Crossbreeding Edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3000 units, 900 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.
It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Oceania's capricorns have -1 E UW and -W on land, and transformation gets rid of it. So in their case, it not only gets rid of upkeep on a hugely expensive wizard, it also makes them better wizards.

Also, if you twiceborn in a size 1 or 2 form then transform into a size 5 or 6 form, you pay only the 5 or 10d but still get the tartarian chassis when you die. Even the size 4 wight is pretty good.

Do be aware that some forms still have upkeep and in some cases might increase it. Namely the Ettin, Troll, and Hydra will have high upkeep if your mage ends up rolling them. They might get regeneration out of the deal though, so they could still be worth keeping in that form.
If the mage you transform has any priest levels they'll keep those and stay sacred, but otherwise will lose sacred status.

Shock is the closest to a no-brainer since you get less out of swiftness (unless cav) and fighting A is so much harder otherwise. If you have F or W access, aren't casting barkskin and have decent prot, fire res isn't a big deal, especially if you have/take magic weapons. Cold res is the easiest to get by without, only frozen heart, surprise grip of winter or Niefelheim/Vaettiheim warrant it. But not bad for a thug bless, since FH is a real thug-killer.

I like some of DE’s changes to Asphodel. It goes hard on the dark slumber theme and sets them Sloth3 with Black Centaurs and manikins getting Slothpower. Plus making the popkill a lot more manageable along with better freespawn and reanimation rates. The only thing I’m really iffy on is the centaurs losing berserk in exchange for the sleep aura. For a good SC chassis, you generally want some combination of:

Good self-buffing paths such as death, fire, earth, or air
Inherent elemental resistances
High MR and HP
No exploitable unit tags like magical being, demon, undead, etc

You want to gear supercombatants to take little damage, passively damage people attacking them or deal damage in an area, and be net fatigue-neutral. Wraith Lords are good for Agartha because, even though they're undead, they're immortal so they only die if they're enslaved or soul slain, are very easy to get fatigue-neutral because they're undead, are inherently ethereal and have fear and a chill aura, and can cast Soul Vortex. Tartarians are difficult for most nations to pull off because in addition to Conjuration 9 and high death magic, you also need high nature, high Enchantment/Construction research, and moderate Thaumaturgy research. Once you get a Tartarian system up and running they're incredibly powerful but you have to jump through a ton of hoops to get it working.

It should have MRN, it's just bad with the number of mitigating factors it currently has. It's also really niche since you're basically counting on losing the fight and only getting payoff up to 10 turns later.
N/F is awkward because most poisons and acids are already covered by N, N/W and W/F. Elixir of Life and Fountain of Youth use N/F to forge, maybe it could be used for some kind of energizing buff, like the attack/combat speed buff spells some undead nations get.

MA Ermor is Christian Rome who accidentally turned everyone into skeletons trying to resurrect Jesus. They're all undead, have no recruitable troops or mages, freespawn skeletons everywhere and have boosted gem income to summon their mages and sacreds.
Sceleria is a fragment of former Christian Rome who saw the skeleton apocalypse and said "that's bad but we can learn from this and do it better!" In LA, they become MA Ermor except everyone is spooky ghosts instead of skeletons. They recruit normal Roman troops and mages covered in memento mori but their priests can also reanimate longdead every turn for free, since Sceleria is a nation run by lazy necromancers who make skeletons pick cotton.
You have a living and dead version of massive skeleton army, and they're both very strong and considered big threats in MP.

I know why this happens, actually. Archer scripting / firing orders is based on the first unit in their squad. If that unit is a melee unit, the entire squad will ignore fire orders and act as if they're melee. If that unit loses an arm, runs out of ammo, or is otherwise unable to fire, all archers act as if they're melee units as well.

