It takes some GPU but I'm currently loving CRT-Royale Kurozumi Edition. To me it looks better than my real Sony consumer set.
Can I fix these bendy lines in the service menu?
are there any HDMI/DP to VGA converters that can do interlacing and high resolutions like 1440/1536p?

Got one of these the other day for the cost of nothing
When they make new games and movies, are they intended for new monitors and tvs? Do they still look good on CRT?
>>6556415new games and movies are mostly intended for 1080p or 2160p screens, higher res than most CRTs would do. you'd lose detail watching them on a CRT.
My Trinitron HMD A200 PC monitor shows ghosting with white colors on dark backgrounds. I believe that the issue is with the VGA cable, but the cable is part of the monitor, unlike the power cable I cannot unplug it.Is there any way to actually change the VGA cable? The ghosting is not bad enough to be an issue most of the time, but when playing dark games like Doom 3 is very noticiable.
I don't want to sound blasphemous, but are there good ReShade CRT filters?
Do you know any PVM with AR coating? It seems like only consumer crts have it.
>>6556840PVMs and BVMs don't even have black filters. Their gray screens only look good in dim lit rooms.
Is a 27" Trinitron going to be too heavy for 1 person? I am relatively strong but I also remember how heavy they are.I found one for free but I don't have a stand or any friends to help
>>6554724Sony WEGA master race reporting in.
>>6557049If it's a flat trinitron, a 27 inch set will be in the neighborhood of 100lbs, maybe a bit less. Lighter if it's curved. It should be fine, 27 is the cutoff for most people. 32 and up is an issue because they're also hard or impossible to get your hands around them in a good way for carrying but unless you have t rex arms the 27 should be manageable

>>6557479SD TVs operate at a single fixed frequency (15kHz) which means they can natively display either 240p or 480i. EDTV CRTs also operate at a fixed frequency, 33.75kHz (540p/1080i), though they can also accept a 15kHz signal and upscale it to 540p (and further crop/zoom that 540p image to create a 480p image), but that introduces lag and often doesn't look very good with 240p sources. A multiformat can automatically switch between 15kHz, 31kHz, 45kHz (240p/480i, 480p, and 720p respectively) based on the signal it receives, so it does not need to further process the signal before displaying it, brainlet.

>>6557808How much lag are you under the impression they have, little zoomer? Did you think your magical new PVM instantly displays phosphors the exact same moment it receives the signal? Or that it happens in less than a few ms? Try doing some basic googling kiddo before you make yourself look any stupider
>>6557617Says the pc emulator user? I would at least understand that statement if you used scalers but you aren't even using real hardware.>>6558021Analog video is nearly instantaneous, it's how light guns work. That applies to all standard definition sets, from professional sets to rf only paperweights.
>>6557479>>6558021The 8ms is an average number if a measurement of refresh rate of 60Hz at dead center of the frame given over given time.In an analog CRT, the image is written to the first line of the screen as fast as it is received, with only 'nanoseconds' of delay for the signal to traverse the wiring from input to the electron gun. Digital signals need processing power and memory to prepare the frame for display, this is where 'milliseconds' of input lag occurs in digital displays. While the original statement is true, it is false equivalency with respect to refresh lag and input lag. The latter of which a CRT is effectively zero and excels at for vidya.
>>6558119Thank you for proving my two points, that1. it takes 8.33 ms for a CRT to show the image (fully), and2. you are retardedWith your (retarded) logic, my LCD has only .7ms of lag. In reality, it takes 9ms for my LCD to show the image.Let me explain it in simpler terms for the zoomer brain. If we take a slow motion camera, hook up the CRT and LCD to the same input, what will we see happen? We will see the CRT image fully appear only .7ms sooner than the LCD image appears. This fact makes CRT owners assmad because they never knew this, and it defeats one of their main purposes for owning such shitty hipster technology.>>6558086>>6558001>>6557937>>6557909BTFO. Finally found a CRT smaller than 20 inches with s-video/component. Took me a few weeks of pruning every site I could find that would sell CRTs. Got it free too, kind of ridiculous how much people will gouge prices for sets these sizes.
>>6558431>>6558435I was hoping you would BTFO yourself further and embarrass yourself even more in front of everyone for us all to laugh at even more. Now, let's read my post again which you quoted>A 9ms LCDNow let's see what you compared to a CRT. Not a 9ms LCD! Oh no, you're wrong again and proved it yourself! In fact, you didn't even post the model of that LCD whatsoever. You just pulled an irrelevant example out of your ass that doesn't have to do with anything. Now, try that test with a 9ms LCD and see what happens. Go on. What happens? What's the result? Oh how sad, you can't answer this question because it proves my point and ruins yours. Yes, a 9ms LCD against a CRT shows that there is less than 1ms of difference, and it makes you seeeeethe.

