the downside is that they own a percent of your hard work
there's no way of insuring that they will do what they claim

publishers hit up multiple people all the time and try to gut you like a fishy
its also very hard to nail down the specifics because one publisher has a different contract then another

i think it's just shit animators, really. this guy still moves like a human, he's just been autistically drilling the motions over and over for peak precision, but his movements still convey weight and his body physically reacts to the force of firing his weapon. it's subtle nuances that are completely erased when you just select all your frames and hit that Elastic interpolation

Guys I need some help figuring something out with Unity's animator but I don't know in wich direction I should go for research or hints.
I'd like to recreate a customizable combo ala God Hand or Kenka Bancho where the player can be able to pick wich attack will go on wich input.

How can I do that? I certainly can't predict/plan every possible combinations.
I was thinking maybe overriding the animation clip in the combo but I don't find anything on overriding animations at runtime.
I was also thinking about putting every animations in a state and manage all that by script with Id's and other variables so I could blend them better together but I'm not sure about that either.

Any help please or resources on that or even example of something close to that?
>>
>>331085120
there's only a set amount of combinations in godhand despite seeming like alot
i think your overcomplicating it try a simpler approach
>>
>>331085120
unity is pretty shit but you gotta be able to play arbitrary animations from code, right? just set up an input queue and play the right animation at the end of the previous one
>>
>>331085120
You can just crossfade any state to any other state in a c# script, there's no need to manually connect states.
>>
>>331083569
>>331083661
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzeGGkYZ8iY
I agree, compare them to those animations from 10 years ago. While they kept a stylistic approach, they still has enough weight without it looking like some spastic is reloading(which is to be expected when supposedly super secret task force members are reloading their weapons).
>>
>>331085409
> simpler approach?
I can't find any
> there's only a set amount of combinations in godhand
I don't remember that. I have the feeling that you could pretty much put any move on the square input and have like a shit ton of different combinations.
I might be wrong, I didn't play the game for a very long time.

You need a simple 10-30 second clip showcasing the highest point of your game, and the format should be "I spent x years making this y game with my friend", while preferably putting the title in.

>did you sleep well?

I'm at a stage where I have to start coding non-gameplay stuff that isn't so fun like menus, saving, stat tracking. Still really happy with my progress though.

Well I already kind of decomposed the gameplay by finding out how invulnerability frames work, the AI combos and how they punish or reward you, how Gene moves and shit.
But on this specific part of the gameplay, I don't know how to replicate it with Unity and its animation controller.
I'm still a beginner/intermediate with Unity and people are rarely manipulation animation trough code so finding some info on that is fucking hard.
Or the shit you find is misleading.

>>331085120

In the animator add all the attack animations.
Then add a trigger for each one.
Then make them all transition from any state when the trigger is active.

Now all you really need is a list of strings. Each string is the corresponding trigger that'll play the animation.
You just activate the trigger when the player presses a button, then when that attack ends you go to the next string in the list until the last one.

Picture related is how I do it. I can have 100 hit long combos with animations in any order by adding to a list. The only difference for you is allowing the player to add/remove attacks from this list.

That second part however will be a lot more complicated because you'll want a lot of data rather than just a string to trigger an animation.
You'll probably want to have how long the animation is, when the player can trigger the next animation and how long after the attack ends the player has to put in another input before the combo resets.

>>
>>331086709
Yes, I have a lead jab followed by a kick that i put in there as a prototype attack.
I mean basic movement and the hitboxes are done, the basic AI too, the events are set up and the player and AI can deal and receive damage.
Now I'm stuck on this matter since the rest is secundary

For what you want, this is pretty much the only way of handling it. Maybe there will be some minor differences between solutions made by different people, but the basics are the same.
A list of attacks that hold various data (damage, animation and so on) and something that loops through them when the player presses a button.

I'm not really sure what is "unoptimized" about this.

