Why did the Survival Horror genre die?
this intro gave me a stroke
ask con-zoomers, devs appeal to them now
Survival means nothing when you can reload every time you dieJump scares don't work the second time aroundThe player has to be given arbitrary restrictions to make the game challengingVideo games are fundamentally not scary

Fads come and go all the time.
The success of RE4 killed its mainstream appeal for third-person, over-the-shoulder horror-shooters.Still love it for what it is, though.
I want a Dark Souls inspired Survival Horror
SH died in the early 2000s because slow paced atmospheric puzzle games aren't as profitable as action shootan gaems. Then there was a kinda-sorta resurrection of the genre after Penumbra and moreso Amnesia became hits, but that wasn't quite the same thing. In those cases it became more popular to WATCH streamers play these games rather than playing them yourself. So from there, SH games just became lets-play streamer bait
>>570037357But this game is on par with RE1 and SH2
Same reason the stealth genre died. They're niche genres targeting specific people. They do not have the potential to sell huge numbers of copies unless they somehow luck out and get normies to play. Resident Evil and Metal Gear being the obvious examples. So game publishers decided that instead of making these games they would make shooters and throw a horror skin on it, or make an open world third person action adventure game and throw some half-assed stealth elements in and hope everyone, normies and stealth fans will buy it.This is why almost every AAA game these days is a cinematic third person adventure with either walking simulator or open world busywork elements. This formula sells and anything deviating from it must settle for niche AA budgets and profits which big companies don't want to do.
>>570037357Because RE4 decided to court children and retards because Capcom made the mush brained decision to make the RE series exclusive to a Nintendo console that looked like a child's lunchbox, and then acted surprised when they sold like shit, and had to appeal to the lowest common denominator in order to recoup lost money, and then the rest of the industry followed suit because they saw that there was gold in them thar normie hills.
>>570037357Real answer is that the "AA" part of the industry is mostly dead, and AA was where all the good shit was. Indie is usually unequipped to handle genres that are reliant on good presentation values, and AAA aims for the widest audiences possible.
>>570039950Silent Hill was just a flat out commercial failure as a series. 3 and 4 didn't even sell 1m copies. 1 and 2 were more successful, but I don't think either of those broke the 2m mark.
>>570042561I meant SH as in survival horror, not silent hill.
>>570037357which game?also I saw a lot of sppoky shit irl and now get too scared to play horror, but thinking of playing a few horror games this winterhow do I avoid getting scared and not proceeding then uninstalling suddenly
>>570041545No, back in the day AAA games were just as good and inventive as AA games, but even more ambitious.
>>570037357Game?
>>570043508>>570043576Tormented Souls
>>570043508>>570043576Tormented Souls. If you like old school RE and SH, you'll probably enjoy it.
>>570037357Been playing this shit all day. Man it's spoopy.
how can I reanimate the corpse with rigor mortisI have the plastic heart but It's not working!
>>570043562True, but that's mostly because things are far more imbalanced these days on top of what that anon said. 20 years ago there was no equivalent of the mega-blockbuster games that have half a billion dollars in funding under their belt. Even the big name titles of the day pale in comparison to how things are now. But even that aside, the general idea holds true. Nowadays you basically ONLY have these fuckhuge mega-games that need to sell tens of millions of units to be considered successful. Either that or it's low-budget indie games. There's no more in-between
>>570037632The game was mad by one of those Mexican countries so the writing is just a bit off. Something about that cheesiness though adds to the true survival horror feel of the RE1 days.
>>570044179>pull the flickering light>hatch in the floor will open>light the two candles on the mirror you find down there>go through it>find a doll with an open chest>put the heart inside it>go back through mirror into the room with the body>its chest will be closed up now>shock it to get its hand to open
>>570043631>>570043905I played re1 and shit myselfI could only play re2 remake recently and I think re4 long ago, cause they arent so scary and more action orientedpure horror scares the shit out of me tho, I played so many games and uninstalled in 30minthough I wanna get into em, I dont wanna play something like outlast which is just hide and seek
>>570044424lost it at first step... which flickering light?
>>570037357It didn't, it just changed. There are still series that emulator the classic Siren/RE/SH vibes, they just aren't as popular due to difficulty.
>>570037357I'd love to play games that are spooky or haunting, but don't rely on jumpscares or gore.
