OLD SCHOOL FPS THREAD
Welcome, this thread is for fans of the old school, who still are playing or are interested in playing FPS from bygone times.
What:
>games you been playing?
>maps you been fragging on?
>modes you been losing at?

List of example games:
>Alien vs Predator
>Descent
>Doom
>Halo
>Jedi Knight
>Natural Selection
>Neotokyo/Dystopia/Source mods
>Quake
>Red Faction
>Red Orchestra
>Tribes
>Unreal Tournament
>Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

>can we get a server up for ____?
If you want a /vm/ server ask ITT. Some games have them already and some kind anons host if you ask nicely. Otherwise there's plenty of empty servers to hijack.
>Do people play ____?
Even the deadest of games still have active evenings or weekends.

I've been playing Dystopia for the first time. I didn't realize there was still people playing it.
It's pretty good, I like the spider mines and bunny hopping around as a heavy railgunning and punching lights in the face.

>>

Tons of Neotokyo lately. Should get back into quake.

Is Dystopia worth any playing? Also, I'd like it if we got a Wolf:ET game session going. Suck to be a eurofag and only have bots populating the servers.
>>
>Alien vs Predator
I only played AvP2 (+Primal Hunt)

Dystopia is worth trying, It's NA servers but i'm EU and it's fine at 90 ping. It's far more polished and finished than Neotokyo. Kinda like a weird mix of Neotokyo and W:ET.
Speaking of W:ET, it has a big EU playerbase. Filter bots. Make sure you're on the ETLegacy client
>>163882
I'm interested in AvP2. I've only played AvP1, which is a bit wonky on modern systems. The terrible rebellion/sega one too. Seems like there's a lot of people still playing in EU/RUS. Lot's of modded content as well. Wanna play this weekend? If anyone else is interested i'll post the download when I wake up later.

If you want to try Dystopia now is the time to do it because a recent update has brought some players back. You will probably like it if you like big objective based levels like in Enemy Territory or the multi-stage maps in TF2.

I want to play quake for the first time with a few friends, what game do I download?
>>
>>168893
For Quake 1 there's NQuake (https://www.nquake.com/) and for Quake 2 there's Tastyspleen's starter pack (http://q2s.tastyspleen.net/)

Neither one of these require you to buy their respective games. You just download them and you're good to go.

If you want to play Quake 3 you can use Quake3e (https://github.com/ec-/Quake3e) but this requires you to have the game files.

Quake Live is on Steam for 10 bucks

Quake Champions is f2p on Steam
>>
>>168927
which one do you recomend that has the old school playstyle? preferably the fastest
>>
>>168929
actually im changing my question, qhich one is simpler for setting up hosts and lobbies, or if it supports hamachi
>>
>>168935
You shouldn't have to use hamachi for any of these games. If you want lobbies then go for Quake Champions because it's the only game that has them. Every other Quake game uses a server browser.

Yeah you have to port forward to make a server. I take it you want to make your own server instead of joining an empty one because you don't want some pubstomper showing up and ruining everything?

Go to options and see what 'video mode' and 'aspect ratio' are set to.

Most people will be kind enough to let you play if you are just open about it. A trick you can use is telling people you hijacked the server for a noob cup.
The one that's most fast paced and old school is Q1 though. It's also the most fun when you're just bopping around as noobs since all the guns are OP as fuck.

NS2 is pretty good in EU, NA seems to have lots of shitty modded servers though.

Just play. If you're scared of being beaten or simply don't want to get beat then you'll never enjoy the genre. It's an unavoidable experience for everybody.
If you want to get your feet wet first, try Warfork on steam. It's free and has a lot of noobs and zoomers trying it out all the time. The vets are also mostly linux dads that are much friendlier than the jaded schizos on QL or Q3.
I love seeing new players on AFPS, especially ones that are keen to learn and start destroying me after a few weeks or months.

