."
>>
>>7103790
Oh, RoTT had just so many bells and whistles, oh my! It's a shame its gameplay sucked, though.

>>7103790
ROTT's engine also had some primitive 3D features like being able to jump on top of objects and enemies (with Doom, you couldn't do that). If you jumped on top of an enemy (except for bosses), they'd die if you stood on 'em for more than one second. This went for other players too so you could crush them in Deathmatches. There were a few particular places (Like "The Corpseyard") where this was easy to do. The game had a "Oh yeah, you've been crushed" text remark that came up when someone did this to you.

Another strange thing that came with ROTT was an infinite random level generator (RANDROTT). That's right… computer made levels. Actually, there wasn't an infinite amount…there was "only" 2,147,483,648 (2 billion, 146 million, 483 thousand, 648) random level sequences. I thought this was the only game to ever have this, but Joe Siegler pointed out that FormGen's two add on level packs for Wolf3D: Spear of Destiny (Just think of it as Ultimate Wolfenstein) included a random level generator with the CD version. That was the first known random level generator (for 3D action games) that I know of. Apogee also sold an addon for Wolf3D called "Wolf 3D Super Upgrades", which had a random level generator for Wolf3D, but that came out after ROTT.

The add-on pack, Extreme ROTT added other things like like moving walkways to ride on, Ballistitowers (fires dozens of missiles at you at once) Oscurovators (teleporters), Climbing GADs, Impossiboulders, FireRisers and tons of other stuff with weird names.

>>
>>7104094
Buzzwords are stupid. But I agree people shouldn't be on their nuts for shit they said in a private discord. But to put something in a game they're selling for money that someone can find and possibly piss people off is foolish. At the very least put that shit in the source code or somewhere that requires deeper digging, or just scrub it out before putting into the public's hands.
You sell something, you should bring some professionalism to the table.

I recently played through plutonia uv saveless and I must say that map 12 was probably one of the most frustrating for me. 14 is also a real problem if you can't find the secrets, and Map 25 was probably the only one that killed me more. Interestingly, the "hard" levels like go 2 it were comparatively pretty easy just cause they give you so much good ammo.

I disagree with melee being interesting, seeing as it's just faster melee strikes that do more damage that goes into a takedown animation after landing a killing blow. The kick knocking enemies flat on their ass is good though.
I'll also agree with the the starting weapon being better. But there's still a lot of bloat and excess in Brutal Doom nowadays.

What do I adjust to make gameplay not suck? They should've put a big "Buy a Doom :^)" message displayed over a screen at all times.

RoTT came out like 2 months after Doom2 and a few days before Heretic. Even if RoTT wasn't a buggy dated mess, they picked an awful time to release it. RoTT sold about 100k copies compared to Heretic's 1mil and Doom2's shit-zillion.

How are you so fucking retarded that someone posting facts about an FPS from 1994 would ruin it for you. Oh.. did I mention ROTT was violent as hell? It was the first game to get an RSAC rating of 4 (That's as high as you can go) with wanton and gratuitous violence…and yes, this was a selling point. Once you blew up somebody, their head might hurtle towards you, their eyeballs might fall in front of your face, their blood might linger in the air or stick on the walls for a few minutes. If that's not enough, there was even an EKG (Engine Killing Gibs) mode (accessible via a cheat code) that caused violence of just about ri-goddamn-diculus levels.

What would be the most satisfying playthrough order for all of these?

DOOM E1-E3
DOOM E4
DOOM 2
Master Levels
TNT
Plutonia
No Rest for the Living
Romero's E1M4B and E1M8B
SIGIL
DOOM 64

Also, is there a reason to choose DOOM64 Steam over DOOM64EX? Looking at PCGW, Steam release has some problems which were never fixed officially, and is also censored.

Its not wiki articles friend, those are quotes mostly from Joe Siegler's blog and the famous ROTT in HELL article. They're interesting facts you WON'T find in a wiki article outside maybe a single sentence. It was a truly unique and fascinating game and I will continue to share these cool facts about Rise of the Triad. They are on topic and if you are truly bothered by it then hide the posts. As for the images, there is no need to rip my own sprites or scan my own art in if someone else already has.

When reminiscing about the development of RoTT when it's source code was released:
>"ROTT, for all its tortured technology, all its semi-justified graphics, did have some stuff that there was to be proud of. It was the first game with Rocket Jumping, the first game with Jumppads, the first game with parental password and Violence level adjustment, the first game with Capture the Flag..."

I found out that Bungie was once developing a 3D Marathon game, Marathon 3, that was supposed to be the actual sequel to Marathon 2 while Infinity would remain as a spin-off. It was cancelled for these reasons:
1. Bungie felt that Infinity was actually a good conclusion to Marathon and they weren't really that motivated into making another game.
2. It was being developed at the same time as Quake and when they saw Quake, they decided that they didn't really want to compete with it and scrapped it.
The only surviving asset from Marathon 3 is this 3D render of Durandal.

