Was Street Fighter really the best of it's kind? Was it really? It seems like King Of Fighters became better to me.

Good taste, Anon
>>

Both are good.

early sf> early kof

late kof>late sf

SF2:WW absolutely dropped a nuke on any remotely similar game that existed at the time and it took a year or two for anybody else to begin to catch up (same story with Final Fight). As for Super Turbo or 3S vs your favorite SNK or whatever, probably more a matter of taste.

I think Street Fighter II Turbo is basically a perfect kind of fighting game, or timeless. I can always pick it up and play. But for me, I prefer the Fatal Fury series. KOF series was a good spinoff that eventually became more popular than FF, but FF series (including Real Bout series) are top fighting for me.
>>
At the time it was good, but obviously the genre basically became nothing but Primal Rage imitators and wannabes (as it has remained to this day) as soon as Primal Rage came out and established its unbreakable domination of the popular and critical gaming consciousnesses.
>>
>>7099489
Maybe an older poster can answer this: what were Primal Rage-likes called before Primal Rage came out? Or did it take its name from the genre?

3S has a lot less variety in styles of play than most other street fighters. Anti airs being less important, normals that get around plasma not being as important, fireball wars are non existent.
>>
>>7100863
Sounds like it did a great job of differentiating itself from its mighty predecessor rather than just being more of the same.

KoF was arcade only for the longest time because almost no one grew up with a Neo Geo. Street Fighter not so much.
>>
>>7100892
It was unintentional. Like my netflix shows, I prefer a more diverse roster.
>>
>>7101327
Which is why you prefer "fireball wars and/or getting around plasma?"

ST and 3S are different, and I'd agree with many that 3S is overall better. I just think they're both pretty great.
>>
>>7100932
Playstation and Saturn had various KOFs. Though to this day I don't understand why the SNES didn't get any. Don't tell me it couldn't be done, the fucking Game Boy had KOF.
>>
>>7101397
The SNES had Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, and Samurai Shodown. They just weren't very good. KOF had a much bigger roster and that alone was probably a barrier of entry. The GB version had fewer characters, and of course was a massively simplified version. The SNES could easily handle what the GB version was, but nothing trying to be an arcade port without massive sacrifices.
>>
>>7101363
I like having options and it not boiling down to 3 characters all playing pretty much the exact same way.
>>
>>7101363
Oh and I find 3S fun, just wouldn't rate it above 4, ST or CVS2.

I liked the SNK games on SNES back in the day, and it kinda blew my mind to find Ryo in Fatal Fury Special. That's why I would have loved to have a KOF on the system, even if it had to be just one-on-one without team play. They definitely could have done KOF94 or 95 with a few compromises if they wanted to.

It's not the 90's anymore, the internet had guides so use them. If you were to actually try to learn a fighting game with no outside help you would learn shit at a fraction of the pace as other people.
>>
>>7102132

You claimed learning any other way than youtube was a waste of time. Why do you act like you play video games?
>>
>>7103601
India rubber men probably predate movies.
>>
>>7103762
First of all that guy isn't me. Second of all I never said other methods of learning the game are invalid, I would love to see where I supposedly said this, just that guides exist online and should be used. I have learned to play games from playing both online and in person, viewing online guides and wikis, and talking to other players for advice based on our sets. The veterans of old school games would have loved to have the resources we have now, what they spent dozens of hours of figuring out shouldn't go to waste when any player could go look up an explanation for it easily.
>>
>>7103780
Knowing the start up on 3S Kens super didn't interest me, I just knew it was fast. And veterans would withhold tech all the time, they wouldn't share shit if it gave them an advantage.
>>
>>7103851
I don't know what assholes you deal with, or if you're just trying to make a strawman. Literally every guy I have ever played that kicked my ass would offer advice and input if I asked after we played. The "meanest" things I would hear is people telling me "you need to stop doing ____" or "You have to work on ____ if you want to get better" and sometimes kind of stern stuff like that. No one ever told me I was bad, I should quit, or that I'm hopeless. Most of the autists playing this genre are happy to see anyone show interest in their game since then they can be autistic with others, I never see people gatekeep, or at least gatekeep people that actually would play the game.
>>
>>7099318
In fairness, WW was only a hit in the sense it was ''the first of its kind'' but in reality it was with Champion Edition that the game became REALLY GOOD and it really took off.
>>
>>7097681
SF2 was yes. But it's no secret that Capcom can't do anything outside of QCF/DP motions for any of it's fighting games. It got stale. That's why faster versions like Turbo or the Marvel games shine, because it speeds up the simplicity. SF as a whole was basically forgotten about by the mainstream until over a decade later with SFIV, and even that was just a fluke success considering Ono was actively ruining any integrity capcom's fighting games had left.

TLDR Capcom is shit and has continued to be shit since the Clover exodus in 2006. They still haven't recovered.

