40 to 60 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 350 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 50 games a day, 1500 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Can someone explain to a retard what are helper classes and/or methods in C# and their use ?

There's this helper class with its static methods thare is declared in the file of this interface.

>>
>>325640109
who are you quoting?
>>
>>325638314
Terrible math. You have no real quantification on the level of effort given by devs who have tried to make a game.

The amount of devs who want to make a commercial game but are entirely unserious about it is immense. You're too stupid to be giving advice and using mathematical models for results.
>>
Why does procrastination happen? I'm way too comfy browsing 4ch and occasionally playing some games to do anything else
>>

Anon I hope when you see a company like oreos doing pro white supremacy stuff that you don't think they do it sincerly, they do it because a they know a lot of people like that stuff an they know they can cash in on it.
>>
>>325640769
It's fun to think about ideas/problems and then come up with solutions to implement/solve them, but then things don't work and I get immensely frustrated by not understanding *why* they don't work. I always end up feeling like I'm just legitimately too retarded for coding and game-related math.
>>
oh shit i got an idea.
>>
>>325640891
lmao nice cope
How about this, even if 80% of games are garbage, that's still .2 * 1500 = 300 games a month who are by definition not-garbage, including your "serious commercial game"

Enjoy your hobby

Interfaces are contracts, IMeleeFighter tells that anyone who uses it will be forced to implement certain functions. Good example is the Math class, you can use Math.sin() without having to instantiate a Math object.
Having interfaces for static helper classes is kinda weird not gonna lie

Try to split the problem into smaller problems. Don't lookup how to implement A*, or how to draw a grid. Look up how to draw a line. Then figure out, using that information, how to draw a grid. Then implement A* and display it on the grid.

I already have different typed of objectives set up(kill thing/go to location/collect item). So now each "Quest" should be a tree with multiple objectives that need to be executed in order, correct? My only problem is writing DSLs like this, that try to abstract state and variables away, get pretty unwieldy for big projects, as well as noisy and impossible to refactor.

network repair is a hard problem that I'd suggest you avoid attempting at all cost. In an indie game I would generally suggest that you have a single main quest line of well-crafted quests that immediately follow into one another combined with optional side quests at each stage. A complex quest structure gets into a very deep hole of graph theory and exponentially exploding content requirements very quickly. Quality > Quantity > Complexity

List<StatusEffect>() statuses
foreach(status in statuses)
status.apply(player)

if some statuses have higher priority(since they will affect each other) you could have an importance value in them and sort the list with it before going through them

even AAA games mostly just do A -> B -> C -> D with side quests. Unless you are explicitly trying to design a new piece of technology to handle quests in a novel way, there's no real reason to do anything else. All you would be doing is costing yourself more time and effort for replayability that nobody is ever going to experience because your game will never come out.

that's literally what I suggested, though. In fact I think you're doing more harm by saying the vague "simple list of requirements" or allowing quests to be failed at all. Quests should directly, concretely lead to exactly one new quest or be self-contained with no concrete relationships to other quests. Branching questlines are a stupid meme and the feeling of branching can be accomplished without the quest structure itself actually branching.

the whole concept of "requirements" is not trivial to model from a software perspective. Quests should be gated by physical locality or other quests in a quest line. Once you start getting into "has X number of Y items in inventory" and "has Z relationship status with W npc" and evaluating these conditions every single time anything needs to be evaluated because they cascade or retroactively get invalidated and need to unravel, you're just wasting your time when it's much easier to achieve the same thing with a slightly more limited approach.

You should have "single source of truth" functions that you pass your character to, and plug in perk modifiers.
So that code turns into
giveGold(character);

>>
>>325668804
What I do is this:

>loot.gold = randomgold() + character.bonus_gold

This way when the player gets the perk, all the perk does is add +5 to the "bonus_gold" player variable. And anything can add or subtract from that "bonus_gold" variable, like enchanted equipment, or potion effects.

Well it depends on how you do things but you could either allow event/triggers to giveGold, thus passing the source of the gold to giveGold. Or make a Gold object/struct that can hold that information, so you can apply perk modifiers correctly and pass a gold object to giveGold
There's plenty of other ways too.

You'll end up a salesslave instead, which may turn out to be even worse.

Yes, being a wageslave sucks, but there's a reason why most people just put up with the misery. But if you want to take the risks, go right ahead, just understand that if you really do decide to salesslave instead of wageslave, there are other fields where the risk-reward odds are a lot better than in indie gamedev.

omori is just another earthbound clone for supposed earthbound fans.

your perception of what is or is not hard will never reflect reality until you actually start making a game. Movement is easy. Having everything move at the same time is actually easier than having your game enforce rules about who can move when and under what conditions. AI is exactly as hard as you want to make it. What's really hard is building a good piece of software, properly allocating your developer time, making intentional decisions about what you game should be, and staying focused on the main product you are trying to produce. Very few actually hard things are genre or artstyle specific.

