Don't get me wrong, there was always goofy bullshit but there was some semblance of verisimilitude. The main draw for the game, at least before and at launch, was that appeal. People were shitting the bed at actual fencing techniques being used (halfswording, mordhau). The issue is they cranked the sillyness up to 15 and seem to have lost sight of their original ideas.

The original producer where the fuck did he go? had clear ideas of what he wanted the game to look and feel like but the problem was that he couldn't figure out how the game would actually play, they ended up going for the art of war system because it actually translated into something sensible while still retaining the idea of actual weapon combat, certain moves ended up not making it into the final release because of animation issues or something else, i.e. Warden's heavy finishers were mordhau swings in the beta, but because of his very shitty resume he had no idea how to properly balance it.

He had very clear ideas of how to make each hero have a unique feel and identity but didn't seem to understand game balance, even if unlock tech wasn't a thing the for honor esports tournament would've still been a complete shitshow because the producer didn't understand a single thing about multiplayer games let alone fighting games. His idea of a gritty for honor died when the game crashed and burned and he left to parts unknown.

The game under Roman's leadership may have gotten more fantastical but the game is unironically better for it because Roman could strike a better balance between actually playable and various historical concepts and allowing for more diversity in terms of what sort heroes and abilities are present in the game without going overboard.

Post Roman, we'll just have to see what the new Viking Hero will be like because the Warmonger. Gryphon and the Outlanders were just gimmicky experiments so them getting sillier is understandable because that's intentional. If the Viking Hero ends up being something ridiculous as well then yeah they've lost it

Just my two cents, but it seemed that the original intent for the combat system was supposed to be something closer to Chiv/Mordhau/M&B, instead of the fighter-ish game we have no. A back and forth of strikes and blocks until someone gets a hit in via feinting or gets a guard break. The issue (and I assume the issue still) is that combos end as soon as an attack is blocked, attacks were too slow and you had a limited chain. Most other slasher games aren't like that.

Hard disagree. The game has become outright fantastical with little basis in history or verisimilitude. The combat also went down the shitter as now its based on shit tons of CC, unblockable spam/mixups and 50/50 guesses.
It really isn't my cup of tea anymore so I may be a bit outdated. The last time I played was when they released the ching chong han-ish characters who didn't really fit the setting (much like most of the newer ones). I also remember fighting the pirate bitch.
I was hoping at some point they would return to form and we might get a glimpse of what could have been but after they kept releasing goofy shit and the same 5 armor pieces I dipped.

There's no CC outside of feats, do you mean the wide hitboxes on certain moves? as for the mixups and 50/50s they serve the purpose of viable offense because the biggest issue with the game is how reactable a lot of things are to the general playerbase, there was a poll on reddit to get the general reaction times and light attack reactable of the playerbase on reddit a while ago and the average reaction time was 200ms and most people could block lights semi consistently this is post CCU too.

You need things to force reactions and those things have to be unreactable to an extent because otherwise you get the incredibly unfun turtle meta. Mordhau and Chivalry aren't different in this regard because feints, kicks and accels exist and work in similar fashion to 50/50s and bashes in For Honor, the difference being that blocking is an active thing you do in those games whereas in For Honor it's passive so how you open up opponents looks different but still follows the same principal.

No, the wu lin work fine in the setting and are for the most part more historically accurate than the base game vikings, it's just that introduced more fantastical feats into the game. As for pirate yeah, I agree that the gun is goofy because of how it's implemented. As for armor they're slowly trying to add more styles for each character but they're slow because budget lmao. They outsourced the design to a shanghai division recently.

Thats not surprising. The swing time for most lights is what? 600ms? Mordhau has around 500 or less, as do most other slashers. FH is fairly slow in that regard and again, since (I think) you can't chain combos when they are blocked you don't have much hope for landing normal attacks.

