Three basic designs with either passenger and cargo or fuel and cargo variants, one more design that's a 'science' type, the latest addition varies significantly with size increase, and a sprinkle of spooky ghost variants of everything, infested with AI that actively try to fuck with your attempts to depressurise the hulls. Plus the tutorial hull of course. I'd say maybe 15 or so meaningful variants.
There does still need to be more variety and I'm personally hoping for much larger capital ship or cruise liner hulls.
However, if you were thinking of getting back in, you should definitely wait for the next patch, as they're making large changes to save file structure and how progression works, so you'll need to start over once you update.

Beware the spengies for this game has no goal, once you do the optional block progression that you can disable in the save options you are left with nothing but your mind. It's not a problem for the first two or three times but then it hits you.
Also don't play with friends on the other side of the globe, the netcode just werks at lower latency but it just doesn't with high ping.

You have no tutorial, but you have a complete handbook explaining everything, so information isn't a problem.

However, looking for ore is still a huge piece of shit, and because of the progression system... Well, to put it simply, I made my house near an iron mine, and I can't use mine it because I have no cooper and no bronze pickaxe.

It's not as bad as the other guy made it seem. The tool switching starts off really annoying but you get used to it. It's probably my favourite /egg/ game simply because of how many buttons you get to push.

Is crushing really the only way to get rid of coal easily in space exploration? My other idea was coal liquefaction and a fluid burner which would also take quite a bit of space.
Burning it for power isn't a good option either. My mining outposts won't use anywhere near what that many turbines would provide.

Coal liquefaction works pretty well, it cut my oil consumption from oil wells by about 60% and I have no excess coal anymore.
The setup is somewhat complex, you need to account for liquefaction overfilling your petrol and blocking oil from core miners if you have low usage atm, liquefaction eating up all the coal, steam source, doubling or even tripling your heavy oil -> light oil -> petrol conversion and backup crushers for coal anyways if you have too low petrol usage.
I have set it up but dunno if it's worth it.
If you have nuclear it simply isn't worth burning too.

Burning it is the way to go. That many core extractors should burn infinite coal, don't know what you're talking about. Alternatively put them up on a separate circuit with the big meteor guns, it'll happily drain away tons of power too.

I guess a few of the buildings could be a set colour each, to make them a bit easier to parse in large numbers. There's an incremental game called Factory Idle that has fairly bright colour coding for its stuff and it's quite useful there (although I haven't played it in ages, since it's an idle game where you have to have it open for the numbers to go up which is pretty irritating when you're waiting to afford something that's taking more than a day)

Just take the tools you have available and try to work with or around the existing rules, and invent new ones as you go.

Using what you have at your disposal in a clever way through quick thinking is one thing, plopping an autistic blueprint on the table in an attempt to break all balance is another. Again it depends on your group, but if some guy busts out a schematic or a verbose explanation of some machine they've imagined in their head everyone else either has to listen to them ramble on for far longer than it's worth or if they're less polite they tell him to shut up. Not engineering related but I'll use it as an example anyway; the game exalted has a mechanic called stunts which gives the players a small advantage to any roll they make of they add a cool little flourish to it. So instead of saying "I hit the zombie with my sword" the player might say "I slash the zombie across his chest" and gain a small bonus for it. It's meant to make the players get into the game more and describe cool actions. You can also get bigger bonuses if you do something particularly cool, like attempt to swing on a chandelier and leap onto an enemy across the room. But an absolute rule of these stunts is KEEP THEM SHORT. It's repeated everywhere, from the books to the forums or wherever. Because even though you might think up something that you believe is really cool and awesome in your head, the other people at the table don't want everything to be interrupted for you to rattle off your script which probably isn't half as good as you think it is anyway. Complex magical devices are the same, most people don't want to hear you describe your engineering plans and if someone pokes a hole in your logic it could make the bit drag on for even longer as you attempt to correct it.

This train is driving me crazy. I was being a lazy bastard, so i decided to load up all the stuff needed for my walls onto a single train. I used the inventory sensor mod to read the wagon contents, and then wired up some inserters/loaders. I expect some overloading, but the train gets loaded every time it pulls up into the supply station, regardless of the contents. So a train with 30 turrets in it(10 over the wire condition) will load 30 more turrets every time it stops. FUCKING WHY?!