>>6558456Nice man. What brand, got any pics of it in action?
>As a result of this test I can conclude that in fact there is a very little input lag on the 120Hz LCDs like ViewSonic VX2268wm compared on what you get on a good CRT display, but still there is some, even if it is very little. >>6558478I mean, who cares. It's one metric. I'm sure it sucks vs a CRT in some other category.Am I the only one who would gladly get rid of my CRT if there was a display that matched or bettered it in every category? Like, usually for free, you can get a display that will show any /vr/ console at it's native output res with no scaling etc required, is basically the baseline for "no" input lag, has contrast, viewing angle, colors that are only matched or beat by plasma/OLED, and has NO motion blur outside of phosphor trails. Wake me up when there's a display that can do everything a CRT can, as good or better, simultaneously.

>>6558462It's a Toshiba AF, besides some geometry problems because flat, it's actually in great shape. It's bright to the point where it actually hurts my eyes though. >>6558478It's been this way for a while, and the difference isn't enough to matter which is why esports competitions with millions of dollars at stake haven't used them since the beginning of the last decade. CRTs still have their place as retro displays probably forever, but when stuff like microLEDs come in that match or exceed CRTs with nanosecond response times that allow it to have similar "zero lag" times which will also result in similar motion clarity, it will be impossible to recommend CRT usage outside of its niche.
>>6558523I got rid of mine because of the high pitched noise they emit. It’s so nice having silent LCDs even if the motion isn’t technically as good. I play a lot of RPGs so I don’t really care about motion.

Why do games look smoother on a CRT vs emulated?
>>6561262Carts don't have perfectly square / sharp "pixels", the parts of them that get lit up by the electron gun aren't perfectly round, they're also seperated by a grille/mask.Also most video connectors used besides pure rgb or component are blurrier than pure digital to digital, this is even seen on hd scalers that take "lesser" connectors as inputs.
>>6561332That looks like shit. Is it emulation or what setup is it?
Got an old SHVC SNES and recently its started to have wind like distortion on my CRT (29" Megaview). I tried a different AC adapter, still does it. I recapped it a couple of years ago and checked all the solder points and they're still good. I read the "7805" regulator might be noisy and I can replace it or add caps, but the website said the regulator causes the white vertical bars (and I have wind). I tried a couple different carts and the wind distortion is always there. Slowly rolls up and down the screen. Any ideas?

I got this CRT that appears to be in nearly perfect condition but has tearing like lines on certain parts of the screen. When turned off, there doesn't appear to be any damage to the glass and there is some gunk since I just recently obtained it from some guy who was keeping it in his garage. DO I just need to clean it up or is there possibly something wrong internally with the screen? They kind of look like thin scratches but also appear like static I can't tell and I'm kind of new to this.
>>6563687Sounds like scratches. Did you try running your fingernail over the lines? You could also try shining a flashlight at the screen. Any scratches/defects on the scratch will cast shadows.