>>
>>163850
Late response but you have to play the light or medium class and take the cyberdeck implant. Enhanced cyberdeck gives you more security options and drains your energy slower than regular cyberdeck but it takes more implant slots. Otherwise cyber is just like a small separate area used for capping objectives sometimes. Your energy meter is your health in cyber and when you lose all your energy you get disconnected, and if it's because of another player damaging you down to 0 you get decked out temporarily where the jack-in point can't be used for a few seconds. You also take a bit of health damage when that happens, but you can deck out by pressing F1 before you hit 0 to avoid that. You can also do something like a rocket jump by right clicking at the ground as you jump in cyber and it only takes like 1 energy to do it. The security options let you put up a temporary defense on objectives in cyber that can slow down an opposing hacker or deck them out if they aren't careful taking them down.

Takes a little while to learn how it works because the layouts and functions vary a lot between maps. Might be a good idea to just mess around on a local server in cyber until you get the bare basics of it. Let me know if you have any other questions about it.
>>
>>175349
Yeah. Halo Reach and 3 both have the mouse camera anchored to the player model. On Reach it's awful and feels like you're swinging a brick around. On 3 it's the same but it works mostly fine. The only thing that giving it away is frame drops stopping mouse movement.
2's input is normal afaik. On CE it's OS dependent lol.
Supposedly the only fix for the netcode was for the BR, Tank rounds and other hitscan can still vanish into thin air.

Apparently the build was rushed out the door and wasn't final. It's a shame because I think with modding it could have been the best Tribes game. I like the movement, hitting perfect routes isn't as important and you can do some crazy flag steals and evasive maneuvers if you're good at it. That singleplayer is total trash though.

To this day it is one of the greatest butchery of aesthetics in any franchise I've enjoyed as they went from cool sleek power armor to some atrocious comic book style with ridiculous jet engines strapped on everyone's back. Gameplay wise it felt worse to me than T1 or T2 Classic but it's still much better than Tribes Ascend which Midair tried hard to pander to with their LCTF gamemode. Actually the more I think about Midair and their awful aesthetic, the more appealing Vengeance becomes in retrospect. Just goes to show things can and will get worse but that initial shock of coming home all excited and installing Tribes Vengeance and then experiencing the atrocious SP campaign will always make me resent the game. I don't think Tribes couldn't have a proper SP campaign though, just do one in the vein of Starsiege but infantry focused. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1sgdLSkrTQ

I don't agree that they entirely butchered it but I agree it's worse. I always found it interesting Tribes 1/2 had a lot of simulationist elements that made it feel closer to something like Arma than AFPS games.

delete all the files and redownload it. i've used multiple proton versions and the best seems to be 5.13-2. right click on quake live and at the bottom of the screen force it to use that proton version. i'm not sure if this is fixed now or not, but in that same screen click on the updates tab and uncheck the enable steam cloud synchronization at the bottom, that used to make my steam crash all the time. might be fixed now? idk. the game itself still crashes for me sometimes, the main place it usually crashes is in the server browser. when it is refreshing the list, wait for it to fully complete refreshing, do not click on anything until the "refresh all" button lights back up, that's when you know it's done refreshing. other than that the game usually runs fine 95% of the time, i have only crashed in the middle of a game two times

>building muscle memory is a meme
based retard
>>
>>185886
>aiming
>muscle memory
Unless you have gotten a new mouse or you are brand new to KBM you'll already have built muscle memory. It's the same reason any other dexterous sport doesn't have prodigies just popping up out of nowhere halfway through their career, just because they practiced a little. It's just talent you either have or don't. Either that or you're applying terrible technique and gimping yourself.
As for your comment about reaction and age, that's an overblown meme as well. The reason a lot of physical sports have low retirement ages is because of body degradation/injury potential. Starcraft players only retire early because they play in insanely unhealthy conditions at PC bangs with 5cm mouse mats.
>>
>>185905
>here's two entirely different things that can also hamper performance
>this discounts aim training and proves i'm right
based retard doubles down. further proof that anyone that boils anything down to "its a meme" are always drooling retards.

yes, aiming is a large majority muscle memory. it doesn't matter how good you are at shooting someone that is coming around a corner. if you don't have the muscle memory to deal with unexpected events then you are one-dimensional trash.

