How to play DLC maps for free and the entire thing as cheap as possible:
If you have ark on steam just install it, if not go to g2a, epicnpc or whatever shit google brings to you and buy a 3-4 bucks steam acc with ark, yeah they work, some of us play with them.
Download this

Extract somewhere, open and let it update itself
Point the launcher to "ARK" folder
To find this folder, right click on game on steam, properties, local files, browse
Go to DLCs on the launcher and just click install extinction or watever, let it end and close it
Go to your steam folder again and navigate here
ARK\Engine\Binaries\ThirdParty\Steamworks\Steamv132\Win64
Download this

And dats it, you can play the DLCs now, launch game with the second option, the one without battleye and join the server
If something isn't working, you are the issue, redo it.
Note for retards: sub to the mods on steam not launcher, whenever game updates you update dlcs with the launcher too, google how to use family sharing to play ark from your main acc using one of this shitty 3-4 bucks ones to avoid the burden of switching accs to play ark.

You could try Darkwood. It's more focused on exploration/hopeless style survival. As in: you pretty much never become a god, the world is always quite dangerous. Upgrading shit isn't really the main focus of them game, it happens a lot more slowly.

Just so you know, you can usually get a replicator from the rec crate from HLN-A, which lets you turn the shards from the red crystals into real element.
You can get lots of black pearls and shards from inside the volcano once you can fight your way in

Over this map, at 1080p, using ultra and having the same GPU as chaser and a bit better CPU with some OC I never get under 100fps
So either your hardware is broken or you have some miner stealing your GPU gains
HDD and server have nothing to do with framerate.
Yet, if you use a HDD instead of a SSD in some games you can get the "choppy" experience.

- No longer blocks respawn of resources & dinos
- Range display now accurately represents the area that a dino will be fed in (note: this is now cubic instead of spherical)
- New Configs: FeedingTroughMaxRangeInFoundations & TekFeedingTroughMaxRangeInFoundations (the limit that the trough can be set to ingame)
(note: the previous feeding trough configs now function as a default range if none is set by the player)

- New Structure: S+ Spawn Blocker (an improved version of how the feeding trough used to block spawns, can adjust size ingame)

It's been some time since I've played, and the latest thing to come out back then was Ragnarok, but the desert hadn't been implemented yet. I never played aberration, never fought any of the bosses, and only really dipped my toes into scorched earth. Most of my time was spent on the island and the center, where my buds and I spent all our time (probably 2 or more weeks of regular play on our private server) with boosted rates doing metal runs, which we were eventually able to use to get to the industrial age. We kind of stagnated there though; we were preparing to go caving, but the resource requirements for bullets, good armor, and setting up industry was kind of a slog, and we all quit.

I'm thinking about getting back into it a bit, but some general tips and tricks to try and speed it up would be nice. About the most complicated thing we did was use a quetz and anky to go on metal and obsidian runs, and a little bit of wiring. I watched some OneWing videos on boats, and that seemed neat, but our base was some newfag shit and I guarantee it was not efficient in the least.
What's the general path you take from being a lvl1 beach bob to a lvl100 dinofucker?

What dinos do you prioritize, which are a waste, how do you usually build a base that serves an actual function (i.e. defenses, crops, power layout), what are some key locations or things to do to speed up the progression, what's the fastest way to level, what are some basic time-wasting noob traps to avoid, etc etc.

Honestly, kinda, I'm mostly just interested in the collective autistic knowledge gained from years of playing this game, and how I'd been doing it wrong all those years ago. Also some discussion and sharing of stories would be neat as we back-and-forth.

Taming only really starts once you hit level 21 and unlock the tranq arrow. It's pretty easy to hit that level just doing beach things like making clothes, and killing dodos, although if you feel like it you can slingshot a dilo or two first before then.
Dilos aren't really cool or strong, but their spit attack will slow anything, from a dodo to a rex, so they can be helpful when you try to run away, or even just as a distraction. They're a nice thing to tame when you have nothing yet, but don't get too attached.
Once you have tranq arrows, what you tame first really depends on what you can find nearby you at the time. The really stellar early game tames are these though:
The trike is great for berry gathering, which is very nice for making more narcotics for future tames. It's not the best, but really, it's plenty good enough for a mortar and pestle to make narcotics. If you have a trike, your bottleneck will probably be spoiled meat, not berries.
They're also decent fighters. They're pretty slow, but they have ok stats for combat, and some pretty good knockback too. Giving them a nice advantage in fights that would otherwise go south for it real quick. A single trike with a saddle can handle packs of raptors by making use of its knockback.
On the other hand, raptors themselves are a great early tame too. Throw a bola at them to immobilize them, and then shoot a few tranqs and they're yours, so it's pretty simple to tame an entire pack with just bolas and a bow. They also get buffed while in a pack, and the strongest one in the pack becomes the pack leader, and gets much stronger. They're really great at patrolling the beaches and rivers safely, and their speed lets you bail if you ever need to.
Those two are without a doubt the best early game dinos you can get, as they're both effective and easy to tame.