>>570037697still ass hurt on SH2 filtering your pseudo int
>>570043905>old school RE or SHThat sounds like a bit of a regression to me, why bother? You know they made more games after those two right?
>>570044618In the same room with the body that has a death grip on the crank handle, there's a flickering light on the wall. If you walk near it, you'll get a button prompt. There's a note about it near the entrance of the room.
>>570044853I'm not getting your logic. You're not allowed to enjoy an older style of gameplay because newer games exist?
>>570044854>There's a note about it near the entrance of the room.fuck, I'm retarded, I remember the not but I thought it was nothing
>>570037697>The player has to be given arbitrary restrictions to make the game challengingHow is "there's only this many items with this many usages" arbitrary. Should a shotgun shell allow for two shots?
>>570044484I kinda wish I still felt that way. When I think about action/survival horror games I mostly care about optimizing routes, ammo and how to game the AI. It's like when people with arachnophobia claim they feel extremely uneasy seeing spiders in a game. I'm completely indifferent to them and all I see is just another obstacle with a different behavior and coat of paint.
>>570046375nah you should get more immersedthe best way to dodge your problem is to not replay any games atleast for 2-5 years
>>570045098A lot of notes are extremely important, even having pictures drawn on them that hint at a puzzle a few rooms down.
>>570037357Because games as bad as that one are considered good by the fanbase so appealed to precisely 0 worthwhile audience.
>>570039950You are talking completely out of your ass. Probably the most popular survival horror game ever released in the mid 2000s. Not to mention ensuing games like L4D, Dead Rising, etc.
Seriously looks so fucking good for a Mexican game made by just two guys
>>570037357If you're positing that the genre is "dead" because it's not cloning the 1996-2002 games endlessly, it's simply a matter of shifting market. Games try to chase that late 90s horror are still around, they're just indie passion projects and not AAA releases.
>>570046741>L4D>Dead Rising>survival horrortime to stop
>>570046741>L4D>Dead Rising>Survival horror
>>570046786>What is an "asset store"?
>>570046786>LooksWell yeah, all the assets they bought were made by talented people except their shitty Daz model for the protagonist.
>>570046845Why don't you google what their official listed genre is. I'll wait.
>>570046917>>570046952How do you know this?
>>570046957great argument
>>570046883Are none of you fucking idiots aware of how SH mixed genres with action in the 2000s?>>570047078Not even an argument, it's literally the official definition. You only have reaction pics to because you're a retard, now that's my actual argument.
The music in this game is so fucking good.
They must have spent a fortune buying very specific assets
>>570047223I don't need to make an argument against the moron calling L4D and dead rising survival horror
>>570047234Why are you in the same room as me lol
>>570037357NO JUMPSCARE
i think most survival horror games are too easy, it just feels like you're being taken on a guided tour through spooky areas. i think they should moreso try to make the stakes gameplay focused.the classic resident evils try to do this with ink ribbons, but they give you far too many for limited saves to create any actual tension.my first time making it to the bottom of blighttown was more tense than any horror game i've ever played
>>570047313 I guess we should all respect the words of a nobody like you over the official genre classification.
>>570037357As the industry became more focused on casual players (the majority of which only plays a game for a few hours before dropping it), the standard gameplay conventions of survival horror were too big of an obstacle to make the jump. Tank controls? 3rd person/isometric perspective? The player having purposefully bad combat capabilities? Level design that wasn't straightforward, sometimes intentionally leaving the player unsure of where to go for the sake of mood setting? All the shit that people associate with classical survival horror games are casual-poison. That's why you had so many games switch to action horror like Dead Space, RE4/5, Silent Hill (poorly), etc. Its either horror-flavor action shooter with slightly stranger controls or haunted house no weapons jumpscare central. Sometimes both in the same game.
>>570047521>official genre classification
>>570047667"Nice argument" - some retard c. 2021
>>570037357Nakid girlvagania
>>570047409I think the reason Blighttown worked so well was the fact that at that point in the game there was no fast travel so there was no safety. You aren't going back to Firelink. You're stuck down there until you spend an age backtracking (which is just as difficult going back as it was going forward) or pressing on until you finish the mission.
>>570047409Yeah, classic RE games can be a tad too easy when you what you're doing. I would recommend trying mods like Mortal Night, The Origin of Species or The Lord of the Necropolis for a challenge.

