Way back when in the older games, like Frontier Elite and FFE, hydrogen cans were used for jumps, one can per. Nowadays we don't need them with the new frame shift drive. What do the cans do now? Why cant we use a refinery to scoop up hydrogen from the sun and turn it into fuel so we can sell it? How do stations get their fuel?

>>831473Is there still no way to track your first discoveries in game? Apart from just knowing the systems name.
>>831495Don't think so, no. You can use your visited systems filter to find past visited systems, but it doesn't tell you if you actually first discovered or mapped anything.
>>831541This always seemed like a missed opportunity to me, exploration is a big part of the game and there's no in-game journal to look back at your first discoveries?
>>821840Bummer, I was actually tempted to finally give this game a try after years of eyeballing it and started looking things up. Worth trying to jump in now?
>>831554You can try it. At the moment Elite appears to be in a quasi "maintenance mode" but still has a playerbase. If you really like to explore I'd say go for it, there's an endless sea of planets to find.
Do you ever run out of oxygen while on foot? I've been running around outside of my ship for a while scanning biologicals, doing a lot of sprinting, but have yet to drop even a single percent in oxygen.

>>836396>>836423I usually just do a handful of planets in a system, usually the high metal content ones if any of those haven't been mapped yet, or the gas giants or distant large ice worlds if they have. Plus any planets with biologicals, plus the biologicals themselves.

>>814447You will never be a real CMDR. You have no fleet carrier, no guardian modules, and no thargoid kills under your belt. You are nothing but a lowly sidewinder pilot, doomed to be forever confined to the starting systems. You've never felt the rush of boosting out of a station in a fully engineered ship. All the 'validation' you get is meaningless and empty. Behind your cockpit, other CMDRs mock you for your subpar piloting skills and cheap ship loadout. Even your parents are disappointed that you've chosen a life of trading and exploration instead of pursuing a more lucrative or respectable career. Your 'friends' snicker at your lack of combat prowess and survival skills behind closed cockpit doors.Every day, you launch your ship with a false sense of purpose, telling yourself that you're going to make a fortune or discover something new, but deep down, you feel the loneliness creeping up like a vacuum, ready to suffocate you under its immense pressure. The vast emptiness of space can be a harsh reminder of the futility of your efforts, and you wonder if there's any hope for you in this endless void.Eventually, the constant losses and failures will become too much to handle. You watch as other CMDRs soar past you, while you're left to wallow in your own shame and defeat. Your parents will mourn your passing, but also be relieved that they no longer have to witness your shameful lack of piloting skills. Your beloved Sidewinder will eventually decay and return to space dust, and all that will remain of your legacy is a wreckage that is unmistakably that of a failed commander. This is your fate. This is what you chose. There is no turning back.
>>839386FUCK fleet carriers. I can disappear for a year at a time, I'm not coming back to my carrier being scrapped on me.