The next great tame available is the stego. This guy can harvest wood and thatch really well now, and is an excellent berry gatherer too. They also have high health and good damage, outclassing the trike in all ways. They take quite a few more tranqs though, and can kill you if you let them get close enough.

The rest are kind of 'collect as you see/need them' aside from the ankylo for metal, and doed for stone, until more late game play. The three mentioned above are in my opinion the best dinos available at or near the starter areas


Rafts are very useful as a temporary base for when youre still putting yourself together and not sure where you want to build yet. They can hold as much as you can fit on them without any weight issues, just don't take them out to open sea.

My biggest tip for advancing quickly is to build near metal. It saves you a lot of time on travel, even with very efficient travel mounts, being close is the best.
Of course, most metal is in some of the more dangerous areas, so a temporary base near a small patch of metal also works, but you want to eventually move to where the metal is. Being in the more dangerous areas can also be helpful, as you're closer to what you want to eventually tame too.

Thanks for the write-up and I'm secretly hoping you do more, I recall most of this as familiar, only stegos back then were relegated for thatch and berry gathering like you said. I don't know if they got buffed recently (I'm using that term very loosely here) to be better at wood gathering, but we usually went and got mammoths and beavers instead for that. I seem to also remember stegos were the-go tanking animal for turret soaking, before trikes got the TLC pass that made their head shield reduce projectile damage (or maybe I'm misremembering and they always had that).

I do remember the golden age of rafts coming to an end with the addition of the giant dumb whale fish that doesn't even do its intended job iirc (wasn't it introduced so people would stop making massive interconnected ironclad waterworld raft bases at the world border, but it doesn't even aggro on unmanned boats?).

We were worried about building too close to metal, since we knew having foundations near it prevented it from respawning, so we kind of got overly cautious and built our base out of render distance of the metal.

So I've seen, PvP bases either being crammed 2x3 boxes hidden behind waterfalls or in crags, or massive sprawling skyscrapers surrounded by basketball hoops with turrets balanced around the rims. I'm probably leaning more towards the PvE side of things honestly, all we had in the way of housing were two big wooden boxes filled with storage containers and some electrical lighting. I think we had a greenhouse down by the beach, and a stone wall that surrounded the whole compound. By the way, when I say stone wall, I mean we went and placed fence foundations and stacked stone walls. Never once did it cross out minds to use stone gates, or wooden spike walls, because we were geniuses like that.

They did get a buff, and a pretty big one at that. They can move their plates on their back to swap between three 'modes' now. I might get some specifics wrong because I'm going off memory atm, but the modes are:
Heavy: Gathers thatch from trees, and small amounts of wood and berries. When it hits an enemy, the enemy gets a slowing debuff that stacks with continuous hits, and a single stego can slow even an alpha raptor down to a crawl now after a bit.
Armored: The default one, all wild stegos are in this mode. It's gathers lots of wood, a bit of thatch, and no berries. They take half normal damage from all sources.
Sharpened: Gathers lots of berries, not much else. Attacks become armor piercing.

Their new armored and heavy plates make them able to easily defend against wild rexes and other powerful creatures, making it great for base defense. But it is also slow, of course, so taking it very far without cryopods could be painful.
Speaking of cryopods, they're something that didn't exist before rag had a desert I believe. They're basically pokeballs, you can grab your tamed dino and release it later, which is very useful if you wanted to move a stego or other slow creature around a long distance. It's a mid-game item you can craft at the obelisks and supply drops.

I hated those things, they gave me a crippling fear of using rafts for the longest time. For the record, I think they do aggro unmanned rafts though.
I got patrolled hard after rafting into the snow biome to tame some stuff, got whale'd on the way out with my new yuty and daeodon on board. Scary as all hell to hear and see it coming at night.

That's a bit far lel, you can really get fairly close, I usually try to make myself at the nearest flat area to a metal patch and it works out most of the time.

