I've been adding props and stuff to my game. I wanna add collectables that give the player additional score points but I can't decide what kind of item I should use. The only thing I can think of is cash but I want something different. I'd really appreciate some suggestions and ideas. For reference I'm gonna add some cyber bunnies as collectables as well but they're special collectables, the one I want to add is a generic type of collectable that give small amounts of score.

Where do you guys get your inspiration for coom games?
Today while taking a break from amateur game development, I was walking through the shopping centre and walked past a girl with the largest breasts I have ever seen IRL. It reminded me of when you scale something disproportionately large in a 3d modeller while developing models for an indie video game. Like each one was double the size of my head. She was a ginger and not that attractive in the face but who cares, the tits were glorious. God is the master of physics, if only PhysX or an equivalent could match the sway of her breasts IRL, but in real time during a 3d application. I winced in pain for I would never know the beauty of her giant breasts in person. I continued walking and did some shopping then when walking to the car, a girl with very nice child bearing hips checked me out. It distracted me from going over some plans for my amateur video game, written in both C# and C++. Once again I winced in pain because I would never know the luxury of her wide ass, I would never know if she has an innie or outie pussy, never see the puffiness of her areola - I could not just outsource to a contractor that would model as I have done before for my amateur video game I am developing.

So I continued to my car to get home to continue developing, and got into it with my wife that I had eaten out and fucked this morning. Monogamy sucks, its like grinding on the same programming question that is specifically for your amateur video game but getting nowhere.

I hope you have enjoyed my post about amateur game development, and where you can seek sources of inspiration for your design process IRL as this anecdote details as fellow indie video game developers.

40 to 60 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 350 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 50 games a day, 1500 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

MOSSAD/CIA brainwashing.
These publicly-funded agencies want to create a generation of hateful and reactionary white domestic terrorists, so they can associate any right-wing movements and ideologies with these deliberately fabricated domestic terrorist groups.
You already see it with anti gun control groups.

how would you organize an enemy movepool that decides the next move according to multiple factors (like turn and hp threshold)?
what i have in mind is:
>put all the possible attacks in an array
>have one dictionary for each factor, mapping the value of that factor to a move index. for example if you want the enemy to start the combat with a certain move you insert the key 1 in the turn dictionary
>an entry in such a dictionary optionally has another move index, which fixes the next move too

How many hours per day do you guys spend working on your games?

I used to only do gamedev as a hobby for less than 30 minutes per day, but I'm taking it more seriously now, so I've increased my work time to 6+ hours, and I can really feel the mental exhaustion kicking in.

Write down a list of things to do.
Break it down into small chunks.
Have 2-3 chunks on the go at once max, so you can switch between to keep things fresh and interesting.

Yes technically the only current use for fire weapons is against enemies. However, you could potentially (and hopefully ACCIDENTALLY) set friends on fire. In which case bringing a fire extinguisher is not a bad idea.

And because it doesn't only put out fires it could potentially replace a jetpack or some other flight/movement-based equipment.

It's not a "muscle" per se, but synapses do strengthen from use.

A practical example (albeit very simplified and not entirely scientifically accurate) would be someone who knew a written language inside and out, but when speaking it sounds halted. This is because the synapses required for efficient transfer of spoken words aren't properly strengthened.

Making a game for mass appeal is a fools errand. Making a game that's only for players who self-select into your target demographic is how you get those 99% review scores. People take one look at Stardew Valley or Rimworld and immediately know whether it's a game they'll like so only people who are predisposed to liking the game will buy it and leave a review. People who don't like your game will move on and leave your perfect review score untainted.

Yea, this is definitely true, but I'd say it's held back a lot more by Remi than Juan. Remi closes Windows issues "Because I use Linux". Literally unsolved bugs that make the engine incredibly unprofessional are closed down because Remi doesn't use Windows.
There's even examples of people begging them to not close the issue "if Godot wants to be taken seriously as a game engine."

