Considering trying to make an Arch machine since M$ is getting more shit but I don't want to give up my games, art programs, or other insanity. I've played with Kali for school and work a little bit, so I know my way around a CLI, but how good/bad of an idea is using BlackArch as my gaming and work rig?

Yeah mangohud is great for that, paired with wayland and dxvk to disable ingame vsync. Perfect frames always on time.
>>

>BlackArch
Never heard of it. Don't use rolling release unless you boot up every couple of days minimum.
>work
>arch
As a new user you're almost inevitably going to break something, don't start out with arch.
>>
>>638376639
Personally I use mangohud in every game with
>fps_limit_method=late
in .config/MangoHud/MangoHud.conf. Technically that option prefers lower latency over perfect frametimes, but kde wayland usually gives me perfect 8.3/16.6ms frametimes even with
>force lowest latency
enabled in system settings -> display and monitor -> compositor. I think gnome has a similar low latency wayland mode. Then combine that with
>d3d9.presentInterval = 0
>dxgi.syncInterval = 0
in dxvk.conf to globally force disable ingame vsync in all dx9-11 games. I have a single dxvk.conf that I point all games to with the DXVK_CONFIG_FILE env var, but dxvk will also automatically look for a dxvk.conf in the same directory as the game executable.

The only downside when fps limiting with mangohud is that you need to set multiple fps limits e.g.
>fps_limit=120,60,0
and toggle between them ingame depending on performance and if >60 breaks stuff. Also dxvk and magohud can't do anything about ingame fps limiters, which theoretically have the lowest latency.

Throw yourself into the deep end and learn how to swim, you'll probably break something but trying to fix these problems is how you learn
I will say though, I wouldn't recommend using blackarch since it's moreso a hacker distro
If you really want to use photoshop or play shit like valorant, you'll have to learn virtual machines
otherwise accept it as a necessary sacrifice in getting rid of microshart
it's as good as you make it, so it's better that than wasting time distrohopping

You can also use DXVK itself as a frame limiter. Just export DXVK_FRAME_RATE="something" as an env var or in lutris per game options or steam commands. It uses the same method as mangohud on late. Personally though I like being able to toggle the cap ingame.

You can download new desktop environments whenever you want. Thinking you have to switch distros because you dislike how your current distro looks is a noob mistake.
That said if you don't want to go through the trouble of setting up Arch you can just use Archinstall or download Opensuse with KDE Plasma. I think Opensuse might have the best KDE, it's so sad that Zypper is slow as balls so I can't say it's completely better than Arch.

Everything runs super smooth and buttery on Linux. For Honor, Battlefield 1, TF2, hell even StarCraft 2. BOTH were locked to 144 via v-sync (Linux calls it FIFO because that's technically what v-sync is) btw, on Linux the framerate wasn't unlocked.

Wayland is great, but the input delay is a huge problem if you're taking multiplayer games even somewhat seriously it's a huge disadvantage
>>
>>638434952
Not yet. My main reason is a really weird edge case. My mouse (Logitech MX Master 3) has a high-resolution scroll wheel and libinput is kinda shit at supporting that, I get both missed scrolls and double scrolls with it and the only way to avoid it without breaking everything or having to manually patch all my shit is to use an outdated version of xf86-input-libinput that forces it to use a legacy path without high res support. There's no toggle to use that manually, only using Xorg with an outdated version of the libinput xorg driver works.

>>
>>638436140
No because when I discovered the issue someone else had already reported it. I haven't followed it actively but every time I try to upgrade the driver the issue persists.

But recalling this issue I looked it up again and apparently an option to disable high-res scrolling has been added since then in the xf86-input-libinput driver. I guess I could finally update it but I'll still be forced to use Xorg because libinput itself doesn't have a simple toggle for it.