The GB is supposed to act as a kick or at least function the same way. M&B, Chiv and Mordhau all have a kick as a way to open up blocks or turtling opponents. As for the 50/50/bashes I don't think they are a good comparison. You can easily react to most feints, morphs and drags in chiv/mh/M&B (if their servers were better) where as in FH it is guaranteed damage if you guess wrong. You also don't really get locked out of your character via special moves and have to sit through a 3-second cutscene like you do in FH either.

500ms for openers with 100ms delayed indicators, some heroes have 400ms chain lights
some heroes also have enhanced lights which allow chains to continue even when blocked, there is also now frame advantage so light finishers leave you disadvantaged while heavies give you plus frames

GBs are not an opener and do not function as kicks in Mordhau/Chiv because they're easily countered if done from neutral. Bashes like Centurions legion kick are more akin to kicks in MordChiv.

Half true, medival china fits because of the weapon diversity, plenty of references for classical chinese martial arts and plenty of unique yet still tone fitting armor pieces, only downside was the lack of masks because the chinese believed heavily in showing face, they're also right next door to Japan so it's not weird. A precedent for other types of warriors existing outside of the three original factions was already established with the inclusion of Centurion, Gladiator and Highlander who are explicitly foreign to the factions they fight under.

The point of them is to mix up/throw off the rhythm game your are playing with your opponent by using an attack with little/no windup and to crack a blocking opponents guard. This is especially true for M&B where shields block stuff from all directions. It is also meant to stop face hugging.

Mordhau is pretty shit desu. The parry timing is very strict and their netcode is probably the worst I have seen in any medieval slasher. I play in third person (im used to mount and blade) and the amount of times I have seen whiffed attacks hit or attacks go through my shield/parry is astounding. I got around 50 hours in total and then deleted it from my steam account. FH also has its issues, but blocking isn't anywhere near as tight as in Mordhau for timing requirements.

The Cent/Glad and everything else was poorly thought out and poorly implemented too, but it somewhat makes sense seeing as the knights speak Latin and have some vestiges of Latin architecture floating around on some of their maps. Out of all the factions the "vikings" got the worst treatment IMO.

I see, I haven't gotten around to trying out Chiv 2 yet so I can't comment too much about it specifically.

So basically it's still the same general idea of opening up your opponent or countering them with parries and what not. But what about initiating fights, if most things like feinting and what not are reactable wouldn't it turn into whomever attacks first loses kinda situations?

That's how it works for most additional characters in hero based games including traditional fighters like Street Fighter and Tekken. New characters aren't prestablished nor is there any necessary reason to do so because it gives you more freedom in terms of what you can add. Cent and Gladiator make just as much sense as Afeera does if you talk about cultural relavance to the original factions due to her being a Saracen. In For Honor's lore the Wu Lin are the enemy that the Chosen(samurai) were recovering from fighting hence why they had the lowest population in the story and hero lore trailers.

For FH or other slashers? In the case of other slashers all attacks and combos are fairly easy to read/block. You are mainly trying to bait your opponent into making a mistake and give you an opening. There is some tech you can use like drags/accels to go faster/slower but IMO that is not really intended.

Again, not really. Both are fairly badly placed into the world/lore. Why the fuck is a gladiator on the battlefield and running around basically naked? Why is a heavily outdated field officer who doesn't even have a shield fighting on the front lines? Neither of them really make sense other than being Latin, which the knight faction takes influence from (kind of).

No, CC is typically used to mitigate and manage enemies in XvX situations whereas hence why it's called Crowd Control in For Honor pin moves are easily interupted and aren't meant to be used as such unless you have the numerical advantage in a team fight thus ganking tool or its a 1v1 and in that instance its no different to a bash. Actual crowd control is only present in the form of feats

It still is a mind game, the point of unblockables is to force the opponent to make reads as opposed to just plain reacting to things. This is also true of most fighting games where defense is about reading and predicting rather than just raw reaction times.

This is the same general premise behind unblockables and 50/50s in For Honor then in that they serve as ways of forcing reactions from your opponent, drags/accels should be intended because they give you another viable form of offense if they weren't then that would beg the question of how the devs intended for general 1v1s to not just be turtle fests if everything is reactable.