Honestly Godot is garbage, but less garbage than all the other engines for 2D. If 4.0 doesn't bring Godot into the 3D world, it's over for them the moment a real 2D engine comes on the scene.

If my first game is successful and JAI is finally released, I might make or hire someone to make a 2D engine using JAI. Actually make it good and have it not support 3D whatsoever. I'd love to support both to allow for "2D in 3D", but the moment you start supporting 3D is the moment everyone contributing to the engine starts becoming a raging idiot hyper focused on taking down Unity (and failing) while all the 2D features suffer and get ignored.

Juan's greatest failing is in trying to make Godot a 3D competitor to Unreal/Unity. If he had focused everything on 2D and told the community to do so, it would be the de-facto 2D engine. Still would be held back by "That's just silly" idiocy and "But I don't use Windows" Remi Ridiculous, but whatever.
>>
>>339102784
>You know you're playing a Unity game when you see the GC microstutter, constant reprojection, and CPU bottlenecking.
I can literally tell if a game uses Unity within seconds of loading it. And I don't mean because of the Unity splashscreen or the embarrassingly amateur resolution/input popup.

Almost all Unity games have a notoriously awful feel for them. That's in ADDITION to their horrific performance paired with lackluster graphics.
>>
>>339104202
>Godot is over the monent a real 2D engine comes on the scene.

Thanks, but I doubt this ever happens. Anyone stupid enough to donate that much money to a kickstarter is either so rich they see $10k like it's $0.10 cents or they're 100% all-in on the simping and literally jerk off as they get their plane tickets to meet the holy developers who they godify.

Little do people know that 99% of gamedevs are utter garbage. Most indies are so clueless as to what makes a great game that they ruin their own franchises after it was clear they accidentally happened upon a semi-good original first game. Indie and AAA gamedevs are truly totally clueless and 99% are grossly incompetent at their specialized job.

Gamedevs are 99% garbage. Gamers are right to demonify them because they're almost all trash.

The ones who are "highly respected" in the industry are people like Mark Jacobs and Mike Sellers. The former is a massive fraud by matter-of-fact. When actually given the chance to make a dream MMORPG, he squandered it entirely. He had the money, the team, the experience, and everything. Turned out he didn't have the experience and someone else made DAoC. Mike Sellers is some weirdo redditor who literally claims credit for a ton of semi-successful games but isn't actually found in ANY of the credits. He claims to have been the lead designer for Ultima Online (that's Raph Koster, Starr Long, and Richard Garriott) and claims to have worked on Realm of the Mad God - which is the only one apparently true BUT he is only responsible for being part of the company which purchased it really late and then added Microtransactions. He then goes to Quora and Reddit to yell at gamers and ethical gamedevs (0.1%of all gamedevs) about how Microtransactions are actually great.

I still believe in Richard Garriott, but I really shouldn't. He flopped Shroud of the Avatar so bad, it's embarassing. However he actually made a shit ton of great games, ranging from the entire Ultima Series, Tabula Rasa (which was actually a good game and highly profitable), and Ultima Online. I assume Shroud of the Avatar had someone else running the show or something.

Going to drop this redpill before I close the thread and start my 16 hour work day: Unity is the best engine and there's no comparison. It has the best performance. Because to learn well requires great effort on the part of the learner. A willingness to practice the skills as you learn them and commit things to memory. Always be sure to get good sleep, and the learning process will be substantially easier. You literally level up when you go to sleep. Skills that were difficult to learn at first will become noticeably easier to do the next day after having good sleep.
Also, I really like the picture. Prerendered stuff like that is pure soul, at least if you're were playing video games in the 90s and 2000s.

Stop asking people to test this and actually make some progress. Also here's a tip: people are more likely to respond if your game doesn't look like shit.

Fix the aspect ratio, everything looks terrible.
Given that you're showing this to people, at least use some placeholder sprites, too.
Fix the controls you've listed on the itch.io page, but more importantly, make them accessible in game. And tell the player what buttons to press to start your game, currently it's a confusing mess. If a menu item doesn't work, grey it out.
Explain what your pickups do somewhere, and indicate how long they last.
Don't make "space" reset your game, make it a key your player isn't going to instinctively or accidentally press.
Change your annoying sfx, or at least modulate them.

