Greetings Commanders, and a big ol' sorry for making everybody wait a week longer than usual. Chapter 12 of "On the Fringes" is out and begins on line 1792. This one also clocks in at just around 9.5k words. I wonder if I'm jamming too much into the story.

https://pastebin.com/3NGXxFe1

>We'd been in the Virginian wilds for a while now. Maybe a week? I couldn't remember. The days were just sort of blurring together, punctuated only by moonless nights on account of the forest canopy. The trees were densely packed and the utter lack of any trails made navigation difficult. We could have taken some service roads a little further if the car had still worked. It had only lasted for a dozen more miles anyway; the power cut out even though the battery was still charged, just like Penny said it sometimes would. As such we were forced to continue on foot just like before, only now I found myself wishing again for the comfort of air conditioning, upholstered seats, and a smooth ride, even if it had only lasted just a little longer.

Feedback is always appreciated as usual; I read the good and the bad!

1.5 years into my Loknar-only campaign, and I'm having a rough go at it. Already lost a ton of hands, plus three vessels.

Excellent! I really like the pacing of your story, with a bit of relief after the very intense moments of the last chapter, at least til the second half.
I find the idea of ziptying a giant snake very amusing, considering she could wreak havoc without her arms just fine.
Also, first time I've ever seen pic related, wonder what's up with that. I've seen way saucier stuff that doesn't get flagged.
Anyway yeah, great chapter.

So, I'm still messing around with getting good with Piratez, but basically I should always be kicking out booze with my runts unless I need them to be processing captives or producing equipment to fuel my conquest, yeah?

I'm far too dumb to be a pirate queen.
>>
>>309986439
pretty much yeah runts are primarily there to make you money first and all the other projects are secondary, first useful item that makes good income is x-grog and later on there'll be plenty of choice for that
however don't worry about being efficient in this mod, you can pace your own difficulty and it's unlike nucom or long war in that regard there will always be easy missions available no matter how poorly you're doing

Are slave soldiers worth it, or should I stick to peasants early on?
>>
>>310018520
they have slightly better starting stats than peasants but the male route is strictly inferior to the gal one, you pick male path only if you want challenge
>>
>>310018618
I picked Snoo Snoo and now I am committed. Pray for me, sister.
>>
>>310018520
If you mean path selection, you'll be able to recruit slave soldiers later with gal path anyway. It's more about early game and locking some later tech, with gal path being superior, as its name suggests.

maybe? I never tried, hover suit has 100% burn damage and there is map wide aura that deals some burning damage so I don't know if you can stay alive that long in that armor

A man of culture that King. Was a nice read! Just found two spelling errors. Uncapitalized "it" in the middle of line 5. Near the end of line 13 "His scaled" is most likely a misspelling of "scales", yeh?

Overall I enjoyed it. Really loved the parts when it was from his perspective!

The dialogue absolutely feels better to read and flows more like natural conversations would. One other tip that I forgot to mention in my last big post was that little actions that break up the dialogue can add more to characterization as well. If someone were saying something with a drink in their hand and they paused to swirl said drink while staring into the liquid, it could indicate thoughtfulness , apprehension, or even playfulness depending on the scene's tone.
>>
>>310021685

>>310181257
you're unlikely to have a gun capable of piercing their armor early on, anytime you find something you can't kill use explosives, melee or fire
>>
>>310182354
Oh okay, so I'm not doing something wrong, it's just they're tough motherfuckers.
The carbines do do a way better job than muskets did, though. Damage on every third shot as opposed to every sixth shot is nice.
>>
>>310182504
well the way most guns work in openxcom is that they deal 0-200% of their listed damage and osiron has like 50 armor on the front so uac carbine has a very slim chance of dealing any damage and muskets are really bad at going through armor so their armor is more effective against muskets compared to most other guns
>>
>>310182785
But, at least with luck, even just a starter bomb under them will blow them to hell (or put them in bleed out).
>>
>>310182956
yes the black powder bombs and molotovs are an excellent early game problem solvers
>>
>>310181257
Melee weapons or throwing axes should do the trick. Out of early available firearms, something like boarding gun, magnum or AMG with homebrew plastasteel ammo should work.
>>
>>310184303
Does melee ignore armor or something?
>>
>>310184396
no but melee deals damage much higher damage than most guns and most enemies are not resistant to cutting/stabbing damage type, starting ax deals 50 cutting and with damage bonuses it can deal like 90, it will be a long LONG time before you find a gun that can deal 90 damage but ax is right there for you from day 1

Ok, that sounds ominous, but alright. Another thing: What is a good early game pistol? I got XCOM 2 and found out it has a pretty big section at NexusMods. I wanted to check in with you guys if you think it fits in the lore/feel of the game and ask a few questions. I have not played XCOM 2 before, so it would be my first playthrough. Sorry for the wall of text
I am a real sucker for guns, so I was glad to find lots of mods that include guns. What caught my eye were the mods by Amuab001pl since he says they will not replace any existing weapons, which is very cool since it adds more content and an absolute must because I don't want to "rob" the original games guns. They are mostly firearms as we know them today, so a G36, an AK etc. But since XCOM 2 has us playing as guerilla forces, I think it also makes sense in canon to have "old" firearms used by rebel forces. I also wanted to get the Halo weapons pack since I think it doesn't look too wacky, Halo weapons themselves look like they could exist just like that in 10 years, so I thought about including them. Does the Nigel Reach Weapons mod replace any existing weapons? Also, should I install the Total Advent Weaponry pack? Apparently those are the weapons used by the enemy, so if I am a guerilla force and manage to ambush and kill an Advent force, the first thing I do is loot their equipment and weapons. So I think it makes sense in canon, right?
Also, do those weapon packs have proper reload animations or do they collide with the flow of the game in any way?
Other mods I want to get is this mod which increases nationalities and background lore. Nothing wrong with that, right? Next would be Stop Wasting My Time and Evac All. I could see how Evac All will be helpful, since apparently you need to ecac every troop individually and this just saves time. But I have a questions about SWMT, what do you think about it? Apparently it removes pauses after actions, but do you think those pauses are needed and the mod makes the game feel rushed or "sped up"?
Anything else I should get?
Thanks.

