Dust: An Elysian Tail

Some of the dialogue can be a bit cringe but the art direction, exploration and platforming are outstanding. We'll worth $10 or however much it is on Steam these days
>>
>>638378151
The japs have been killing it lately. Elden ring and totk are some of the best adventure games we've ever had.
>>
>>638378151
saddest part of this series is that this is the very last time of adventure in Middle Earth, after LoTR all of the fantasy races go extinct or disappear and magic leaves the world to make way for the grey dominion of humanity. I'll never understand why Eru/Yahweh chose this course for the world, or maybe it's just a fantastical rationalization for the disenchantment of the world from a heavily religious man. Grim, Feanor was right

Not the conventional answer, but Octopath II gave me the feeling of adventure. Start as your chosen protag, go around picking up others, and venture the world at your own pace. Going into an area a dozen levels higher than you and barely scraping through to the next town always felt rewarding, especially since you know there's new quests to find and townspeople to interact with. Treading into some cave/dungeon off the beaten path and finding a boss and/or treasure that gives you an entirely new strategy in fights. Finding out that due to all this exploration you've accidentally cleared a dozen quests before even accepting them.
It's not for everybody, but I was thoroughly entertained for 80 or so hours, and I didn't even do the superboss.

FF6/chrono trigger, Windwaker/OOT/MM/TP, elden/Dark souls 1/demons, Dragon age origins, Kotor 1&2, ICO games, too many to name

Point any clickys like monkeys island and sierra games do it for me too

I try to get that feeling from ttrpgs, but sadly everybody is too busy wanking over character builds and nobody cares about exploring or adventuring anymore.

I want a high fantasy open world game where you have a party traveling around a huge land doing quests on a mission to defeat a Dark Lord. There's all these LOTR games being made every so often and none are like that at all when it's perfect.

Strangely though that photo does give me a feeling of comradery and adventure. Thank you anon.

Dragon's Dogma for the best video game adaptation of the monomyth.
The Witcher 3 in regards to worldbuilding and side stories.

>everybody is too busy wanking over character builds and nobody cares about exploring or adventuring anymore
I hate that, too. I'll spend a week or two brainstorming characters and crafting one that I can slot into the DM's world naturally, I'll make an entire backstory and hand it over to him to incorporate (or not) however he wants, and then every other motherfucker takes double the time figuring out how hardest to metagame and make the strongest party possible. That shit is so incredibly boring. Interesting Party > Strong Party every time. Treating the DM like an enemy instead of trusting him to play to your strengths is how campaigns go to die and I'm so sick of it.

Beyond Good and Evil
ARK (when you play new maps for the first time)
>>
>>638380951
Exploration was the only fun part about it and the world felt soules. IDk how all modern games manage to do it. Is it graphics geting too realistic/good resulting in generic feeling?
>>
>>638378151
Link's awakening and a link to the past for me, 2D Zeldas capture that feeling better.
Morrowind too. Planning to explore a section of the map or a trail you've never wandered into, prepping your spells like levitation, water walking, underwater breathing and fortify acrobatics to help you traverse the land and the water, help you look for treasure in caves with night eye, hauling ass back to a city or town under the rain and selling your wares, sitting around an Inn and reading a book you found.

No one will acknowledge this because muh indie tumblr artstyle but carto by a country mile. no other game can replicate the feeling of knowing nothing of your surroundings and slowly mastering/using the terrain and resources to your advantage as you continue to explore these foreign and often deeply cultural lands. it skips the retarded "muh scale" problem by making the cartography map change the landscape so you will always feel like you have gone on a grand journey even with a small set of tiles because of how many times those tiles are traversed and how many dynamic uses they have. finally you must learn the cultures and customs of the people living in the land to conquer the challenges present in the wilderness. Objectively the best adventure exploration game of all time is CARTO
>>
>>638378151
Your best bet is an mmo, even if it's "dead." Feels like the only game genre that has big enough worlds that you can explore around in.

The best you've got are old JRPGs and CRPGs. But if you've lost your child's heart, you'll never appreciate them like we did growing up. It's hard to feel that way again though, since so much of the charm, at least for me, came from the fact that I was one of the only kids in a 100 mile radius playing the games I had. It felt like a much more personal experience.

If all fails, you can always pick the ttrpg of your choice and play solos using oracles (Mythic GM Emulator is the most widely used). You don't get the social experience, if you play vidya in the first place that shouldn't matter too much.

The stuff of legends.

We all know its Elden Ring and in their hearts the contrarians do too. The dystopian tech version of this meme is Cyberpunk 2077. If Tears of The Kingdom was on good hardware with a competent writing team along with a dev team willing to put some more work in it could have been the ultimate game for this type of feeling but sadly it fell short for me. Onto waiting for Elden Ring 2 now...
