>>93378Anon, you make a lot of music. Maybe you can help me, a beginner and amateur, find out what's missing from my protagonist's theme (this is a draft, final version will have more instrumentation than just piano, so I'm mainly looking on composition advice)https://voca.ro/16OSg6Rqn76Z
>>120201Oh! This is sounding incredibly pretty, my friend! I think this definitely works, especially up to the 0:35 mark! After that, I might suggest bringing in a new instrument as you go into the new section? Maybe a new line on something like a flute, clarinet, or trumpet? Could be playing counter to the current piano melody! Like, a nice, simple line, to contrast how active the piano is.At the section change at 1:03, maybe you could add a little percussion too? Depends on the color, and direction you want for the character. I could maybe see a snare drum line, or just some simple, low, resonant hits, to reinforce that we're near the end of the piece! I really don't think it needs a whole lot, though. This is a great WIP. You've got all the foundation you need!
>>120202thanks anon. i will try to build on it more. in the mean time can you tell me how you build songs with so many layers and (i don't know how to describe it) passive melodies that kind of blend into the background
>>120240Well, my approach to writing things tends to start with just having a piano sketch! I write the melody, the chords, and the overall form from beginning to end on piano, and then start transferring things over to other instruments, depending on the style, and type of music! So like, you can have a melody on guitar, or chords on strings, or synths, or whatever! It's a sort of "start small, and develop things to get bigger" mindset though that I work with.Layers get added in depending on what things are often needed. Once you have melody, chords, and form, I'll typically bring in percussion, which can be a huge part of a piece overall! Then I'll add a bass, and it can be an actual electric bass, or low strings, or trombone, or whatever! But it's a low melody line that re-enforcing the roots of the chords, and the progression you're on! One thing I like to do in particular though is write a counter-melody that sits slightly less importantly than the main melody line. This risks feeling busy, but that's where mixing, and panning can come into play. A main melody can be situated dead center, while a counter melody could be panned in the sides, so there's extra room.>>117219Like this piece is a decent example of that. The guitar is played center, while the violins are skewed about 35% to the left and right. There also lots of other little stuff going on in this one. Like you have some string shorts on viola and cello playing stuff, but they're mostly just outlining the chord progression, and creating some extra rhythmic energy to go along with the percussion, and bass. Same with the piano, which is just playing some chords rhythmically in the background.
>>120275Cool thanks anon, I'll play with it a little
https://soundcloud.com/ts2000/morning-mist-update-masteredI made some cold music!
>>120948Sounds good anon. I feel it can also be used for a "crystal" environment too, not just cold or winterI tried to take your advice with layering instruments (different song this time): https://voca.ro/1ob3kkiZnu8v
>>120950This is really, really nice, anon! The piano sounds lovely, and the synths really add some great, bright energy to it! I know it's probably not totally finished, but I think if you could write up a nice little ending, or a fade out, this would be a really killer track! You did wonderful work!
https://soundcloud.com/ts2000/clear-skies-live-masteredI did a little rock tune!
https://soundcloud.com/ts2000/neo-taishoAnother fancy rock one.
>>121962kinohow are you doing the guitar solo? I tired to use some vst's for fl studio in the past but they all sounded like garbage.
>>121980Ah, thank you very much! It's a real guitar, actually! Most of that track is live recorded instruments, except for the drums!
>>122077Well, that's a shame. Not for you I mean, that's pretty good. But for me, I don't want to learn to play guitar and buy one and hook it up and all that, haha
>>120200>https://soundcloud.com/ts2000/overwhelming-odds-mastered-03This is a baller of a track
