I've never been super into VNs, but I'm looking to try some less mainstream ones. Over the years, I've played>Hashihime of the old Book Town which was fucking great and extremely gay>Narcissu, which gave me a new perspective on suicide>Cripple Fucking Sim 2012 (Rin best girl, no clue how I didn't develop a foot fetish from her)>Saya no Uta, which I was in full edgelord mode looking for fucked up stuff at the time, and it definitely fit the billShould I just try another titan of the genre like muv-luv or something? I had a friend recommend Kara no Shoujo too.

This might not be the place to ask, and if it's not, I apologize. I've been thinking of doing a VN myself - I've got the staff and funding in place. However, I only ever played H VNs back in the day, and I'm constantly struggling to think about the kinds of things people look for in their games as well as just how much customizability with routes people usually enjoy.Do you guys have any reccomendations for people who are trying to dip their toes in the genre? I did look at the chart in the OP and I'm looking at some of those to begin with, but I'm just curious with how people that play these games overall feel about things. It wasn't supposed to be strictly hentai to begin with, but fanservice-y, and with lots of comedy, but not sure just how much the storylines proper carry the genre forward. I've seen lots of neat for the Saturn on Niconico and such, but I'm out of my depth here. Thanks in advance.

>>431368625I hate to say it, but if you have a staff to worry about, I'd agree with this anon here >>431368868Not so sure that the medium is dying, but with the advent of AI, the price/length is gonna be way down, even from where it is now. Tenable for an indie, but if you're running an actual, multi-person studio, I wouldn't risk it.Just... do your market research, make sure you have realistic figures of who you're even selling to... Steam probably has stats on that, though I'm sure you know more than me.I hear that most VNs have to publish with CN translations these days, cause the English market is so small, and the Japanese one long since saturated. Also, I know this sucks to hear, but you're gonna have a strike or two against you ("EVN", all ages) in the eyes of people here. The latter might benefit you in potential market size, but the former is gonna be a stain, simply cause EVNs are largely HCG shovelware or have an ideological bent (anglosphere culture war shit.)That said, if you decide to anyway, for the love of god don't set it in a fucking cafe...

>>431370081No, it's just two/three people tops. This isn't a money sink. Hell, it's more of an attempt to get a concept off the shelf, so profits aren't even a chief worry at the moment (everything is so embrionary at this point that if we think it's worth it to 'get the word out', depending on the reach of VNs, that we might do a free release, if anything to start out, and then maybe we can release the usual polished up version for Steam).(And no, it isn't about a cafe. It's basically about cyborg tribes where the focus is more on the characters themselves than the setting, mostly dealing with comedy and fighting.)

Seems wrong imo, so I'm sure other anons will have better ideas.Cause seriously, 2k-ish consistent VN purchases seems super low.>t. has a half-written VN sitting around that I paused, cause I realized I would spend years writing it and get like 15k unless I TL'd for overseas markets, which requires 30-60k for a larger VN
>>431373823Hey, thanks for all this info and analysis, man. Went above and beyond, I really was just expecting to go out there and do it myself. As for Steamdb, as someone who has a little indie title forgotten on the shelves there, I have bad news concering these metrics: they tend to be blown up to high hell.I don't remember now if it was Steamdb or Steamspy, though, but I do remember one site I was told to keep tabs on how my stuff was doing pretty much quadrupled the sales from how the estimates portrayed it. Now, this was around 8 years ago, so they could've surely picked up their pace, but I've also heard similar talks of things like Socialblade grossly misrepresenting Youtube revenue, so that's also something to keep in mind. The game I released didn't really go anywhere, so my expectations are well and tempered (and also a considerable part of why I want to probe the field as much as I can before commiting to anything). It's why we might even just go free to see how well things might (or might not) play out overall. As for your own VN, at least from my own end, I always see things as just playing according to your expectations. Like, if you do think it might make 15k at best, maybe downsize the scope of the story and plan for the asset creation and usage to match in a way where 15k can be taken as a pretty good haul.