Here's more stuff about Marathon 3:

>Bart: So, where did the idea of Myth come from?
>Jason Jones: Well, it's really not all that glamorous. I could probably lie and make up something cool, but I'll tell you the truth instead. We started out doing the natural extension of Marathon, which would have turned out to be something along the lines of Quake. At that time, the first screenshots of Quake were already out, and we sort of knew where they were going, and everybody else did too. We were going to try and do one of those sorts of games, and after about two months of working on it, nobody was really into it at all, and I just had the feeling like we weren't going to be able to pull it off in time. The whole time we were working on the Quake-like game, we had been talking about this other game that nobody thought would work out, and we'd been calling it "The Giant Bloody War Game." We'd sit around talking about the Quake-like game, trying to be serious and make some serious decisions about it, and everyone just kept talking about "The Giant Bloody War Game," laughing, having fun, etc. After about two months of that going on, I just showed up at the office one day with the map editor in its most basic form, It could just adjust the heights and stuff and import the color map, and in one day we switched our project from a shooter game that would have had us chasing our competition's tail to what has basically become Myth."

In many ways ROTT was a game Doomed to failure Just take a look at this mini-timeline:

May 5, 1992 - Wolfenstein 3-D, is released by Apogee.
December 10, 1993 - id unveils Doom. Millions Spooge.
October 10, 1994 "Doomsday" - Doom II: Hell on Earth released (Retail only). Ended up to be the best selling computer game of all time with over 1.6 million copies sold.
December 21,1994 - ROTT 1.0 released.
December 23, 1994 - id released Heretic, developed by Raven Software.

This gives you a general idea of what was going on at the time. No matter HOW good ROTT was, it was going to be lost in a shuffle. It would have to go head on with Doom. Unfortunately (for ROTT), Doom II was an unstoppable force, with thousands of drooling fanatics waiting for hours in line to get it, take it home, and frag till their eyes bled.

>This was supported by a post by Matt Soell (Bungie Software) on the Marathon Central Discussion Forums (now long gone) around the same time. Matt wrote:

>There was, at one time, a Marathon 3 project. It was intended to be a complete rewrite of the Marathon engine with all the goodies people have come to expect (fully 3D, snazzy special effects, much nicer networking, etc.). It was canned because none of our principal development team were very interested in finishing it - or at least, they were more interested in doing something new. Hence, Myth: The Fallen Lords.

Essentially Marathon 3 was reconverted into Myth. Pretty interesting stuff.

Bungie was pretty smart about it. Projects such as the one they were describing with Marathon 3 usually are doomed to failure since they're done solely for the sake of competition and Myth was absolutely great too. It's a shame that the whole Myth II launch fiasco made Bungie be bought out by Microsoft, ONI would've ended up being a more finished product if that shitstorm didn't happen and Halo would've most likely end up being a PC FPS instead of a console one.

That's Myth II. Apparently some retard accidentally released early copies with PC breaking bugs instead of the fully functional final version. Someone said 90%, but another dev said it was closer to 70 iirc. Still a lot of work to be done, but 70% of a game of a game is something you could probably outsource to an interested indie "boomer shooter" dev. But I get the impression that Randy is too proud of having worked on duke to hand it off, and too busy with lucrative IPs to put a small dedicated team on it.
So on the back burner it stays.

Extreme Rise of the Triad is DEFINITELY not for everyone and there are some stage ou literally cannot beat with the male characters because they're too slow. There were some secrets in the original that were like that but this is to just get through the stage. One in particular puzzle (pushing pillars into a row and running across the top of them) can ONLY be done by Thi Barrett for some reason even though Lorelei is faster. Also the platforming gets insane in a game without a jump button, clearing huge gaps from GAD to GAD 10 stories up.

I think it's very fun, but I also think he isn't really talking about the gameplay much, and he isn't very good at showing it off by just posting old .gifs and screenshots. If he was serious about showing it off, he should be recording fun .webms of the game (such as fighting Spray, biting and barking people to death in Dog Mode, showing off the Engine Killing Gibs, or using the Excalibat to kill enemies in melee).
I figure that he's probably waiting for the new port (like me), due to all the old ports being absolutely dildos, but that also means he's running his mouth a bunch not having a lot of visual to show for it, and I'm pretty sure that I'm the one guy around here frequently who's actually interested in talking about ROTT, which I'm really just too tired to be doing recently, so it ends up one-sided.

I figure what he should do is to dial it down a bunch for a while, until the port actually comes out, and he should try to sell the game with good footage.

Seethe.