>muscle memory

It seems like a contradiction, but when you're responding to something in-game quicker than you can logically process the situation, you're falling back on muscle memory.

I forgot about systems 1 and 2. Does system 1 being the instinctual response means muscle memory is uncorrelated though? Wouldn't system 1 determine how you act while muscle memory allows you to perform the familiar motion smoothly?
>>
>>186810
Muscle memory is specifically repetitive motor tasks. CS spray patterns, knitting, playing a song on an instrument etc
Because the action is random, you're not going to be drawing on muscle memory. Muscle memory does still apply to things like posture or physically pressing the buttons though (technique).
Ideally you want aiming to be confined to system 1 as much as possible, which comes from a little experience.
>>
>>186826
I understand that because of how many unique situations occur in a game muscle memory plays a smaller role than when playing a piano, for example, but there's a lot of "familiar" situations too. Like making a flick from one point to another. Over time you will have made the motion of moving your mouse that distance enough times that it becomes natural and fluid thanks to muscle memory. Obviously you'll make flicks to a spectrum of different distances, but over time you will have developed a degree of muscle memory for them as well. This case is particularly relevant if you're replaying maps where certain sightlines make repeated situations more likely. Even if the repetition isn't as cut and dry as swinging a baseball bat I don't think that FPS games have enough unique muscle movements to count out muscle memory as it applies to aim.
Anyway, I'm not even really saying I disagree with you, just suggesting that muscle memory is more relevant to aim than you're saying. Also that system 1 and muscle memory are two components to a quick in-game response.

halo is the medium
>weapon accuracy isn't reduced by movement, you can use your weapons to their maximum potential while using all of your movement, but at the same time the movement is quite slow
>there are loadouts just like modern games (only 2 weapons at a time), but you find them on the map just like an AFPS
>shield regen but you need health packs for health, again it's a medium between the two styles
>everyone starts out the same, but again the 2 weapon loadouts does sort of define you (not really)
>TTK is too high to be a I saw you first so I win game like CoD or CS, but it's not high enough to destroy everyone with a DM skill gap like Quake/Unreal/TF/Tribes
>>
>>202887
Halo is more of a team game with arena school DNA than either being wholly defined by the arena shooter/twitch shooter spectrum. Loadouts don't really exist until Reach because for the most part the starting weapon is the best weapon in the game outside of the Sniper or RL. Everything else either only is really good in a small amount of situations or is completely useless, and the Sniper and RL are just straight powerups since you can always toss away your more useless secondary.
Also, the team game aspect plays into this and the health, because since shields regenerate (health regenerates too in all of the games after except Reach) you will always have at least enough health to be in a "battle ready" state, so you can camp the powerups, unlike in arena shooters where the winning player is being whittled down by the losing player and can't gain those resources back except by finding them around the map
Then again all of the games are weird and have exceptions. In CE some weapons accuracy was based on how close you were to the enemy and in Reach movement also impacted accuracy. And TTK in all games can be quite low when you factor in the team game aspect.
>>
>>202844
Yeah. I'd take newer too at this point.

>but it's not high enough to destroy everyone with a DM skill gap like Quake/Unreal/TF/Tribes
It's the same. If you get ganged by 2 people you lose. If you have power weapons or powerups you win (unless you're shit)
>>
>>202992
>in Reach movement also impacted accuracy.
It did? Anyway good post. First person i've seen who understands the team aspect of the halo design. Most people are at extreme ends of the spectrum it's impossible to discuss halo seriously.
>>
>>164130
Yeah halo 1 and 2 are the most like classic fps games. 3 and Reach are the in between games, with 4 being completely like a modern shooter and 5 being like Titanfall with classic fps elements
>>
>>168159
Well, it is more as an in between of classic and modern fps. It has regenerating shields, but you also have health which you need health packs for. And it also has a two weapon limit, but everyone starts with an AR and Magnum and you need to find and pick up different guns and power ups around the map
>>
>>168893
Maybe Champions (it's free) but I would recommend 2 and 3 (they shouldn't be that expensive on Steam)

The commands are always in the same sequence though, if i remember right, the placement of commands is randomized.
Pick a light body and a cyberdeck enhancement, your energy is your hp bar in cyberspace and slowly ticks down. As for the general confusion of the map layouts, you just have to get used to it and figure out which nodes are actually important.

