Iris return is hyped for a few reasons:

1. It proves this saga will bring back old characters, and ones people don't expect. Prior to the opening few people thought Iris would return

2. Iris was handled poorly due to BW's writing style, but seeing Iris in a different series will likely have her written differently. Likewise Ash is battle-centric and a bit more like his old self again whereas BW Ash was reset, so Iris' "what a kid" stuff might not even be used this series.

3. Iris might be a recurring battler for Ash.


Besides that there's a lot of twitter/tumblr fans who are really excited about Iris who seemingly always liked her. They were hoping she would return back when XY was airing. Most of them praise Iris for her brown skin and for being a "kick ass" female battler...whatever that means.

I think I've always been a fan of the more minor/subtle shipping moments. Don't get me wrong, payoffs like the kiss or Ash and may splitting the ribbon are extremely gratifying to me, but it's the little things that really get me invested. Those moments of Ash and Dawn learning from each other while also having a playful and argumentative side. Misty and Ash's teasing but still being close. The alola girls had to split screen time with the massive cast which gave each of them very few moments but when it did happen it was pretty cute.
