>I'm new to the game, what should I do when I join?
I'd suggest heading to any established settlement, with RimTown being the closest in proximity to spawn. Many of the players are cordial and will help you out, whether that be with gameplay advice or philanthropy. If you feel like you'd enjoy more of a solo experience, the handbook (hotkey "H") is your best friend. It isn't particularly a game-changer, but I'd recommend avoiding winters (hotkey "C" to see the ingame date); spring is the most optimal and forgiving season for new players as most crops will grow in this climate and you'd theoretically have enough time to prepare for winter. However, heading south will negate winters entirely. Sub-zero temperatures cease at around 10,000-15,000 blocks south, so you won't have to worry about freezing or the death of most of your crops. The easiest way to reach southern climates is to use the TL network of which terminates at around 50,000 blocks south - follow the South path from RimTown to (-180, 564) to get to the first station.
Don't be too discouraged if you find yourself struggling to survive at first - this game definitely isn't forgiving to firstcomers, however the multiplayer setting aids this exponentially.

The cabin you spawn in has been outfitted with some basic amenities to help you get started. As well as some tools that have been donated by various players if you're inclined to take some. Feel free to spend the night there, or take some of the items from the chests on the ground floor by the window to help you get started.

>What if I want to strike it out on my own with no help?
No problem, just leave the cabin unmolested and explore the wilderness outside the door. There is a road that leads to some various settlements/bases if that interests you. As well as a system of multiple translocators that are labeled to get a fresh start far away.

>Why should I play on FrenZone?
We have more mods that include QoL upgrades and additional content. It's currently Spring. Our host service is more stable than Dove's server so there's no lag or rollbacks. If you get put off by a server that has a lot of history that you can't relate to or would rather make your claim on a newer server then FrenZone is what you want.

>Why shouldn't I play on FrenZone?
We have a lower player count, but we're going to be branching out the next week or two to get some more people interested. We have a small dedicated player base, but irl has a lot of us busy.

Cat Eyes is good if you aren't trying to do any aesthetic building, you can see extremely far at night and in caves but the color fluctuation is really fucked for making sure you got the right tint of wood or stone you want.

The temperatures were pretty mild in early spring when I moved into the area, and although there's no snow, it still does get to 10 or 5 in the winter, which is pretty fucking cold considering it doesn't get close to that shit in Florida were I am, nor do our hot ass year round summer hit the 40s often. Are the temperatures just fucked in this game, or is Tyron so autistic he accounted for the continental weather on a world with no oceans? I modified Better Drifters to make them drop their normal drops as item entities when killed, and it's so much better than having to harvest them with a knife, shift-click out each drop, close the mob-drop inventory, and repeat.
With the seconds-per-day, I think those actions can be skipped.
It's much, much less involved than butchering an animal.
With the speedup from Better Drifters, the time taken isn't even as important to me as the CLICKING needed.
I would like to make it a separate mod, but I don't know how to make sure a mod loads later than another mod.
(Would also need another mod for temporal essence if you do/don't have Temporal Tinkerer, as I do.)

Games need to get onboard with having instanced gathering zones that you can easily travel to so you can gather and area and come back relatively easily.

with Xskills resin is easy as fuck to farm, just plant a pine forest and get the resin farmer perk. They drop their seeds at a very high rate and you can plant them right next to each other in solid rows or blocks so you can chop down huge chunks at once. I usually plant 100 pine trees at once and get between 20 and 30 resin for it each time.

That would kill the single player experience I feel. Prospecting is still good for iron and general rock knowledge is good for salt, lead, malachite, and some other shit. The auction house update will definitely be good for trading though. Especially with xskills people with specialties can trade without worrying as much about distance (though shipment timer is still a thing as is tax). The old world did pretty good with resources at the start. Most people stayed within the 5k block radius of spawntown and the infrastructure developed later allowed for some easy resource gathering and transportation to middul, sneed, souf, and norf. We need a new hermes initiative to improve the new world infrastructure and maybe a nu norf or some town within walking distance but also a moderate tl distance to spawn. These are just some ideas but the four densely populated towns and one general area were some neat draws and none were unmanageable to get to with infrastructure. God now I just want a boat or steam update (trains or minecarts). The booze and trading update will definitely bring oldfags back for tavern shenanigans.

Been working on the castle with some guys and the town. You can see some of the castle in the background. The siege will be next weekend attackers vs defenders. Depending on attendance will change how much pve will be involved but we should have enough people for straight pvp.
It'll be a mix of copper and bronze age gear. Attackers start in a camp and can deploy barricades, use torches to burn stuff, ladders, and bombs along with slightly better weapons.
Defenders get to use wolf traps, beenades, and slightly better armor/more healing.
There will be a short chef service before the battle and food. Any loot the attackers pillage can be kept. Anything the defenders still have by the end they keep.
The first attacker goal is to burn down the village and destroy the church. The second goal is to steal a treasure from the castle and capture its flag. All shit in that area goes to attackers if they get both goals complete. Still working out how to calculate the scores (points per kill, special item defended/looted, and objectives) which will effect a payout.
We're still working out times so say what times would work best for you and if it should be friday, saturday, or sunday.

Xskills runs in the background, as you dig dirt or smith stuff or kill animals or simply live for a while without dying you earn xp to level up. Then from the xskills menu which is accessed with a bound hotkey you can select perks. Some perks require higher levels to unlock and some have exclusivity with other perks.

In order to change class you need someone with admin abilities to run a console command. Specifically, "/player yourname allowcharselonce" to allow the player to select their class once again. Fortunately when changing the class of your character xskills does not also reset.