And yes, if you want to play an animation you add it to the animator. Whether you manually do it, or do it through code makes no difference. At the end of the day that animation is part of the animator.
Complex games with lots of animations will simply have large numbers of animations in the animator. That is just how it works. It's like trying to go swimming without getting wet or something. If you go in the water you will get wet, just like if you use a lot of animations the animator will have lots of animations in it.

Picture related. It's not mine, it's just a random example from google. It could be organized better but regardless of how neat it's made to look, it'll still have all those animations.
This is just what to expect for the type of game you want to make.

I'm absolutely stumped. I've been trying to create animations similar to what you see in disgaea
(see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqInSQhZAqQ&t=89s ) with my game being a turn-based srpg just like it but I have no fucking clue how to do so.
I had finally gotten Unity timeline sorta working how I wanted and had animations looking sorta like that, but now I'm encountering the problem that comes with trying to use timeline with new instantiated objects since it is a huge pain to try and re-bind all the components at run-time

Do you guys know of a better way to do this or am I going to have to make a whole new system myself? D:

The whole point of an enum is that it's an int with a name. So that you can use it and understand what it represents instead of filling your code with a bunch of numbers and having to refer back to documentation to figure out what those numbers mean.
>>
>>331093559
Are you literally not reading the thing you're posting? You're actually throwing a tantrum about 'fucker i just want the chars I know they're in that string why can't I just call them chars'.

It's protected so that you don't do stupid shit. That's why you have to explicitly tell the engine 'treat this as an int' in the same respect you have to tell it 'treat this string as an array of chars'.

>>331093701
The essential difference is implicit is 'you trust the compiler' and have a type of value that has an obvious reference-preserving convert and explicit is 'you tell the compiler you know more than it and to trust you'.

>>
>>331094005
I do understand that, I'm not really going for that sort of complexity. My bad since I didn't explain myself well.

What I'm primarily trying to achieve is the idea of animations that can:
- set the correct sprite
- move the object around if needed
- instantiate the correct visual effects in the correct position(s)
- move said effects around if needed
- time everything so it flows correctly
- Most importantly, be able to use this with any characters in combat at runtime

The current method I was attempting to do was creating unity timeline animations and setting them onto the prefab characters when needed, but I'm encountering a problem with bindings being a pain to assign at runtime. So for me the problem is just getting these animations working at runtime

The thing I'm wondering is if there is either a better way to use timeline for said style of animations, or there is another more straight-forward/better way to do this?

AAA usually doesn't use character creators. They sculpt them in zbrush. Especially monsters.

And substance painter/designer speed things up but it has a very limited amount of default materials. You still have to design 99% of the materials yourself and then paint them to your mesh.

And they sure as shit don't use mixamo lol. They can afford to do proper mocap.

I bet you think you have better optimization strategies than your compiler too, don't you?

Just use a cast. That's literally what casts are for. They're for the thing you're whining about. They're there as guard-rails so you don't do stupid shit like multiplying enums or grabbing chars from strings.

If you don't want to respect that things are using a container, then don't use a fucking container I guess? But complaining that you're having to 'take things out of the container' that you explicitly put them in is leagues stupider than the most nitpicky bullshit of 'well acshually strings are just char-arrays anyway so the engine should just respect me when i tell it to give me a char from a string because I, unlike the engine and compiler, actually know how it works'.

Shit at math and shit at art = don't even try

;_;
>>
>>331094560
you literally just don't understand what you're reading. The only reason an enum could be boxed is if it's a value type to begin with. The Enum class exists specifically to box the enum value type. This is boxing:
Enum value = (Enum)myEnum.whatever;
"value" becomes a reference to a boxed enum. Converting from capital-E Enum back to the value type would be unboxing. Converting the value type to another value type does not box or unbox anything.
I'd appreciate it if you stop parading around your ignorance—you're just making the threads harder for those of us who know what they're doing to give proper advice.

im using hexagons for the natural-"biggerthanman" ones and squares for the "human" type.
bees were the main inspiration for the hexagon shape. the most efficient design that only has reproduction and feeding in its core and its very similar to a circle.
i cant find many squares in nature except when it comes to minerals so im taking it for humans. something that's rare but efficient in the eyes of those who use it. houses and most man-made stuff is square.