You totally have something here, it feels nice to control and it's a tried and true style. Now stop begging people to check it out, when there's fuck all to check out. Just like make game.

I don't understand. If it doesn't function like wallmaster, it's not a clone. If it does, it is.

Besides that, it's a hand, and living hands have been done to death. You're kinda limited in what you can do in the first place, let alone what you can do to be unique with it. I vote you make it scramble up to the player and flick them like they're a bug, though.

if your first language is C++, then yes if they properly understand C++ and don't have problems with it, then game dev is relatively simple because the only way to keep your sanity is by making things simple, and 2D games are still complicated beasts that can span 50,000+LoC (there are unreal / unity games that are made with less, because they can just lego-piece add-ons).

I made a character with animations in Blender, and for some attacking animations, the model moves forward by the end. In Unity, this results in the player model stepping outside of its hitbox, then suddenly snapping back into it when it returns to the idle animation. There are some options within Unity for 'applying root motion', but they don't seem to be working for me; there are FAR fewer options in my window than there should be according to the documentation, and enabling what options I do have is making my model rotate in bizarre ways and doesn't even fix the 'snapping' problem.

What I want to have happen is:
>Script has references to the root GameObject,
>its Character Controller (to move it, since I've heard bad things about trying to directly set the Transform position of a GameObject that has a Character Controller component),
>the Transform of the player model (the child of the root GameObject that's the parent of all armature bones), and
>the Transform of a specifically tracked bone (usually Hips)

>When entering an animation state (i.e. as soon as this state in the Animator sets bone positions according to its animation clip for the first time), to cancel out whether an animation starts off-center,
>>Get the difference in XZ position of the tracked bone and the center of the root GameObject
>>Then move the player model Transform 'backwards' by that distance, centering the tracked bone in the middle of the root GameObject

>Then, each time the animation updates bone positions, before the frame is drawn,
>>Get the difference in XZ position of that tracked bone and the root GameObject
>>Move the root GameObject 'forward' by that difference in position, to move the hit box with the tracked bone
>>Then move the player model Transform 'backward' by that difference in position, to keep the tracked bone in the middle of the hit box

>Then, when exiting the animation state, reset the position of the player model to the root GameObject

Anyone have ideas?

Any advice on where to look? I just keep finding things that link back to the documentation page that, as I mentioned, shows way more options for root motion than actually shows up for me, even if I duplicate animations to make them editable (e.g. I don't get a 'Back Into Pose' checkbox anywhere, I can't limit things to the XZ plane or Y axis, etc.). Also, the root motion stuff doesn't seem to allow being set for individual animations; I want SOME animations to move the character with the Hips bone, but not all of them. If I set a 'Root Motion Node' for one animation in the import settings, it gets set for all of them. Also, in the Animator component, 'Apply Root Motion' is just a single checkbox with no options for configuring it for individual animations. I could get around all this by importing the FBX with the Root Motion Node set, duplicating the animations I want to be able to move my character, then importing the FBX without the Root Motion Node set, but that's clunky as fuck.

That's why I've been pursuing trying to implement this via a StateMachineBehavior script, which I can then just attach to states in the Animator for the animations I want to be able to move my character, which would be the most convenient option. However, I think there are weird conflicts in the timing between when the functions in the StateMachineBehavior is called and when the player model moves; either the player model tries to hold still but still shifts a little bit due to imprecision somewhere, or it rockets off so fast that Unity almost instantly throws an error over it being too far away from the origin. I can't seem to get a win anywhere.

Fuck, is this what's going to make me have to switch from Unity to something else?

