It was his idea to release less games, but these few games would be AAA titles which would require massive development cycles and budgets in lieu of Nintendo's/old-Sony's approach of releasing several lower budget games in the middle of big releases. That was such a successful approach. Shawn Layden should be fucking smacked for trying to change a winning formula. That approach got Nintendo through the 90s, and even Ken Kutaragi respected Nintendo's approach and decided to copy some of their strategies during the PS1 era because it worked. When Nintendo's game output slowed down during the N64 era, they got sacked by the PS1.Playstation didn't become successful because of AAA games. It became successful because it had a lot of games.

CoD and GTAV are kids games, but kids these days spend more time on their phones than they do playing games. The Switch caters to people who grew up before everyone had a smart phone, and has a massive library of games for just about everyone. That's why the Switch userbase is typically in their 30's. The formfactor is also a huge selling point (yes, regardless of exclusives); there are no other current handhelds that do what the Switch does. The Deck tried, but missed everything that made the Switch so beloved.