First, what the hell are they supposed to be? Celts? Celto-Romans? Saxons? Normans? And what about the logrians? Pick one and resprite the troops accordingly. Personally I like the romanish aesthetic of Sam Niell's Merlin miniseries for MA and for LA I would do 14-15th century English armies. Pretty much every troop except the knights of avalon and landless knights could use a resprite.

I think fire shield’s damage scales with the caster’s F path. 1 additional damage per level. However, the real reason your idea doesn’t work is that fire shield only triggers after you’ve been hit. Dominate early game with tiger riders
Then kinda chill and hope you don't get destroyed by nations with an actual mid game
Then use your cheap researcher / magic dueler to beat other astral nations and generally the power of astral to win late

It's a pretty shaky plan though since you don't really have a strong midgame, you get bit better once you have soul slay and light of the northern star since you get a 160g stand alone soul slayer from that but before that you are in quite a pickle + even that isn't that great since your chaff is generally speaking terrible.

If your armies can move more than one prov per turn, heat is good for preserving that. If you're a slow heavy infantry nation, cold will only slow down mages and will make it harder for fast nations to attack you.
If you've got fire or cold res in your bless, it'll protect you from the +2 enc penalty you'll take in H3 or C3. Usually you'll have fire res since it's much more useful.
If you can use water eles, don't take cold. If water eles are good against you (like if you have expensive troops), cold will urn them into shit-tier ice eles.

Ice eles, earth eles and illearths are basically the same thing, a pile of HP with low def, low attack and low prot. They get cut to pieces trampling and they have 10 attack and fist attacks with attack penalties, so they can't fight anything their size, either.
Either a prot buff or slash/pierce resistance would save them all in trampling, an attack buff would make them okay at regular fighting. It's also dumb how they have regular human fist attacks when stone fist and icicle fist already exist.

Generally heat is better since heat doesn't usually bother neutral nations but cold causes snow move which can cripple lot of neutral nations and hinder troop movements and expansion in friendly turf. You should assume you are on the offense most of the time so the only thing that really matters is the friendly move so thinking about the bonuses the heat and cold nations get on your lands is kinda pointless. That being said if you can't move than one province per turn and know the game is filled with heat nations or cold blooded nations then just go cold. Cold bonuses are also bit worse than heat bonuses and if the map is known ahead of time that can also have an impact so if you want to overthink it go ahead.

Holy fuck, this is like a white Pan being born.
The later the game goes on, the stronger mages get, and eventually you can actually have an "army" of purely mages. Niefelheim, Jotunheim and Utgard especially can do it fast and to great effect.
If we're talking fire mages, you'd want them to summon blockers before throwing fire. Phoenix Pyre -> Summon Fire Elemental -> Fireball x3 will get you a wall of fireproof units to keep your mages safe. Battle summons in general are very strong, and spending gems in a big fight is usually more efficient than summon permanent monsters or forging items.

The singleplayer AI is dumb but cheats out huge armies, so learning how to kill them with mages is sometimes the only way to reasonably handle it. There are even battlefield wipes like Foul Vapors which can allow a small group of mages to wipe a massive stack if no countermeasures are cast (which the AI won't).

I can't find my notes but I cracked open some 2h files, without a password the name is at position 0x84. You want to XOR with 0x4F. The tendie pass is stored at 0x36 and it's terminated with a 0x78, I can't remember what it does for a cipher, I think position 0x35 is a 0x78 if there's no pass, and 0x19 if there is a pass. I think that's the only variable length part of the newlord file prior to the name. Game name's in there somewhere too but I think it's empty for newlord files.
Hopefully that will help, if you do end up decoding the whole thing, please document it somewhere, it'd be useful to have around and I'm kicking myself for not uploading the spec.

I wasn't really contested much this game. Early on, Bogarus had to fight me because he was in a corner that had him locked behind me and Abysia. His only real hope was to get one of me and Abysia to fight each other early, then find a way to turn on the victor. Instead, he got 1v2ed and while he used PD traps well, that's a really difficult matchup and he didn't take an awake researcher or similar early game god that would have let him survive it

Abysia decided to be bros for life, so I took over the sea and caves while he took over the northwestern part of the map. Because the connections are super shitty, this took us both a while.