Reload animations should be the same as always. If you wanna go full hardcore lore you can't use ADVENT weaponry because they self-destruct in the hands of other users. I can't say if anything about the evac all mod, but you can always disable it. Once you're very familiar with the game you can pick up something along the lines of a smarter ADVENT AI. Cosmetics are a good thing overall for customisation, and you can find quite a bit on steam.
>>
>>310216759
I mean it would be, if tactical missions didn't play basically the same as X1. LW2 missions do make you act a lot more like a guerilla org, but still.

Alright, that's good. What I feared it just that he would just idly stand there and his weapon magically reloads.

Oh, that's actually pretty cool. Yeah, if I remember correctly the alien weapons in XCOM 1 did as well. Alright, I won't use that mod then.
>Cosmetics are a good thing overall for customisation, and you can find quite a bit on steam.
Yeah, I found some helmets that look pretty neat. As long as they aren't too crazy, I'll roll with those, same with things like more nationalities, more backstories, those are just things I think I can't go wrong with. Unless the backstories are really silly like "He fights because he wants capture a Viper and make her his gf" or something like that.

Are you sure? It has the same 10% dodge it had for a while now.
You're probably fighting UFOs with +hit bonus, either +20 because of high-trained pilots, or the UFO itself has a bonus.
Either that, or you expect it to perform like barracuda.

Shielded armor only increases front armor. The way ballistics in this game works, you can get hit into side armor even when shot from dead front (it checks which of 90 degree sector of your hurtbox got hit).
So while it certainly helps, and shield itself is a good stun weapon for hard nuts, it's worse than you expect it to be.

>>310250192
I use hk with a thruster which brings it to 19% dodge so pretty close to 25% of barracuda but I see the difference, 125 reaction on loknarr gives 37% dodge and it used to give 42%, so combined 11% dodge difference and that's significant but still a regular escort or gunship from not star gods/mercs keep trashing my interceptor like it's made out of paper
so pilot dodge was certainly lowered but it also feels like accuracy of the enemy ships is higher than before the difference is staggering compared to my last run in L1 but looking at my old save files back then I also min maxed condemnations on most lokknarrs and they had ~135 reactions on average which gave 48% dodge
>>
>>310251380
Oh so they're for committing stylish suicide
>>
>>310244409
For your first playthrough you shouldn't add mods anyway. Exceptions are a few helmets, cosmetics, that's it. WOTC has enough customization of characters and weapons as well as weapon variety as it is. Adding Halo weapons just fucks with the overall setting. You wouldn't add an AK-47 into Star Wars either. XCOM is XCOM with its bulky weapons and everything and I wouldn't have it any other way.
>>
>>310251902
Right, there was slight pilot dodge nerf in L2, but it wasn't so big that the difference would be noticeable.
The difference between hk and barracuda is that you have half the firepower, so fight takes longer.
Escort is a bad example as it has +25 to hit, can't expect to take it down unscratched. The best way to go about military ships is to use 2-3 interceptors at once to minimize attrition.

Manstopper and Assault Pistol are both decent in early game. Scoped Magnum and Confederate Eagle are great once you get them. The Magnum actually remains useful for the whole game, with upgrades you can research later.
There's also the Suppressed Pistol, which is not very good for most troops, but does bonus damage if you have high Reactions. Hold alt and mouse over a weapon in the character inventory screen to see its actual damage range.

>>310317835
strategy layer
have all your haven on intel unless you have too many missions, then switch to recruit until your haven is full and always have a soldier there as liason
research "vulture" in gts rather quickly it's your main income source in early game, sell the elerium cores early the money is more important
do not skip weapon tiers you want all of them
for armor prioritize the exo/war suit because of the extra shredder gun it's usually more valuable than armor from predator/warden
don't be afraid to spend intel on important missions like supply raids or liberations
tactical layer
try to have shinobi on every mission concealment is strong and the class is just broken in general
don't bring sharpshooters to timed missions unless they have snap shot or you have no other choice
start leveling your officers early they take forever to train
get nanoscale vests on everyone it's an item that you'll use till the very end of the game
early game have he grenades on everyone and just blow everything the fuck up
late game have some sort of ammo equipped, for the most part damage items > survival items
it's ok to run away if you think you fucked up
don't forget to drop the god damn evac flare soon after breaking concealment
>>
What sort of playtime are you meant to hit early game milestones like workshop and school in xpiratez? I've got workshop in June but I tried to play this before and was too slow so more powerful factions became common and eventually killed my base
>>
>>310318660
Bumping for curiosity. I have no idea. I'm really bad at the game, but I'd love to learn. I'm hoping to salvage my first run without resetting because if it's a three digit hour experience I'd rather not have to put ten more hours in.
>>
>>310318660
there's some rng involved for loot in both of those cases but estimate like workshop about half year from the start and back to school within first year is somewhere I usually end up with, better way to gauge your progress is just increasing brainer count your starting lab has 12 capacity and you want to fill out each slot ASAP like it's really important but throughout entire game you want to raise that number to about 50 any more than that and you're probably overdoing it unless you know exactly what you're doing

well for reference 1 infamy = 333$ and as an example the tutorial topics like "#002" give 250 infamy or about 83k$ and 1 brainer costs 100k$ a month, every single research topic gives some infamy so even if something looks pointless research it and get some infamy to cover up maintenance costs