I'm doing a Krastorio2+space exploration run currently and they're both made to work together nicely. I'm using armored biters and AAI programmable vehicles which prevents you from placing turrets close to biter nests. You basically have to make vehicles to clear out nests which was pretty fun at first. Now that I'm facing huge strong biters my vehicles that were already squishy die almost instantly.
Apparently you can equip them with shields and shit so I need to look into automating that as well if I want to take out nests easily.

Krastorio 2 adds new materials/recipes so I'm not sure if it will work if you just shove it into a new game. I didn't try "vanilla" space ex so I can't be 100% positive if it would break your save or not. Just so you know each world has a limited size. It's not like in vanilla where you can keep exploring and find richer and richer nodes. The homeworld is big enough to reach the rocket stage easily but you'll want to expand to other planets to get large amounts of any one resources.

That's close enough to my 0.5, and it's bearable. Venus has some sparse ice, but the reliable water source is hydroponics-derived O2 burned in an H2 combustor. Which works, but it needs a sizeable greenhouse to support it because you're throwing fifty mols of water away every time you fill your bar. The effects you describe from freezing are actually damage from ice crystal formation, not the temperature itself. Once something is frozen, "too low" temperature doesn't mean a damn thing.

Doubt so. In chemistry stuff usually doesn't fall apart at lower temperatures than it formed. At least not quickly. The examples exist but I struggle to remember. But the general rule is that the rate of chemical transformation is exponentially dependent on the temperature. So even if a substance is unstable, it will take a while for it to decompose. Quick search yields that many proteins denaturate somewhere below zero, but somehow that doesn't introduce problems with deep freezing foods.

Might be better to not include krastorio though - it sequence breaks orbital science. In regular space ex you need to make an orbital lab and send science up to research beacons and higher, but in krastorio you don't have to leave the planet to get most research.

Krastorio also has ways of efficient infinite resource generation, so there's even less of a reason to ever leave your home planet.

Problem arose after 20hours of fucking around survival and getting pic related as a result.
Please notice the wobble on the logic gates, yes creative and survival have different physics simulation.
Conclusion the fucking thing doesn't work in survival and creative can't be used to test things that'll be used in survival.
After an update and renewed motivation we're going to attempt this challenge once again.

The problem is that connecting the engine to the cv joint just makes the whole thing shit itself.
They updated the engine for survival but kept the creative one as is for fear of the stormworks effect.

im thinking about creating a train system in factorio. something ala stm but vanilla.
it goes like this

No. You'll have to wire up the entire length of your train network if you do that.
Instead of having a depot, just use producer and requester stations. Train waits at producer until full, and requester until empty. Use circuits to only enable requester stations when they actually need resources or there's already a train parked there.

I found that on a specific scenario with a certain beacon+module configuration, an assembler could be fed an ingredient from a North-South aligned stack inserter off an underground belt and keep up without pauses. If I tried the exact same setup but with a normal belt, it was not able to keep up and required a second inserter.

I can't seem to replicate it when testing, is this the orientation you mean? If anything, it looks like the one picking up from the normal belt is slightly faster. The lights turn on when there's more than 200 iron in the chest. If I leave it running the difference seems to be increasing, so pickup up off of normal belt seems slightly quicker.

What you're describing sounds like you want to control the train limit at least at the requesting station dynamically, not to have it set to 2. Also I'm not sure I like the idea of the empty and depot stations being shared. If they're shared, then presumably they're in some centralized location instead of being near the stations that actually need the trains, so you may end up with trains moving around more than necessary. I'm not sure the depo stations are necessary in the first place. Obviously idle trains need a place to wait (the "empty" stations), but once the train is full it should depart to wherever it is required and if it isn't required in the first place, then there's no need for it to leave the loading station in the first place, is there?

The only reason to want a depo for full trains that I can imagine would be if loading were very slow and you'd want to "buffer" full trains so that if multiple are required at once they're ready to go. Large buffers are useful if you have slow supply and demand that comes in spikes, but that shouldn't really be the case here. Loading trains isn't slow, so as far as I can tell it should be perfectly fine to basically have the train schedule like EMPTY > PICKUP > DROPOFF since after the train leaves a pickup station an empty one will take its place and load in a matter of seconds.