>>431374503No worries fren, I did it for myself anyway, though I'm not sure if I wanted to encourage myself or not lmaoNot sure how the big sites do their purchase estimates, I just took the raw player data and estimated based on <black magic and duct tape, see below>- normal guys play 1 or 2 routes- 1/10 might leave it on overnight, in the background- I took 9 days to play all routes, so say normal guys play for 4 to do their 2-ish- Some guys drop it, other guys go for completion- a couple leave it on overnightThen adjusted it for what I saw for my steam friends ("observed" N=4+1 , so very VERY rough correction factor)My own estimate was 4 days, correcting took it to 3, which is why I said my estimate is generous.(Also, "play time (days)" should be rephrased "days played", didn't realize the ambiguity till I double-checked)Anyway, best of luck, just thought you should know how (un)reliable my math probably is. If you do end up pulling it off, drop a link here-- don't worry, even if they call you an EVNfag, I'll still read it.Mind if I ask, is your plan to release a short (30k +-10k words) VN?(for comparison, Saya no Uta was 80k, most 20hr VNs are ~200k)I'm not sure how useful that will be to correctly gauge the market... Might be enough to pull off a single heroine, but if you try to do a full four-course, you might end up with Girls x3, where you know the heroines more by archetype than established personality. Anyway, serious VN readers won't go for a story like that unless it's focused and plot driven (thriller, mystery, "short story" drama) since we're expecting "GenericHeroine( id=12598, archetype=oneesan, hair=pink)", and all that's left to appeal to is our coomer side (a la >>431377181)Also, I should mention that a chunk of anime-style Indie devs have taken to saying "Remember- Fan service is customer service!"Not saying it's good or bad, it just be how it be

>>431377827Thanks even more for the extra info man. I think you can see just how green I at this when I hadn't even considered the length of the VN as far as word length goes - and that's literally the biggest currency in such a project, so that's something I need to screw my head around on to pronto.I guess it'd probably end up as a short VN. Although I was always curious about the genre I've mostly played non-VN games for most of my life, so I don't know if I could bring some different sensibilites to it overall. Since it was basically a "meet this cast/setting" story, and since it was mostly comedy/fighting based, I even thought of it being like a story where the player is provided a "level select" of sorts, and then depending how you play each first 'level' you selected could trickle down with different effects for subsequent ones. I might be wildly off my game, but bringing it up with some people I know did put some VNs out there, they said that sounded a little uncommon. It's also most of an all-girls cast (though there are men, of course) and I can't lie that I've even thought about marketing prospects to begin with (Japan always does self inserts for a reason). But since I'm just trying to see where this takes me, I'd take the risk. Either way, I was figuring this might help flesh all of the girls more, could also help if overt sex appeal isn't a thing.>Also, I should mention that a chunk of anime-style Indie devs have taken to saying "Remember- Fan service is customer service!"Sex sells. I doubt it will never not sell. I can see the criticisms, sure. But to me that ends up going dangerously close to the whole moral panic when slashers were all the rage for movies. People talked as if we were about to see a deluge of murderers or something, and while there ARE bad eggs that were wired wrong that took that message from the films, I don't think the answer for mental health lies in censorship.>>431378395Maybe not in VNs, but there's this in a gacha.

Not 100% on it since I lowered their volume and sort of filter them out mentally, but the beeps are used for emotions for sure and I'm pretty sure the ones after a question are to indicate right/wrong.>>431354137It's funny you mention the glass meme, I haven't gotten that CG but I know one in the gallery is labelled [Glass Her] or something so they're aware of the reference.>it's been nice having some big overarching plot reveals earlyAh based you got there. I avoided mentioning it just because I figured you'd pick it up and I think that twist works so much better if you aren't aware of it the 1st route. That "part of the game" is especially good imo, it's a big jigsaw puzzle and it only really takes 2 or 3 routes to get enough solid pieces to start grasping a bigger picture, because you'll naturally get an idea of what the other pieces might be due to the pre-finale scorecard on the wall, and just listening to what people say and watching how they act