Pray for me. If I manage to end my game in failure by the end of this day of work, I will know that I was bad and dumb.
>>
>>310319824
Oh, a question that springs for that: once I get up to higher tech than a burrow, should I replace it with the others or just keep it?
>>
>>310320753
up to you I usually just scrap it to make room for something else, space in your first base is usually really tight so you don't want anything but essentials

>>310318280
what about supply. don't you need some havens on that
>>
>>310353457
supply job is mostly there after you liberate the region and there's nothing else to do there, before that it's rarely worth it
>>
>>310353879
do you do a lot of the supply missions then? I mostly skipped those.
>>
>>310354000
if they're possible to do so they're not like swarming with 1 day left but something around 3-4 days and low-ish activity then yeah you should do those not only you get loot you also destroy some of the advent legions on strategic layer
>>
>>310354135
Sorry I meant the missions where you grab loot. Not the missions that are advent bringing in troops.
>>
>>310355650
oh you mean smash and grab? yeah those are just normal mission you should be doing, they're boring and badly designed but you need that loot
>>
>>310343560

>>
>>310355740
Man, I found them incredibly frustrating, and felt like their rewards were shit. I'll try a game where I'm doing them though I guess.
>>
>>310356684
I know what you mean but the way lw2 is balanced you can't just skip missions because you don't like them, the only mission type I can think of that's acceptable to never do is sabotage the monument because often it actively hurts you by moving advent to a region you don't want them at but everything else if you detect it and you have the resources to do it you gotta do ALL the missions
>>
>>310356901
not that I don't believe you but everything I've read has said that you'll end up skipping most missions
>>
>>310357570
that's true but in context of you'll skip that mission because you can't do it not because you don't want to do it, that's the key difference

Aren't smash and grabs basically normal objective missions with evac? What's so frustrating about them? And if you think the reward for doing them is shit then that means that you can get by without them, right?
>>
>>310360250
not that anon but from my perspective smash and grab is boring because the mission is incredibly repetitive, there's always the building with loot somewhere in middle and after all the combat is done you have to do this tedious routine of run to the chests, open them, run back to the evac which often takes just as long as fighting the ayys and it just gets tedious, I'm sure they could've designed this mission in some better way
>>
>>310360250
I don't know if we're talking about the exact same thing. I'm playing lwotc, but the objective where you have to mark crates is a fucking nightmare for me. Constantly having to move forward and trigger pods and what not. I just dunno how to do it without fucking up and taking a ton of damage/losing people, or missing out on crates.
>>
So I just started XCOM 2 and after the tutorial am in my base. Apparently the commander in this game is the same as the one in XCOM, which just sounds like a horrible idea to me, isn't it? Not only did the commander already failed in the first game which led to the aliens subjugating earth, but he was also completely out of the picture for the last 20 years and has absolutely no clue about the state of the world, the enemy, the base, troops etc. I guess Central, the guy with the voice smooth as butter, led the resistance up until now and in my opinion he should just continue to do so. But then again, I guess the commander, we the player, are some kind of prodigy commander, the only hope for humanity like John Connor in Terminator.
>>
>>310360948
That sounds about right.

xcom2 is full of stupid shit like that. xcom1 wasn't a masterpiece in terms of story telling but it was a serviceable low key plot.

I managed to get workshop in late-April, and mutant alliance available to research in may-june. Maxed initial brainers in first month and, other than that, didn't exactly rushed for workshop.
It may vary depending on how lucky you are with mission spawn, of course.
>>
>>310320753
Burrow provides both animal and personal space, so until you get dedicated animal cages, you'll need at least 1 burrow.
Afterwards you can and should replace it.

Can it be that Time Turner only comes in effect after the tutorial phase is over? I don't like to be stressed too much, but I activated it twice now and still only got 8 turns.

Yeah those are two different missions, smash and grab is the one with the building, but the one with marked crates is called supply extraction. Not sure what I'd do to make SnG more interesting, maybe make the crates spread out throughout the entire map?

As for supply extraction, getting an aggressive team consisting of shinobis and flamethrower technicals has worked for me, and can consistently get at least 10 crates per mission. I like how you yourself choose the risk vs reward that you want to go for there.
>>
>>310374520

Only the first time. Once you interrogate them, you'll get the usual +10 infamy for a known captive.
So yeah, you just need to capture like 40 heavily armed and armored Ubers (and a government general in power armor) twice, and then you can have a positive (or at least near-zero) score.
The mission directly pays you several million, though, so the score isn't as much of an issue as it might look.

electroshock seems really good, especially considering how moving assaults forward can potentially trigger pods.
>>
>>310420531
electroshock is clearly the worst initial choice it combos well with chain lightning but it's a while till master sergeant perks, just grab a flashbang grenade on your assault does the same thing and with aoe to boot
lightning reflexes is the clear winner it's instantly useful throughout the whole game and slug shot is sometimes useful but when I picked it I constantly thought how much better it would be to have lightning reflexes
>>