Once again, boxing is converting a value type to a reference type. The code in question:
return (int) (ValueType) value;
converts the enum to a class, ValueType, which boxes the value, and then to an int which unboxes the value producing garbage. Converting the enum directly to an int produces no garbage whatsoever.

Can you get an honest opinion from any engine's cult? When people are obsessed with their tool they will try to convince you it's the best no matter what it takes. Honestly the only way to really know is to look at the features available in the engines, and try engines you're interested in.
Of course you're not gonna get a perfect sense of the engine after using it for a week but if you hate using a tool after a week then you're not gonna like using it for several years of game development.

You sound like you're looking for excuses to not make a game.

The game engine hardly matters if what you want to make is a game all by yourself.

1MA devs should stick to simple games, otherwise they'll burn themselves and never finish. Scope creep is real. I got burnt myself one too many times.

You should look at an engine from an objective point of view. Does the engine satisfy your game's needs? Then its good enough.

I myself am using Godot and honestly I don't care what the devs think, or what their views are regarding the latest trend. If the engine checks all the needs my game requires, then it's good enough.
>>
>>331096470
Your problem is thinking that maths is intuition.

It's like language. You can only 'intuit' once you've learned so much of the language that you 'know its rules and ebb and flow'.

If you want to do complex maths the only thing to do is to either learn by doing or just actually go find a maths course and get in it to be taught it.

I wouldn't make a game using complex maths until I knew how to use them though. That's why I stay the hell away from Quaternions and only use Euler.

This was pretty common back in the day but not so much anymore. PBR has made it difficult to just rip your textures off google images because they have too much ambient lighting built in. IT's usually faster to make them in Substance Designer for a clean albedo.

A lot of people espousing opinions here today that are just incorrect and are self-evidently incorrect if you've spent any time working in 3d and a modern engine.

>>331097587
The class System.Enum stores a boxed value. This is different from the enum you declare which is a value type. When you declare an enum it is put on the stack like all other value types. If you cast that value to a class, it gets turned into a reference type which needs to be taken off the stack and put on the heap. This is why boxing is expensive. When converting between value types, nothing is needed to be removed from the stack. If all enums contained boxed values, they would be reference types and be allocated onto the heap every time they are used which would be a huge disaster and nobody would ever use them.

I'm making a game in another engine rn. But I had a really really bad experience picking up tools in the past. I won't name em but imagine your're working on your game (weeks before release) and finds out that there's a huge memory leak problem with the engine's tilemap component.

My example is not fair btw. I was using an obscure tool but you guys get my point. Imagine wait for a release to see that bug being fixed (or not)
>just fix it yourself
no u

I need a tool that already proves that can deliver good games / projects. I tested unity but I can't stand that workflow and it doesn't run ok on my old laptop (I have a pc as well but I like to dev everywhere).

Anyway, I'll test godot. Thanks.
My current engine is "ok". But It lacks a lot of good built-in features that I've seen in godot so that's the reason for the switch.

Fixed the problem I was having with trajectory.

I was using move_and_collide to check for collision and just setting the position of the projectile separately to the current point on the trajectory, running a collision check every time I moved. Instead what I should have been doing was converting the trajectory to a direction/momentum and passing that to move_and_collide(). move_and_collide() does predict collision but because I was calculating the collision separately it wasn't working properly.

Now on to trajectory correction and external forces.

Gonna teach all y'all the secret of art.

Everything is just simple shapes (squares, circles, triangles) and lines.

That is it. It's that easy.

