>>
>>574471814
The big advancement that has everyone in awe of Elon is that he made the rockets reusable. They perfected landing. This makes space flight MUCH cheaper. Before this every flight was one and done, they couldn't land them so every launch cost as much because you're doing it from scratch. Think of it like having to buy a new car after each use because there's no way to land it other than to aim for water. Now that rocket can be tested to make sure no repairs are needed and then shot right back into space. It's not quite FTL or warp but it's a hell of a step in the right direction.

Two conclusions out of that fact:
Either people became too smart and nobody even invested anything besides joke lunch money into his memes, all the drama was fake bots building up hype
or
Retards actually lost their life savings there and just choked on it and there is no hope at all anymore.

If that bullshit was real and didn't lead to his death - nothing will.

By design, a rocket already has a thruster to slow down its descent when it's upright. If you want to land it sideways you need either more thrusters pointing to the side (dead weight during the ascent) or lifting surfaces to do it plane-style (dead weight during the ascent).

Do you though?
You can use the big thruster on the bottom to slow it down, and then use the existing side thrusters to turn it when it's almost at the ground.
The impact would be a bit more impactful than the one seen in that webm, sure, but far easier to pull off. It doesn't seem totally impossible to me.

Unless it's extremely bottom-heavy the rotation is gonna happen roughly at the center and leave the rocket far too high to touch down safely, even if you somehow stopped it in midair beforehand.
The one thing I'm willing to question is why they don't have any kind of extendable landing gear at the bottom, but then again if they manage to land reliably without it's just dead weight.

The fact is that nobody actually did anything. All of space was scrapped as soon as the cold war was over and nascar got more views than nasa. Im not sure why you are down playing this, its the only company who successfully utilizes these technologies to go to space and make sure we can keep going there. Meanwhile others rely on jewish/government funding and keep themselves grounded cause they are told to and its basically just a money laundering scheme for their benefactors.

if this thing ever explodes on launch or even after (like many musk's ships did) it will destroy everything in tens kilometers radius. The launch pod, animals from the reserves that are around the place, people that are still living nearby and being constantly pressured to leave
And even if it doesnt, the noise level in 220 db will guaranteed to kill everything nearby anyway

I love how zoomers cum in their pants over the idea of a reusable space shit when that's literally what the space shuttle was, it was designed to be reusable to cut costs.

The thing is, it had the opposite effect, it ended up costing NASA a fortune to maintain them and as we all know, one of them exploded in heroic fashion on live TV.

Can't wait for one of Elon's rockets to explode into a million pieces so he will get the blame for another national tragedy. His face looks like a slice of ham glued onto the head of a prototype terminator that failed QA

He doesn't actually say anything objectively false, Starlink anywhere but some remote location is a complete waste.
The problems that it fixes shouldn't exist in the first place, we have considerably better ways of supplying internet connectivity to just about anybody on the planet. The problem is entirely in lobbying and politics, Starlink for many people exists only as their one real choice in a world where money and corruption stands in the way of progress.

Russians managed to be the first to space despite being a backwater shithole not 50 years before their flight AND they were financially burdened by a shit communist economic system.

I don't get what's impressive about this. You can achieve anything if you pour enough money into it( but nobody is insane enough to dump billions into something without a return).

Not a pinko. I just think the fact that slavs got to space with the equivalent of ducktape and cardboard pretty underrated.

Instead of competing with starlink they have been lobbying to block funding going to starlink instead. It's a shame about all the space junk though.

Start Guidefor Astronomy you say?

First, you need to know the types of telescopes

>refractor telescopes
your classic telescope with lenses.
Usually differentiated in:
achromatic
and
apochromatic
achromatic ones are cheaper, but can have chromatic aberration. Apochromatic ones are better and eliminate pretty much all color inconsistencies, but cost 4 digit dollerinos

>reflector telescopes
very simplistic, also called newtonian reflectors because newton build one hundreds of years ago. Basically a big tube with a mirror, reflecting on a secondary mirror, which then reflects in your eyepiece.
Wide opening, inexpensive, usually recommended to people starting out, especially if you want to see deep space objects like galaxies or nebula.
You need to colliminate them from time to time, basically adjusting the primary and secondary mirror for an optimal image. It's relatively easy though.