>ignore the mission and take the point loss
>clear the mission and take the point loss (mitigated by the several million dolaros you get for successful completion)
>use the peasant-in-a-rail-pod trick to forfeit the mission
>just don't take the deal until you have MSDF
The weapons they sell are pretty good, though. You get autolasers at a point in game where you might not have regular lasrifles. If you have loads of money and think you could take the 2000 point penalty every now and then and still have positive score at the end of the month, it might well be worth it.

tiny drill only needs workshop space not workshop itself, I believe in standard base layout you can build one more extractor and you should have just barely enough space to finish the project

I presume they do, because it seems like everything does something secondary or even tertiary.

most projects in manufacturing require specific buildings for some projects, extractor allows you to distill hellerium and few other things and buildings also can fulfill requirements for other buildings, like refinery cannot be built unless extractor is present in the base already

So far I'm 6 hours into XCOM 2 and thr fact that my last session was 4 hours non-stop already shows that I love this game. The only things I can criticize is that I need to choose every character in my character pool individually to make them able to appear as soldiers instead of there just being a button that adds all of them (I found out the devs put themselves into it, pretty cool and funny) and that the soundtrack is pretty unremarkable, but other than that it is fantastic. Great gameplay in and outside of fights, high quantity and quality modding scene (which really evens some things out, like the rather meager vanilla weapon selection) and the story is surprisingly captivating as well, I guess it comes with the setting. I still don't know how I should feel about the Lost though. And of course it has the XCOM-moments (tm), of death and sacrifice. But what is hurting troop morale even more are 0 snek enxounters yet.

It's getting there. Two months after ADVENT's defeat and the fall if the Elders, a man previously living in total isolation on his hidden farm has his daily routine disrupted by an injured viper on the run.

There is no lewd yet and the snek girlfriend feels have only just begun to show after 12 chapters. It's a very slow buildup like the other story on my profile (but that one isnt XCOM). If you're looking for slice of life girlfriend stuff, this ain't it.
>>
>>310607702
Nah man, I'm not looking for smut. That sounds really interesting, I'll definitely give it a read.
>>
>>310573708
Not quite. It's about a guy named Liam that lives in bumfuck nowhere, living by himself off the grid with a monotone life away from ADVENT and any kind of civilisation. All safe and sheltered. The story takes place a few months after XCOM won. His life takes a weird turn when a wounded Viper gets into his chicken coup one day. After a series of unfortunate events he and the Viper tries to find some place safe and to call home, which leads them on an adventure together.

It's not a smut fic or lover thing, just an unlikely pair trying to survive. It's an emotional rollercoaster at times, but it sucks you in.

Doesn't look awful for a demo. Although the enemies look so much cooler compared to the animu grills.

>play a mode where you're supposed to live with your mistakes
>cheat to fix your mistake anyway
I mean, it's fine as long as you're having fun, but you can play normal mode with occasional reloads and save yourself from usual ironman troubles, like bugs or failed alt+f4 killing your run.
>>
>>310626401
Normal mode with self-imposed Iron Man is the way to go as the game is annoying unstable at the worst moments, especially highly modded. I'll make regular saves in case of crashes or lockups, but I won't use them unless such a thing happens and I live with any disasters.
>>
>>310623042
>play original XCOM
>see a 8% chance to hit but know that no matter how poor the shot is,I might still hit anyway due to how miss chance works
>>
>>310617605
yeah I get what you're saying. I just really wish there was like a move takeback or something to let you fix misclicks.
>>
>>310623042
are the hit percentages bullshit in xcom 2 or something? I miss so many fucking 80 percent chances. I mean I get how percentages work but come on
>>
>>310627832
this was meant for >>310626401
>>
>>310628087
They're not, for the most part. But they're hidden decimals on the code and it rounds up/down visibly, so something like 99.9% chance to hit will display as 100%, but you still have that 0.1% chance to miss which'll happen once in a blue moon.

The game actually does cheat in your favor on difficulties below Legend, however. For example, if you miss a shot, it'll add a hidden +15% chance to hit on that soldier's aim until they land their next shot, where it vanishes.
>>
>>310628929
Even on commander? Wew. I'd prefer if they showed that and told you that on the difficulty selector.
>>
>>310629193
It's very easy to disable with a quick .ini edit

Open <steam install directory>\steamapps\common\XCOM 2\XCom2-WarOfTheChosen\XComGame\Config\DefaultGameCore.ini

Search for "aimssist" and you'll then see it grouped by difficulty. Set the values(Except baseXCOMhitchance or you'll fuck yourself if it's below 1.0) to 0 or just clone them from Legend's difficulty setting and you'll be good to go.

The values and what they do are adding chance to YOUR hit for each miss you suffer(until you hit), reducing the ayys hit chance if multiple attacks hit the same guy in one round till one misses them, buffing your hit if you fall below a certain squad size, nerfing the alien hit if below a certain squad size. Commander difficulty only has the miss streak buff by default.

>endgame's in sight, baby
>routine snakeman mission, this time with quite a few of them clustered in a building near the skyranger on turn 2
>have rear-commander load up her blaster launcher, since what's the worst that could happen?
>resulting miss wipes out ten soldiers
>only survivors are two veterans and two rookies who were outside prior to launch
Live by explosives, die by explosives. Guess that's just karma for always leveling buildings with large rockets.

Is there a facility which lets my soldiers start with a squaddie rank, so not on recruit but with already a class. Hey /xcg/. I'm having a bug with OXCE, where if I play with OpenGL enabled (IE, use any display filter) my screen goes all whack. Weirdly enough if I take a screenshot with F12 the output looks normal.