I had made this build SPECIFICALLY to conquer the seas and beat Atlantis, because Mictlan has by far the best amphibious units in LA, but Atlantis instead lost an early war to Marignon.

Ragha conquered Patala, then fought and lost to Utgard. Marignon, after beating Atlantis, also beat Vaettiheim. Then Abysia attacked him ineffectually with fireballs and sacreds (he never deployed the blood and assassination cabbage that makes LA Aby so strong), then I attacked him with a wall of sacreds and horror strikes and he stopped playing. Then I played single player for a bit to take his stuff and get enough thrones to win.

Could you recommend some builds? I can't remember what I went with, but when it comes to Bogarus, it feels like you don't have many options because while the nation is an absolute unit of a blood nation, and can do many, many things, it seems like it doesn't have much the pretender can synergise with, with its flags being garbo, the national summons it can't access natively being by and large complete trash (with the exception not being quite good enough to warrant taking a pretender specifically for it), and the recruit anywhere cav being just barely good enough, that if you find something the cav dies too, chances are a monster pretender or titan pretender would die to it as well.

When I played bog, I took an awake ormr which at the very least means you get your provinces earlier. Frontloading your income / getting a second fort up faster makes such a massive difference on a mage nation, and on a nation like bog that can't recruit an exp party every turn without its cap circle, an awake makes that like 2 turns faster.

Awake researcher is a pretty decent duel / rush build, and in a tiny game like this where you have the potential to be penned in, getting stupidly early research of some kind out can help win wars that you can't win just based on troops

Druzhina aren't even spectacular heavy cav for their price and not having a kite shield hurts, but you can make them work if you minmax on them, which you have to. Bogarus is one of the best cases for max scales, and O3/P3 will let you recruit an expansion party worth per turn (I think 8.5 or so) once you have the res, that nets you a decent expansion and your scales and 30g commanders let you afford mercs to supplement further. Just layering Luck and Body Ethereal on them is an easy research goal (especially for your rapid research) and lets them last forever and not get shot to pieces while you do air communion stuff. It's not like this will beat every nation's rush, but you're not a pushover and have a good array of low research magical options, and you can't expect to win every year 0 war when you pick a backloaded nation.
An awake or dormant monster is probably the safest bet for surviving, but you don't have any of the good E/N monsters that have both damage output and durability with minimal research, so I would honestly rather roll the dice with scales. Especially since we have loads of newbros and it's a coin toss if the guy rushing you knows how to play.

Agema Companion - basically the same unit, -5g for lower prot and better def. Can probably trade cost effectively but worse against magic
Samurai Cavalry - It's a light cavalry what you expected. It can still win thanks to katana being better weapon and -5g cost but lack of shield and traits makes it vulnerable to other stuff

Worse:
Cave Knight - sorry it's just a bad cav unit, twice as expensive and while the cave dragon is pretty good it will get chopped up by the heavy attacks of the Druzhina. Notable though is that in darkness it should be superior and the cave dragon is much better at killing chaff so if the contest wasn't 1v1 but who can hold enemy summons or chaff for the longest then the cave knight might have a chance.

You could certainly make an argument about some of those and I didn't take RP or resources into account. The Druzhinas +3 cold resist and bodyguard abilities are also something to consider. Bodyguard is usually useless and +3 cold resist isn't enough to negate frozen heart without added buffs but at (3+5) it would be significantly better than other nations +5, still you overpay for those traits for what they are worth imo, placing Druzhina on the bottom 5 of the 15 or so "viable" cavalry units. Druzhina just seems so great when compared to Voi manlets.

