40 to 60 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.About 350 games in the week around your release.AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 50 games a day, 1500 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.>He thinks that indie gamedev can provide a sustainable primary income in 2021HahahahahaH O B B YOBBY

How do you actually transfer an idea or knowledge into something concrete in an engine? Like I understand how A* works, but I have no idea how to visualize a grid with points that hold information. I'm pretty codelet but I feel like A* isn't THAT big of a leap into difficult projects. The problem with looking stuff up is that it feels like I did nothing myself and learned nothing.

>>325643797normally you start with a class that holds the data you want:class Node { int x; int y;}and then a class that keeps the data in a structure:class NodeGrid { Node[,] Nodes; int width; int height; }

Are there any good resources on designing a quest system? I already have different typed of objectives set up(kill thing/go to location/collect item). So now each "Quest" should be a tree with multiple objectives that need to be executed in order, correct? I'm also thinking about laying out quest unlocking in a tree structure as well, that way if a quest is failed(because you kill an NPC or something) it unlocks some other quest instead

if you are playing a platformer with ARROWS and Z. what keybind should be used for sprinting?
>>325669073that makes sense but then functions like giveGold would need to know the source, right? because say a perk is more gold from quests or from containers but not both>>325669110I don't think that works for the more outlandish perks, like say every third rocket spawns a homing missile or encounters "are more wacky"

>>325669426>because say a perk is more gold from quests or from containers but not bothWell it depends on how you do things but you could either allow event/triggers to giveGold, thus passing the source of the gold to giveGold. Dungeons are now about 30% implemented in To Ash and Ember.You can roam hallways, have encounters, run into traps/loot/barriers/puzzles and enter/exit rooms. It presently only supports noneuclidean-type dungeons (read: you go to a new room each time you enter one) but once I get the Crawling interface in you'll be able to select where you're going just like Darkest Dungeon.This may be just playable enough to ship as an update for DemoDay. Anyone care to share some ideas with a dev noob? I'm trying to plan out hit detection and damage for a MMBN clone. I have a basic targeting system set-up (purple tile in pic) that takes the currently targeted tiles (variable stored in the player pawn) and uses a for loop to compare the target tile IDs to all the tiles in the battle grid, finds the ones that match, then flips a boolean contained in that tile (isHighlighted). Would a viable way to register hits be, on the event of the player firing off an attack, I loop through the array of tiles, find the ones that are currently being highlighted/targeted, check a IsOccupied? boolean, then if so, call a damage function on the occupying actor?

Thief does this weird thing where it seems to allow you to interact with an object as long as it's visible on screen. My solution to this was checking if the object was recently rendered and checking the distance. The problem with this solution is that it makes it so you can interact with objects through transparent surfaces like a window.Any ideas? Raytracing is out because I want the player to be able to interact even if a single corner/edge is visible.
>>325718878make the window an object, put it at the front of the check, and break it.
