Are there any Diablo clone devs displaying character armours in the style of Diablo 1/Fallout?
As in, character appearance is determined by armor 'type' (light, medium, heavy for example) rather than paper dolling each item onto the character.
I find this makes a way more kino character sprites since paperdolling can create weird combos and players left to their own creative devices will make them butt naked with a watermelon head.
This design choice will no doubt get flak in 2023 but how many armor appearance types do you think a game needs?
I'm aiming for at least 3, hopefully 6 since there isn't really a limit technologically on how many sprites I can include. Depending on how difficult it becomes maybe more or less. Anyone orblets using a similar system?

One. As long as it looks good and is well done. Obviously more are better if it stays consistent and consistently good/well done aswell.
As for the Armortype/Paper dolling Thing, paperdolling obviously is better as it offers more variety and customization options, but only if you can make good and fitting Sprites that will look good in every possible combination. That gets harder and harder the more Armorpieces you have tho, so having multiples share the same Look is a valid Approach. Still, both depend on the Artist making sure all the possible Options look good with each other. If I'm wearing light helmet, medium Boots and Heavy Armor, it needs to look good, same as when its full Paperdolling and I'm wearing Onion Helmet, Berserker Armor, Pegasus Boots, Fairy mantle and whatever else you have in your Game combined. So I'd say go with however many Options you can make look good together, and it'll be fine. Don't force any extra Options just because you think your Game needs those extra Pieces if you can't match them together with the Rest well. If the Game doesn't have a certain Customization Option, thats fine, but if it looks bad, then I'll complain.

Anybody know any good papers on procedural level generation? I wanted to make something with either Wolf3D or Doom style graphics/levels. It would be cool if the levels weren't just tile based blocky walls, but non-orthogonal or 3 dimensional walls too.

It's a question to decide what button does what.
Buttons are in hierarchy of use, a platformer has jump on 1, a shooter has shoot etc etc
While m/k, k only and even arcade stick have their buttons written in stone, pad is more fluid about that.
For ex, a platformer with jump on square it would be a wtf for almost everyone; But elder scrolls/Fallout has jump on triangle, and everybody it's fine with that.

But I think an improvement would be to focus on how many competitive armor types there are. Diablo, for instance, had everyone running around in heavy armor at the end, so maybe their efforts would've been better spent making several heavy armor types than having light and medium that you're never gonna see again once you get past the caves.

It's not really a Toga with the Arm being seperate, but the Concept Art clearly has that seperated into a Sleeve instead of the classic throwover End of Cloth, so I'm going with that. I don't usually model any Folds, but I figured might aswell, since its pretty Featureless otherwise, and such a big Part of the Model. Also with the Flesh, the Spikes and the Skeleton, it doesn't bloat the Triscount too much, it's way too high already anyway. I'll add a second collapsed version in aswell, but I'll assume it'll look quite worse then this. Sorry.
Texture is obviously just a super quick Blockout to get a better Feel for the flow of Cloth on this, aswell as for the Colors. I'll be painting this in Greyscale, to try some Stuff out, you can't stop me from at least trying to add some Form of Features to it, even if I can't do7you don't want any Details.

Wolf3D works for the procgen style, but Doom would not. 50% of Doom's greatness comes from the amazing handcrafted levels. Doom 2 is proof because its stock levels are shit and the game suffers massively because of it. That said, I don't know the answer to your question.

It's not really low Poly, the whole Thing has 3795 Tris, probably will end up just above 4k when I add the Crown. Robe itself has 425 Tris.
It's really just an 8 sides Cylinder, with another one connected for the Arm. Roughed up the Edge on the Arm cylinder, added some Loopcuts along the Fold-flow, and moved those out a bit to create the Ridges. Then cut a hole into the Shoulder and removed the Triangle on the upper-left, and finally filled those in with an indent to have less Backfaces.
Not necessarily in that order, I went Cylinder>Arm>connect>Rough>removeBigArea>Fill-in>Add Folds>Remove Shoulderhole. And in the End a lot of fiddling and adjusting obviously. Will receive some extra Adjustment once the Texture is further along to get the Ridges to line up with the Colors better.

I don't think your choice of algorithm is going to solve that problem. This sounds more like something you can tweak as part of your personal implementation, once you've got the basics working.

Like, instead of generating ten blocky rooms and stitching them together orthogonally, nothing stops you from stitching them together at unusual angles. Hell, even if you generate all your rooms on a grid, those rooms can still be prefabs that contain handcrafted unusual geometry inside, for example.

