It's recommended to read as much as you can, but really you just need to read the basics (ie. "the basics" plus job descriptions and guides to things that everyone should know, like basic first aid) to start with. Stay away from any job that requires you to have skill at the game and/or RP starting out - as you play through easy jobs like bartender or botanist or cargo tech and cut your RP teeth you'll become familiar with the basic mechanics of the game and you will be able to take on more advanced jobs.
