Warhammers/maces were mostly a novelty meme usable from horseback but that's about it. Your shitty short stick can't penetrate armor all that well, is too short to accelerate the bits real good on the foot, and will always be outranged by every weapon. Polearms with axe/hammer heads had much more success because the leverage was actually serious, and it still could stab with decent control (not your ghetto pointy bits on one handed maces are not anywhere near good enough for anything other than hoping the opponent gouges his eyes on it himself). Sword was really the dueling choice unless you really fall for the meme of bringing something that wasn't true two hander like Montante or Zweihander against polearm but without shield and without armor.

Spears are overrated by HEMA because they outrange everything there on rules that are basically first to score any hit being the winner, and even then heather shield duels are most often 5/10 or 6/10 in favor of sword. Spear biggest problem has always been that you need to stab quick and efficiently before anyone can close on you, and armor or even just bad lucky with what you hit would effectively let anyone close in much more efficiently. There is a reason why they kept evolving into various polearm designs that often make the tip heavier = worse for stabbing in favor being able to use chops.

because i've actually used ancient weaponry. one of the main things that makes people think spears are any good in spite of having sparred with them is because they arent sharp.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FfmBMa-1EQ&ab_channel=BloodandIronHEMA
sharp things get stuck in shit, so anyone with a shield can leverage some control over the spear once theres an enagement. Anyone with full armor to the point that they dont use a shield is practically invulnerable to spears.
Spears are very useful weapons, but they arent the kings of 1v1

hammers that big are practically unusable and have an incredibly poor reach. these designs tend to be based on mauls, which were made out of wood. Steel hammerheads for war were a lot smaller, and you didnt really need that much more power than what you got out of those. Even then they are horribly off-balance and make it very difficult to defend with them.

if youre involving ranged weapons you should really be adding bows. early firearms were inferior to bows, but it was a lot more cost effective since they required very little training. 200 expensive but effective bows vs 1000 less effective but cheap guns tends to leave the guns as the victor. earlier guns were also not capable of piercing plate armor.

>HURRRRRRRRR SPEAR GOOD
Uh. No. Spears are only good if you are fighting in a clump with others who have shields and spears. Most battles in medieval times were usually urban skirmishes and the occasional big battle was mostly settles with arrows. People didnt meet in a fucking huge flat field with no elevation for bows to settle scores. Only in extreme rare occasions did that happen.

Most battle were fought in and for towns. Most often after a siege or a raid.

When an weapons-enthusiast start raving about muh spears, it is a huge sign that they are fucking retarded. Swords were more practical.

Instead we should all carry a brace of flintlocks

With veritable aim and forthright bearing you must level your pistol and draw your rapier upon thine assailant
And give forth the cry AVAST YE CUR

The American condition: if there's a chance no matter how slim or unlikely it is to happen to me personally or anyone I know, I'll defend to the death the right to it.

The dream: Even though I am dirt poor, and remain dirt poor, and my family and children will likely be dirt poor, the possibility one of them might be rich one day means I will defend to the death the right of the rich not to pay money to the government.
Guns: As above but replace "rich" with "might be attacked by criminals" and "poor" with "far more likely to shoot ourselves, or our kids, or our wives"

Note that I am not saying this is good or bad, it is simply programmed into the American to think this way. To spin it positively they firmly believe in being optimistic about the promise of liberty. I don't need to spin it negatively.

Heavily limit it's production and moreso it's distribution. You can argue that 'hurr durr if it exists it will be stolen', and you'd be technically right, it can't be stopped 100%, but the point is it gun crimes would be far far less frequent.

>>
>>545564458
anything with a shorter hilt can be moved around with the wrist with much greater ease, with a shield and a spear all you can really do is thrust. With both hands on a spear you are still largely limited to thrusting. An axe or a sword in particular is meant to give you a lot of options for engaging or disengaging.
>>
>>545564079
>>545554126
Are you fucking retarded?