Multi-level marketing scams and trading scams. Anything that involves actually creating a product (like indie gamedev) is a high risk because you will invest a lot of time into actually making a product that is not guaranteed to sell. Taking an already existing product and selling it is much lower risk.

Even if you are absolutely set on creating a product to sell, there are other alternative products that require much, much lower initial time investments than gamedev, like writing a book or drawing pictures or composing music.

no, i mean i get that part. i multiply by delta as well because "physics".

It doesn't have to do with using an animation player, I'm using an animation player set to physics mode to move the platforms in my example.
It's a combination of using "move_and_slide_with_snap" as well as "get_floor_velocity". The move and snap function helps keep the player on the platforms, and adding the velocity of the floor will allow the player to move with the platform, no matter what direction it's moving.
>>
>>325692058

Not exactly /adgd/ since its modding but fuck you
DQXIS can have both TAA and Dynamic Resolution on PC through ini edits, but the resolution changes cause really bad artifacting/ghosting with TAA enabled (pic related). This was also the case on switch when enabling TAA (dynamic res is on by default). Is there any way to mitigate this effect? I imagine the Temporal AA upsampling feature would work perfectly, but it seems the version of the engine the game uses doesn't have that (4.18)

If there's anything that seems like it'll be visually annoying to pull off in blueprints, you'd probably be better off writing it in c++ and then using that node in the blueprint editor
Otherwise it's usually ok, although there are some features of the engine that are only exposed to c++
Look into nativization if you want that extra boost in performance from blueprints

Dungeons are now about 30% implemented in To Ash and Ember.

You can roam hallways, have encounters, run into traps/loot/barriers/puzzles and enter/exit rooms. It presently only supports noneuclidean-type dungeons (read: you go to a new room each time you enter one) but once I get the Crawling interface in you'll be able to select where you're going just like Darkest Dungeon.

This may be just playable enough to ship as an update for DemoDay. I'm considering it.

it doesn't. My understanding is ninjas only run with their hands backwards if they've got sharp tools in their hands like claws, shuriken, kunai, short swords, daggers, etc, so in case they trip, they don't stab themselves. Anyone care to share some ideas with a dev noob? I'm trying to plan out hit detection and damage for a MMBN clone. I have a basic targeting system set-up (purple tile in pic) that takes the currently targeted tiles (variable stored in the player pawn) and uses a for loop to compare the target tile IDs to all the tiles in the battle grid, finds the ones that match, then flips a boolean contained in that tile (isHighlighted). Would a viable way to register hits be, on the event of the player firing off an attack, I loop through the array of tiles, find the ones that are currently being highlighted/targeted, check a IsOccupied? boolean, then if so, call a damage function on the occupying actor?

I don't really care about his success; I have nothing to show for myself either. It's just that upon seeing that image, I watched one random video and it was entirely without substance, even going so far as to betray its own point. He talks about "implication mechanics", gives his own game as an example, and then immediately admits that he didn't even do any "implication mechanics" analysis or design, but that he just contrived this shit as a retrofitted justification for the design decisions he had already made completely intuitively.

What a complete waste of time.

Thief does this weird thing where it seems to allow you to interact with an object as long as it's visible on screen. My solution to this was checking if the object was recently rendered and checking the distance. The problem with this solution is that it makes it so you can interact with objects through transparent surfaces like a window.

Any ideas? Raytracing is out because I want the player to be able to interact even if a single corner/edge is visible.
>>
>>325718878
make the window an object, put it at the front of the check, and break it.

Yeah, I get that, it's just that some people are good at relaying concrete information even if they can't apply said information in a productive way. Like, I don't need someone to have made a great RTS when seeking out information on RTS-specific pathfinding, for example. They just need to know their shit in this particular area.

When it comes to overall game design or tips on how to stay motivated/finish a game, you're probably right, though.

indie devs really need to understand that traditional games worked for a reason. As in, releasing a 1.0 and then doing post-content. Outside of a number of genres (mainly MP, and pure sandbox stuff like minecraft, people really hate drip-feed content in a barely-finished game. That's why early access is such a mixed bag of mostly failures.

Graveyard Keeper felt like this.
>oh yeah it's fun farming bodies
>wow so much taxes
>broke all the time
>constantly working hours in real time to even get money
>sold everything and lived off scraps
>estimated I would be able to finish the game in about another 100 hours

raytrace from all eight corners of the physics bounding box + the center of the object. if a single one is false then assume the object is visible. it's not a pixel accurate solution but it's a decent enough approximation and only has a couple edge cases where it won't work.

A horror game that turns into a farming sim that turns into a horror game
>your life is falling apart due to your failing farm
>mental problems start arising which manifest into reality distortion
>but one day your farm suddenly turns around
>but it's too perfect and suddenly reality starts to feel off again
>one day you wake up to a mysteriously chipper voice

That depends how dialog heavy your game is. Mine is very dialog heavy so I made a system that just reads .json files for dialog.

I was working on a simple, small-scale, comfy survival sim, but then I found a game on itch.io that was stylistically and in many ways mechanically identical to what I had in mind, so I quit.