ROTT was the last game to use the TED editor, written by John Romero. This also was the editor that would have been used in Quake: The Fight for Justice among other things.
>When I came over to Apogee to head up in-house development, we used TED for Rise of the Triad, which started life as Wolfenstein, Part Two. So far, that makes 34 projects using TED. Plus we had planned to do an overhead game called Fight for Justice after the first Keen, based on the same world that Quake is. And an aborted overhead shooter called Complete Planetary Domination. And a Apple II game Carmack and I never finished, called Penultima III. And there was an aborted project at Apogee called Wards of Wandaal. So that makes 38 projects that TED maps were edited for. Wow."

Rise of the Triad: Dark War is a first-person shooter video game, developed and published by Apogee Software (now 3D Realms) in 1995. The player can choose one of five different characters to play as, each bearing unique attributes such as height, speed, and endurance. Its remake was designed by Interceptor Entertainment and released by Apogee Games in 2013. There is also shareware version called Rise of the Triad: The HUNT Begins. The video game began as a follow-up game to the original Wolfenstein 3D, but was soon altered and became a stand alone game. It includes both single-player and multi-player functions, allowing individuals to connect with other gamers and tackle missions as a team. Its main objective is to proceed through levels of increasing difficulty in order to win. Since its original release in 1995, its popularity has allowed for both sequels, such as Rise of the Triad: The HUNT Begins, and remakes, such as the 2013 edition of Rise of the Triad.

It's hard to remember all the level names.

Doom: Spawning Vats is very labyrinthine which I enjoy and has solid texturing. Pandemonium is another very well-designed labyrinth. Hell Beneath is a good shock to the system in terms of difficulty, but short enough that it doesnt get tiring.
Doom 2: The Focus. Just a very solid level in a game full of gimmicky and ugly maps.
Duke 3D: Hollywood Holocaust. Its an obvious choice but its so action-packed and interconnected that it perfectly encapsulates everything good about the game. Hotel Hell is a similarly great level. Flood Zone gets props for the creative theme with the flooded areas.
Blood: Overlooked Hotel. Very labyrinthine map with good atmosphere. Dark Carnival, because the theme is fun and it's where the game's action really picks up. The Siege is cool too with the bombardment.
Shadow Warrior: Again the first level is a great introduction to the game and has a lot of cool optional paths and secrets. Floating Fortress is awesome with the huge boat and all. Dark Woods Of The Serpent has some annoying moments but I have to appreciate how big it is and how it feels like an adventure.

Rise of the Triad began its life as a follow-up to Wolfenstein 3D (though it reportedly shares some similarities with Hall's "Doom Bible", which laid out Hall's conception of the video game Doom and even shares the name of one of the protagonists). The working titles of the game were Wolfenstein II and Wolfenstein 3D: Rise of the Triad. It was to use the same game engine code as Wolfenstein 3D, and have new levels, art, and characters. The artwork took around six months to do. As the game was getting into deeper development, project leader Scott Miller was contacted by John Romero, informing Miller that the project had been cancelled. Miller suspected that this was because id Software did not want to draw the spotlight away from their upcoming game, Doom. In order to keep as many of the numerous game assets the team had already created from going to waste, Tom Hall came up with a new storyline which still incorporated the Nazi themes seen in the Wolfenstein series.

Fun. The ROTTposter is right there is nothing else like it in the genre really except maybe the 2013 remake which despite what you may have heard other say.

The shareware is its own episode not in the full release. If you play it make sure to play the Lasersoft Deluxe Edition, it has 3 extra levels. Only play EROTT if you're crazy about the game.

I really do like it and wish other anons would talk ROTT sometimes. Like whats your favorite weapon? Favorite episode/boss? The Lightning Guards being able to steal your weapons is a real pain in the ass and the Strike Force guys that roll dodge your shots and missiles is impressive for the time. Fuck Monks they're bullet sponges.

DOSBox has the issue of mouse movement not being able to be disabled, you can use novert.com to fix that. WinROTT is ok but has alot of bugs. I'd wait for the rerelease which is supposed to have all the Deluxe levels and EROTT included.

Catacomb Abyss is better than Wolfenstein 3D but it's not better than Doom or Duke. Duke is much, much, much better than Doom, pretty undebateable. In fact Doom is probably the worst Doom engine game. Heretic and Hexen and Strife were much more advanced. Granted Shadow Warrior and Blood were more advanced than Duke but they weren't better games.

Anyway, Rise of the Triad > Catacomb Abyss > Doom

But you guys wanna talk some actual obscure FPS? How about Rebel Moon Rising? CyClones? CyClones with the meme mouse control... Rebel Moon with the meme oxygen meter and insane secrets and friendly AI. Who has played these? What other obscure FPS do you feel like only you played?