The player also needs to use the command .charsel once the above command is done. Then the char generator screen will show up. Here is the thread that goes over this.

/vm/ has more players, slightly less mods, older server. Rimtown is comfy but a lot of people split off long ass directions, some semi-regular events. Don't know if they fixed the lag/rollback issues yet though.
Frenzone has less players, bit more mods, newer, and a central church that's basically packed full of resources if you don't want to survive on your own if sol ever comes online to whitelist you for it. He's probably in the thread somewhere.

as an idea, you could have everyone suited in gambeson with a bunch of spears (for throwing) and some archers with just one commander on each side with bronze armor

also want to have the town next to the hill which the castle would be built on
battlements should also be 2x2 to provide any level of bow protection
i also dont know what could be really used for this but on wooden palisades they tended to have some type of mortar or something covering the wood which prevented fires, which meant the only way people could set fire to these towns was by starting a bonfire or tossing a torch into hay roofing
also give us a small limit on bombs so we dont just breech every wall we encounter

I did make palisades. Right now the town is designed to be burnt and the castle blown up. I was thinking about kits and i'll show some in the next post. Me and varadox were testing the effectiveness of them and how xskills plays into it for balanced kits.There are battlements and in pic rel I have some chiseled some arrow slits that block about 50% of arrows depending on the player's accuracy and blocks almost all spears. The castle has 3 gates. You breach them then have to climb to the top of the center tower to capture some prize. Pic is castle now at night.
Both sides have special music classes (different instruments) and a special class (beenade expert vs siege expert). Defenders get more ranged weapons and some chests on towers with ranged supplies. Attackers get more healing. Also some kits are slightly different in gear. I'm really tempted to add togglable wolf traps.

We did some pvp testing and if it's copper age vs bronze swords it's pretty decent. Anything past copper armor is broken. It took varadox 25 seconds to bring me down in the tank kit to near death and you need to take the armor off to heal with plate so it's weak to poke dmg. Mostly for choke points since it's slow and easier to poke in the open (battle has a town, field, then castle for the battleground).

When you first join a server you can customize your character and pick a class. Ask a janny for .charsel if you already did that. Then you can trade with traders for clothing, find clothing in dungeons, or ask a tailor class to craft you some clothing. Also armor can be aesthetic

The sediment at the bottom will not hurt the aging mead if shaken a bit while moving. It won't harm the brew. When you go to bottle it, moving it from its secondary container your siphon will exclude the sediment in the transfer anyway. Aging should also be done when bottled ideally. Features depends on what you count as a feature. It has less blocks and mobs but it has multiblock chiseling so more block combos. It doesn't have redstone but it has wind power and plans for shit to reach steampunk with conveyor belts. The game is younger obv.
Function also depends. We have larpy/fun stuff like dodge rock arenas, pvp arenas, pve arenas, forts if you decide to go to war though the serer is more about co op and trade, because of wildfires a kiln is pretty useful, a forge, farm, bee area, ranch, we have archives, inns and taverns are generally used since the game is really tough so in the old world new players used taverns to survive winter (now they squat in abandoned homes).
For tism, the most we have are auto basalt and obsidian farms, helve hammers, tism mills, pounders, steel furnaces, charcoal pits, ovens/specialty cooking areas, brewing in the next update, idk it's just like tfc mixed with minecraft.

There are traders but you can't populate builds with them outside of creative. There are plenty of wild animals and then there are drifters, locusts, and bells and shit. Most builds are populated by players working together. Souf, rimtown, and nunorf or longsword are the only still populated areas in vm. It's mostly for co-op, trade, and we do events like the castle siege this weekend or like some old server cult with some real lore which is neat. Actually reminds me of the toycadet trial, probably the most interesting natural event in the server where some player had a trial based on an attempted assassination of a town leader (rip the 30+ player count days) Hopefully the trade and brewing update brings the oldfags back

The npcs and mobs are pretty barebones yet. Very simplistic ai in the mobs case, no real ai in the npcs as they never leave their trader wagons. Combat is also pretty basic yet, as the dev is going to do a dedicated update in the future to cleaning it up and making it better.

I need some suggestions though. I'm trying to preserve beautiful landmarks (such as the lake in >>454596 I build around). I'm at this area. Should I tunnel through the bluffs then do a low level bridge, make a giant and tall bridge from the top of the bluffs to the bluffs 100-200 blocks across the lake, or do a path around, going down the ridge in the pic?

Would a grand bridge across be best (I have a ton of granite to work with) or maybe a path around? The bridge would be expensive and could look nice or ruin the vastness of this lake. Yellow is a more smooth route and goes through a forest (travelers could get forage) but obviously wolves are a risk. Red goes through some hills. It's a bit harder to build but about the same as the forest path. Blue would be a very smooth one that ignores most of the lake.

The game is a lot more like the terrafirmacraft mod than minecraft.
The devs are active and talk to the community and constantly pump out updates.
The main points in this are realism in world and a lot more grindy. With multiblock chiseling and the in game décor it has a stronger focus on small and purposeful builds over mega structures. The only things minecraft has over this i'd say are redstone mechanics/mega farms and noteblocks though the music mod in both servers is better than noteblocks and works like the starbound music.

Okay so not stupid. The left is sort of where we could put a balcony for some fancy small tavern and from there you'd have enough space for a good, large factory going deeper into the mountian while still leaving a ton of space for other builds. Main issue is how we connect it to the hall. I'd say a staircase to the brewing area from your home then a spiral in the corner of the brewing area to the balcony bar. The right shows where the kitchen bridge will go.

We used the castle as an arena, played dodgerock, and eventually had an actual (small scale) siege.