Bodyguard is actually pretty useful since mid and late game the main role of druzhina is to sit their asses on top of your mages and keep them safe which you can now only do by smearing them five to a mage set to guard commander (rather than 100 on one or two commanders as in dom4), you at least do get use out of the beefy morale bonus.
Otherwise yes I suppose all of that is true, but at the end none of it matters because Malaia Druzhina look absolutely sick.

Bodyguard trait doesn't really help in the in battle bodyguarding since chances are when your mage line starts getting nuked you are already losing anyways. It's marginally useful at that if enemies do send assassins at you, basically it makes you immune to assassins which is comfy if not significant bonus.

They do, they are also by far the best Bogarusian unit so you recruit them regardless of their apparent mediocrity + as heavy cav they are still quite good overall and perform their role adequately.

Kailasa with a heavy bless can outrun its dom and then transition into really good troop buffs + summoned troops, so it's got a good midgame. It's like BL but with recruitable magic diversity instead of needing to summon all of it. Also, it literally has fv and coms too, though FV is way less valuable in EA than it is in other eras.

Ermor's problem is that they just don't snowball. They need deep research in weird paths like evo to get the most out of their wizards, but they don't have blood and their stacks are super vulnerable to late game battlefield clear. Lars helped them out a LOT, but they still really want matrices with no native E/S, which means you really want throne mages or to take that on your pretender. You expand well and you can hold off a rush well with gladiators, but you can't easily conquer someone if you don't bring friends, and you don't have an obvious win button for your next war even if you do. It's easy to survive to late game as Ermor as a 2nd rate power and even easy to tech up, but you get outscaled by anyone with blood or giants or both, and you don't take ground as fast as flyers or stealth nations which makes it hard to get the most value out of wars even if you're ganging up on someone. End result is that you definitely can do stuff with Ermor, they certainly have a toolkit to win fights or whatever, but it's hard to actually win games with them

Lamp spam is great if you're a nation that's secure in its midgame without spending F gems and can comfortably rush cons 6, but if you can pull that off as Ermor you're a diplo wizard. Normally you need to spend a bunch of F on elementals and because you can't easily use cons for thugs or whatnot it's a dangerous dip for your RP to get it early.

Stellar cascades is ass in dom5. Flaming javs + skellyspam is something, but unlike what most flaming arrow builds opt for, which is 1 wizard + a bunch of cheap units, you need to bring more gold to a fight than your opponent if they have any relevant magic or a good bless on their own. Elementals alone can't carry you now that FR bless exists (to say nothing of mwps), and while an equite bless lets them expand blissfully, they can do that with little to no bless too. In fact, you can get 1.5 expansion parties/turn with ermor so that you need indy commands to even expand as hard as you can buy troops for, but that advantage is just making up for the fact that you Need to be bigger than the guy you're fighting to be equal in power.

/domg/ is diplo on easy mode, however your earlier point about needing matrices was spot on. It's hard being a troop nation without E for the troop buffs, but you could try getting Spectres, who will slot into communions, and you can thug the ones w/o E or S. Sauros can do a lot of work naked just by raiding with horde of skeleton to be honest. I've had many games where people just go AI from the sheer cancer of 20 raiding sauromancers. That being said I haven't tried melee raiding with sauros since they got their free invulnerability so I might give it a spin.

All attacks after Vine Shield charges for the turn were exhausted won't suffer entagling. Number of Vine Shield charges is equal to 2*(1+defender's Nature path+Growth scales in the province+Magic scales).

Anyone else print out their multiplayer game maps in huge formats (A0 format fits on a spot on my back wall in my room perfectly) and use various colored larger pins to keep track of military ownership and white and black pins to keep track of dominion in each province, and smaller pins of various shapes to keep track of generals, mages, assassins, scouts, etc..? Mine is full of sticky notes about potential troop movements, possible diplomatic moves, etc. as well. I haven't figured out an elegant way to map forts, labs and temples into it yet. I just use that yellow masking tape you use when painting and write the present infrastructure on it, but I'd prefer a reusable way that's still easy to see. Any ideas? Maybe I need a gf.