I don't think it's a bug with my version of OXCE, since I updated from 6.4.2 to 6.6.1 and still had the same problem. Maybe it's a bad driver? Here's some shit from the log file:

Default rendering is using your CPU for graphics, while any filter marked with * is using hardware acceleration. So there should be something with your graphic card drivers.

keep in mind BPBs are also heavier, which costs more strength to carry and also means less throwing range

explosives are a decent way to deal with armor, but don't neglect throwing weapons (javelins, throwing axes, etc.) - you can craft them quite early and the things' damage scale like crazy, really fast

are base defense missions bugged in xpiratez? it says i'm getting morale every turn but all of my gals have been going insane every turn for 40 turns waiting for the last remaining rat man to reveal himself

>>310732675
once you accept that the original x-com percentages are not your actual chance to hit (or even a percentage are all), you're fine.

>>310734021

Not one step back, Gals get morale boost (or something to that effect).

Since I'm a gigantic faggot, how do I counter gals (and my free soldiers) snapping if a battle drags on?
>>
>>310734493
oh, that buff wasn't there last time I played.

>>310734605
pretty sure javelins can one-shot the early osiron dudes.

as far as morale, the best way to keep it up is getting kills frequently, and having one high-ranking soldier present in the fight
>>
>>310734835
So it's sorta like a very primitive chain of command where you need a Squad Leader to manage da galz?
Even if it only buys me one turn before, "WHAT THE HELL?!?" and "IT'S WRONG, IT'S DANGEROUS-"
>>
>>310734835
>>310734605
you can also train Bravery. you can do this by having the trainees heal people's wounds (% chance for +10 bravery), or by actually having them panic (I think there's a % chance to gain bravery if they recovered from panic during the mission)
>>
>>310735095
i just managed to deal with the rat and every single gal got 10 bravery
almost worth
>>
>>310734605
and watch your freshness, don't send gals into combat with too much missing freshness, or their morale/turn will go down (among other thinggs)
>>
>>310735242
I'm going to take a wild guess and say that freshness needs time to recover between missions, and I've been giving my best soldiers PTSD all this time.
>>
>>310735232
mass panics are a great way to train BRA, yeah. there are ways to force that (you can nerve gas your dudes with grenades and shit) but that's basically faggotry
>>
>>310735370
yes, you recover X freshness/day, X being the freshness recovery of your best freshness recovery building. i think it's like 5 or 6 at the beginning of the game
>>
>>310735018
basically, your commanding officer applies a multiplier to morale effects from the battle - both negative and positive.

e.g. if a kill grantes +10 morale, having an officer might increase that to 20 or something like that.

keep your officer alive though, or you're gonna take a big morale hit
>>
>>310736040
Neat.

A reason to keep my high ranking officers out of the hospital beds.
>>
>>310737547
just remember the bonuses don't stack, it will always only use the highest ranking soldier that is alive in the fight (so you don't have to send multiple Captains or w/e if you don't want to)
>>
>>310737680
Honestly with how many times my guys get owies and need to take a week off, I'd need to have the fuckers on a rotation just so I don't have to send a bus full of peasants like my first run.
>>
>>310737829
are you healing wounds before ending the battles? any extra hp your dudes have at the end means less recovery time. (the best tactic is still not getting hit)
>>
>>310738339
Yes, but that only adds a few HP. It turns ten days into a week, or thirty days into twenty.
It's still good practice to have an officer rotation because, unless I'm going to scum like the weak willed slut I am, there will be owies.

>>

>>
>>310740041
metal armor is sexy. assault smg, not so much. good for peasants though (because it's lighter than the tommy gun)
>>
>>310739438
Sectoweed and boom fruit farms are the earliest source or respective plants.
>>
speaking of tommy gun, make sure you do every temple raid mission, and pray that the church priest carries one. once you research it you can buy more with Contacts:Merchants. that fucking thing will carry you gals through a lot
>>
>>310740718
I have like ten of them even before research...
but this is my fourth run.
I didn't know the Tommy Gun was in this mod before this run.
This run really is blursed.
>>
>>310740718
never really found much use for most smgs or rifles in piratez, shotguns are the kings of the early game just throw a bomb at anything that's armored or shoot it in the butt
>>
>>310758259
why bother with rifles when the horde of peasants duel wielding sawed off shotguns does the trick
>>
>>310758259
Automatic weapons are better for stat train, as shotguns usually kill in one shot, and only the first pellet is used for determining stat gains, i.e. only the first hit/miss in a batch matters.
>>
>>310770458
but if you use shotguns you don't need firing accuracy, and the actually good automatic guns like smartgun/smartrifle use same accuracy formula as shotguns and firing accuracy is again not needed, firing accuracy as stat sucks because 100% doesn't guarantee shit
>>
>>310770793
>shotguns
armor is a thing, you know
>>
>>310741525
>naturally found 10 tommy guns
sounds weird, it was pretty rare ;ast I played
>>
>>310771707
like I said use explosives or shoot the butt, people not realize this but when you shoot >6 pellets at something in close range shotguns tend to reliably take care of the 0-200% roll effectively dealing double damage against armor for example early game double barreled shotgun can roll up to 20 pellets at 0-40 against 25-30 butt armor of most armor wearing humans or use slug ammo which does perfectly fine against armor from any side
>>
>>310772084
close range isn't always an option
>>
>>310772202
that's why you have explosives anon, things that go boom are good trust me
>>
>>310772240
expensive, heavy, inventory-intensive
>>
>>310772384
>he grenade 1x1 3 weight 750$
>black powder bomb 1x1 5 weight 100$
holy fuck you're right how could anyone afford valuable inventory space to carry any of those or even better afford the luxury of owning these
>>
>>310770793
>firing accuracy as stat sucks because 100% doesn't guarantee shit
Anon, I don't even...
Firing accuracy is directly related to your hit chance, the higher it is, the higher the chance to get minimum bullet spread. You only miss 100% shots if you try to shoot targets behind a good cover. Use f10 more often, and you'll soon learn to judge your hit chance better.
>>
Mutant Pogroms only have a -100 infamy hit...is it better to let them despawn so I don't take a larger hit when, on the huge maps, lots of people are dead before I can even find them?
>>
>>310774581
>100% chance to hit
>possibility to miss exist
>therefore it's not 100% chance
what is there not to understand
you cannot avoid all the impossible angles often targets standing on hills are impossible to hit with >100% shots and there is no cover there so using f10 to look at bunch of blocks is completely pointless
>>
>>310775123
Welp, if you need an excuse to use shotguns and grenades, you do you.
>>
>>310772569
grenades can miss, and if you're on shotguns you're spending a lot of inventory slots of shells, too
>>
>>310775098
If you can clear pogrom, you can loot some early good guns there. Even if most civilians die, you end up with neutral score as long as you don't take losses.
But if you intend to skip it, then ignoring a -100 pogrom is better.
>>
>>310776721
>grenades can miss
and so does every other form of attack in this game, what kind of argument is this?
>>
>>310776721
grenades can miss but early on they're a heck of a lot more likely to hit than shooting, even with bad throwing
and inventory space isn't really a problem with shotguns even with 2 shot ammo
>>