I hate to be a gossip, but I was a massive Halo fan once upon a time. When you watch the Halo commentaries, Staten does most of the talking. You can see how that kind of feller would get annoying, but it all comes from the heart. He is just super passionate about those games. It's on record that he was the writer and director for Destiny, but upon pitching his outline to Jones, it was completely rejected and Staten either left or was sacked. I say I admire his stones because it's easy to point at Marty, or Staten as being powerful figures in Halo's development and at Bungie, but he's the guy really holding it together. Maybe Staten's idea of Destiny really was shit, and maybe Marty was really overstepping his bounds. To be the guy to say "enough is enough" takes guts.

There was some kind of set up behind this. Before release there was some drama in the Discord where one person was banned for being a shitter. They then tried to spam negative reviews on Steam and got told off by the devs, who knew it was them.

The multiplayer mode (called COMM-BAT in the game) allows up to eleven players simultaneously. Each can have separate uniform colors, but in team mode, teams are defined by uniform color.

There are nine multiplayer modes. These include a standard deathmatch mode, and the similar "Score More", which assigns different points depending on the weapon and way that a kill was done. Other modes consist of collecting or destroying as many triad symbols as possible. There are a few "tag" multiplayer modes, similar to the children's game, where a player must tag another player or moving symbols. There is also a "Hunter" mode, in which a "prey" player with no weapons has to be hunted by the rest, and a capture the flag mode. Options that can be set for a multiplayer game include player attributes, and whether or not health refills, missile weapons, or traps are spawned.

Shit level design is not just in the flatness, it's in overall structure as well. Also it doesent even stick to one thing, it uses elevators and drops in very few places, but then its all flat again, which makes flatness feel much more jaring and halfassed than it has to be.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing this.
>No, those sprites are not "incredibly detailed", get your eyes checked
Anon they absolutely are. But playing E1M1 just now, I can see your grievances in structure more clearly; there's already infinitely more going on in this single map than the entirety of Project Warlock for sure, but the enemy and weapon variety of PW is enough for me. That railgun, that quad shotty, the auto, mmm.
>>
>>7108707
Not that anon, but the flatness bothers me a lot as well. I grew up with Wolf3D, can even still appreciate its claustrophobic feel now, but it feels different in PW. Instead of utilizing the blockyness properly, it tries to trick you into thinking its more open than it is, which causes a disconnect from the rigidity of the map design. Its hard to explain, but its like its trying to sell different locations entirely on textures rather than geometry and decoration, even when its trying to utilize those two things.

I don't have anything against the game itself, but it feels like it would have been a lot better if there was just a bit more sector manipulation, or if everything just felt less like a bunch of cardboard boxes taped together into a maze half the time.

I dunno, I'm not seeing these criticisms being laid out! The war-torn city maps felt like...war-torn city maps. Hell felt like Hell. It's as if you went in with expectations in one place and haven't reconciled that those expectations weren't met and instead still hold fast to your initial impressions.
>>7108813
I think it looks excellent. Fantastic even.
>>
>>7108835
That sewer webm is a perfect example of somewhere that raising the roof makes zero sense. Ditto for sameness caused by the geometry, a single pip decoration sprite is the only thing that tries to sell it as an actual sewer, aside from the textures and the ankle deep water. You could sell a sewer much better with sector manipulation, a water flat, and stock textures. If you loaded that area with no textures, you could easily assume you were in some kind of flooded warehouse or shipping container or something.

Actually the golden FPS age died after Doom 2... all future pixel shooters like ROTT just added meme shit to try to make themselves stand out from the dreaded doom clone misnomer. Build engine games were always wonky trash that were only praised for their aesthetics and presentation, which in a way makes them the first FPS games to promote the "form over function" style that ruins every modern game. Quake 1 was alright but its sequels are still responsible for cowadoody and spawning the cringeworthy esports scene (Q3A).

I really want to play Death Wish to see all the crazy shit but I'm so bad at the game that I can't even get past the fourth or fifth level in the first episode of vanilla Blood. Feels bad, man.

You are both absolute retarded newfags. Those megas in the OP were put together by anons here and took alot of work to be comprehensive as fuck. You spit in the face of them and the spirit of these generals with such retarded statements. Furthermore every link I have ever seen shared here on request in these threads has been legit, per the spirit of these threads. You wont find that everywhere, but our threads are a relic of a better time, unaffected by the drop in quality of the board at large.

I first played quake by downloading it from a series of rapidshare links on the old rapidshares board. I miss that place.

Yeah that was a based board. If I recall correctly you coulf search files through the site or we may have even had files hosted here that were sesrchable? Maybe through /r/? It wouldve been mid to late 2000s so its hazy

I feel like the board was searchable, or maybe it was slow enough I put in a keyword and Ctrl+F every single page looking for something specific. I remember looking for episodes of a show and accidentally downloading an old one from a week prior so I guess it was