No, I didn't have any on me so I didn't test. Looks like that's the reason, though. Looking at this it's obvious what's happening, it's not an issue of compression but the fact that the inserter refuses to touch the other lane on the belt, unless it's an underground. It doesn't matter for the faster belts since a single lane is fast enough to feed the inserter anyway (as fast as grabbing from the side of the belt) but it does for yellow belts. I wonder if this is actually a bug or intended behavior, seems kind of weird to be intended and it's very unintuitive to me that an inserter would refuse to consume from one of the lanes entirely.

But that is false, you can watch the webm I posted and see the other one grabbing from both lanes on the yellow underground, precisely because items ARE NOT rolling in faster than it can turn. You can see how the other one is moving over both lanes and you can see that it has much higher throughput as well, it moves 200 items way, WAY faster than the ""efficient"" behavior of the other one. I mean, the behavior is clearly fine for red and blue belts since those are fast enough anyway, but on a yellow belt it's completely illogical to have it wait instead of grabbing items from the other lane which is already available.

The test starts at like 0:02 in the video
The inserter on the yellow underground finishes at around 0:22
The other one on regular yellow belt finishes at about 0:30, it's much slower because it's waiting instead of picking up from the other lane

You should only need to door-decompress once per ship. Getting close to a door and pointing your cursor at it will tell you if it's DANGERous to open, and there's also a scanner mode than shows pressurisation, though I've never bothered using it. Safely decompressing as much as possible is the intended puzzle, and the rest can be solved by getting into the pressurised section and opening all the interior doors, then a single exterior one.
Cockpits are always a bitch to depress, since they only have one door. I just scoot in, grab collectables, scoot out again, vac out the adjacent room and open the door. I never have problems with damaged components.
You only really need to worry when you've got cooland and/or fuel lines running through pressurised areas. Use regulators in those sections to vac them out, never open a door or you might have a bad time.

You're supposed to use atmosphere controllers to pressurise or vent before opening doors. Once all the internal doors are open, setting one controller to vent should vent the entire ship. But that takes too long, so usually you just open the door and stand out of the way of the stream of flying debris. A pressure differential doesn't really matter for smaller rooms, so long as the main interior space is vented before you start cutting the ship apart.

Decided to try out stormworks and after some confusion and a lot of testing it seems like liquid tanks are bugged with regards to hoses/the water cannon in that no matter how much you refill them from the ocean, they can only spray the volume that you started with in those tanks. There is a possibility you missed the pad even if you have it selected. You can see the failure chance in the rocket silo, and can improve it with research. You should check out the Nauvis orbital platform, the goodies from there will allow you to research some basic tech to improve landing chances and salvaged rocket sections.

Why doesnt this work? It should be producing 60 circuits a second, a full green belt. The problem appears to be in the copper wire, it just isnt producing enough to keep up, even though helmod says it should.

The weakest link here is the engine, if the force to move the wheels is too great, the engine will start running backwards, at which point depending on the timing system ( timing pate, timing pins, logic ) it will tick like a clock which batteries are dead.
Doing an actual gearbox with gears is nearly impossible though as was previously tested.
There are other solutions for a gearboxes, like logic but it requires a much bigger vehicle.
SM has a number of "bugs" that have been used by the community to build and hence will never be patched.
glitch weld, pistons and suspensions having no collisions with other blocks, suspension glitch and probably loads more other.
And that is why I like SM devs, they're slow as fuck but they don't patch out fun things.

Whatever you put in beacons will have an overall stronger effect than whatever you put in the machine. For 3x3 machines the "standard" beacon layouts have either 8 or 12 beacons in range of each machine. Every beacon has 2 module slots but only provides 50% of the effect, so that means that 1 beacon with 2 of the same module is equivalent to 1 of that module in a machine. That means that beacons provide 8 or 12 modules to a machine, while machines themselves have 2-4 module slots only, so you can stack the effect higher with beacons than with whatever you slap into the machines themselves.

I have never tried to reduce pollution, but thinking about it, beacons themselves do not pollute I think. Machines pollute based on their power usage, therefore you'd want to reduce that as much as possible, so I guess you'd want efficiency modules in beacons and everything powered by solar since that doesn't pollute either. I'm not sure whether there's some efficiency cap or anything like that, though.

