So what in your opinion was the best retro year for video game releases?

1998 and 2001.

1998
Why?
Stealth video games.
Thief The Dark Project, Tenchu, Metal Gear Solid, Commandos. The most important year in defining a new genre. That's more of a personal assessment based on my own preferences.

>muh 1998
where the fuck did this meme come from? it's not even the best year of the 5th gen. both 1997, 1999 trump 1998.
>>
2004. San Andreas, Half Life 2, Gmod, Riddick Butcher Bay, Halo 2, NFS:U2, Hitman Contracts, Fable, WoW, Tiger Woods PGA 2005

You're not smart or interesting by being a contrarian.

It's 1994, at least in the US.

>Most robust year for 16 bit gaming and the last year of it's dominance. Tons of classics (DKC, FF III, Super Metroid, S&K, MK II) with lots of great B titles as well.
>Also the year that the SNES finally overcame the Genesis as the system really showed off what it could do this year. Plus Nintendo finally got on the aggressive marketing bandwagon at the time. Super Game Boy was one of the GOAT peripherals
>About a dozen active systems and while many were flops, they were trying to push the medium into new directions. It really contributed to the atmosphere where it felt like a lot was going on in the industry.
>Magazines were possibly their strongest here as well with the highest page counts seen in the west (400 page EGM in December).
>The DOOM phenomenon showed that PCs could do action games even better than consoles and was a legit sensation (I know it was released in 1993)
>Arcades, while slipping in fluence were still considered the gold standard for games. Arcades were still commonplace and cabinets could be found everywhere
>We were gearing up for the release of the Saturn, the PSX and Nintendo's Project Reality loomed on the horizon.

I realize a lot of this is tied to "you had to be there to understand" but it really was an exciting time in an industry that was evolving rapidly. For someone like me who considers 8 and 16-bit to be the peak of gaming, there is a lot of wistful end of an era feelings I associate with this year(though there was a lot of good 16 bit stuff released in 1995).

This
>Starcraft
>Fallout 2
>GTA
>Baldurs Gate
>Half Life
>>
Whole 1996-1999 was like a dream marathon.
>>
>>10254319
1987 was peak 8-bits.
1994 was peak 16-bits.
1998 was peak 32/64-bits.
2004 was peak 6th gen.
2010 was peak 7th gen.
2017 was peak 8th gen.
>>
>>10254346
1997 had a lot of bangers but not quite as much variety as 1998. 1999 was objectively a better year for PC gaming though.
>>
>>10254319
But for me personally, it was 2001. Every single active console got a ton of room to shine including the Gamecube and Xbox which had just come out.
>>
>>10254319
The 90's in general were just great for video games. There was a new console, handheld, add-on, and a bunch of mainstream titles almost every year for a while. It's harder to find a bad year for video games during that decade

U forgot this classic
>>
>1989 - Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, Game Boy, Atari Lynx
>1990 - TurboGrafx-CD and Game Gear
>1991 - SNES and Neo Geo AES
>1992 - SEGA CD and CDi
>1993 - 3DO, Jaguar, and FM Towns Marty
>1994 - 32X and Neo Geo CD
>1995 - Saturn, PS1, Virtual Boy
>1996 - N64 and Game Boy Pocket
>1998 - Game Boy Color and Game Boy Light
>1999 - Dreamcast and NGPC

We got new consoles/add-ons almost every single year for an entire decade barring 1997, not even counting Euro and Japanese computers or the games themselves
>>
whatever year re2 oot sfa3 fzx mgs came out in
>>
Lol anything prior to kikes at the ADL spying on our chats. Thank god I went hard as fuck on the retro stuff, I'm not meant for the modern times.
>>
>>10254319
The steaming hot summer of 1992.
>>
>>10254496
seconding this, 2004 was insane to me. I can't even remember a year that comes close.
>>
>>10255168
>1994 was peak 16-bits.
1993 actually, Link to the Past and Super Metroid in one year
and 2007 for 7th gen, that was a top tier year. what in the fuck even came out in 2010 that would have you say that.
also 2015 for 8th, why did you choose 17, fucking mario and zelda? COME ON.
>>
>>10258187
Link to the Past was 1992
>>
>>10258315
damn, well, 16 bit was all over the place and had no good year

And Super Metroid was 1994! You could make a strong argument for 1992 (SF 2, Zelda, TMNT IV) and 1995 (DKC 2, YI, EB, CT) but I think 1994 is the best overall year.

is it even up for discussion?
I don't think another year had so many genre defining masterpieces.
HL1 or MGS alone could make 98 the best year. But OOT, Tekken 3, RE2, StarCraft, and PDS just cement it.
I doubt there's another year that even comes close. Maybe '04 for HL2 and GTA:SA... but still don't think so

Ok yes 1993

All of you retards itt forgetting the obvious choice:

I'm very mixed on 2007
on is own it's one of the three best years for gaming for me (1998, 2004, 2007). but 2007 also started very bad trends that led to gaming's downfall.

take COD4. it was a great game, but started the trend of yearly brown and piss FPS slop.
take Assassins's Creed. great game on it's own but started the overused tired old Ubisoft open world formula.
take Oblivion. good game but started the mictrotransactions trend.
>>
>>10259708
the COD trend is a good one though, it's a series of COD if you like COD you enjoy COD

Also in aus was this fucking gem. I had no idea what AFL was when I moved to Australia and on my first day of school some kid invited me over to play this.

Next thing you know I am signed up for junior football and ended up playing and watching AFL for the next 20 years because of that kid.

When Squaresoft wasnt Squeenix and they did more then just Jrpgs.