Or should I just, for any animations where I want the animation to take control of my character, disable the Character Controller? That would let me set the root GameObject Transform directly, but that seems like applying a really ugly bandaid that will only cause me more problems down the line.

well, let me define waste of time:
"i just want something to happen, i don't care what it is"
while "not a waste of time" means:
"i want something special, something new, something challenging"

e.g. Kenshi was something special, cause there was nothing like it before
but when i see people playing shooters and mmorpgs, moba's, battle royale games and maybe even racing games, it kinda seems like people don't want anything new or exciting. all they want is just an easy waste of time, where you never encounter anything unfamiliar.

Everyone I've ever met who does guitar is such a lame boring dull normie, it's just sad.
Although those who play the bass guitar are a bit better, more humble, but kindof edgelordy bc they don't play the guitar. Meanwhile ukelele players are chill even though they don't play guitar.

I've read this before many times, but I don't think it's true. It matters though because GPU driver manufacturers are extremely incompetent and require (but no longer require?) exclusive fullscreen for support of the very features they use to market to everyone.
>SLI / CROSSFIRE
This was never really a thing. Piece of shit Nvidia/AMD I fucking hate you.
>FreeSync
I remember when I got this, but it didn't work when not in exclusive fullscreen AND didn't work with Crossfire. So many fucking caveats, it's no wonder no one ever adopted this shitty implementation gimmick.
>Gamedevs
I hate these even more. Always making games which, even on the most cutting edge hardware 4 years after the fact, runs like dogshit. Then they pair this with manufacturers with 144hz monitors which are unobtainable for anything other than competently programmed games... it's fucking...ERGH!
>2D games though?
Nope. Fucking indie devs are so shitty.
Many lock framerates, force bullshit at the hardware level (or like Jason Roher at least try like fascist lunatics hellbent on destroying the industry by appealing to mentally damaged normies), or even worse - have CPU bound games bc their Unity scripts are so poorly programmed that...ergh...
I fucking loathe gamedevs so much.
>Unity programmers

SLI / CROSSFIRE is the gimmick, not Adaptive Sync (which is awesome).

Bitch mother yelled at me again about being lazy and "playing games all day". I don't play all day, only 3-4 hours. The rest of that time is spent watching youtube.
I'll make a game and make money and then tell her to go fuck herself.
I'm gonna be a rich chad just like Toby and Scott.
I'm not crying. You're crying, fucking whore. And even if I was, they wouldn't be tears of sadness, but tears of joy. Joy because I fucking won. And I am going to win.
Lets do this.
I'm gonna have a thought provoking master piece that makes waves in the industry for the years to come and obsessive superfans that worship my craft.

Use the classics as a model of inspiration but don't fall for "muh nostalgia" bait and make some shitty retro graphics gimmick. Make the actual game a good one, and do your best with the presentation to make it look good.

Doesn't have to be AAA or anything but don't make the graphics ugly on purpose either to be "ironic." That shit is fuckin cliche

YESYESYES I FIGURED IT OUT

God I feel fucking great. Finally solving a coding problem like this releases so much tension! It works exactly how I wanted it to: For any animation that I want to have move the character, I just slap the StateMachineBehavior script I wrote onto the relevant node in the Animator, and boom, it just works. The only other thing I need is to put a really basic script (it just stores references to the character controller and certain transforms, so that I don't have to look them up at runtime) on the character, which is easy.

I'm so glad I managed to make my solution work. No having to duplicate animations to make them editable, no hard-coding any movement values unless I want to (e.g. for dodging and the like, since I want to be able to modify how far a dodge travels and such by changing numbers rather than having to modify the animations in Blender), nothing specific to the playable character (so I can put the exact same solution on enemies or monsters with no issue), and it doesn't even involve disabling the CharacterController! I still get the CharacterController goodness of handling collision and whatnot for me!