Are you trying to speedrun it? There are only three stages to the space elevator (four in the beta branch), so 50 minutes for a stage really isn't a long time. I suggest using that time to start building some of the infrastructure for the third phase (although you can't build manufacturers or refineries yet). Note that the third stage uses smart plating as an ingredient, so don't tear that down when you're done.

The solution to performance is to scale up. Do the assemblers which make smart plating have sufficient ingredients? Yes -> more smart plating assemblers, no -> more constructors/assemblers for the ingredients. Repeat down the line until everything is backing up (i.e. you're producing at least as much of everything as you're consuming). Then it's just a matter of ensuring that you're mining enough raw material; if not, find and tap more nodes (you should be using mk2 miners on everything now).

At this point (tier 4 unlocked), power may be an issue. There's usually one spot near your base which is suitable for a coal plant; determine how much coal/minute you get from mk2 miners on all of the nearby coal nodes and build as many generators as that will sustain. Get coal for steel from elsewhere (i.e. coal nodes not close to water). The next-nearest coal+water location is probably too far away to be practical at this stage, and won't be necessary once you get oil.

You should remove the three coolant canisters from the ECU before cutting the pipe. That way, coolant doesn't spray everywhere when you cut the pipe. Removing the third canister will initiate the reactor meltdown, so first ensure that the coolant pipe is the only thing which needs to be cut to free the reactor. Terry the prototype got scrapped since he didn't pass the stress test.
The engine was too weak and fiddling with the timing plate was a nightmare because of how I built it.

Since a boxer4 was too weak I just made a boxer8 engine. Looking at some stuff in the workshop I saw some dude welding his first piston set to the sensors of the timing plate which saves 1 block in length. So really double the power (in theory) for one length more.
This time I also used spaceship blocks for the frame because fuck dealing with pipes, and the timing plate is way easier to adjust and fiddle with.
The initial logic setup is a pain in the ass and since it's a boxer engine this time I can't reverse via just moving the timing plate. Gears can fix that tho

Right click an image, upload with sharex, and splurt the link over to someone else. Also it can record gifs super easy and that's pretty rad. Dune Desert is the easiest start, IMO. You start at the Eastern edge. Build the platform just above the initial iron miners, you can expand West, all the way to the Red Oasis if desired. Several iron and copper nodes in the main desert area.

To the South there's a limestone node, then some coal and iron just a bit farther South and West, sulfur just to the West of that (on top of a rock formation). Those nodes are close enough together that you might want to set up a mini-base there to make nobelisks.

There's more coal West of the starting point on the coast, so a good place for coal power. Caterium to the North of that, also on the coast. Quartz is on the North coast near the Red Oasis. Oil to the South-West near the Desert Canyons. Bauxite and Uranium in the Swamp to the South (Uranium is in the cave behind the waterfall on the West edge of the Swamp; if you scan it shows up as being in the Titan Forest area).

There's actually a fair bit of biomass to be had in the oases, enough to last until you get coal power. Once you have a chainsaw, the weird trees there yield mycelia.

1) It's not THAT bad, you whiny little shits. The two basedbeans measure decay after one day in 20C, left, and vacuum, right. Even in the vacuum case we're talking like two weeks for food to decay, that's not the end of the world given that getting water going is already a fucking speedrun. 2) What IS bullshit here is live plant decay. You know how growing by themselves when their conditions are met is kind of how plants do? Yeah, better get used to fussing over them. Of the plants I have at hand (flowers, fern, wheat, rice, basedbean, corn, mushroom) corn degrades the fastest and flowers don't degrade at all, which I guess is actually an improvement because the fuckers are useless otherwise. So instead of spiller/filler/thriller it's spiller/spiller/spiller, with flowers everywhere being the new O2 generators and everything else only grown for production purposes.

Grass plains look pretty, but they're rather poor of resources, even water is a problem.
Along with other places people recommended, rocky desert is also an ok location up to a mid game. There's a good amount of stuff, not a lot of enemies, the ocean is close and easily accessible and the terrain is decently flat and open. One big downside for the late game is that there's no caterium or bauxite in that whole corner of the map at all and the closest nodes are in rather difficult locations.

Yes I mixed it up with sulfur, the closest node is up the big waterfall and like halfway into the northern forest.
Bauxite is on a 150m high cliff guarded by a horde of spitters (alpha as well).
There's quartz inside the cave up north if you don't mind spiders, with one exit close to nitrogen and the other right by the coal.