Trackmania moved the speedometer to be on the back of the car and it improved readability because your eyes don't need to stray as far to read your speed.
Splatoon puts your ink-gauge on your back and nobody has a problem with it. Your inkling/octoling will become partially transparent to keep your ink tank visible, and a 2D ui gauge will appear if you're submerged.

The best place to start is by handcrafting levels and use those as the basis for your procedural levels, one way or another. WFC is one way to do that. It works for levels that can be boiled down to 2D arrays of a finite set of values (sprites), so would work very well for Wolf3D or Doom style levels. I imagine you could extend it to 3D on the same principles.

You could build basic orthogonal levels and dress them up with rounded corners or reshaped walls afterward.

Why do you want procedural levels? How will you use them? Really, the way you approach procedural generation needs to be tailored to your game.

Trackmania did not move the speedometer at all, it's still in your bottom right. They just added one on the license plate area so you have two. The one in the bottom right is left because sure enough it's hardly possibly to get a good reading on that one at all times.

Thank you, I'll leave the Textures and Modelpart seperate in the blend/Folder, so you can adjust them as you want and merge them yourself then. I'll still have to bake the Textures together into one, but I'll give you those aswell on a copy of the Model then, its no real work after all. It might destroy some Details tho, currently I'm using a 1k for the Flesh, Bones and Cloth each, and I want to bake them together into a single 1k Texture. Hopefully it just doesn't loose too much, if it does, I'll bake it into a 2k/4k aswell, and of course clean up where I can.

Yes, the whole Thing is painted in Blender. I originally wanted to try out ArmorPaint for this, but I forgot. And I didn't like it all that much from when I tried out a bit of painting on the Gun, but I think that may have just me not being used to a new Program.
Here's the Greyscale Texture of the Toga itself, just using SmartUV Unwrap since I'll bake them together later anyway so the Layout doesn't matter. The Color and Alpha ones are really simple, just some big Blobs of Color/Erased Alpha, then smoothed out and smudged a little, then multiplied with this Textures Color/Alpha.

Very good, there's some great moments. My suggestions:

The first shot should show the fairy getting eaten, not running away and escaping. That way, you have action and consequence set up perfectly. Getting eaten is also a unique and funny thing that will grab attention right away.

The shot with some tutorial screens should be cut. Can't really read it, doesn't serve a purpose here.

Zoom in more. You're doing it some, but what's happening should be framed more thoughtfully. The very last shot, for instance, should be like 2x closer so you can see the expression on the fairies face. Make a fake level so the toads are closer I'd you have to. Go through and zoom in more shots as much as possible, and fake whatever you have to to accomplish that.

As someone who hates most trailers with the burning rage of 1000 suns, there's 2 problems I have with it.

Firstly it's not telling enough about the gameplay, it leaves me wondering what the concrete objective of the game is. It should show a clip of a level being completed or something.

Secondly it doesn't show any particularly interesting looking levels so it doesn't give me the impression that the game's content is good. Maybe that's just a result from the game being unfinished though (?).

Also, there should be a sound effect at then end when the game title pops up.

Visually and thematically it's attractive though, and the trailer gets right into the gameplay which is good.

I rewrote the ship alignment controls. Was previously based on pure math (harmonic oscillator with critical damping). But that allows too little control. Rewrote it with something custom, which ticks all the boxes: No overswinging when reaching target angle; smooth start and end; no jerky direction change on massive input changes; fine-tuned control by time and angle-based variables.

Also re the outline discussion: I nuked outlines completely. Even high-end implementations suffer from limitations such as visibility through occlusion and depth issues. Not worth it, especially with the necessary complexity (extra shaders, framebuffers etc).

In general, good progress today. Tell me about demo day: Do I just pack together a little demo to zoom around? How complete should it be? I should probably have a name by then? How big is exposure - normies or just 4ch?

Apparently i had a bug that made sure all enemies are pulled from the data for level 1. Now goblinos in deeper levels have a slight color variation and they are stronger. I also doubled some room generation number so theres shorter corridors and more rectangles filled with green meanies.

Small progress! Did mace attacks! Now I just need to figure out a way to do trails for boomerangs and arrow.

And animals when used in religions are, I think, not typically thought of as actual animals, but representations, abstractions and metaphors, or as representations for what amounts to human tribes.