>>6563592free ones are generally pretty easy to find on Facebook marketplace / Craigslist. Usually they are free because they're one of the larger "need two people to move it" sets to the point where it is a physical burden on space to keep it.
>>6563801If that is the case, are there ways to resolve that without noticeably effecting the screen?
>>6563801>>6564002I checked again like you suggested, and there does appear to be what is faint but observable scratches. They become very noticeable against light backgrounds though. I might have some ideas about what to do but if you know a good suggestion I would appreciate that.
I'm perfectly happy with my Sony Trinitron EXCEPT I would really love to have progressive 640x480 on it (it only does 480i), specially now that I managed to hook a PC to it. Is there any similar consumer TV that does 480p, or should I switch to a CRT Monitor? What would be the closest thing available in a range of 21"~24"? Ideally flat.
>>6565754I still have my old IBM p275 monitor. think its 21 inch flat. Bought cheap as refub back in 2005. Had my 360 hooked up to it for years. Best thing ever for playing CoD. Thing supports up to 2048 x 1536.

>>6564013It can be done effectively with minor scratches. One method involes buffing the glass with some sort of chemical. Apparently it's a long, laborious process. Some CRTs have an anti-glare layer over the screen. Peeling that off the screen can actually "fix" scratches as well since the scratches are actually on the plastic covering rather than the glass tube. I've done the latter with several of my "scratched" monitors.
>>6568196I'm in California so that makes sense. I got mine by going door to door in my neighborhood. I'd just tell people I could take old TVs off their hands and they were often happy to oblige. Have you tried second-hand video game stores? I got a 30" Panny with component for 50 bucks from a local store.
is it worth it to emulate games on a crt from a wii? im a poorfag that doesn't wanna buy a $70 snes flashcart and emulating shit on a pc just doesn't "feel right", excuse my autism.
>>6567269Not that anon you are talking to, but to my knowledge no SD consumer CRT does 480p. You'll have to look at HD CRTs and CRTs that support multiformat (specific pvm and bvm models).

Anons, are CRTs bad for your health?
>>6568228Does that mean there is no actual consumer grade crt compatible with progressive scan for certain games on a system like the gamecube?
>>6568213Do you know how I can check if it has a filter over the screen? And if not, what would the process be to clean small scratches? I have some material like glass polish scratch remover chemicals, that you can use to make glass clearer for car lights, windows and things like that. But I don't know if that is compatible with the specific type of glass of crt glass that I'm looking at here. This is a Sony Wega Triniton btw. Could it also withstand things like glasses polisher used for glasses? Because the screen is also a bit dirty in general and I need to fix that problem as well.
I've got a 27-inch panasonic; s-video, nice and bright, slight geometry issues. The only problem I have with it is that the image quality is so grainy compared to screenshots posted here. I don't remember my old tubes being so grainy when I was younger. Could the cables be causing the effect?
>>6554724If I want to emulate a PS1 game on my laptop and connect it to my CRT, would one of these HDMI to Composite converters do the trick?
>>6555890No. You, like me, will have to open the fucking thing up, reseat the yoke, and get better placement on the magnetic strips to get the edges correct.
>>6569854It would, but gross. At least try it on a hacked psp with a cables or something.
>>6569854When it comes to connecting a PC to a CRT-TV, nothing short of a signal converter + crt_emudriver setup is worth your money or trouble. >>6572523I picked this tv up from a garage sale, so the odds that the previous owner tampered with that are unlikely. Is it known if Sony Wegas carried anti-glare filters? Because if so, this one probably would still have it because there's no way the previous owner messed with any of that.
how will running a vga cable through a dvi adapter affect video quality/lag and all that? is an hdmi adapter better? my card doesn't have vga in.
>>6570885It would if you have crt_emudriver. By my last comment I only meant you could do without a signal transcoder
Not trying to troll, just genuinely curious what the appeal is of playing on a CRT instead of just using a retrotink on an HDTV. The only reason I can think of is the lack of input lag, but I don't even notice any when I play on my HDTV
>>6572531>Sony WegaMany do have an anti-glare protective film on them. What's the model? The user manual would probably tell you if it does. Keep in mind that removing the anti-glare sheet will make the screen noticeably shinier. Shouldn't be a problem when gaming in a dark room.
>>6572801Literally autism and nostalgia.
>>6572801Input lag is very real with retro consoles. Its not some autism minute shit. I was blown away at how sluggish some fightinggames felt
>>6573308Were you using a .2ms LCD?