>>431378395Sure, the plot impetus was retarded, but it's not like we gotta pretend it doesn't exist, right? >>431374503btw, thanks for the advice. Profit/loss was never a concern, since I learned to draw, work as an engineer (embedded, so code), and got a creative writing side-major... It was more a factor of reach/risk and opportunity cost. My VN was a darker historical-fantasy chuunige with a fairly serious story, so it was always gonna be a home run or a miss. If I spend another 2 years writing a 400k novel (par for similar VNs, 90k+all prep took 1 year), but all I get is 100 purchases, 50 who play it through, and 10 reviews with the most upvoted being "good heroines, but the main character sucked", well...I don't care how well-adjusted you are, that's gonna be a critical hit to the ego. Though if you have any advice on getting around that, I'd be interested>>431379556Could be cool, but also ambitious. Authors (I'm assuming you're one?) really don't "get" the exponential complexity from branches until they sit down and start writing out the decision/outcome tree (at least, that was the case for me, hence 80k goal quintupling). If you cheap on it, tho, you're gonna piss a lot of people off (just read reviews, players hate when "my choices didn't matter!", and I feel similar). Older games kinda attempted this (Family Project is one I can think of off the cuff), with mixed results. You might have a lot more leeway if you gam-ify the "level select"/"roster" concept, though it'd have to fit into the story. Just be wary of making entirely new mechanics, most the EVNs that try bomb because of it (Celine, for example).>dangerously close to the whole moral panic ... I don't think . mental health lies in censorship.Oh, I very much agree. What I meant to convey was "if you come out of the gate advertising sex and are EVN, people will pigenhole you for H-shovelware, with all the effects on expectations (horny people don't want plot, not upfront)<char limit lol>

>>431380914>Could be cool, but also ambitious(...)I'd say I'm an author for brevity's sake, although my creative writing was never much of the focus of the things I did for money. Regardless, I think as long as things are reasonably simple ("something you did in a prior level will always help you if you tackle [X] different level later, no matter how later" vs. "there are cumulative changes that happen with each level cleared; every iteration has to create a unique scenario"). Also, googling "Celine visual novel" didn't help much, got a link? Curious to see what they got wrong.>Though if you have any advice on getting around that, I'd be interestedI'd definitely say take this setting you clearly put time and effort into, and think about a way to ease up an introduction into it, do a smaller story (or do something alike, hitting similar notes; downscale the scope if you feel confident enough, etc). Release that and see how much of an audience it grabs, to avoid flying blind. A hit to the ego is always compounded by expectations; as you mentioned, it'd be make or break, odds are.I think handling hits to the ego with creative endeavors always depends on making sure you land a hit SOMEtime. These are terribly overused clichés, but they became such for a reason. It's pretty much "nothing ventured, nothing gained" and just not letting your idea die. There's also the famous Edison quote about "not failing, but finding 1000 ways that didn't work". If you found the way that worked, nothing else matters. And while there is no way to manufacture an audience to your ideas, never underestimate the power of good advertisement. It really might open people up more if they see something that is catchy and speaks to them directly (of course, not failproof. One of my failures was no advertising whatsoever, hoping publishers sending builds around would do it).

This game is just funny. It's an imposter finding game, where you get instructions on how many times to press a button, and even though you're not the impostor you can choose to lie and then make up excuses like "well I'm just European".>>431384337>I'm surprised important revealsYeah, there's a lot of reveals in the game and they're pretty liberal with lots of them. I'm guessing they only locked routes that spoil major stuff that's technically supposed to be revealed in a different route? Sometimes the way the game foreshadows things is basically just a reveal in itself. I haven't done the route you did, but all of those spoiler tags are things I know in depth from multiple other routes, so they're pretty common knowledge. The ClydexDevon arc is really cute and has some great hidden moments depending on choices you can make mid-games, and jumbling the order up makes the arc all that more interesting