Do the human benchmark test, also what's your monitor's refresh rate?

Ideally you want a reaction time of 200ms(which is the average reaction time of people in their 20s anyway) so you can block lights, don't worry if you can't react to everything you can still try to predict them.

As for your teammates? probably because they have a low elo and it's freeplay weekend so you're up against people that haven't played for a long while but still have a better idea of what they're doing.

They are pretty fast, probably below 500ms not including the small windup window. You can counter them by kicking back (works the same way as when two people gb eachother) and to put it in FH terms, are able to break full blocks and give you a free hit (also like gb). They don't displace the target or drain stamina IIRC.

That is kind of my issue with FH, it went from a melee slasher to a pseudo fighting game with lots of CC. Slashers are more of a back and forth and trying to bait your opponent into making a mistake where as FH is more about spamming CC/I-frame moves until you win.

Mordhau and Chiv had this problem, and the way around it was a stamina bar and disarming, as well as speeding up the combat slightly. M&B has super fast combat in comparison to both as well as a harder melee system to master. Turtling in FH was a massive issue way beck when when attacks were far slower IIRC.

They didn't though. Gothic architecture comes from the merging of Germanic and Roman architecture, who already used keystones and arches quite a significant amount.

its not unless a new hero comes out which is usually broken for a few weeks before they get nerfed to the ground. anything you can buy with money you can buy with steel (in game currency) and it doesnt take long at all to save up for anything. all armour and weapon variations are free but locked behind reps on characters

It's actually closest in mechanics to a traditional fighting game like SF or MK

it's got pretty great fashion for your cool fella

the balance is done by an actual 400 pound whale who doesn't play the game so don't be surprised when you eventually realize "wow that's completely unfair and not balanced at all"

As you've probably seen in this general, people tend to both love and hate the game. It's an utterly unique multiplayer experience, essentially a very basic 4v4 fighting game that's made possible with the three-directional combat system and souls-type lock on. There are a million and one things wrong with the game (although, credit, it's improved significantly since release), but people who enjoy the core combat--despite shitting on the game constantly--have nowhere else to go, as this game is literally the only one in its genre. It does look and feel great, animation/effects-wise which helps.

As far as pay-to-win goes, despite being made by Ubisoft, the makers of the notoriously grindy Rainbow Six Seige, For Honor has basically escaped that kind of grind. Depending on the version of the game you buy, you may start with a very small roster of heroes, but the heroes themselves come with all the bells and whistles of their movesets. Besides purchasing heroes, the only other gameplay-affecting "meta" items are gear, which drops randomly and often. You'll have to put a solid amount of play sessions into a character in order to level them up enough to get their highest-level gear, but once you're there, you're there. There's no additional grinding, and "item level" hasn't been raised ever. The gear treadmill isn't a thing in this game; you just level up your character and then save gear with the perks you want. Before a week ago I would have said not worth it, since PS4 had a lot of trouble running the game at a reasonable framerate. However, just last week, a "performance mode" dropped (that you will absolutely need to enable for multiplayer) that at least gets you up to 30fps, which should at least make the game playable. Still, I'm gonna be real here: 30fps on wifi means you're going to have a tough time parrying some of the faster attacks, while some people you encounter will be able to do it every time. If that sounds like incredible bullshit to you, it is, and I just wanna set expectations before you buy this. You should still be able to play the game normally, and the matchmaking should pretty quickly put you in lobbies where you're not versus those people, but they're gonna be out there and they will absolutely have a noticeable advantage over you.

Learn to block 400ms lights, when they go for the in chain bas empty dodge because they might follow up with the zone in which case go for a GB if you're quick enough, if you think they're gonna go for the bash finisher dodge again for a free GB. You aren't getting the timing right, but you're generally supposed to feint to neutral than parry dodge attacks anyway. GBing a dodge attack is difficult because the GB vulnerability is so short and also depends on other factors like hit/block stun, attack startup of the feintable attack etc.