It's still pretty viable if you start the base on a hill, i've got an underground atmospherics that sucks in air from the surface, a power room which is just bigass battery farm pulling in juice from the surface and the next floor will be hydroponics to deal with the extreme amount of co2 i've amassed from filtration.
Their elevator code really doesn't like being built downwards but once you trick the platform into spawning its forced to obey.
Only thing is if the base explodes for some reason you're pretty much fucked, removing wreckage can be remarkably difficult for no apparent reason.

mining is actually a lot more fulfilling than any similar game,
what you have to do is mark any copper bits on the surface that you find, there are likely a bunch everywhere on the mine, copper is pretty plentiful, but immediately beneath those copper bits you're likely to find a surface deposit which will get you going for a long time

next is finding deep deposits, which are more rare and required for some types of ore for alloy and advanced metals, they are much harder to find so you have to use a prospecting pick, which helps you nail down a place with higher density for the ore you're looking,
so in turn what you have to do is explore quite a lot instead of blindly digging, going into caves, prospecting, and marking down the location where you find a high density of anything

well plants DO need tending, they DO spoil, or do you thing the corn that grows in the field stays like that forever? its just that in nature they spoil, drop to the ground and sprout a new plant
also it all depends on the spoilage rate, and I'm guessing it must be pretty slow, or much slower that the fruit would have otherwise, ferns are probably even slower, and it should also make automated farms more useful afterall

It's currently faster than the food. If you pick a tomato off a plant, the plant will decay before the tomato does. And you can't refrigerate the plants like you can the produce.

What I'd do if I wanted to do it like that would be to have the plant revert to a previous stage if it made sense for the plant, like corn or tomatoes. I'm going to let a couple types of live plant decay to see if it does that, drops rot or just disappears.

No. Volatile ice is common, water ice is rare, oxite is missing. Almost all of my water has to be combusted using plant-derived oxygen and H2, which takes a LOT more oxygen than what I breathe because there's no water recycling. 100 mols a day (-ish) just disappear. Plus I'll eventually need a supply of fuel mix for advanced furnace and rocket shenanigans.

Eh. I've got the answer I needed - flowers or GTFO. I'll poke around but I'm not going to invest that much energy in figuring out how a dev is trying to unfuck the consequences of a stupid design choice (making plants mature in about a day, and be insanely overproductive) instead of fixing the mistake in the first place (intuitive plant lifetime and productivity, and a bigger starting food supply).

This is starting to become a headache of fun.

The first order is to finish building the rear axle but past me thought it would be a great idea to put it on angled suspension instead of the cheap level1 pistons which have give.
Then add a reverse gear, fix the torque twist and apparently a rotating body kit like any "yuro" truck has. I even made plans for fucking modular trailers.

Space quartermaster.

You're a semi-enslaved AI from a bygone age, wiped and retasked to manage tramp freighters because only AIs can handle warp and negotiate with the ancient automated repair systems that otherwise would rip out whatever humans put in for not being authorized.

In port, you can purchase supplies and parts from the station AI, move shit around, soup up the engine, generally engineer the shit out of whatever. In transit, you allocate computing and power use among the ship's systems, damage control, etc, whatever it takes to get to the next berth. Engineering systems get as complicated as can fit in the game, with an emphasis on life support and engine modeling. The tiniest of ships maybe can only fit a feeder of Space Chow, while big ships can afford the luxury of hydroponics.

The kicker is that while you manage the ship and spend the budget, you don't control the ship or the missions. The captain chooses where to go, what to trade and how to react to encounters, all you can do is provide support and maybe nudge them. Captains are always flawed. The philanderers will sometimes need to leave the station in a hurry, the smugglers will take any crazy trade, the schlimazels are always broke. But they also rely on you. Build nice cabins and life support, they're more likely to take on passengers. Fast ship, fast runs. Bigger guns, better bounties. As you build up trust, you can spend it Sunless Seas style to get them to be less of a fucking idiot when it counts.

But captains are also temporary. Eventually the gamblers lose the ship, the alcoholics drink themselves to death, the noble warriors bite it being a hero. Everyone dies but you.

But however they lose the ship, your performance is scored based on how happy and successful you made the captain, which is fed into brownie points with the other AIs for securing a better ship/captain.