>>570048689pirate it
>>570048689It's my personal favorite survival horror game since Silent Hill 3, though I am personally biased toward that style of game.
>>570045104I think people winge on "Why can't I shoot everything that moves" motif of horror games
>>570037357because one pillar of the already unpopular sub-genre adapted to mainstream marketability, and the other just fucking died. (RE/SH)and it's better this way, leave it to the indies with actual passion instead of corporate japs.
>>570048689Unmitigated trash. Somehow has clunkier combat than SH1 if you can even imagine that.

>Why did the Survival Horror genre die?It didn't die. It's stronger then ever.
>>570050942>Somehow has clunkier combat than SH1here's your (you). Happy now?
>>570051231>Popularity contestI don't even know what you're trying to prove here, horror games have the most dogshit standards in the industry, even worse than MMOs. If the general audience says a horror game is good, it's definitely not.
>>570051387>Noooo you have to praise garbage because it has my big titty Daz model fap bait character in it!!!!!!!

>>570050942Game was pretty good until the final act, The bunker/vault area along with the final encounter were a bore, but everything else was cool.
>>570037357kek
>>570052243They're right about the hard mode. The game is unfortunately lacking in any bells and whistles. There are no unlockables, no difficulties, no bonus modes. Just the one game.
>>570051070It's spooky until you realize that all you have to do in order to get it to despawn is to go back through the same door you entered through, and then go back through it again.
>>570052329I don't you understand, he wants an easier mode for "normal people" since it's too hard and caters only to hardcore players.
Why is there so many fucking enemies wtfAlmost every room has 2 of those mutilated fuckers and they can kill you with just 3 hits
>>570037632Why are the subs completely different?
>>570052329>There are no unlockables, no difficulties, no bonus modes. Just the one game.Like God intended.

>>570052619it's got me on edge more than a regular player because my video driver crashes so much and at such random times, causing me to lose all progress. Still, there seem to be enough save tapes thus far.

>>570054536protip: knock them down (~6 shots with the nail gun or 1 with the shotgun) then stand over them and hit them with the crowbar until they're dead. Really saves a lot of ammo.
>>570037357Because people didn't play RE7 in VR so they never realized just how fucking amazing RE7 in VR is. Survival horror has been soulless ever since.
>>570054276stolen assets
>>570054667They always hit you no matter what
>>570054893>stolenisn't that shit all public domain at this point?
>>570037357Here is the truthful answer. They were getting stale and lacking in innovation. By the time action horror became a thing with RE4's success traditional survival horror games were left in the dust.

>>570055129>>570055554why's /v/ always full of tech illiterates
>>570054986You really need to git gud. You are way more nimble than any of the enemies. Stick and move until you knock them over. This is only necessary with the nail gun. The shotgun only needs 1 shot to floor the enemy. Another protip, don't manually reload. Do it from the inventory screen. It's instant that way and you can just fire away if need be.
>>570037357>have to open the menu to change from gun to lighter and vice versa>cant see where I am on the map
>>570044312>one of those Mexican countries
>>570055783I really wish this game hadn't mindlessly carried that design flaw over from the classics.
>>570054893if you mean the paintings, they are public domain.