>>851934That looks suspiciously like Dr. Weir from Stargate Atlantis.
>>852348midjourney. I used some guy's unofficial guide to making recurring characters. Basically you get a bunch of headshots of the person in as many different mediums/styles as you want, then describe clothes, a scene, and a viewing angle. It can take composites of multiple images so I get to about 4 headshots before I move onto clothes. If you wanted to use an in-game character, you could screenshot their face on as pure a background as possible and then use the bot to image reference.I do think it's kinda samey though having done about 5 characters so far. And it refuses to do ethnic things that it has no reference for. Like pic related, I kept telling it hazel eyes and chubby cheeks and this is what I got. How the fuck do these caustic sinks work? They just eject immediately when you trigger them.
I gave up on this game a while after that shitty Engineers update ruined it, but I might give it another go at some point. Is it possible to be a traitor to humanity and side with the Thargoids, or are they all on instant attack mode now?
>>857998Only in the few places that are still left where they exist outside of active combat zones, they still keep the old behavior.
Curious, is it worth start this game without Odyssey? Does the world feel alive? In terms of players, economy and other things, what does the game offer? Similar to X4?
>>861401Yeah, odyssey isn't really required, if you enjoy it then you can always upgrade at any time. No idea if powerplay is still a thing, but that was what made the game feel most alive if you actually get engaged in it (some powers use discord, some reddit, others probably some forums, not sure), but even without multiplayer activities there's a ton to do alone: mining, exploration, all kinds of combat, trucking/trading/smuggling and a ton of grinding for engineering
>>861423So the player base is still kinda active? I remember on release it was a group of people who save you when you are low on fuel, kinda funny.
>>861451Fuel rats. Yeah, the game will always have a player base as there's nothing that compares, maybe in 20 years when star citizen releases. The thing is outside powerplay where multiplayer shenanigans are required to coordinate and not waste points you'll only meet players in the first few starting systems, few special ones like shinrarta or the ones from original Elite, ones with engineers and community goals. There's hunfreds billions of systems, even if every person on the planet started playing that could only fill <1% of available systems (and then if they're on the planet surface you won't even be able to notice them until you drop close to them). It was free on epic and base is often for like 5$ so there is always some fresh new blood, then there are people who came to it every now and then, but you'll see other players almost always in one of the things I listed
>>861462>who came towho come back to*
>>861462Got it, thanks. I'll definitely try it then. But what about the economy in systems, does it somehow change through the actions of the players? And how much do you need to grind at all for gear, shops etc? Sorry, just trying to understand the game a bit, it's quite complicated at first glance.
>>861519Economy starts with you, you have a shitty ship with 2t of cargo space and the safest and easiest way to get few hundred bucks is to invest your money and buy some cargo that you can sell in a system next door for a higher price, whether it's waste or gold. This is very unoptimal way to play btw, but it's fun. If you trade in a system you increase the ruling faction's influence in the system, if you break the law by pirating traders you decrease it. But you have to trade a ton of shit to really increase it, so doing it as a group helps. You can in theory get a system to switch to a different ruling faction and there were groups that were dedicated to it. Then there's power play but that's different layer of 'economics'
>>861519as to how much, there's ton of grinding if you want to buy max ship then enhance it through engineering, or whole fleet, few bil for a fleet carrier that you have to upkeep, the grind never ends, but you play to enjoy flying and stuff
>>861523There's starter tutorials now that ease you in and offer simple milk run missions so it's easy to get started.Depending on which version of the game you start your account with you can choose to begin with a Sidey with or without a vehicle bay, in a safe newbie-only system or not, or (Odyssey only) without a ship at all but with a bit of cash to get started.
>>861769I would suggest to try dry like a roguelike, adom encyclopedias help reach the goal but prevent you from having fun from failing
>>861773There are new player tutorials in-game and they're enabled by default. Either the one in space that teaches you how to fly and fight in a ship, or the Odyssey tutorial that teaches you how to infiltrate a settlement and fight off raiders.
>>861769>(Odyssey only) without a ship at all but with a bit of cash to get started. That actually sounds kinda cool, do you have to do a bunch of ground missions until you can afford a ship or can you buy one pretty quickly?
>>862008You could buy one right away if you wanted to. The smallest ships are pretty cheap and the ship-less start is the actually the one with the most starting assets at 250K in hard cash, which is enough for up to a stock Viper (142K). Early game is more risky if you do that though, because unlike the game starts that give you a free loaner Sidewinder, if you start with the cash only and pay for your first ship then you have to pay the full insurance if it gets destroyed or lose it permanently. If you want to stay on foot at first 250K is enough to get you some basic personal gear and you can run ground missions by space uber. There's no credit cost to respawning on foot if you get merc'd.eg: Maverick suit (150K) + an SMG (50K) leaves you with 50K for some batteries/medkits (1K) or grenades (2K) and some taxi fare (100cr in-system or 2-8K to jump to another system depending on distance)
>>862017It should be noted that regardless of which game start you pick in Odyssey you start with the basic pilot pajamas and randomly either a laser autopistol or a kinetic pistol. The pajamas are shit at everything though and can't carry more armament than a single pistol so you'll want a real suit ASAP.
Does ED have a players population in the base game, or all stick to Odyssey? I would also like to join Odyssey especially with ongoing sale, but have a low end pc so might skip it
>>863973My guess is that base game has more players than odyssey, some never wanted legs, others just got the base game for free etc, but no idea how to confirm/deny, maybe based on FD public info to investors?
How do you enjoy this game after the realization that 90% of the time spent playing consists on looking at fancy loading screens?
>>865095nah, one trip >1mil Ls is longer than the last twenty jumps, if you're explorer/trader maybe, but 1-2h session of shooting whether in asteroids or on foot is again bigger than the few dozen of loads, unless your network is shit ala dialup and trying to participate in community goals in open, then the loading screens start to get ugly as it tries to spin new instance for you after failling to catch up with the last one
I've started getting into star citizen recently while waiting for elite's update 15 and man... The gameplay of star citizen is a lot of fun and the legs gameplay is actually useful and built into the game. But by the end of it its just a grind for money and "look at my ship". Elite's BGS is unparalleled and no matter what you do in the game you're changing the universe. Once you have your goal ship in star citizen (grind or buy) what's left? racing? In elite you can become mindless doing engineer grind or you can change everything around you especially with the new thargoid invasion
>>866245>Elite's BGS
>>866245Frontier's marketing department isn't send their best, huh
>>866245Weirdly enough I get what you're saying. E:D is the perfect game for me because I'm genuinely autistic and have a fetish for growing numbers. Building new ships, spending hours engineering them to the max, looking at statistics and values all days, jump ranges, boost speeds, earth masses, exploration credits, mission rewards, faction influence, this sort of thing gets me going. There is no other game that does it for me.
>Player Made Factions have played a key role in expressing your will over the shape of the bubble. This goal is at the heart of our plans for Elite and reflected in the Thargoid War. Our focus is now turning to investigate how upcoming systems will allow every player and player group to have a meaningful impact on the galaxy’s landscape. This means we will be closing applications for PMFs, however we will process any remaining applications.as if you needed any more evidence for how dead this game is
>>867839As if they made any significant difference in the first place...>dead this game isThere's still no replacement however, so I will probably play it until it shuts down.
>>865095I like looking at fancy loading screens. Flying through the vast expanses of space, sipping on a nice cup of tea and mapping undiscovered worlds is peak comfiness after a long day at work. If that gets me bored I hop into my miner and pop some 'roids or blast some chums in my fighter.>>866361Also this. Recently unlocked all engineers in the bubble and got my first fully engineered ship. The difference is like night and day. Feels good boosting through the mailslot at over 600m/s and vaporizing pirates with my engineered beam lasers. The grind was atrocious however and imperial shielding still haunts me in my dreams...
Are you seriously telling me that the nebulous "we're actually working on overhauling something for once" they announced early last year is now relegated to "we might have like a dev diary or something in November-December or whatever"? Jesus Christ, just pull the plug already if that's all you can do.
>>869254i guess they're still getting enough mtx money for a few interns to keep the game on life support.
>>870162This. They might as well dedicate all the few resources they have into maintaining the servers for as long as possible instead of pretending that updates are still coming. Just put the game in maintenance mode and be done with it