other attack forms don't have a clip size of 1

Man, this is really, really good! I have read the first 3 chapters and it completely got me hooked. The pacing is really good, how it doesn't rush into things, but it is also never boring. Like in that Charles Bukowski interview where he said writing must never be boring and each line must have it's own juice. Are writing for a long time now? You must be, I think.
The only thing I have a problem with is envisioning Liams estate. Am I correct to think it is like an old farm in the countryside, so you got one big barn house, where he lives then another smaller shed for the animals and outside there are growing veggies and stuff or is everything indoors in one huge futuristic building?
>>
>>310785241
yes let's ignore that javelins have like 9 tiles of range compared to map wide of he grenade or 16 for black powder bomb
let's also ignore that you need stats for it to deal damage and explosives do not, good luck arming peasants with those and peasants are just fine with black powder bombs, boom fruits, stick grenades etc.
and also let's ignore that taking javelins out of backpack takes 20 units unlike 4 for grenade out of shoulder pocket and not all early outfits have a backpack
but yeah they're the same right?

are you even reading my posts anon? what do stat formulas have to deal with the fact you need decent stats before javelins become useful? peasants can NEVER hit 60 str retard and probably won't hit anything at the starting 30 throwing they have, hands can also start with <20 str and it'll be equally useless
javelins as a solution for armored guys is one of the most retarded things I've read in this thread about piratez, there's literally 1000 better ways of doing it

>>
>>310787323
you suggested javelins to someone talking about the early game, why wouldn't you be thinking of peasants?
>>
>>310787880
javelins can be crafted pretty early on, around the same time (or sooner, depending on research path) as you can buy grenades.

Freshly-recruited peasants have like 17 strength, on a good day. Between a shotgun (the only effective weapon they can use, given their TUs and Firing skill), shells, and maybe a bandage or two, there's little to no carrying capacity for grenades. If they can carry one, theyir low THR skill means that's not even reliable. Early game peasants don't handle high-armor targets, period.
>>
>>310788602
a domestic shotgun, an extra 6 shells, a bandage, and a grenade is only 17 weight and 3/7 inventory slots
even with low throwing skill it's more accurate than any gun you'd realistically give them, long range, low weight, cheap, small, and decent against armour

They are the same size because Firaxis was lazy. Those are most likely child or teenage vipers.

Yeah, the scientist at the beginning said that they are "Perhaps at an earlier stage of growth", but when I noticed they are the same size I wasn't really sure.
>They are the same size because Firaxis was lazy.
Maybe they just grow differently than humans. You know, how a dog that lives to be 15 years old grows incredibly fast in the first 1-2 years and the not at all. Probably it's the same with them. And they can take well less damage because they don't have wear any body armor or their scales are still soft at that age or whatever. Or Firaxis really just thought "Hey, we already got a model, so..."

Thanks! I have been writing for a long while, probably something close to 20 years. Never published or anything, it's always been just a hobby for me. Cut my teeth on fanfiction and just kept doing it with games I liked. Never got into fanfic for books or movies, I don't know why. I have written some original short stories with the sole outlier being The Knight's Ward.

It's an older house built in the 50s, upgraded and maintained by the grandparents up until the invasion. There was no big barn, just the large shack there is now, but it used to be an indoor stable for the three large animals the grandfather owned. They passed away between then and the invasion, after which the shack was converted into a large coop to keep the chickens indoors and out of sight with the help of a makeshift camo net.

Behind the house is a very small square plot about half the width of the house where he grows whatever will take root, and where he has a handful of plastic barrels for water collection during rains or carching morning condensation. On the left side of the house is the exterior cellar entrance.