Heres a shitty photo of my 14L5
What's the best way to connect my PC to my 20L5? I just wanna watch my pirated anime on it.
>>6573812a simple hdmi to ypbpr converter will do the trick, but do check what frequencies your pvm can handle (and what resolution it can display) if you don't want to fry it.

>>6574127But it's all the way down

>>6574251>>6574296No need to get sarcastic, I may as well assume with "this is the monitor I just got" that you may not realise that brightness and contrast adjustments don't work the same as they do on an lcd monitor, whenever I reply to any questions I always assume they're a mouth breathing retard because its easier to start at the most basic solution.

How can i connect stuff to an imac g3 in order to use it like a regular screen? Like as a monitor or a tv. While still allowing it to function as a computer otherwise.I want to connect it with composite cables too. For my consoles
>>6576248At the moment it’s the best, I don’t think it can get too much betterYeetron is pretty good, it’s used on sonic mania I think
>>6576334Without opening it up and nigrigging the insides entirely to cut out the mac component and just make it a dummy tube somehow no, it has no video in and most models didn't even have a video out. Someone has probably figured out how to nigrig the insides.
>>6576248Crt-Royale is the best shader if you know how to tweak it.Here are some screenshots I made at 8k: https://postimg.cc/gallery/v8xdsLr. (filesizes are too big to post in this thread)Obviously, 8k is very slow even with today's hardware. 1440p or 4k already are plenty enough to do aperture grille but they are not enough to do slotmask.
Do these work good?
>>6577027yes I have one. I'm not sure if it looks all that good, though -- it's been a while.
>>6577027It works, but you'll still be taking a 480p signal and passing it through to a 1080p screen, so temper your expectations accordingly. Also mine has an annoying audio buzz, not sure if that's a common problem or I was just unlucky.
>>6577037>>6577204Is there also one of these for the original Xbox?
>>6577508Yup, you'll have to do your own research though. I have no clue about the quality.
>>6577027It doesn't handle dark screens well. Mine has video noise that's noticeable on dark colors. But once you're in a game it looks fine.
>>6577529Oh, I have a OLED tv, sounds like it will be quite shit on it.
>>6576952Retroarch noob here, how do I run it at 8k? I only have a 1080p screen and have just been setting SNES games to their lowest res, I think 240 or something, since that's what they were originally (again, I think)
>>6577885First find and change these lines found in retroarch.cfg to this:>aspect_ratio_index = "22">video_fullscreen_x = "5760">video_fullscreen_y = "4320">custom_viewport_width = "5760">custom_viewport_height = "4320"This is basically 320x240 times 18, but I also just found out that you won't get any scaling artifacts at 8k if you throw other resolutions at it such as 256x224 (SNES) or 320x224 (Genesis).Next, choose a game then select the shader. Then go to Settings -> video -> scaling, and set aspect ratio to "custom". Now it will output the 8k resolution. After that go fullscreen by pressing "f" and then f8 to take a screenshot. You can find my shader config here:Aperture grille: https://pastebin.com/qvaKjUR7Slotmask: https://pastebin.com/x4deJ6CxSave it as what-ever-you-want-to-call-it.glslp in the root of your shaders folder.
Can anyone tell me if you need an original remote to a tv to access its service menu? I think I found a service menu code for my Samsung TX-r2035 but I can't access with my remote despite having all of the needed buttons.
I bet I haven't used my snes in close to ten years, was so pleasantly surprised to see my old 100% save was still there
>>6575521>Sony WEGA KV-20FS120I'm fairly certain that model still had the anti-glare coating. You should be able to peel it off after removing the front bezel. Use an x-acto knife to get it started.
>>6578183you don't need the original. some universal remotes are more compatible than others. Some tvs give access from the face buttons on the set also.
>>6573402Not him but I use the lowest ms led possible to own shitters on fightcade. Every form of emulation ever has always had very noticeable lag. As soon as i tried real hardware the difference was insane. It isn't a meme but it definitely isn't worth it