Those became even more common with the addition of cryopods, since you didn't need to have an actual pen anymore unless you had breeding going on. Basketball hoop turret defenses were interesting to see the first time, definitely effective though, I guess, if a bit weird looking.

I made a base almost exactly like the picture once.
Only real difference was that the greenhouse wasn't actually a greenhouse and was just a normal building with plants in it. Walls went over to the ocean but not far in, and I would just walk around to leave, but wild dinos wouldn't see me to aggro though most of the time so it worked.
Screw going any deeper than the shore though, too many sharks for that. I only ever entered for oil and for very small amounts from the closest oil rocks at that.
Nowadays I tend to have everything connected, either as one big structure, or with passageways connecting the different structures.

The first step to this is to move over to a proper base location. As I mentioned earlier, building near metal is important, but you may want a temporary base first. If you want to start really getting into industry, you need to go ahead and move to a real base area if you aren't already.
The argent/quetz and anky is still a great way to move lots of metal/crystal/obsidian from the momuntain top (where most of those resources are) to your base.
Additionally, oil is important, but not hard to get a hold of from the snow biome (assuming the Island map.) Make sure you don't run out of gas though. Silica pearls are needed for electronics, but those can also be gathered from the icebergs or in underwater caves if you need a lot fairly simply, though you may want to tame a dolphin to reach the caves.
Cementing paste can be gathered by the hundreds from beaver dams, it helps a lot to learn where they are and have a fast mount to gather the paste from them when you need it. Cementing paste is light, so you don't need to worry much about weight. Make sure to throw out everything you don't want from the dam, so that a new one can respawn later with more stuff.
And finally, organic polymer can be obtained from penguins (varies from map to map,) and can be used for everything normal polymer can.
In other words, the two most important areas for resources are the snow biome, and the mountains. So if you want to really go full throttle into late-game, you should have your main base near or in those areas.
Anky for metal, obsidian, crystal, and oil.
Silica pearls and cementing paste by hand.
Club or chainsaw for organic polymer from penguins.
The argent is generally the best flier for reaching resources with an anky.
Stone walls are enough to keep out most things, and stone is used to craft paste if beavers aren't an option. If you need stone, you want to use a doed to gather it.

I make 6 stone furnaces if I'm really close to metal and can actually fill them all up more than once, but usually I just use 2 or 3 and let them go over time. Any metal it wasn't able to finish will be ready by the next day as long as it's fueled.
I typically tend towards using wood for fuel because it leaves charcoal behind, which is used for gunpowder, while sparkpowder just burns away into nothing. If I don't have a wood gathering dino available at the time though, I prefer sparkpowder.

I always build the industrial forge as soon as I can. Once you reach the level to unlock it, you should start working towards it. Being able to smelt massive amounts of metal at very little cost in a very short time is useful for all the reasons you'd expect. The chemistry bench is a great building too. It crafts things more efficiently than a normal mortar and pestle, so you get 1.5x what you'd get if you used a mortar and pestle.
The grill and cooker are more afterthoughts that you can worry about when you have the stuff to spare.

Crafting rafts (level 16) provides a lot of experience and can throw you up quite a few levels pretty quickly.
Crafting stone structures for a base after that is good after.
Beyond that, killing an alpha dino gives a LOT of experience, and alpha raptors can be killed with ease with a high level stego, even alpha carnos can be killed with a good stego. Avoid alpha rexes though, they aren't worth it unless you know you can win.
Generally, building structures gives a lot of exp, so if you need to level up and you aren't sure what to do, expanding your base or building a new/secondary base with the highest tier structure available is always a good option.
Also, narcotics and sparkpowder. Once you have the right tames, you can craft hundreds of those at a time, and if you only have one mortar and pestle, it takes a while, so it gives you passive xp as it crafts and you do other stuff.

I prefer fighting my way, but naked runs work for some of them. The harder caves can't really be ran through like that because you'll get killed really quick, just aren't suitable for running through.
For a cave that you want to fight through, most caves have similarly sized entrances, so there are a few dinos that fit in all caves except ones you have to crawl to get in.

A raptor pack is good for caving. The boost for the pack leader lets it take out most enemies down there really easily. Keep in mind though, that unridden raptors may jump into water to chase an enemy, so in certain caves where you don't want to risk them falling off an edge or something similar, it may be a better idea to pick different mounts if you can't get others to join you.

The baryonyx can also fit in most caves, and is a good fighter. It can run and swim fast, and can heal rapidly by eating fish. The baryonyx is all around a good caving dino that works for all but the hardest caves, so is a good choice if you can get your hands on one.