All you need to do is be able to look at something and see the shapes/lines. Once you can do this you just got to put those shapes/lines on a canvas.
It is THAT easy but most people can't even look at something properly. No really, this is factually true. Most people look at something and the mental image they have of it does not match the actual thing they looked at. Details, especially shapes will be wrong and so if they try to draw it, the drawing comes out wrong.

As your skill with art improves, you'll be able to take those shapes/lines and rotate, bend, stretch and squash them to make all kinds of poses.

If you can do this one simple thing, you've basically figured out art. Everything else is just superfluous really.

I should be charging you all $99.99 to read this shit.

When did they stop teaching kids parables in school? Don't they tell the story about the guy who build his house on sand anymore?

You cannot build on anything unless you have a solid foundation. Whether this is a skill, a game or anything, you need that rock solid foundation first. If you don't have it and you go ahead anyway, you'll end up lop sided or even worse, everything will collapse.

You wouldn't build a house on sand. You shouldn't build your skills on sand either.

factario seems like a cool management game with an threat you have to keep at bay. most games dont have that.
binding of isaac is a really old idea that grew over the years. there may have been some weird decisions on the way but it turned out alright.
valheim was a really cozy and chill game to play with friends with a lot of leeway for content.
idk anything about spelunky, so im taking your word for that one.
disco elysium was an interesting story to play through and the character design is really down to earth. no uwuuu bait shit.
divinity, cant say anything about that one either, but my friend bugs me to play it so i might play it really soon.
garrys mod is an abomination full with spite lmao. but people use it to create funny stuff nonetheless

most of those games aren't dishonest as far as i can see. but it could be because i might be short sighted or don't have the whole picture.

i'd love to be educated on how they are dishonest or aren't a "complete person".

you'd have to write your own, but verify that's the issue first before you go writing a shader.
Just go into the model and see if there's a duplicate shell in there. It would be on the outside of the actual model but with flipped normals. If it's there and you'd rather not deal with shaders just delete it and move on.

I could also be completely wrong and it's some other weird shit the nips came up with, so who knows.

>>

Ray tracing is a rendering technique that can produce incredibly realistic lighting effects. Essentially, an algorithm can trace the path of light, and then simulate the way that the light interacts with the virtual objects it ultimately hits in the computer-generated world.

Hello, I am Stupid, How do people solve the problem of bullet instances colliding with the object they are coming out of(in this case guns)?

My first solution was to simply spawn the bullet outside the gun

Second solution is to change the collider of the character so it doesn't include the gun, does avoiding the initial collision

Third solution is to do this when instancing the bullet

Physics2D.IgnoreCollision(projectileObject.GetComponent<Collider2D>(), GetComponent<Collider2D>());

What is the solution devs pick?, does it depend on game type? Are there other solutions?

I am using unity 2D

//repeat for all elements
//for the object that contains the elements

List<element> elementTypes = new List<element>() {new FireElement()}; //add as many elements here as you want

//when dealing damage

int damage = attack - defence; //do real calculation here
foreach(element elementCheck in enemy.elementTypes) {
damage = elementCheck.ReturnDamage(attackingElement, damage);
}

Just did this off the top of my head. Might have errors but you get the basic idea.

I feel like with the invention of enums and othher things people have forgotten classes can be used to just hold data and do simple calculations like this.
A class doesn't have to do anything particularly complicated like handle an entire system. It can literally just be used to store a few numbers and to return a number when needed.

i think i got a great solution for that.
you can mastercraft something (start the minigame and the product gets better, the better you are at the game), and massproduce (the autocraft system they have right now.
want to skill quickly and sell afterwards? massproduce, want to craft something to equip yourself? mastercraft. the game would ofc change depending on what kind of item youre crafting and the materials you use.

