Why did the Survival Horror genre die?
>>
this intro gave me a stroke
>>
ask con-zoomers, devs appeal to them now
>>
Survival means nothing when you can reload every time you die
Jump scares don't work the second time around
The player has to be given arbitrary restrictions to make the game challenging
Video games are fundamentally not scary

>>
Fads come and go all the time.
>>
The success of RE4 killed its mainstream appeal for third-person, over-the-shoulder horror-shooters.

Still love it for what it is, though.
>>
I want a Dark Souls inspired Survival Horror
>>
SH died in the early 2000s because slow paced atmospheric puzzle games aren't as profitable as action shootan gaems. Then there was a kinda-sorta resurrection of the genre after Penumbra and moreso Amnesia became hits, but that wasn't quite the same thing. In those cases it became more popular to WATCH streamers play these games rather than playing them yourself. So from there, SH games just became lets-play streamer bait
>>
>>570037357
But this game is on par with RE1 and SH2
>>
Same reason the stealth genre died. They're niche genres targeting specific people. They do not have the potential to sell huge numbers of copies unless they somehow luck out and get normies to play. Resident Evil and Metal Gear being the obvious examples. So game publishers decided that instead of making these games they would make shooters and throw a horror skin on it, or make an open world third person action adventure game and throw some half-assed stealth elements in and hope everyone, normies and stealth fans will buy it.
This is why almost every AAA game these days is a cinematic third person adventure with either walking simulator or open world busywork elements. This formula sells and anything deviating from it must settle for niche AA budgets and profits which big companies don't want to do.
>>
>>570037357
Because RE4 decided to court children and retards because Capcom made the mush brained decision to make the RE series exclusive to a Nintendo console that looked like a child's lunchbox, and then acted surprised when they sold like shit, and had to appeal to the lowest common denominator in order to recoup lost money, and then the rest of the industry followed suit because they saw that there was gold in them thar normie hills.
>>
>>570037357
Real answer is that the "AA" part of the industry is mostly dead, and AA was where all the good shit was. Indie is usually unequipped to handle genres that are reliant on good presentation values, and AAA aims for the widest audiences possible.
>>
>>570039950
Silent Hill was just a flat out commercial failure as a series. 3 and 4 didn't even sell 1m copies. 1 and 2 were more successful, but I don't think either of those broke the 2m mark.
>>
>>570042561
I meant SH as in survival horror, not silent hill.
>>
>>570037357
which game?

also I saw a lot of sppoky shit irl and now get too scared to play horror, but thinking of playing a few horror games this winter
how do I avoid getting scared and not proceeding then uninstalling suddenly
>>

No, back in the day AAA games were just as good and inventive as AA games, but even more ambitious.

True, but that's mostly because things are far more imbalanced these days on top of what that anon said. 20 years ago there was no equivalent of the mega-blockbuster games that have half a billion dollars in funding under their belt. Even the big name titles of the day pale in comparison to how things are now. But even that aside, the general idea holds true. Nowadays you basically ONLY have these fuckhuge mega-games that need to sell tens of millions of units to be considered successful. Either that or it's low-budget indie games. There's no more in-between

In the same room with the body that has a death grip on the crank handle, there's a flickering light on the wall. If you walk near it, you'll get a button prompt. There's a note about it near the entrance of the room.

How is "there's only this many items with this many usages" arbitrary. Should a shotgun shell allow for two shots?
>>
>>570044484
I kinda wish I still felt that way. When I think about action/survival horror games I mostly care about optimizing routes, ammo and how to game the AI.
It's like when people with arachnophobia claim they feel extremely uneasy seeing spiders in a game. I'm completely indifferent to them and all I see is just another obstacle with a different behavior and coat of paint.
>>
>>570046375

If you're positing that the genre is "dead" because it's not cloning the 1996-2002 games endlessly, it's simply a matter of shifting market. Games try to chase that late 90s horror are still around, they're just indie passion projects and not AAA releases.