>catadioptric (or compound) telescopes
Similair to newtonian reflectors it also uses mirrors, but in a more compact form factor.
>>
>>574502379
Then, you should know the type of mounts there are

>alt-az
>dobson
>equatorial
fairly self explainatory from pic related

>fairly self explainatory from pic related
fuck

Which one should you consider as a beginner?
A dobson mount with a newtonian reflector, usually just
>dobsonian reflector
cheap but workable mount which you either place on the ground or a table/chain depending on the size of the telescope. The inexpensive mount means most of the production cost goes into the optics, and reflector telescopes are easy to produce to begin with.
>>
>>574502379
What's the one you used for the webms you posted? Achromatic refractor?

Things you should know about size, aperature and focal length:

>aperature
how wide the opening of your telescope is. This affects how much light it can gather, the bigger you can afford (and manage in size) the better
>focal length
the distance light travels from the aperature to the eyepiece.
The relationship between aperature and focal length determines your magnification (in combination with an eye piece) and field of view.

>Eye pieces
also have a number on them showing their focal length, also in mm. My telescope came with two different ones, a 25mm eye piece and a 10 mm.
To calculate the magnification, you simply divide the focal length of the telescope by the eye piece. For my telescope, thats 650/10= 65x magnification, or 650/25= 26x magnification.
For beginners, an 5-8 inch dobsonian reflector is a good balance between price and size, ranging anywhere from 250-500 USD.

with a 130p Heritage, which is a 5 inch dobsonian reflector.
Even though they are cheap, reflector telescopes are incredible for beginners. All I did was use a telescope smartphone mount, the pictures/videos were taken with an iPhone.
There is a lot of post processing involved, but you can definitely see detail like cloud bands on jupiter or the rings of saturn even with an inexpensive telescope.

You probably could see some brighter nebulas, galaxys and star clusters too, but that depends on light pollution. Since I am in a city, I am limited to planetary observation. But planets are visible even in the most light polluted places, if that interests you definitely consider it, I've been having fun.

Government contracts exists to privatize public wealth, achieving a goal is secondary. Cut the budget in half and that's the real cost, everything else goes to Musk and never comes back.

>>574520619

You have ten minutes to explain what concrete benefits SpaceX provides to society as a whole that outmatches the cost paid by the taxpayer. No scientistic zealotry, no vagueness.
He gets billions of dollars in our money, where exactly does society get those billions of dollars back from his projects? What are the concrete benefits that the average tax-paying American gets from Musk?

Billions from launches flowing into america instead of russia or china

Well you're a textbook conservative. Fear of the future keeps you rooted in the past or how things were. I hope you understand I don't mean that as a bad thing, parts of society need to remain rooted and a little fear of the unknown and not understood is a good thing. Still I can't help but notice the absurdity of posting "I wish there was no internet" on the internet. If you don't like it so much, why are you here?

You know why, yes?

Because we are the best fucking things in the universe. And even though there's clearly a quota of kids that have to be on the cover of Vogue, it's the least of the reason why it's okay to let these turds on the cover: we're the best thing in the universe, we're humanity's best example, and it's okay to glorify us in spite of ourselves. You can acknowledge that we're fucked up and we have flaws, but if you're still running around like a sexist dickweed on the internet, you're pretty much SOL.