Sabers are another good option. The aren't as strong as a pack of raptors or baryonyx, but they do gather more chitin than most creatures, which the caves are full of. If you don't have a need for chitin though and have plenty of cementing paste, it's not the best option, but it does still work if you're careful or have a pack.

Besides those 3, anything you can fit in with 2-3k hp and a saddle should do you pretty well. I rode into caves not too long ago riding a frog with a pike and crossbow. You aren't really limited by much except the size of the entrance, so your best fighter around that can fit should cut it, and you can usually turn around and leave if it goes south.

I originally got the game to play with /v/ but the /v/ server died right when I got the game.
I just want to play a big titty khitan with a katana.

Vintage story is the vm approved option. Basically more convoluted slower pace minecraft. Progression is just getting through the metal ages and making cool shit unless you play on the vm server which may or may not still be active. I know the og reopened. If you like space engineers but want more survival, then I would say empyrion is a little better since it has more survival elements and dungeons and shit . It is not as good on the engineering side but making a carrier for your hover tanks and dropships is max comfy.
For full on survival, green hell and the long dark do survival better than anyone
7days to die or the forest if you like fighting mobs/npcs the most
Terreria if you want to fight bosses and like progression
Starbound if you want a really chill experience. Especially with mods it is comfy. Better for exploration and building than terraria but not as good with bosses or progression.
Rust/conan/ark if you just like pvp. These games are all like minecraft factions servers. Build up for a long time then raid when you get the resources then get offlined.

Vintage story’s chisel and world edit are amazing for building. Raft is alright for building. You could probably find a bit more exploring on steam.

Kind of, but I think there were some rebalances done so only the best thralls are absolute murderhobos, and some bosses might still take them down, if you don't heal them and aid them. Now, with better thralls mod you can make a small team of thralls. I like that personally, bring weaker thralls but more of them. And rebalance the damage done to player with settings. But I play solo.

The forest, the long dark, 7 days to die is alright alone, generation zero has been fun more a looter shooter than actual survival focus. Kenshi is amazing, grounded is alright. Project zomboid is solid alone, valhiem, volcanoids, terreria, starbound, stalker series, stranded deep.
Some cheap ones are radiation island, salt, and sir you are being hunted. All really fun and really cheap right now.

Yeah, I don't think you can change that, but that shouldn't really be a problem anyway.
I don't remember exact numbers, I would need to look them up, but I would advice to reduce damage player takes and increase harvest rate slightly and decrease time it takes to break thralls, and tame pets. Maybe reduce friendly damage done to thralls too.
And that's more of a matter of taste, but you might want to reduce claim area, so that when you build something trees and plants don't disappear, creating more of a cozy look, although this also will apply to npc spawn locations so take that into account.

Kenshi has the most autism systems but is slow paced. Modded starbound with frackin universe and arcana has a lot of autism systems and is more fast paced.
If you wanna go FULL autism /egg/ then from the depths but it's not really survival.
Green hell, the long dark, and the forest are all fun and the best if you wanna feel like you're actually surviving. The forest has the best combat, least systems of them. Green hell is my favorite. Okay combat, building basically from a prim survival youtube, still getting updates, and more realistic survival. The long dark is the most survival-y one but the cold and wind slows down the gameplay too much so I burn out of it fast.

KSP is what you play if you want realistic space shit. It has the most interesting physics system.
Space Engineers is the best for making ships themselves. It's the most in-depth, has better graphics and plenty of systems with more ship building autism. It's really fun with friends to show off ships to but the survival and single player is lacking.
Empyrion has eh ship building. You can do tiers/types. Bases, hover vessels, small vessels, and capital ships. There is some need for different ships, especially if you have weight for like mining, combat, exploration, carriers, etc, but not as much on the building side as space engineers. The survival and exploration is more fleshed out though. With factions, quests, duengons/raids, drones, animals, etc.
No Man's Sky has some flashier combat but the least autism building of them.

Meh, too much hassle and half the time they look like modern day models, ruining immersion. Conan models are just fine, and there are some mods for the too, if you need. I personally only use IQOL for extra sliders to reduce hand size and increase ass and hip sized.

Conan server owner here. I'm thinking of setting up a short 2 hour raid window one day a week for people to deal with structures they want gone, but can't catch the person online. I also don't want to have to have short decay timers in the case of someone not logging on for a while and having an invulnerable base for a long time. Thoughts?