Generally most people would help out with the basics, but if you discovered escapes to traps, unblockables, stuff not yet known it would be crazy to share knowing it could help in tournaments.
>>
>>7103920
Also, if you scroll up and watch that link I posted of Justin Vs Tokido back in 2003, you can see Justin has ZERO clue about Japans 3S tech.
>>
>>7104014
Okay, and I'm pretty sure Japan didn't know about Valle CCs, your point? No one sat around and decided they would translate obscure tech that probably only had any kind of existence on obscure forum pages in a different language.

I will be fair though and say that the games I play, being rather old, don't have major competitive scenes so veterans often don't feel as pressured to keep tech to themselves and share shit they find. Back then, yeah, people probably kept tech to themselves since more money was on the line at events.

I tend to think more about the Fatal Fury series rather than KoF when thinking about the main rival of SF2.
>>
>>7105535
Same.
I see KOF as a response to the Capcom crossover series (even though KOF started first, so it's more like the other way around), but the rival series of SF is (or used to be) Fatal Fury.
>>
>>7105535
>>7107146
Yeah it was but Kof pretty much took it's place and now FF only lives on through Kof
>>
>>7108056
When you think about it, it's kinda like how MvC took over in popularity in comparison to Street Fighter around the same time, the late 90s and early 00s.
The thing is that Fatal Fury never made a proper comeback like SF did with IV. Don't think any of the original FF devs is still at SNK anyway.
>>
>>7108582
>it's kinda like how MvC took over in popularity in comparison to Street Fighter around the same time, the late 90s and early 00s.
By the later 90's arcades were beginning to fade out and the fighting game craze wasn't what it once was. Capcom had their more traditional style of fighting games like the SFA and SFIII series and their more hectic series like the Marvel titles, with weirder stuff like Darkstalkers and Rival Schools caught in-between. A lot of people didn't really know which style to stick with it and it created a sort of divide. Ultimately the traditional style became more popular in Japan while the hectic style became more popular in the US, allowing both to find an audience.
>>
>>7109850
Well, Fatal Fury also had the Real Bout series which is like FF's response to Alpha, and then there's Garou MOTW, which I don't really consider a FF game, but whatever.
But yeah, both Real Bout and Garou were more popular in Japan, while KOF saw popularity in the west (mainly in latin america).

The whole Fatal Fury, Garou, KOF relationship is really confusing to me.
They all look like the same game with minor differences.

And there's also Art of Fighting. Fatal Fury Special featured possibly the first ever crossover in fighting games, by having Ryo Sakazaki as unlockable/hidden boss.
"The King of Fighters" is the name of the tournament in the Fatal Fury series, so yeah it can be confusing. The main difference is that KOF lacks the multi-plane system from Fatal Fury. It was meant as a spinoff to include even more crossover stuff (Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, etc), although yeah, ignoring the lack of plane-switching, the gameplay and system is pretty similar to FF.
Garou MOTW also feels like a spinoff, or a sort of soft-reboot of the FF/Garou Densetsu series. It's simply called "Garou" (no Densetsu in there), and it also lacks the plane-switching trademark mechanic of FF games.
>>
>>7110307
If I recall correctly it's pretty much like this. Fatal Fury was the main universe (back then anyway), and it was a shared universe with Art Of Fighting, same way you can think of Street Fighter and Final Fight being a shared universe. Garou MOTW you can kind of look at as the Street Fighter 3 to Street Fighter 2, it's supposed to be the "in the future" of Fatal Fury and I'm not sure if it's considered canon or just a "elseworlds" type scenario. Then, you have King Of Fighters, which takes it's name from the tournament that exists within the universe of Fatal Fury, but is it's own universe that revolves solely around that tournament itself and not Terry and co's storyline, which introduces a bunch of original characters not present in any Fatal Fury or Art of Fighting game, as as well as featuring the main characters from those games simply relegated to being part of the larger cast rather than being the central focus, as well as characters from OTHER SNK franchises such as Ikari Warriors and Psycho Soldier, in this way it's both a brand new continuity and also serves as a giant SNK crossover, but canon wise it is it's own universe.

I'd rather listen to Daigo ramble on about DLC costumes than some nobody youtube tutorial guy. But I did bite and checked out about 5 secs into that tutorial guys video, he basically said Anti airs are mind games. Talk about a cope for shitty design.

>Can you even prove you play 3S? Do you have any gameplay of yourself or even a fightcade tag?
I've been playing Street Fighter since World Warrior, unfortunately I don't have footage of that either. All I was saying is the best Street Fighter games have rosters with wildly different styles of play to choose from.

Wasn't there a recent Tekken tournament where 7 out of the top 8 all picked Leroy? I'm not a Tekken guy but according to Zoomers this sets it apart from other Tekkens so it's good.