Old as fuck message but try changing your resolution and fullscreen value to something that doesn't crash (r_fullscreen, r_mode, r_customwidth and r_customheight should help, check http://www.regurge.at/ql/ for how to use them) and set them again in the options menu (or in your config). I had that problem on two different Linux machines at install and I believe that's what fixed it.

ioquake doesn't?
I've switched between both a few times and I like having a flat camera too. I haven't used ioquake in years though.
cpma bots are trash, they don't jump and they have an unhealthy obsession with their signature weapons. There's probably much better bots out there.
There's still people who play OSP/VQ3 duels too, afaik.
Why don't they work with vq3?

Well, qpl is alive for this year, too, so there's that. I'm having a blast dueling in qc.

Hey /vm/ bros, I was thinking in making a charity thread, but instead of donating things, anons would give away their time to play games requested by others. But it then would need to be accessible games -- preferably free and lighter ones. Is it a retarded idea?
>>
>>217286
yup
>>
>>217286
So, just a coop thread? Playing with someone is not charity, unless it's some kinda pro playing with a noob situation. You might still get some luck saying "i wanna play quake hmu here's my steam/whatever" so it can work.

I think it would be better to figure out what afps most people would casually play then throw up a server, then schedule a date and time for regular matches. Otherwise, what could you really offer another anon besides some 1v1s?

CoD 2 chads where we at

>So, just a coop thread?
Not necessarily, but I suppose that would work better.
>Playing with someone is not charity, unless it's some kinda pro playing with a noob situation
The charity concept I meant is that one would play a game requested, even if it is bad or lame. Just to make an anon's day
>>217838
>then throw up a server, then schedule a date and time for regular matches
That sounds good, but from what I've saw on dedicated threads, the server happens to be empty in the scheduled days, the OP gets annoyed, closes the server and the thread dies.
>Otherwise, what could you really offer another anon besides some 1v1s?
What they request, be it help in getting that pesky achievement, playing that dead game they like, or even being their target practice. Now that I think about it, the thread would work like a request thread? Anyways, I was half expecting it to not work with us guys.
>>
>>217950
Well, I like the idea. I don't expect it to work, as people will just ignore games they can't be bothered to pick up, but worth a try.
>>
>>217950
there's already many sites and services for this kind of thing. This ain't the place for it.

Go ask in the quake champions thread

TN definitely looks like shit but once you use it for a few days it stops being so egregious. they really suffer in areas with extreme amounts of light and dark. With the lights being very bright and darks still being slightly illuminated and a minor bleed.

don't even notice these things in 90 percent of games.
>>

Do you have one at hand anon? I'd like to be in the donating side
>>
>>217950
>be it help in getting that pesky achievement, playing that dead game they like, or even being their target practice
Not a bad idea, but there's usually discord servers for every kind of game where you can get people to play even obscure shit together. The niche of /vm/ is playing with anons and not necessarily having to rely on discord or whatever to organize games and the player pool isn't that huge to begin with. Not trying to shit on your idea, just saying that this board isn't optimal for it.
>>218692
>there's already many sites and services for this kind of thing
There are? I've never heard of something like that actually existing.

I tried to play through the original Dooms after not doing so for 10 years and I instantly feel like I'm going to throw up from motion sickness. I don't have this problem in any other FPS games. Feels bad

Are you playing on a modern source port? I get motion sick if I play without vertical mouse look and leave all the viewbobbing on