>>
>>545564458
Spear's problem is that it has deadzone when you come too close where you either get a sword or try to use it as an unwieldy staff. Deflection lets you do just that and close the distance, which for sword user isn't death sentence because you can still pull back and defend, but for a spear even if you can immediately defend yourself against a counter attack you still end up with someone way too close to properly use your weapon.
>>
>>545563859
So gun crimes are far less frequent which is what we are talking about. You can argue there'd be worse violent crimes. Other studies argue against it. Either way, it's another problem you can try to tackle with other laws and ways. But the law can be enforced in such a way as to prevent most criminals from obtaining a weapon

>spears are godtier defensive/keepout/poking weapons

(a)No, they absolutely aren't, see
>>545554126

(b)In real fights there was no "keepout" or "poking". In 99% of cases they either were decided by push of bodies (and that if one side did not break before contact, which, evidence suggests, was more common than not) or were chaotic brawls in confined spaces, like walltops, rooms or ships' decks. Duels outside of war, of course, were an exception, but you're not going to haul a spear on your shoulder when going about your business just because someone may push you and thing may devolve into a duel.

(c)Most people who used spears, threw them at the enemy. A few exceptions, primarily Greeks of the classical age, stabbed with them. However hoplite fighting was one of the cases of the above-mentioned press of bodies. It required no special training whatever, only equipment, group cohesion and general athleticism.

No, in fact can't pull spear that far back because you would end up with like a meter of wood sticking out in the back ready to get stuck on anything and more importantly hampering your weapon's agility with entirely useless inertia because every rotation has to also rotate entirely useless counter weight in the back. It would also shift the point of balance for the weapon. It's just entirely useless in practice and even switching hands and pulling spear back would expose you to a stab in the gut.

Shafts are light but they are also long, there is one optimal hands position that's natural and gives you leverage, and either moving both hands forward trying to spread them just lessens the agility of the weapon, which is why every HEMA experience no matter how lopsided at distance ends up with the spearman basically giving up if the distance is closed. It's more of property of swords where you usually hold them with very little leverage (hands on the handle and small distance between them, or one hand and only wrist rotates them), but can switch to spear like grip that makes the sword look like an extremely short spear that can actually stab up really close.

Anon, how do you think the physics work?
For the spear to stuck in the shield you have to stab the shield.
You don't stab shields, anon.
Shields are used to preemptively cover an angle of approach. Do you think you actively fucking "block" attacks with it? In a duel?
Your opponent is not a retard they won't be wasting their strength stabbing your shield as that achieves literally nothing.
They will hook your shield and stab you in your throat, they'll feint an attack above your shield and target your legs.
Your arm and your reaction speed is slower than that of a spear thrust. You will be able to deflect a thrust with your shield but if you have enough time to move the shield to such a position a spear could stuck in it, it means there's even more time for the attacker to redirect their thrust.
And just FYI:
1) it's hilariously easy to dislodge a stuck spear because you have all the leverage in the word
2) Relying for shit to get stuck in your shield is a terrible combat plan for a variety of reasons, one of them being wood grain
3) Spears can actually break through most wooden shields. Sure replying on that in combat is a dumb fucking idea but sounds like a perfect answer to your dumb fucking proposition.

I can barely think of any game that uses them properly, with only something like a few Dark Souls greatswords and the Dark Knight from BDO coming to mind.

Yes in fact you do actively block with about anything. Stabbing takes time for spear to travel the given distance which gives you time to adjust your shield or use your weapon bat the stab off. Feints like anything can fail, either because the opponent didn't take the bait or you overcommitted to the feint and he was able to guard the real blow too.

when you attempt to stab someone where their shield isnt, the odds of them moving that shield to block there is practically guaranteed. If you look at the video, its even possible to block with a cloth laid or wood edges buckler, a tool designed explicitely around deflecting.
How do you intend to hook anything with a spear? How fast do you think feints are? and if you dont dedicate to an attack, you realize that leaves you vulnerable to counter attack right? most feints do things like cut short or bait the enemy into a specific defense, and utilize the momentum from that to quickly attack from another angle, With spears you are limited to thrusting and cant really utilize the momentum from one thrust into another.
When using a shield, I have to move it very little for it to cover my, and if you thrust low it is even assisted by gravity. scots specifically fought with their shields high beause of how easy it was to move the shield down for defense.

You cannot utilize leverage when your enemy presses the advantage, his forward movement keeps the tip lodged in the wood. Shields generally didnt break easily.

You don't seem to understand what I'm saying.
None of these attacks were directed at the shield. Shield was not in place in time for the attack to hit it directly.
The shield was moved into the thrust as it was happening which of course is a common thing.
The problem is, all that does is deflecting the weapon. You will never get a spear to stuck in a shield like that, even if the head is aligned perfectly along the grain.
I'm not saying shields are magically ineffective against spears. I'm saying that your pitch about spears getting stuck in shield is retarded to its core.
Unless the spear was thrown, of course.