So, today I went back to Unity to try and make the models not look like shit... I couldn't seem to make they look good without the Eevee Magic (tm), so I figured out I would try cel shading. Spent till now figuring out how to implement a cel shader in URP, ended up just going with ChiliMilk anyways (Reinventing the wheel and all that.... at least I

Now I'm feeling around for a good cel-shaded style. First up is the most extreme possible : BLACK SHADOWS AND NEON HIGHLIGHTS. Just like good old viewtful joe. I think it kinda works out, but I'll probably gonna tone down the shadows and highlights a bit after this. We'll see. Maybe keep it for dramatic shots

Any good resources on AI for realtime combat? I want them to not be retarded but there's a lot of systems at play, like which turrets on their vehicles to use, and what ranges and whatnot
speaking of that, how should I define all that data? should it go on the vehicle somehow? the player can assume control of any vehicle, so it's redundant to define all that data for a vehicle the AI will never use?
>>
>>331124076
I wasn't even talking about a game having mechanics that only work on mobile, like GPS stuff. Any game that can predominately be played with a mouse can be made to work on mobile as well. Like tactics games or RPGs where you click to move and click buttons to perform skills. Look at DS and 3DS games that heavily utilized the touch screen, there were a lot of good games made on those consoles that could work on mobile phones today.

So a tuple is like, an arraylist that can hold multiple different data types yeah?

or am I understanding this wrong
>>
>>331125205
depends on the language but generally a tuple is just a bucket to put a bunch of different data types into one thing without having to define that thing explicitly

so instead of
public class struct DataSet { int, float, string }

you can do
Tuple<int, float, string>

In gamedev or any sort of real programming it's always worth it to take the time and make a struct so that you know which value is which without looking at the source code/documentation. It's only good if you're a data science python pleb like myself and a good part of the code you write is just for experimenting and you don't need it to be understandable or good.
>>
>>331125847
honestly it's not that important of a concept. It's a micro-optimization for your workflow to avoid creating light-weight objects that only contain data.
>>
>>331126238
Ok, this is going to sound like a retarded question, cause it is, what is a struct?

I've heard it used a ton but I haven't done anything advanced in C languages so I have no idea what it is and why I should use one

You can think of it as 'a class, but you don't expect anything to change and you don't predefine anything'. And/or a 'class object that's mostly for reference/holding data'.

A struct is a custom data structure that can have many fields of different data types. You can access each one by its name as struct1.x, struct1.y, etc. In C++ it's pretty much the same as a class, but in some gay overengineered langs like java and C# classes have a bunch of extra built-in properties. So in that case, you can think of structs as classes that just hold its members' data and do nothing else.

A *day*? Anon, though I'd love for this to be my job I've got to make a living so I can keep at it.

On days where I'm free, I'll usually put 8-11 hours in. Other days I range from 0 to 2.

Only bloated languages like C++ have struct and class difference be pointless, why even have them you bloated fuck, spit it out.

>Most of what you see can be done on PC and consoles just fine.
Using both PC AND consoles to argue against making games on mobile is kinda ironic. Most console games can be done better on PC as well, but they still exist.

Depends, I try to make at least some small commit every day. If I'm adding new features or doing something interesting, maybe couple of hours. If UI suffering or some other necessary evil then maybe half-ish hour

Not in a hurry to finish and not really looking to sell my game.

... I'd probably spend a lot of hours daily if I started a new project... must stay strong...

Room spaces are now pulled randomly from their associated lists. There's no connection points that you can run into just yet but that'll be coming up next. I'm using what I learned from Verge's dungeoncrawl remake to structure this smarter than I did there. This should wind up being a breeze to expand and maintain if all goes to plan.

you sound like me almost 10 years ago. don't do that. use an engine that already has everything. it depends what your goal is trying to make a game, but whether you want to sell it or just play it yourself, using an engine like Unity or Unreal is going to be the only viable option to actually produce a game -- if you want to finish it in the next 15 years.

If you want to use c++ then go with Unreal if you can because you'd be writing scripts in c++. Unity uses c#.
