Romhacking.net, the main hub of rom hacking on the internet, has also been overrun with the trannt brigade. There was a huge shitstorm recently over a Goemon translation project that contained the word "tranny". It was a translation of a joke line of a female character telling Goemon they were really a "Newhalf" in the original Japanese. This is a slang term for trannys in Japan and while not as recently offensive as tranny has become in the West, is still a slur term. It's used in porn alot too there apparently.

Anyway the translator localized it as tranny. And the community flipped their fucking shit, tied to shame the guy into going away forever, and the patch was censored and the original removed from Romhacking.net

Am I just terrible at this game, or do the weapons in Rekkr feel like complete ass? The bow and chaingun fire easily dodged projectiles, and their ammo drops disappear right about the time I finally get into range. Even weapons that should be fun like the shotgun deal too little damage from mid-range to compensate for the egregious cooldown period. And despite all the flying heads and eyeballs, the rocket launcher just tosses a glowing rock barely six feet in front of you, and even then comes with a cooking period long enough for the mob to leisurely disperse, so crowd control is a no-go. I want to like Rekkr, the map designs are neat looking and the soundtrack is quality, but the actual gameplay is abysmal.

No Archvile fire was bright yellow with light orange outlines, mostly to add depth. Their hands were red, blood red, when they weren't using fire, which was almost never.
The color of his arms aren't the point. I'm saying Eternal's design looks like a generic Activision/Blizzard alien or fantasy monster, with the only thing demonic about it being its red highlights. Archvile actually seemed demonic, hellish. Hell it looked like it was suffering, but was too evil to give a shit.
I guess the old design is just better at capturing the imagination.

Noom's new art direction also feels like they wanted to be a "pop culture reference/tribute heavy" game like Duke Nukem 3D, so a lot of things are meant to be references and winks at something

Specially since both UAC bases and Hell in 1/2 had unique looks that the rest of the series doesn't really carry

If Eternal had a particular weakness besides setting aside combat with platforming in places, it was the referential shit. 2016 seemed like it did it right. Kept it with a simple "Rip and tear, until it is done," and some classic hidden maps that were themselves a callback to Doom 2's hidden Wolfenstein levels. Good uses of references that the game itself didn't necessarily rely on. Eternal tripled down on those references to the point where people were straight up calling him doomguy and the autistic demonkiller himself was literally muttering "rip and tear" at one point. Even if his exhaustion could make that make sense, it didn't work; the delivery was all wrong. It made the whole thing feel like what DNF wanted to do, but the fact is Duke ain't Doom.

Doom's aesthetics are very much like B-movie horror prop and effects making. It's a mix of methods and styles which together makes for distorted, yet cohesive visuals.

For design, it's a mix of heavy metal album cover aesthetics and a very Used Future aesthetic. You're on a futuristic moonbase in the year 2XXX, there's plasma guns and teleporters, but you've still got old hunting shotguns with wood furniture as common weapons (they were like $50 each at Cabela's, they're enough for Phobos security, right?), and the buildings are mildly run down and dilapidated, with old grungy and filthy concrete slab structures, lost of rusty plate metal, and leaky plumbing.

It feels like TNT Evilution plays even heavier at the Used Future thing, and that's one of the things I like about it. It's the future, and you know it's the future because they're still using a lot of these old scummy and gross installations, because it saves money.

