The issue is actually needing them because Skyla and Dawn both buff defense, and both are paired together with her more often than not.

No cutscene battle, only one cutscene, apart from Kukui none of the trainers you fight are event present afterwards, none of the other characters barring Kukui, Brendan, and Glacia talk to May. It seems like it was just stapled on together with trainers speaking to each other at the lobby as an afterthought.Well at least she had an actual event unlike Alder.