I'm not a landscaper or a farmer so I did some very cursory research and tried to wing it as best as I could.
>>
>>310790212
>only 17 weight
exactly, now check the base strength of peasants. and if you wanna use Hunter outfits that adds weight, too. anyway, grenades are not useless obviously, but throwing weapons are extremely good (for gals)
>>
>>310801475
Wow, that's a long time to be commited to one hobby. But yeah, you could easily tell that you have so much experience.
Thanks for the further explanation. I'll definitely look forward to the following chapters. It is a real pageturner but I have to limit myself because I want to draw out the enjoyment so I'll read a couple chapters per day and look forward very much how the story goes.
I am really interested and if you don't feel like it, it's totally cool as well but can you tell me how you approach your stories? What are the steps from having nothing to a finished chapter of From The Fringes? Or for example do you already know how it end? And did you think of the characters before the story or the other way around? Do you write the entire chapter in a rough format first and then edit it to perfection or do you write 1 sentence and then edit it afterwards? I read the guy who wrote I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream wrote the entire thing in one sitting and didn't change anything from his first draft, I always thought this is absolutely insane.

XCOM 2 brainlet here. Got the complete game with all the bells and whistles and I recently started adding WoTC-compatible mods to spice up my gameplay. I browsed the Steam Workshop and checked the pastebin but there's nothing that completely jumps out at me aside from A Better Advent.

Are there any gameplay mods that fit in snugly into the game's mechanics? I don't need anything radical, just something to spice up some encounters every now and then, and I'd appreciate some personal recommendations.
Also some cosmetic mods because those few that I have are already lacking for me.
>>
>>310809615

The enemies by Claus are fun.
>>
>>310809615
Other anons probably know way better than me, so those are purely personal recommendations I use as well.
There are lots of weapon mods, the biggest being CVWeaponPack and Resistance Firearms which add a lot of real live guns, but there are also smaller ones like the Black Ops 3 and Halo Reach pack. They have the same stats as your normal weapons so they aren't gamebreaking or anything but I love the variety they give you, because normally you'd only have one or two tier 1 weapons which is really lacking and with mods you got way more. Some even visually represent upgrades. Resistance forces using "old" weapons also makes sense and the halo weapons don't look completely out of place either, also some may disagree.
What I like especially is the molotov coctail mod. It adds one that you can take instead of the grenade and I love using it. Quality of life mods I use are Stop Wasting My Time, which is regarded as a must-have mod. EvacAll is nice as well. If you sort the steam library by category and most downloaded you should find other things to your liking.
>>
>>310809615
I recommend you get some of the map mods lying around for more variety, they help a lot.

https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=1122839748

This guy and Musashi have done a bunch of WOTC mods and I recommend going over there stuff. Some of them are basic, such as adding some extra traits or bug fixes, while others include some huge elements like adding in third factions to sitreps, like having one of the Reaper, Templar, or Skirmishers have a squad of allies show up in a mission to assist you under AI control, or even factions independent from anyone.

Personally, I highly recommend the mod to allow sitreps on every mission and extra sitrep variety. It Greatly increases mission diversity in my opinion.

A couple unrelated ones I advise are fair lost targeting so they have 50/50 of hitting XCOM or Advent instead of 30/70, and melee headshots on lost so melee fighters aren't super gimped against them.

So, with literally nothing on a page:

After posting an update, I just sit and think about whatever feedback I've gotten and use it to improve where the story is going, when applicable. I don't do any writing during these short period, only brainstorming. Afterwards that I just sit down and get to work, sometimes putting out a couple hundred words a day to several thousand. I stop every so often and reread what I've gotten so far to check for continuity or lapses in logic. If I find something I'll edit it then and there. Otherwise, I only check for typos and such after I'm done. After that, I sit on the finished chapter for a night and think about what I've written, then reread it aloud right before posting as a final check.

I don't have a rough draft, a 2nd draft, and a final draft. Everything I put out is a first draft with edits made along the way.

I do know how a story will begin and end before I start writing it. It's always the middle part that I work out along the way, though once I'm far enough into the story I have a generally good idea of what's going to happen. I'm there now with OtF; from here on out I know what's happening at all times and I have a pretty clear roadmap to my ending.

I don't understand RNG. I decided to reinstall XCOM EW Long War and I feel crazy. I've missed so many high percentage open shots in the first 10 missions. I modded the game to give my rookies better aim but I'm still missing open shots and it's killing my men. I flashed/flanked an outsider, missed a 97 and he killed everyone. Did the ini changes go through or is the aim hard coded? The aliens are hitting several low end 40s and 30s but my men won't hit a flanked 70ed. I've been playing for 2 days straight. These soldiers aren't reliable at all.

Taking grenade out of backpack also takes 20 units, your point is what exactly? You start with 4 javelins in your hand and you don't need to reload for a while, while with grenades you have to spend extra TU after every throw.

Against anything that bounces buckshot and starter rifle rounds, the Cutlass guarantees you're going to actually do some damage.
I wouldn't recommend it against ninjas because of their shoot you twice with a shotgun no jutsu, but still.
If it isn't facing you, or it's terrible at reactions, Swords delete bad guys.

Also how DO you deal with ninjas? I always take at least one loss trying to defend Loknar farms against them. I know sniper armor and other stuff with spot helps, but by the time I get that unlocked I've usually taken so many ninja-related casualties that I just refuse to go fight them
>>
>>310868335
Step one:
Find them, preferably with a peasant or someone so tough that being shot in the fucking face won't be instantly lethal This person can bait out the reaction fire at such a range that a lethal hit is unlikely (or just rush blindly toward the enemy in an attempt to locate as many as possible)

Step two: Assess situation: can they be approached from behind? Is there cover to prevent the four others I can't see from shooting my dude?

Step three(A): Throw grenades at them if I am not confident in my ability to approach without being skewered from multiple angles, even molotovs work because fire related panic is good.

Step Three(B): If an approach is possible and my soldier won't get four wayed while stabbing the guy, I run a melee fighter over up to their rear and start slashing. Ninjas have good reactions and probably good melee, so attack them from behind to avoid their high evasion chance.