As a relative outsider to the CRT scene (I basically got the two monitors I wanted and didn't bother looking for more), it amuses me to see the shift in desires, or maybe lowered expectations. It used to be "holy grails" were things like Sony BVMs, decently sized Sony PVMs, NEC XM/XP29, and other pro monitors, now I see posts where a consumer set is looked at as a top tier desired item. How much longer before 15" kitchen-tier TV/VCR combos are seen as desirable sets commanding $100+?
>>6581787I think professional monitors are still "Grails", but no one wants to pay a premium for them. My local craigslist and facebook marketplace is still full of free Trinitons, wegas, and other consumer sets here in socal. I think most people consider scoring a free Trinitron a bigger score than finding someone willing to sell their 20L5 for a grand.
>>6579171Is this just a crt thing, or should I stop using my PC in the dark too?
Can you guys id this one? Someone is selling it for 10 bucks online. But they are refusing to make the effort to measure it or give me a model number
What's the best way to hook up a Dreamcast to one of these old monitors? Do I need a VGA box or will any vga cable with a female to female adapter work just as well? Any tips regarding audio would also be appreciated.

>>6581917Yes purchase a PVM on evay and have it shipped to you.

>>6572341What's the difference between crt monitors and crt tvs? Will emulated games look better on crt monitor or do I still need a tv for that and it's only good for pc games?
Well, can you?
>>6572341I have a black model, pretty good monitors, if it's cheap, I'd say yeah it's worth it.
>>6584512I've found even better one I thinkhttps://www.cnet.com/products/samsung-syncmaster-765mb-crt-monitor-17-series/And also for less than $5.
>>6584443>big whirring noise of safety>minimal delay>too heavy for rioters to steal
>>6584376The difference is that you need to jump through a lot of hoops to connect a PC to a standard definition tv meanwhile connecting it to a VGA crt monitor will work right out of the box. The same is somewhat true vice versa, it's a pain to connect old consoles to a computer monitor without a line doubler or whatever. If you want to emulate with a crt look you can either take a homebrew Wii and play on a crt tv or grab a PC and play it on a crt monitor with a low resolution set in the settings
>>6584443Low end sets are good, zero chance of being rebadged crap marked up, they all sit at either an acceptable level of quality or above. This was Sony at their peak doing pretty much everything in-house.
maybe this is heresy to ask, but how do you guys feel about composite for games with heavy dithering, like MGS or silent hill?
>>6584443Even Sony's low end sets are good, the baseline of quality is generally higher than all the other brands around it. Sony didn't mark up anything lower tier manufacturers, needing to use their patented special sauce meant doing it all in-house with their Bubble economy cash.Shadow mask sets weren't "inferior" to Trinitron sets but it's much easier to find a shit shadow mask than a bad Trinitron.
>>6585205Intentionally switching my consoles back to composite for a video effect is too cumbersome for me to want to care tbhq
>>6584796good points anon lol!

how bad is vga-dvi adapter? does running those cables through an adapter affect the picture/lag?the only crt monitor near me is a 15" dell for $20
>>6585635I have a vga hdmi adapter and I think it's really bad.
I love this Royale xm29 shader but can anyone tell me why I get these thick lines across the screen with it? You can see it best here in the black part. I've tried adjusting all parameters and can't get rid of them.
>>6585656Try turning on integer scaling in the video settings. Uneven scaling is more apparent at lower resolutions such as 1080p.Also, the PSP outputs 480x272. 272 * 4 = 1088 which is very close to 1080. You can try setting the height to 4x. This should only cut off 8 lines in total.
>>6585659What resolution should I be using?>>6586103Integer fixes it, but I guess there's no way to use it and be full screen? Though now I notice some lines when I use PS1 core with this shader.
