>RTX came out 4 years ago
>Still only a handful of games that make good use of it
>Still tons of games that don't even have functional mirrors
What went wrong?
>>
>>608154145
>What went wrong?
NVidia pushed for raytracing way before GPUs were capable of doing it properly, just so they had a gimmick to sell their new line of cards.
>>
>>608154145
?????????????????????
open/g/lfag here
is it so hard to:
>invert the camera matrix
>clip everything "behind" the mirror using clipping planes
>store result into a frame buffer
>render said frame buffer as texture onto the mirror, using transformations to orientate the view correctly
>use a bunch of other shaders to give the mirror texture some material instead of being a flat plane, like lighting effects
>>
>>608154480
and now retards refer to ray tracing as rtx, they won and I hate it.
>>
>working mirrors: check
>stencil shadows: check
>phong shading: check
>MSAA: check
Yep, it's gamer time.
>>
>>608154634
Now propose a way to do that in 2022 AAA games without gutting performance harder than ray-tracing ever could.
>>
>>608154145
Doesn't add much to the game. If there was some game with gameplay elements involving reflections (say Portal style puzzle) then maybe it would be somewhat worth it.
>>
>What went wrong?
Raytracing is a dumb gimmick and bake lights were always a better solution.
Just don't use the bake lights included with unreal engine and unity because LITERALLY, THE ENTIRE FUCKING INDUSTRY knows they suck.
>>
>>608154634
Yes, because everything has to go through the standard PBR workflow, because reasons.
>>
>>608155064
And you people laugh at John Blow when he made a puzzle game with reflection mechanics.

No.

How did LA Noir handle reflections? I thought it was a second room until I went into a room with a working mirror that you could look behind.

For scene's global illumination? Yes, bake that shit.
Having baked global illumination doesn't mean you can't have dynamic lighting.

>>608155675
>Can't move light sources because their bounces are baked and would have the illusion broken with the tiniest bit of scrutiny
>Oh, but at least you have shadow maps that are too blurry for self-shadowing to work, so you'd better hope the screen space shadows won't break!
Nice "dynamic" lighting, faggot.

Good ol late 2000s
>>
>>608156060
It clearly shows the 3080 Ti achieving 101 FPS at 4K.
>>
>>608156189
What he meant is that it actuall renders at lower resolution and then uses dlss shenanigans to upscale the image
>>
>>608154145
What's the difference between top-middle and bottom-middle?
>>
>>608156560
What I mean is that even without doing that, the performance is still high.

They use multiple.
Mainly a mix of neutral good, lawful neutral, and true neutral.
They also use it to great effect to render objects outside of screenspace, albeit in pretty shit quality compared to what the objects actually look like.

EDF5 has pre-rendered reflections in these road mirrors
the thing is, this mirror is 1 of 4 on an intersection, none of them show anything that's resembling the correct area, and they all show cars that don't exist
>>
>>608159098
All I know is, mirrors work damn well in those games and I don't see why more games can't be like that.

Don't care how more realistic it is technically.

It's doing shit I experienced in games as a child like 30 years ago for an insane computing and literal cost

Raytracing isnt a nvidia specific feature and exists for over 30 years.
Its basically their specific gpu load of ray tracing on nvidia cards, kinda like physx was.
>>
>>608154145
At this point I feel like it's a running gag. Even a game like Prey, which can render 3D worlds and draw them on player-breakable surfaces, doesn't have functional mirrors.

OP is funnier.
but to "steal" something like an image you would need some indication of authorship, both versions of the image lack that, so nobody stole anything.
basically, fair use.
not that the original had made any great effort that was worth complaining over had someone actually "stolen" it.
>>
>>608162186
You can also lower the RT quality to compensate for the extra ray count at higher resolutions.
>>
>>608154480
DLSS works great in most games and makes RTX features perfectly playable
>muh 4k monitor

>>
>>608155675
Global illumination doesn't just mean the lighting outdoors you tard. It means there's a unified lighting solution, which also lets you do things like light and color bounces, correct shadows, and ambient occlusion that doesn't look like big dark fluff balls attached to the screen
>>
>>608163335
>just render at 1080p on your $1000 GPU bro

Games that use shitty SSR and TAA should let me turn both off if they aren't oing to put any effort into them. Hunt Showdown is a major culprit of this.
>>
>>608163586
>Still looks just as good as 4K

>>
>>608163938

and inb4 comparisons to TAA
>>
>>608164051
You can't even turn that off in Doom Eternal officially.
>>
>>608154145
It won't be viable until MCM GPU's and diversity hires using lego block coding to produce objectively worse products like 2077 are behind the curve and turning advancements into a moot point since shit code and bloat eat up most of the headroom provided by them. 4000 series is probably going to be Maxwell's demon becoming reality with extreme PSU reqs and heat so it's going to take next generation solutions.
>>
>>608154145
I hope AAA games continue to use the garbage gimmick. Turning that shit off makes new games run great on older hardware.
