Unless you're using the strategy of putting an extra break type defense gunner on the attack machine as your damage dealer, no. Their role is usually to buff and break shield, so they won't be doing much damage in the first place.

I just finished Very Hard, I had 3 winds and 1 gear Yuri on the damage. The boss attacks like once a turn but takes like 8 shield points from you. It charges its SP like every 2-3 attacks.
But I think SSR Minami with her upgraded SP skill did the most

Beating the boss itself isn't hard, but the challenge is grinding out the score for rewards. I winged it and got around 21m in one battle of VH.

how to:

The 5 boss memories make easy stat sticks if you've been at it for a while. Not sure if the main memory skill on the rider affects the gunner unless it specifically says it's for the pair like the UR crit damage memories.

I happened to luckshit into the meta in 30 rolls, but SSR Michiru and SSR Otsuki can produce similar results if you don't care for the crit damage buff. Keep in mind that while China Iruka and Michiru have OP utility, they have unusually low shield count for defenders.

I also somehow never got any SSR Hiori or Kiri dupes.

I tried max welfare Yuri instead of sp4 SSR Kiri and it just did not work out. Yuri doesn't have an additional damage multiplier on her SP on break/crit/etc, doesn't benefit from her support passive if she's paired with Hiori, and tends to cause a delay in getting the initial kill on the boss because of the low damage on her normal cards.

I don't think it's that bad if you had a team prepped based on the preview tweets. Once you've registered a decent high score, they throw enough refills at you to blast through a good chunk of the rewards. Don't know if they carry over for the next time they run the event, but they should. Once you've cleaned out the welfare mats, tickets, and other exclusive stuff like poses, you're home free and everything else is just extra.