Today is such a blessed day.

i see a more-recent gamestate than i would have otherwise, which both feels smoother and allows me to interact with the game at an inherently lower latency than before, and there are edge cases with OS or game execution stutter or even simple tick-frame-monitor refresh-period aliasing where this means i avoid delaying the output of a frame unnecessarily

I did some googling and found this thread
https://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=8282
to sum it up loosely:
1. in DX12 games there really, truly isn't. BUT that's a good thing as they actually fixed how borderless fullscreen works and as long as no pop-ups like the volume slider are active you get the same low input lag you used to have in true fullscreen games?! (page 3)
2. every other game will also be forced into borderless window mode but it's unclear if that is a problem or not. it's also hard to measure because of other factors muddying the water. there's talk of differences between drivers and games and no objective data about any of it. disabling the so-called fullscreen "optimizations" and various registry changes are mentioned but again, no data to confirm that any of it is more than placebo or will work for every game. hypothetically if you could force exclusive mode and prove that you did, you'd still have to prove that it's beneficial. it seems just as likely that forcing an unsupported mode in an OS a game was never tested for would lead to unintended behavior that makes input lag worse.
>>
>>339149107
my walking simulator will run at 60fps, deal with it

, and it tells me to create a function inside the Enemy Blueprint, and call it on the Task to update the player move speed. Thing is I can't make this fucking function to show up in the Task context in any way. The page tells me to re-compile the Enemy blueprint first, but I've done that to no avail.

A game which actively encourages bad players to uninstall.
Die too many times or take too long, and you get forced into a condescendingly simple and cartoonish "training level" that you have to successfully complete over and over.
"Achievements" for playing particularly badly, dying in stupid ways, etc.

cause it's made by MS and only for Win 10. if their intent for Win 10 is that everything is subjugated to the Windows "compositor" then it's natural that they would force its use in DX12. but if they succeeded with optimizing it so it only activates when actually necessary (when there is more to display than the game) then it would be okay. I wouldn't be alarmed about any of this if it wasn't Microsoft we're talking about. Microsoft being involved means bugs will never be fixed and new ones will be introduced.

One thing that helps me to be creative is to ask why a character is in the world to begin with.

Why does your protagonist even need to "figure shit out?" Is he not from there? If he's from there and you're just doing this for the benefit of the player, there are all sorts of subtle ways to introduce the player to the world without that.

Sounds comfy af m8. Have you comsidered taking your baby girl to, Idk, an expensive school? I remember being surrounded by retards during my school years and i think it was a waste of talent, maybe life would have been easier if I got to a neater school or simply homsechooled, idk.

Are you talking about the problem where everything looks stuttery if you run physics on a fixed timestep?
I'm pretty sure that's possible to fix in gdscript, I will attempt it some time this month.
>>339148839
higher fps noticeably reduces latency, even at fps > the monitor refresh rate. It's very important for competitive shooters.

Women are literally some of the most talented programmers in the world. Just look at all the modern tech company demographics. Most of them weren't born as women though.

Why is game dev just a glorified fetch quest...

I would say she got carried by him, not vice versa. I'm not a fan of DDLC, but the story has the shock factor and entry-level meta elements that zoomers love. Also, most normal people probably haven't seen Higurashi or yandere anime.

>Games do not look or feel better at a higher framera
Found the mentally retarded poorfag who has never owned a monitor with a refresh rate higher than 60hz.
>>
>>339146805
The only reason he doesn't value it is because he is either blind, retarded, too dim to even try to see the difference, or has no concept of "smooth" or "immersion" because he has some intellectual disability.
>>339148728
See here, where anon thinks it's "special eyes" to be able to detect beyond 60fps, when literally even totally blind normies can tell a big difference. kek
>>
>>339149674
He is angry bc his cognitive disability doesn't allow him to appreciate what 99% of gamers could see.
Most likely he's a 12 year old kid who is raging and seething hard bc mom won't buy him a 144hz monitor or he's a full retarded 30-something with a 144hz monitor but runs it at 60hz lmao

jfc are you idiots really arguing about framerate right now we still havent figured out if unity is better than godot
>>
>>339173635
we already know unity is superior to godot. The question is if godot is superior to rpgmaker and the answer is a resounding no.