Hmmmm you can circumvent needing good reaction speed, but playing a character who has lots of agency for getting out of neutral safely and quickly. I would recommend someone with a neutral bash, neutral hyperarmor, or both if possible. So Warlord. Also having dodge attacks and full blocks is great for option selecting certain moves.

The inputs are too fucked up. Dodge forward heavy works but not dodge sideways heavy, you have to input light for that to work. Anything involving full block stance is just alien to me. Highlander is the big Scottish muscleman who wields a claymore that's as tall as he is

Keep in mind he is currently the worst character in the game. There's really only one other character who comparable to him in terms of shear weakness and low-performance. There are currently certain matchups for him where you would need to be 5x better than your opponent at the game just to have a somehwhat "even" duel.

He's been mediocre / terrible for about 6 years now

BUT
they announced a big rework for him like 2 days ago
if all the stuff in his rework actually gets added then he'll become a very solid and dependable character with options for some of his worst matchups
in the right hands he'd become almost overpowered

Cons:
- Impale remove from heavy parry: Bad nerf and garbage justification. From patch note: "Impaling Riposte is now only guaranteed after Light Parries (as its damage potential was too high off Heavy Parries)". If that is the case, then Warmonger's Bleed Impale into wall (30 damage) and Afeera's Left Heavy follow-up from her neutral Bash near wall into top heavy (43 damage) (which she can do after a heavy parry) should be nerfed too. Why do LB have to get the short end of the stick? The reason Impale was OP before because it confirmed top heavy which blinds and drain stam. Now that those are gone, why make it available from light parry? Only retards agree with this change.
- All new combo chains from 1st TG removed: They didn't add any new chains at all, LB plays the same from before. Boring. At least give him L-L-H and H-L-L chains.
- No roll catcher: The same issue with Conq rework, opponents can roll away and you can't do nothing about it.
Now for unintended change: Blind Justice (top heavy after light parry) now confirms chain bash into side light which deals 38 damage!
Overall, not even a rework, just a bunch of QoLs and buffs that LB should have got long ago.

They buffed lawbringer, which is nice. However, they removed his stamina drain, and stamina stun attacks which is lame. I like stamina punishing in this game, but they keep removing it slowly. They also removed his top heavy daze on hit, which is also lame.

I find these two mechanics fun, but I guess if it's not hyperarmor bashes with damage resistance being reseted, or a 2 second pin, you can't have it.

They also made ledging way harder, which was also really fun. They're slowly trying to remove all of the fun mechanics, because sweats on the subreddit whine about it.

I think the skeleton crew has made some really retarded design moves, but at least the game is decent m, because sometimes they're not dumb. They just hate fun, 'random' mechanics. This game will never be a good esport, despite them trying, death to ranked players.

Very floaty combat. Slow movement (aside from "dashes" which are on a cooldown). Big, slow, Chivalry/Mordhau style weapon swings. Hitboxes seem wonky, you're going to get hit when you don't think you're in range, and you're going to miss people despite your weapon phasing through them. I can't speak much to balance, since I've only played for one afternoon, but each player getting one "ultimate" per match that you can save up just seems wonky to me. The ultimate forms are like For Honor T4s on crack and it just seems like a weird balancing choice to put one of those in everybody's back pocket that they can save for the most busted time to use it. Very swingy. And the game itself is very swingy in general, due to the imprecise combat, large team sizes, and crazy map features. I cannot fathom anyone taking it seriously--even as seriously as For Honor, which is itself pretty laughable as a competitive game--but as a party game to hop on for a couple hours with some buddies it could be all right.

That being said, the team-based stuff is fun. You can revive downed team mates and there's actual class roles (including an actual healer). It 100% feels and plays like a budget, F2P game but, hey, it literally is a budget F2P game so I guess that's okay. The store currently has no non-cosmetic microtransactions but we will see. I can see myself playing it on occasion, although the second anything but a costume or an emote appears in the game shop I'm gone, and Nexxon certainly has a reputation for loving microtransactions.