In fact various especially small shields are precisely used for that. As for getting stuck that's another thing entirely, and the point is not getting tip completely stuck, but just getting a clinch that lets you move in which can happen from both deflection and a tiny bit of stickiness so you can control the weapon in the sense of being able to prevent it from going around the shield just for a sliver of the second. More importantly there is also a point about how in blunt or rubber HEMA many hits can be scored by the spear still making contact after deflection from the shield, while under sharpened weapons circumstances those would either stop at the shield with or without getting stuck, or lose all of the energy needed to score a stopping blow after going around the shield.

Anon, can you read?
The point I'm making is that you won't be getting hit with full swings or thrusts directly against your shield.
Shields ARE used to deflect shit, not block it. Generally, you only block missiles and thrown weapons because you know the angle they'll be coming at long before they can actually hit you.
Bucklers, for instance, used to actively deny an angle of approach and to deflect everything that tries to go around it. You will never fucking block with a buckler because it isn't designed to do that.
The whole "but it gets stuck" is a gross exaggeration. The point these people are making that weapons don't just slide off shields like nothing. That doesn't mean they get helplessly glued to them on touch and the attacker fucking dies of cancer immediately. All the "control" the shield has is also available to the spear, in a better form due to having an incomparably better lever. If you "press" into a spear, it will fucking slide off your shield and you will fucking die because sharp spears require no "energy" to kill a man advancing into it.

> If you "press" into a spear, it will fucking slide off your shield and you will fucking die because sharp spears require no "energy" to kill a man advancing into it.
You can also slide the spear in one of the million positions that let you advance past it, and assuming you have a piece of metal in the way of the spear advancing into it won't kill you either. It's not about just helplessness but being able to even feel clinch a bit is a huge boon to the sword, and in fact no, the shield has better leverage on the spear in most cases since your forward facing hand is the pivot point, and in general your hind hand is at distance of either half the spear length (at which point you're also shortening your reach), or lower giving the press on the spear's tip the advantage in rotating the spear.

The weight of a zweihander is greatly exaggerated in the common mind. They're usually 6-8 pounds at most, which, while heavier than most swords, isn't anywhere close to the hundred pound monsters you often see depicted.
Most manuals for zweihanders often incorporate a bit of thrusting, but those are just a bunch of old books.

Yes, shields are, in fact, aren't useless against spears. I never said they were.
It's just "it'll get stuck" argument is dumb and has nothing to do with the effectiveness of a spear against a shield nor does it magically make the spear utterly ineffective - which was a clear implication in the original "it'll get stuck" post.

Most weapons are highly ineffective against full armour, spears less so because they generally come with a quarterstaff bundled in.

I agree that it won't get stuck but there is certain a lot to stickiness and how useful it is for binding the spear and stopping it from gathering for another stab.
>spears less so because they generally come with a quarterstaff bundled in.
I don't think a build in dagger option in case of sword is less useful than a weapon mediocre at blunt trauma, which sword also can do. In addition it doesn't need to be full armor, but just a breastplate or greaves can make a huge difference in how easy it is to survive the first exchange needed to close distance and put the spear at disadvantage.

>The lever only exists
There are several pivot points involved (binding point, wrist, elbow, shoulder of the defender, front hand on the spear) and for every single of them the spearman is in a better position because of two hands involved, effective leverage to every movement past his forward hand, and the fact that every remaining pivot point works against a long freely moving lever which requires a comparatively higher force exertion for the smaller movement.
>a weapon mediocre at blunt trauma
A swing to the helmet knocks people out like nothing. You don't even need a full baseball swing for that.
You are severely underestimating the blunt trauma a staff can cause and levers in general.
A short-gripped spear behaves quite similar to a half-sword. Also, some spearheads can be literally removed for an actual dagger actually bundled in.

This is plainly wrong, please reread classic mechanics. The only situation where spearman could have advantage is something like sticking the butt of the spear into the ground. We don't even need to consider any pivots other than whatever we choose since they are all equivalent if the same forces are acting on the object.

Right back at you, anon.
The fuck are you talking about?
A small motion on the short side of a lever results in a big motion on the large side.
A large side of the lever allows the short side of the lever to be moved with less force.