I'm trying to get all the dialogue options and learn tidbits when I can so I'm trying to do all the choices in these games which is eating up some time. >>431385324>I'm trying to get all the dialogue options and learn tidbits when I can so I'm trying to do all the choices in these games which is eating up some timeYeah there are some games where you have tons of permutations. The current game I'm in is one of those with tons of funny variant scenes. At one point you get to decide which of the 4 guys in the room would want to date Bell the most, and Clyde makes up different excuses for all of them, like pic related for Zeph. Pointing to yourself is hilarious too.I would at least try to keep doing all of the "big choices" if you're enjoying it, this game is really good at hiding big content behind them. If you didn't see my earlier comments on it, stuff like choosing which leg of a relay race to run results in completely different content depending on your choice. If you only do one version, the 2nd leg variant is the only one to go deep in a sweet ClydexDevon scene>That's good to know then; the redundancy and commonality.Yeah, especially with the loop there are a lot of things you'll learn basically every route. Like, I think every route has to include the scoreboard of people who already won, which contains a lot of information, and the early wins are confirmed in every route after them of course.

The larger story seemed to just jump around, never really explaining what the cause/effect (or even logical relation), despite each of the scenes being perfectly coherent.Turns out the TV-set that we first saw in a CG got turned interactive at some point, and the author made the "glue" of the story as animated, horror "children's cartoons". Didn't realize that til I got my 3rd ending, tho, and judging by the reviews, not many people did.My idea was "Author has motif/mechanic to make their game unique, doesn't even have to be a bad one, but they overlook some detail and it completely fails to land, tanking the whole story".and I was gonna segway it to>These are terribly overused clichés, but they became such for a reasonbut you beat me to it. Looks like we're on the same page, then.> ease up an introduction into itI'd considered that, the introduction (setting+impetus+minor resolution) works out to be roughly the length of a standard "light" VN, but I'd have to shoehorn a couple "future" character appearances in. Plus, there wouldn't be any H-scenes or even romance yet, which is probably a death sentence for indie VNs desu.Or I could be to re-write the intro so the MC and the first heroine were always romantic, but I'd have to fuck with their characters, since the MC was supposed to be apathetic and the heroine to act like a Victorian-era woman. That'd make the game a ladder-sequence like Amatsutsumi, which was... actually, very well received, despite it not being my cup of tea. Huh... that might actually be the safest route, now that I say it.>never underestimate (a) good advertisementI had considered a couple YT'ers to reach ~500 demo, but I'd be curious if you pulled off a more general-audience ad?

Jade set off a ton of early red flags as "the character I would not enjoy" but he's turning out to be alright. I still need to see his full backstory, but if this is the weakest character in The Game Of Fourtune then the cast is really strong. They do a really good job of setting up games that aren't only fun to play, but good at highlighting the flaws and unique traits of each character, and the last game was that for Jade 100%.

>>431384637Anyway, I gotta get some sleep, but I really appreciate the advice, fren.I had kinda talked myself out of it, but writing the intro as a stand-alone single-heroine VN could work, and it's already half done...Good luck on your team's project, sounds like you've got solid direction and some good ideas. Seriously, post it here when you release, ok? (but don't shill, jannies get pissy)Also, a couple things I only thought of now:- might want to ask people's opinion on voiced/unvoiced. Every time a major EVN releases, people here complain that it's unvoiced, but I've also yet to see a single E-voiceover that people liked (ex. "Ravager" on steam, not a strict VN but probably a similar audience, and the voiceover got... mixed reception)- also, here's an EVN that (on steam, at least) outsold HGB, and the author has a history of success. Not sure what it is she does, but I figure more data points never hurts(Sweetest Monster -ebi-hime, sale records here, https://steamdb.info/app/585890/charts/ , comes to ~852 on the same spreadsheet I used, compared to HGB's 642)