I'm guilty of both. I write in an artistic medium (so obviously it's okay that I'm being racist in a way that could get me sued, but I'm okay with that because I make art. It's more likely that I'll be attacked for the racism I write about)

while this makes a pretty great point (we should be going after billionaires harder instead of basically just a single somewhat attractive latino mommy who i'd allow to step on me), it also misses the massive cultural shift that started way earlier than that.
minority / women's rights / lgbt movements weren't invented in the 2010s, but the spread of information with the internet was exponential and picking up steam. social networks helped a lot in their growth (and also helped mouthbreathers get in touch with other mouthbreathers)

SpaceX saved American taxpayers $2 billion by flying NASA's Europa Clipper on a Falcon Heavy instead of SLS
https://www.theverge.com/2021/7/23/22590682/nasa-europa-clipper-spacex-falcon-heavy

NASA also saves about $40 million every time an astronaut flies on Dragon instead of Soyuz.
>>
>>574521417
It boils down to the fact that I'd rather have the government give SpaceX money because it's better than fucking Boeing and Lockheed sitting on their asses doing fuck all and using cost-plus contracts to rape the tax payer for all their worth, before turning around and using their rape money to lobby congress into giving them even more rape money.
Reminder that we had to rely on the fucking Soyuz for over a decade before SpaceX filled the gap since old space was too lazy/incompetent.

>>
>>574523619
Or you know, you can acknowledge an achievement regardless of the person.
When I see self landing rocket magic i don't think of Musk sitting in a tiny room coding the entire landing sequence. I think about how much work it must have been for a lot of people to manage all that.
Attributing the whole thing to Musk whether he did something good or bad is absolutely retarded to begin with.

Now it's Musk doing the raping, a great improvement.
SpaceX was not necessary to initiate a new era of space development, it was simply the most profitable for the people involved. A real innovative endeavor would have revitalized the public development of space technology, not surrendered all agency and funds to private interests.

>>
>>574479665
that only means he used daddy's diamond money to hire competent people to build his company for him, many such cases, guy is actually a fool
>>
>>574523629
SpaceX saved NASA money because NASA was not able or willing to develop the means to cut costs itself. That only requires the reinvigoration of public R&D, the shift to private development was done only because it was the easiest way of grifting off of tax dollars.

>>574523950
If the tax-payer is paying the bills the government has a duty, sanctified in the Constitution and all related legal theory, to make good on that investment. If SpaceX does not give an equivalent return, it should not be receiving funding.
>>
>>574491974

>>
>>574524154
>SpaceX was not necessary to initiate a new era of space development
Bullshit
The public sector was fucked by contractors and politics, an outside entity was the only way to get out of that groove.
For example the original shuttle was also supposed to be extremely cheap and reusable, but then contractors and other government bodies (namely the airforce) got into the picture and the cost skyrocketed.

>>
>>574524562
This is a primitive superstition.
Private rockets are cheaper than public rockets because they have the full support of the private interests involved, while a public development program will always face undercutting and political sabotage from the private interests, like Boeing and SpaceX, that stand to gain immensely from the money that they could reap by having a monopoly on technological development in a given field.

>>574524704
An issue of conditional inefficiency is not a reason to abandon any attempt at public development.

Private rockets are better since they work for profit. Public rockets don't have that constraint
Competition reduces costs too. Public rockets are by default a monopoly

>What's really remarkable to me is the breadth of his knowledge. I mean I've met a lot of super super smart people but they're usually super super smart on one thing and he's able to have conversations with our top engineers about the software, and the most arcane aspects of that and then he'll turn to our manufacturing engineers and have discussions about some really esoteric welding process for some crazy alloy and he'll just go back and forth and his ability to do that across the different technologies that go into rockets cars and everything else he does.

>>574525263
Somebody else could have done it, and I'm sure there was competition in the beginning. But once Musk's connections, money, and slimy salesmanship got him the position it was over. Nobody has done it since because there is now no need for it, the people who would already got what they want. The barrel of the public fund has been opened, and the money pours out like wine to everybody with a cup. Making another hole would just be unnecessary work.
>>
>>574525174
>An issue of conditional inefficiency is not a reason to abandon any attempt at public development.
The public/traditional method hasn't been abandoned, it's just shit.
If the government worked differently and wasn't a corrupt piece of shit perhaps you'd be right, but the fact of the matter is that a private industry that actually cares about the timeline they work on is infinitely better than the alternative method we've had since the end of the space race.