>>570037357no quicksave no buy
>>570055395she looks like a shitty bimbo follower mod for skyrim, specially the naked model
>>570037357no bush no buy
>>570050942>SH1>clunkyI just played through for the first time so no nostalgia goggles. What is 'clunky' about the combat? The character responds exactly to your inputs, and attacks have believable windup. Enemy attacks are actually maybe a little too telegraphed and have audio cues that let you know when to run/counter attack when you get a hang of the enemy types.
>>570056026Reloading from the inventory? Yeah I don't like that either. I wish a single player game would copy Outbreak's reloading system, where if you didn't have spare magazines for your specific gun you'd have to manually reload it one round at a time in real time.
>>570055395the fucking massive hentai maid ribbon tie... just remove that and knock the brightness on the dress a few notches and it would look good.
>>570037357There are still survival horror games, just not in the style of old RE.Alien Isolation, for example.
>>570056518Outbreak needs a REmake treatment
>>570056429Respectable.
>>570055993They just patched that. The map is hotkeyed to R3 now, and it shows where you are on it.
>>570056518I just played Daymare, and it did something very similar to that with a real time inventory. You can combine ammo with your gun/magazine, and you can even do a fast reload where you drop your extra magazine. Makes it so that inventory reloading is necessary to refill your mags, but not a hack that allows you to reload instantly. It's a shame that the game was so action focused, and had almost no spook factor/underwhelming production value.
>>570037357We need a survival horror game that genuinely exhausts the player
>>570057386We had it, it was called Alien Isolation.
>>570057565Even better in VR.
>>570057565Here's an idea: Sensory overload induced horror with extremely frantic combat. You have a lot of ammo resources, but you're bound to blow through it considering the hectic nature of the fightsThink of it like a survival horror version of Hotline Miami.
>>570057056>DaymareIs it any good?
>>570056792early ps3 games had better models
>>570057852Sounds like Killing Floor Incursion.

>>570057980I tried the demo yesterday, after reading that it was originally the Unreal RE2 fan remake that got axed when Capcom said "We do it!", but I don't know, it just kind of bored me.
>>570057980I actually liked it. The story has a nice curveball, and playing on daymare mode you have barely enough ammo to scrape by conflicts using melee and running from some enemies, so the difficulty balance was nice. Puzzles struck a good balance and seemed very much like old RE ones. Enemies, particularly the stronger ones were a bit monotonous though, and it has the voice acting issues that come with having a non english native dev team.Flawed soul/10good soundtrackok puzzles with a couple memorable onesnot really scarybalanced, albeit simple combatstory that makes a second play through interesting

>>570056435>>570051387>>570051176Please stop trying to fit in, there's no upboats on this site. SH1 is a good game but saying it isn't clunky to control is just disingenuous.
>>570058885>that guy who turns the brightness all the way up in horror games

>>570058885I don't even mind her design, her model is just jank as hell. I've seen better hair and textures in porn games. It's honestly the only real complaint that I've got about the game.
>>570058983>Please stop trying to fit inShut the fuck up nigger, I've been on this shithole since 2005. Clunky implies inconsistency with input response, which Silent Hill does not have. If you want a game where attacks don't have windup you can play something more action oriented.
>>570059220Because I did play it and I was born before it came out. What do you get out of acting like this?
>>570059321>Clunky implies inconsistency with input responseClunky isn't even officially defined and it's been used to describe something that is needlessly slow or requiring obtuse inputs to do simple things. >>570059542>I bet you like tank controls too.Unironically the most easy and consistent input method for a horror game with dynamic/static camera. git gud>needlessly slow or requiring obtuse inputs>r2 to ready responds immediately, almost no windup>hold x for hard attack tap x for light windup differs per weapon corresponding with damage, firing is instantaneous with guns>you can move around at normal walk speed with the majority of the weapons readied, no input lag or windup>run by holding square, can jump back by running backwards>select to open menu and change weapons, 1 second for the inventory to come upExplain what is needlessly slow or requiring obtuse inputs about this system.