Jade's route was really good too, they connected him more thoroughly to the plot than I was expecting through his backstory, and his tropes aren't as annoying as they first seem. This is the point where I'd bring up my biggest pet peeve about The Game of Fourtune so far. Character sprites have props that they just shouldn't. Jade holds a laptop, which just makes no sense because electronics don't work in Bell's game and Jade knew that. I held off on mentioning it because there was always the chance they became relevant, but I finished Jade route without his laptop even getting a casual mention or use. Frankly this sprite design aspect is clumsy and too on the nose. They obviously wanted it to be visually noticeable that Jade was a programmer, so they slapped a laptop in his hands. Just have his shirt say "HELLO WORLD" in a retro font if subtle character designs are off the table. It's not just Jade, Zeph carries a skateboard but never uses it even when he's in a race challenge. Lilith has a random chemical flask, as if labcoat and medical gloves weren't enough to get her scientist vibes across. Some of these are more excusable, I don't mind Laura holding a few flowers or Theresa holding playing cards or Richard holding his book, because you can give the benefit of the doubt that these are comfort items or boredom killers for the characters without expecting them to come into play too often. How do you give someone a skateboard and then not even mention why they aren't using it in their competitions? The worst part about this is that it sounded like it had real potential early on. At the start of the game it was explained that the players could take non-weapon items with them, Clyde notes a bunch of people went back to their cars after hearing that. But they've never used this as a chekov's gun yet, I have a feeling the line was written just to excuse these sprite choices.>>431398321She's a florist, she probably grows her own Opium.

It's actually kind of hilarious that there are people obsessive enough with a niche this tiny that still refuse to touch many of the best and most influential titles in the medium for reasons as silly as "W-well I only read things originally written by Japanese people and then translated into English arbitrarily". I can sort of get coomers that won't touch all ages stuff, and I can get puritans that won't touch porn stuff, but it's funny to think so many people are guided by some weird mix of racism and elitism over a group of people that doesn't even contain themselves, because if it did they'd be on 2ch.

That includes Danganronpa, it splashed some pink paint and weird anime stuff on top of a few Agatha Christie concepts. More and more countries are making more and more visual novels, and they're getting better at it every year. Look at the top seller VNs on Steam, half of them aren't Japanese. You're clinging onto a concept that is already out-dated, give it another decade and Japanese VNs will be looked at in the same way as video games in general. Aside from those with anime adaptations, there aren't many of those even among JVNs.One of vndb's top 5 titles, Muramasa, is probably less known than even Love, Money and Rock'n Roll, and even Muvluv was considered "niche" on otaku forums that weren't specifically targeted towards visual novels before it got an anime adaptation.
>>431410871>Give me something like VA-11 and I'll agree that i've heard of itYeah, no shit you heard of one of the top vns on vndb. So, I've finished InoGure! All in all it is a very enjoyable FD, pretty much the main reason to read Nagomibako at all. Aside from the minigames, that is.Shiori is a fun protagonist, and switching to an all-girls cast is never a bad choice. I must admit that I enjoyed those short yuri h-scenes vastly more than Cartagra's repetitive ones. The Sayo Academy SoL scenes add a lot of characterization to previously rather underused characters, like Takako and Nana. I wonder why KnS never got extra content like this? It feels a lot more silly and nonsensical than later InnoGrey works. The FD also gives some insight into best takoyaki merchant Daisuke's past and perfectly leads into the final part of Nagomibako - the takoyaki grilling minigame. Now then, off to 'play the tutorial'!