Yeah I agree, and honestly I didn't mind Rip and Tear becoming this unironic part of the canon, either. In of itself it's nonspecific enough for someone to not have to know about the comic it came from (as opposed to, say, if someone made a direct reference to The Simpsons or something and the context depended on you knowing of The Simpsons and nothing else), and the vernacular itself does serve as a decent description of Doom's inherently brutal nature as a game. Plus it just sounds savage as fuck.
I think part of it too is that the aspects of classic Doom that Eternal makes references to for what little of a story it has are, for the most part, lacking in any real substance. Not to say the original Doom games needed a story to be good, but for example, when Doom 1 ended with rabbits being killed by demons it was to be a cool juxtaposition to the peaceful and happy image of the end screen before scrolling to the burning city (as well as the beginning part of "Sweet Little Dead Bunny"). It had no real reason other than for the cool factor of it, and Episode 4's ending saying that one of those rabbits was Doomguy's pet was, as I see it, meant to be a semi-ironic joke about how the big tough guy has a pet rabbit, cus Id was literally just like "dude what if lol"
Obviously there's nothing wrong with that, and classic Doom didn't need a deep intricate story, but Eternal (as well as Doom 2016 I suppose) took that and other aspects of the original games and built a story off of them. The reason it works, aside from having the gameplay be the main focus, is that classic Doom's aspects like Daisy, the UAC, etc. are all just barebones story telling with no actual context behind them aside from making the player feel like a badass space marine. I disagree, that's clearly not what he's saying. The design is visibly very different, and it's inferior to the original because it just isn't scary or uncanny enough. He's way overdesigned. Look at this guy, he's not armor plated, he doesn't have spikes and thorns, he doesn't have glowing eyes, he doesn't even have any claws or anything, he looks like he could almost be human, but very obviously isn't.

I don't think newDoom's monster design is all bad, some of it is pretty cool (I actually like the Baron and Caco), but some of it really misses its mark.

DAKKA and Russian Overkill have a menu backdrop map that is a scene with moving camera.

Treasure Tech has an intro made with actors and textured walls.

It's the same method I used for Golden Souls 2's intro and ending cutscenes.
In short, think of the map as your theater and the entities as your actors, you can play around with actor states through ACS, move them around, play sound effects, change elements of the map as the cutscene goes on, it's super simple once you get into it! Perhaps the hard part is just synching everything up, and that requires constantly testing the cutscene over and over, but with a bit of patience you can have some pretty convincing cutscenes!

It is good and I definitely recommend it if you like doom/duke/quake etc. As others have pointed out, it is rushed and unfinished, some maps just aren't as good as others and it ends out of nowhere. It plays really well however. There's a newer version that has better maps and feels more polished, I'm not sure if all the levels have been done.

setting deadlines works for some, but I personally think speedmapping is a slaughterhouse of ideas. you'll be left without any by the time you decide to do a "real" map, if that moment ever comes and you don't burn out along the way.
progression from big strokes to little details isn't some mapping invention, it applies to all crafts/artforms. that said, there tends to exist a blockout fetishism that makes no sense for a single hobbyist mapper. do what's practical for you.

Unambitious randomizers are the ones I hate. Where you see the same basic weapons we've seen hundreds of times before, no new sprites or sounds either, just pretty much 1:1 the same shit we've seen before, you know what I'm talking about: Shit like that one assault rifle Mike12 made years ago, or that shotgun with the holes in the barrel.
And the plasma gun always using the reload sound from Doom 3 with no editing whatsoever.
I've seen some shitty gameplay mods like cash money doom or whatever the fuck it's called, and while it IS indeed shitty, at least it's trying to do something weird and different from the rest, so I rank it up higher than what I had just mentioned before.

I'm fine with gameplay mods that stick to the basics but at least try to give them a little flair, like Weapons of Saturn or Project Babel.

Then download the config file from the link above and put it in the music packs folder, then open chocolate-doom-setup.exe or crispy and you have to manually type out the path to that folder, and the files will automatically play whenever it's OG Doom music, and will use your MIDI player for all other WAD MIDIs.

I'm trying to generate levels on Oblige with Obaddon. Using Oblige alone without addons I can generate full megawads but with the Obaddon addon active I always get the same problem even when generating a single level:

ObFab-Prefabs-7.70.pk3: Script Error: wadfab_load: failed to load VERTEXES lump

There is an issue on github but it has been closed:

The room had light soursed on the inside too, so that made sense. Cleaning textures up helped. Though I overlooked some when made this screenshot.