Is there a way to make gamescope do aspect ratio correction?
I'm running a game with
>gamescope -w 320 -h 200 -W 1600 -H 1200 -n -f --
and it's still filling the entire 16:10 (1920x1200) screen instead of pillarboxing to 4:3.
Yes, I know 320x200 is a 16:10 resolution, hence aspect ratio correction.
>>
>>638441362
That sounds more like a monitor issue than gamescope, you're asking for a 4:3 resolution from a 16:10 screen. I have a couple of monitors and only one of them has letter-/pillarboxing support without fucking up the aspect ratio.
>>
>>638442352
Thanks for the idea; I hadn't tried my monitor's aspect control setting. It has "full", "4:3" and "overscan" options. Unfortunately, I just tried it, and the 4:3 option was not available, so I don't think the monitor is actually getting a 4:3 signal. Meanwhile, if I use
>gamescope -w 320 -h 200 -W 1600 -H 1200 -n -b --
for borderless window instead of fullscreen, gamescope does make a borderless 4:3 (1600x1200) window, but then the game's graphics in that window are still 16:10 (i.e. scaled down to 1600x1000 instead of filling the whole 1600x1200).
A similar thing happens if I change my display resolution to 1600x1200, then change the monitor's aspect control setting to 4:3 to get a pillarboxed 4:3 desktop, and then run the game with
>gamescope -w 320 -h 200 -W 1600 -H 1200 -n -f --
as before. The game's graphics are still effectively 1600x1000 instead of 1600x1200.
So it seems like gamescope just doesn't want to make non-square pixels, which is disappointing. Oh well.
I should mention that I'm not using the latest gamescope — I built an older version because the latest requires a version of wayland-server not offered by Linux Mint's package manager — but I'm not aware of the latest version having added any features related to aspect ratio control.

I don't want to stretch the game; I want to un-stretch it. Old games that run at 320x200 were generally designed to be displayed in 4:3.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvckyWxHAIw
ScummVM has an aspect ratio correction option for exactly this reason. DOSBox can do this aspect ratio correction as well. What I was trying to run is actually a source port of a DOS game, Rise of the Triad, and this port still renders in 320x200, but doesn't do any aspect ratio correction to 4:3 outside of 640x480 and 800x600 modes which look like crap because they're not integer scaling. So I wanted gamescope to scale the 320x200 mode to 1600x1200, which would be pixel-perfect and look fine if only it worked.

Just finished the new Amnesia demo. Works perfectly out of the box which is hardly surprising anymore. It's strange though, I replayed the first Amnesia game for the first time in a decade a couple of months ago and didn't find it all that scary, but at some point while playing the game I had to pause the game and ask deliberate on whether I had the stomach to continue playing. Something about this game that other Frictional games didn't have is just pants shittingly terrifying to me

Disabling DX12 in the game settings seems to have fixed
Which is weird because I had never messed with that option before, it was always on as far as I remember
I checked the pacman logs and there was an update to mesa, maybe that's what caused it
>>
>>638454758
https://steamcommunity.com/app/548430/discussions/1/4739473745777611857/ looks like dx12 isn't new, so hard to say what's up if you yourself didn't change it. It's not impossible a vkd3d update might have introduced bugs so it might be worth checking a previous proton version + dx12 to see if the issue is still there

I tried multiple older and newer proton versions and the problem is still there

I have never in my life gone to /g/ because I'm not a tech guy and I heard they don't care about video games there, so no wonder I haven't heard of it. I like Linux because it brings the fun back to using a computer. As someone who plays video games, gnome-pie being very similar to a weapon wheel in video games is a familiar and comforting way to interface with my computer that windows just doesn't have. Learning linux is like learning a really engrossing RPG where you figure out how stats work and shit to minmax a build (which non-abstracted into a metaphor would be "making the best rice on the most efficient system navigation methods")

If I, a non-techy person, can learn linux, and these winfags cannot, they must be completely retarded.
>NOOOO BUT TERMINAL
You have to be a fucking zoomer who never grew up with GMod or source engine games or idtech games like quake 3 to be unfamiliar with a console, hell, this is why I use yakuake as a terminal sometimes, it's familiar. but even then there are several distros that never need terminal usage at all, so I don't know what these retards are complaining about unless they haven't actually used linux in the past 10 years.

the advantage of installing japanese fonts in your system rather than the prefix, is that you only need to install them once. Unless the game is weird and needs them also in the prefix for some reason, but I haven't seen that yet.

Gamescope is a massive reason I like linux and why I think the future of PC gaming should head more in Linux's direction if people are smart. You mean `gamescope -fin -- frogatto`?
It tells gamescope to run the game (frogatto) in fullscreen (-f) with integer scaling (-i) and nearest-neighbor filtering (-n). The integer scaling option is actually unnecessary in this particular case, because upscaling the 800x600 game to my 1920x1200 monitor will naturally upscale it by exactly 2x, but I already got used to typing "-fin" because those are the options I generally want. The nearest-neighbor filtering is important though, because otherwise it looks like blurry shit (see image).