>>431414558>99% of all EVNs are just 30 minute long porn games or patreon scamThe silly number aside, they're made by people that wouldn't know visual novels existed at all if KS didn't exist. Either they read KS, or they learned about VNs/Renpy from people that did.
Do anons think you will read all the vns you ever wanted in your lifetime? I look at my backlog and I'm struggling to pick my next vn.
Damn brat, making fun of adults... needs takoyaki correction!
>>431414625>People can never score shit properly though since it's always 7+ so you gotta look at the ratings as if "6" was "3"Actually the reality is that people only pick up things they expect they will enjoy, and typically drop things they don't end up enjoying before finishing them. Nobody is reading every visual novel ever made and giving them unbiased scores, they're picking up stuff that interests them. Someone that loves Rance will keep reading the games and keep giving them high scores, someone that gives rance a try blind and then hates it right away probably drops it without scoring it, someone that knows rance isn't for them because they don't want rape content or rpg battles doesn't pick it up to begin with.

>>431414913No. I'm not as cynical as most and I love lots of types of vns, I'll never run out. Life is good.

give me a vn like yume miru
>>431415035>furry hitlerGood bet that the lineage of that VN includes Hatoful Boyfriend. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's probably the first big "joke VN" in the west
>>431415035It sounds like you're just completely letting bias blind you. How are you assuming someone that makes a "furry hitler" vn even found out that visual novels exist if they never heard of KS? They didn't just magically get born knowing about visual novels, something was their gateway.
>>431414913I've come to terms with the fact that my backlog is never getting cleared; my steam library has like 100 ish games I've never opened. I'm only now reading konosora>>431414997does it have an english translation?

>>431415383>yes their gateway was other low quality trash games. none of them got inspired by a real VN to make their garbage. This is impossible and you'd know it if you took 2 seconds to think. The early trash games had to have been inspired by good games because there was no magic spark in people's brains letting them know visual novels existed without ever seeing a visual novel.>at most they might have seen some youtuber reaction to DDLCDDLC is a 2017 game, obviously it couldn't have inspired anything until after it was out. There's also the possibility that DDLC wouldn't have been what it is if KS wasn't first. The idea of making a parody of dating sim visual novels in renpy and releasing it for free had to come from somewhere.
>>431415824Sounds like you're bad at picking games for yourself. If I pick up a game and it feels like a 5, I drop it and pick up something better.
>>431416048Why would I drop something that I enjoy? Again, enjoyable /=/ good, you can like and enjoy something alot but still rate it low cause it's garbage.
>>431416219why even bother rating if the number has no connection to if you liked it or not? people like you are why steam only does thumbs up and down, they don't want autists going "well I liked this game and enjoyed it, but it is only 5/10 somehow, now I am off to find something I did not enjoy so I can give it a 8/10".
>>431415957>see moege>make joke game>see joke game>make more joke game>see more joke game>make sex with hitlerKS was never part of this - no one parodied it because its not a moeslop dating sim.And if you really wanna get into inspirations, dont make me fucking remember the newgrounds porn games from way way way way back. love hina dating sim etc this shit was around way before KS and arguably might've popularized the dating sim genre moreso than anything else
>>431415957people can know visual novels exists without having played them. or are you making the very very dumb assumption that these creators have actually read any vn?
After muramasa I can never look at vndb ratings, I just pretend the rating system doesn't exist because it's completely meaningless.

>>431416369Easiest example would be with anime, if it's done something well and was fun to watch, but then you realize the OST might aswell not have existed, the animation was shoddy etc and you're left with a "1 cause it was shit", but +5 cause "insert redeeming feature which made you stick around".Otherwise why even have numbers lower than 6 - no one will watch these and if you didn't finish it why are you rating it.>people like you are why steam only does thumbs up and down, they don't want autists goinglol what. thats not why, it just simplified the rating to avoid drama over retarded number ratings since people dont use them correctly anyway

>>431416525I never said people get into VNs through moege but you're blatantly wrong. Why do you think localization exists - normans eat up this slop. Asashit etc is how people get into VNs.Look at fucking nekopara, it's attracted far more people than KS ever could. Saya no Uta aswell. You're overestimating KS, it was only big for a year or two, only been a gateway VN in that short timeframe.
>>431416570>Otherwise why even have numbers lower than 6 - no one will watch these and if you didn't finish it why are you rating it.You have numbers lower than 6 for the masochists, big reviewers that aren't paid off, and people terrible at picking stuff. That doesn't mean the average person is going out of the way to finish a 3 after they realize it's not for them.

