I was. KI Gold wasn't even in top 50 best sellers on N64. and we're really scrapping the bottom of the barrel here, when #40-50 was games like Mission Impossible, Army Men and Excitebike 64

my point is: in the current year of our lord 2023, every single kusoge worth playing is played online and has some sort of a community. even jank / poverty stuff like Breakers Revenge, Karnov, and so on.
even the first KI has fewer people than you'd expect. KI2 / Gold just barely has anyone caring about it, period. when your game is overshadowed by poverty fighting games, you know something went wrong.

KI2 is possible to play, though they say the performance is bad. and I think it's still possible to play N64 version through RetroArch netplay.

I said already that it wasn't a big hit even on N64. this is when the original KI that was a big hit despite being a late SNES game (and competing with MK). FGC types don't seem to remember it much either. and your average player already had Tekken 2 and VF2.

SFA3 came out in 1998 you dim cunt. and then 3rd Strike in 1999. SF really only went into hibernation after 2000, but even then Marvel continued to go strong, whereas KI was pretty much gone.

Not the reason. Capcom ported Street Fighter 2 to Genesis, PC Engine and 3do, neither of which had enough buttons for a Street Fighter game. 6-button controllers were made for SF2 apecifically.

I'm glad this post was made. KI is always interesting to me...

Gameplay-wise the game should be better than Mortal Kombat, more fun to play. There is far more depth and thought put behind it.

Something about it seems so dull though. It goes with the same 6 button fighter scheme as Street Fighter, simliar command inputs, but throws in a bunch of strange and offbeat characters that seemed geared to 13 year olds. It feels like the devs just throw everything at the sink and hope it sticks. There is no uniformity, some may like that I get it but it does not look pretty. The only characters that don't look whack to me are honestly: Jago, Orchid, Fulgore, and TJ Combo.

KI is similar to Mortal Kombat in this regard: When it came out there was nothing like it. That was its selling point, the CGI, the combos. Mortal Kombat had the gore, the attempt at a story, the characters that were interesting, the simplicity...

Now that the fighting game industry has changed, CGI and 50 hit combos can't be your only selling point for KI. Gore and tacky Digitized actors can't save MK.

MK got with the program, chose to focus on its story, lore, world building. They carted to the average fighting game player, while putting enough in the gameplay to make it fun for the FGC. Mortal Kombat certainly has its problems, the shitty animation, etc. But it is still here for a reason while KI is forgotten as a relic forgotten to time.