Step Four: Pray to Allah or savescum because you still might be fucked.
>>
>>310865787
I usually use swords on new gals, at least until they max reaction using it, and then switch to axes. They have considerably more damage and good condemnation.
>>310868335
High-caliber shotty, like heavy shotgun, melee with trained gals, or set them on fire so they surrender. Once you unlock magnum, they drop almost like normal humans.
Try to avoid night fights with them.

Man there is some really nice stuff in there. Can't wait for mods to update. The melee terrain dame will finally make dreadnoughts useable in 40k mod. Imagine stomping around smashing up houses and heretics, never worrying about getting stuck again.

Maximum throw distances is a bit of a cop-out I feel. The problem is that grenades are too light and throwing is too accurate. Feels like every enemy is a pro baseball player. Rebalancing this is a better solution than a flat maximum range.

>>
>>310894362
there are already formulas in place that determine throwing range, though. and certain throwables having different ranges when underwater just makes sense
>>
>>310895171
Underwater throwing range is global multiplier. But you can also set maximum range cap (usual strength formula still applies) for both above and underwater.
Also as far as piratez and XCF are concerned, to my understanding, their underwater is technically above-water, just made to look like underwater.
>>
>>310839620
I mean do you genuinely not understand RNG or is it just pissing you off? Theoretically you could miss 99.9999999 percent chance shots, that you took once a second, until the day you died.

Holy shit guys, I had the Tetris Effect with XCOM 2 last night. If you haven't heard of it, it was a study where people with very strong dementia were given Tetris to play for hours and the scientist were really surprised that they could remember the game on the next days and it was because they dreamed of it and also about a kid who played Tetris almost non stop for a week and at night he saw blocks falling. Supposed to be some interesting thing about the brain, visualization and dreams or whatever. But long story short, I played XCOM 2 extensively yesterday and I actually dreamed of XCOM 2 that night, about the battle phase exactly how it was ingame. First thing that shit ever happened to me with any game.

Chapter 4-6 highlights
Character interactions were really cute and heartfelt as in the first 3 chapters too.
Last line of chapter 3 was really beautiful and memorable.
Vee learning to pronounce English in a Mettalica shirt was cute
Eating chicken scene
Vee saving Liam from the resistance units and the fallout of the fight. I fucking knew from the very start, when they first showed up, that they would be evil. Well, not really evil but I knew they would start shit.
Writing and pacing is great as always, read through it in one sitting for like 1,5 hours, which is really nice because books for some reason usually can't keep my attention for more than a handful of pages at most. Chapter 6 was a bit weaker than 4 and 5, but probably because there was so much high intensity stuff going on beforehand and 6 was about dealing with the fallout. Looking forward to tomorrow.

what's the best way to deal with the sewers? every base defense involves me searching everywhere for the last remaining guy

dogs have motion scanner and will make it easier to find them but there are no real good solutions once niggers are down there, best way to not deal with sewer niggers is to prevent base defense from happening or rush super hard to try to clear the hideout on turn 2-3

If you're not opposed to cheating then
you can use debug mode (Ctrl+D) to see make the entire map (and all enemies) visible. If you want it even faster, then with debug mode on you can select a unit and press Ctrl+W to warp them to the cursor so you don't have to waste 10 turns chasing them. If it's been 10+ turns and I still can't find the last one or two fuckers running around then I don't considering cheating

My guy, I earn 880 bucks a month from my apprenticeship. You really don't need much. Admittedly, the prices probably raised, but I got an old bench from my dad, two dumbbells and a barbell and am doing alright. My most expensive piece of lifting equipment is easily whey. if you were to pick one of the codexes that give you chainmail early on the effect would be almost the same and there would be no randomness involved, and not that plate mail is invincible one of landed ships early on could carry a light cannon and delete your plate gal in one unlucky shot or go to pogroms and get fucked by rpg it's really not that big of a deal

In the meantime, XCF 1.6 is up. Slightly shortened summary:
>New missions: UAC Weapon Lab, UAC Office, X-Com Slander (Shared Elerium Explosives).
>New units: UAC Engineer, UAC Manager, Alien Small Plasma Turret
>New craft weapon: Pike Launcher.
>New UFO: MiB Strike Ship.
>New maps
>More bloat
>New ufopedia graphics and sprites
>Completely redesigned how AI units work (now they need Alenium Shards to be produced, but can be revived after "death").
>Units should now react to melee attacks as well.
>Melee weapons now can target terrain and the kukri is now a melee weapon.
>Throwing things underwater now decreases the range. (anon/n: does it?)
>Men in Black streamlined and now with their own X-Com base assault mission.
>Reviewed and fixed various armor resistances.
>Organic units are now weakly susceptible to EMP damage.
>Chryssalid attack won't work if it doesn't do any damage ().
>Rats have psi vision and better stealth.
>Boomer Organs can now be made from Zombie Parasites and are a bit stronger.
>Uncoupled Mass Drivers from Gauss weapons.
>Skulljack now really doesn't need Psi Skill.
>Alien Bomb can now be recovered and used.
>Miniguns somewhat debuffed. (a/n: see >>310896568 )
>Renamed Small Launcher bombs to minibombs for clarity.
>Increased the price of some X-Com crafts.
>Temporarily disabled the Phase Drive item as necessary for Reptoid ships construction.
>Tweaked Enforcer stats. (a/n: as if )
>Dogs, rats and AIs now have their own "ranks" to easier discern them.
>Minor fixes and additions.