KS was so good at converting people because it was free legally.>Look at fucking nekopara, it's attracted far more people than KS ever could. Saya no Uta aswell. You're talking about post-KS games. You might as well look at modern videogames and conclude Nintendo never needed to exist and that all the Sony gamers would still exist in the same numbers if the NES-N64 never existed. You can't always point and say "This specific Fortnite kid likes games because of Nintendo", but it's undeniable that ripples from early booms in popularity effect later shit. If Nintendo never got into games, for all we know gaming tech could be a full decade behind what it is now, and maybe no company does any gimmicky normie shit like the Wii which means gaming is still a niche nerd hobby.
>>431416542>Umineko out of literally nowhereMindbroken.
>>431417192and before someone replies going >post-KS>sayaYes I know it was out first, it also didn't draw people in massive numbers instantly. There are 10 people saying "I got in through KS" for every 1 saying "I got in through Saya".
>>431417192None of this is possible to prove or measure. VNs were an incredibly niche medium before Nekopara. All you have is anecdotal evidence, but Nekopara has massive steam sales to prove it.

>>431417192That moege - the dating sim games - inspired dating sim game parodies. Why would you think this somehow means people get into VNs through moege? Its not even that I dont think it's true (it is, again, nekopara), but these are entirely disconnected from each other. Bizarre conclusions to draw.>Not many people are paying for or pirating their 1st visual novel without realizing they like the medium first. KS was so good at converting people because it was free legally.proof?>disregarding ytlol>saya no uta>post kswhat did he mean by this?>ignored dating sim games which was a massive 2000s gatewayAlso it's not like games post KS dont count - the time didn't stop at its release, people still get into visual novels and still make parody games. KS just got left behind, it's failed to inspire anything long term.
I got into VNs through watching clannad, then reading the VN. After that it was shuffle, and then I think FSN was recommended to me. It wasnt until years after that that I started exploring what VNs had in earnest. So yeah I guess moege did get me into VNs at the start

saya no SHITa didnt influence shit, if anything only gave the wrong idea of visual novels being short and shitty to those who read it
>>431418387I was being polite, but I'll tell you what it means: You are talking out of your ass
>>431417468doubtful, because the poll can only tell you what current /vn/ people think. you're never going to get people to be truthful, and you're never going to be able to see what % of people picked up their first vn in 2020 and don't know anything about what came before.

Are you supposed to reread the common route in VNs everytime you go for a heroine or do you guys just skip
>>431420678Multiple saves + don't waste too much time reading one VN.
>>431420427You're mentioning a lot of things and ignoring the 1 thing that matters: whether or not it was drawing new people into the medium. Normies were not seeing Saya and going "oh this is what I will go out of the way to do today". Saya is basically a famous 2nd or 3rd game because it's the thing people rec to newfags after they come in saying "I'm new, all I read was Katawa Shoujo, rec me stuff". Katawa Shoujo is a famous true gateway vn because it was free and shilled everywhere and anyone even mildly curious about "that game 4chan made" gave it a shot.
>>431420678It depends on the VN but most of the time you just skip the common route and go straight to the next route.
>>431420678If i’m going through it immediately after finishing a route I skip it most of the time, unless its a short common route or extra long branching route.
>>431420530Since you don't know the basics, lets go over some real quick:https://summertime-saga.en.uptodown.com/androidThat's a link to specifically 1 source of an unofficial download for an Android version of Summertime Saga. >>431422143>Bell samefaceyeah 1 of the CG artists just draws everyone that way
>>431420678Depends. Unless you're reading something like Canvas 2 where the heroine's route is within the common route. If I'm rereading a VN then maybe not unless I like the common route like Princess Evangile. If not then straight to a heroine's route.
