in addition to that, they have a policy which lets employees choose on which projects they work on, which ends up with a lot of developers moving to the currently trendy projects

I used to be in the "why valve why" camp but the game doesnt really need it and the way most multiplayer games are today (with sbmm/eomm and all that weird censorship) its a fucking blessing they only lightly touched on shit that wouldnt fly in modern games like custom sprays or anything goes in chat uncensored, but you can at least still turn off/on that stuff. hell the fact that you can text chat with the enemy team by default is great since that isnt even an option in most games.
probably the only thing about the current state of the game that makes me wish for change is the fucking puritans that run community server networks and share ban lists with eachother, getting banned from skial in 2013 for harassing an admins internet girflfriend with schadenfreude didnt start to sting until a year or so back when that network became one of the last vanilla options with the only others having me banned for "imported from partner banlist"
if the bots were a non-issue this wouldnt be nearly as much of a problem though, and furthermore thats just the shitty community and not really something valve can fix

looking to get into tf2. what advice have ye to offer?

Play the tutorial, it's pretty shitty but its relatively short and teaches you basic stuff.
Casual mode is currently being infested by fully automatic aimbots, called just bots for short (not to be confused for the bots built into the game, which are shitty AI players in practice mode). You just have to put up with the bots (make sure to vote yes when someone starts a votekick) or you can just try to find a community server, but they usually have much more experienced players compared to the average Casual lobby.
Don't use crafting, it's a waste of drops. If your account is premium you can just trade with weapon bots (such as on scrap.tf (that site is run by groomers btw)) to get the unlocks you want, but stock weapons are good enough on pretty much every class. The exceptions I can think of is Medic's crossbow primary which is superior compared to every other since it heals, or Heavy's lunchbox unlocks since the shotgun is useless on Heavy.

This is mostly true but missing a key nuance. They don't work on the new trendy stuff because its new and trendy so to say, but rather because if they exercise their "freedom" to work on "whatever they want" they'll be magically out of a job. Out of over 300 employees there are plenty of employees that would love to work on Tf2 as a little pet project, they know what will happen if any significant amount of time is spent there.

Don't use casual matchmaking if you can avoid it.
Use the server browser to look for games that you think you would enjoy.

Learning how to do a basic rocket jump will instantly put you a step above the average player.
