The only rod you really need outside of grandamster's is quicken. You can take your favorite-metamagicked spells and then make them quickened at zero spell level increase. Using quicken metamagic is prohibitively expensive in terms of spell level increase, so you use the rod. And since you can't use two rods simultaneously, this massively devalues all other rods except grandamster's.

So, I enjoyed HoMM3. Were the follow-ups really as unplayable as people say? I wouldn't mind something more along those lines, but I'm done with homm3. I didn't really get into Age of Empires 2 which I've also heard is a classic. It was fine, just didn't love it. I've played a lot of civ5 and civ6, though it gives me bad feelings to play for some reason.