NO JUMPSCARE
>>
i think most survival horror games are too easy, it just feels like you're being taken on a guided tour through spooky areas. i think they should moreso try to make the stakes gameplay focused.
the classic resident evils try to do this with ink ribbons, but they give you far too many for limited saves to create any actual tension.
my first time making it to the bottom of blighttown was more tense than any horror game i've ever played
>>
>>570047313
I guess we should all respect the words of a nobody like you over the official genre classification.
>>
>>570037357
As the industry became more focused on casual players (the majority of which only plays a game for a few hours before dropping it), the standard gameplay conventions of survival horror were too big of an obstacle to make the jump. Tank controls? 3rd person/isometric perspective? The player having purposefully bad combat capabilities? Level design that wasn't straightforward, sometimes intentionally leaving the player unsure of where to go for the sake of mood setting? All the shit that people associate with classical survival horror games are casual-poison. That's why you had so many games switch to action horror like Dead Space, RE4/5, Silent Hill (poorly), etc. Its either horror-flavor action shooter with slightly stranger controls or haunted house no weapons jumpscare central. Sometimes both in the same game.

I think the reason Blighttown worked so well was the fact that at that point in the game there was no fast travel so there was no safety. You aren't going back to Firelink. You're stuck down there until you spend an age backtracking (which is just as difficult going back as it was going forward) or pressing on until you finish the mission.
>>
>>570047409
Yeah, classic RE games can be a tad too easy when you what you're doing. I would recommend trying mods like Mortal Night, The Origin of Species or The Lord of the Necropolis for a challenge.

You really need to git gud. You are way more nimble than any of the enemies. Stick and move until you knock them over. This is only necessary with the nail gun. The shotgun only needs 1 shot to floor the enemy.

Another protip, don't manually reload. Do it from the inventory screen. It's instant that way and you can just fire away if need be.

I just played through for the first time so no nostalgia goggles. What is 'clunky' about the combat? The character responds exactly to your inputs, and attacks have believable windup. Enemy attacks are actually maybe a little too telegraphed and have audio cues that let you know when to run/counter attack when you get a hang of the enemy types.
>>
>>570056026
Reloading from the inventory? Yeah I don't like that either. I wish a single player game would copy Outbreak's reloading system, where if you didn't have spare magazines for your specific gun you'd have to manually reload it one round at a time in real time.

I just played Daymare, and it did something very similar to that with a real time inventory. You can combine ammo with your gun/magazine, and you can even do a fast reload where you drop your extra magazine. Makes it so that inventory reloading is necessary to refill your mags, but not a hack that allows you to reload instantly. It's a shame that the game was so action focused, and had almost no spook factor/underwhelming production value.

I actually liked it. The story has a nice curveball, and playing on daymare mode you have barely enough ammo to scrape by conflicts using melee and running from some enemies, so the difficulty balance was nice.
Puzzles struck a good balance and seemed very much like old RE ones. Enemies, particularly the stronger ones were a bit monotonous though, and it has the voice acting issues that come with having a non english native dev team.
Flawed soul/10
good soundtrack
ok puzzles with a couple memorable ones
not really scary
balanced, albeit simple combat
story that makes a second play through interesting

Clunky isn't even officially defined and it's been used to describe something that is needlessly slow or requiring obtuse inputs to do simple things. You think I mean weapon windup when I say clunky? You gigaretard. I bet you like tank controls too.

Sorry but ugly people are wrong.

Is this worth $20 on my SeX? REmake is my favorite game. I expect at least a solid 6/10 experience.

>I bet you like tank controls too.
Unironically the most easy and consistent input method for a horror game with dynamic/static camera. git gud
>needlessly slow or requiring obtuse inputs
>r2 to ready responds immediately, almost no windup
>hold x for hard attack tap x for light windup differs per weapon corresponding with damage, firing is instantaneous with guns
>you can move around at normal walk speed with the majority of the weapons readied, no input lag or windup
>run by holding square, can jump back by running backwards
>select to open menu and change weapons, 1 second for the inventory to come up
Explain what is needlessly slow or requiring obtuse inputs about this system.

Without a doubt. If you like survival horror games from that era, you'll more than likely enjoy this.

You know, the first time I rented Resident Evil 1, I didn't have a memory card. That was a fucking great weekend