When the spear is stuck in a shield, that becomes the pivot point. On one side you have at best an arm worth of a lever - generally, there's almost nothing to work with - on the other you have the whole spear.
The spearman has to make larger movements on his side but he ultimately has to exert less force to make the other side move.
The shieldman theoretically can cause a large movement on the spear side via a small movement of his own but the force required for that is dramatically not in his favour.
What you're talking about is the degree of control the shield has over the spear tip, which is, in fact, dramatically in his favour - but all that can amount to is knocking that tip aside and nothing else, because as soon as more "control" is involved we aren't talking about the movement of the spear tip only but the two people joined in a bind.

Also, I appreciate the graph but holy fuck your approach to naming variables is fucking retarded.
>>
>>545551056
>One of the key advantages the spear holds over the sword is distance. Now, I don’t say “range” here, because obviously a weapon can have immense advantage at longer ranges, but be found to be lacking in close quarters. The spear, on the other hand, can be retracted to any length, allowing it to perform effectively well outside and even well inside the reach of a sword. This means that throughout a fight, the spear wielder would have complete control of distance, as they can keep the sword wielder at bay, with far reaching thrusts and cuts, while simultaneously being able to pull the length back should the sword wielder manage to close in.

>Unlike a sword, a spear can change the direction of an attack incredibly quickly, oscillating between the feet and the head with barely any motion. This is because of the length of the spear. Much like a lever, a small amount of motion in the back translates to enormous motion on the front, so a small movement of the arms can extraordinarily quickly bring the weapon to bear on a new target. The result is that parrying a spear thrust or cut, even if you have a shield or buckler, is incredibly difficult. while a swordsman’s arm needs to make an enormous motion going from the head to the feet, it takes little effort on the spearman’s part to make the same transition. The result is that if a swordsman is deceived by a feint for even the tiniest fraction of a second, the spear can already be thrusting into a completely different part of their body. Even if they do manage to catch this, the spearman’s disengage can be made so quickly that any opening the sword wielder leaves will be taken advantage of.

(continue)
>>
>>545583981
>Contrary to popular belief, the spear is an excellent weapon for parrying. It is speedier than the sword, but it also holds another key advantage - that of leverage. Because of the length of the weapon, and the wide placement of the wielder’s two hands, a spear is incredibly hard to displace. Not only can it easily disengage from a swordsman’s cut or attempt to displace the head, but even at direct contact, a spearman would have little difficult shoving aside a sword blade before lunging in for the kill.

>Now, many might think that the solution to this is to cut off the spear’s head, but this is not at simple or easy as it might seem. The blow itself would be difficult to land on the ever moving spear, but even beyond that, it would take significant force, meaning that the blade itself would need to be heavy (and therefore harder to land a blow with) and the perfect angle to prevent it from simply bouncing away. This is a likely occurrence, especially when one considers that the spear is suspended in the air, not supported firmly from underneath. In addition to that, as shown in the picture below, many spears or other polearms had metal langets running down the sides (or were made entirely out of metal), resulting in almost zero chance of the swordsman effectively carrying out a decapitation

>Throughout medieval history, the polearm has been the weapon of choice, not only of the foot soldier, but of the military nobles such as the Samurai or Knight. In Japan, the Naginata or Yari was used as a primary weapon in battle over the Katana, and in Europe, Knights would usually carry lances, or other weapons such as the bardiche, only using the sword out of necessity. The sword was known as a “sidearm,” as it was an easily carried weapon in civilian life, and a great backup on the battlefield. However, few soldiers ever charged into battle with only their swords in hand.
>>
>>545583427
>>A small motion on the short side of a lever results in a big motion on the large side.
And that's exactly why the small motion of shorter side is more exhausting. The longer side in this case is the shieldman.
>When the spear is stuck in a shield, that becomes the pivot point
Here's a fun question for you. You call it pivot point, assuming it's the point around which we rotate. Now imagine you rotate your spear around the shield, the tip still stays in contact with the spear and you failed to displace anything else than your side of the spear.

The point is that the swordsman doesn't want to move your spear, he wants to keep that one point from moving. Ergo it's in his interest to stop any rotation in which the unmoving pivot is something other than his arm.

Just grab a stick and tell me if it's easier to move some kind of dumbell using the "spear" or just by pushing it with your hand. The shield arm is exactly just pushing your spear with its hand versus trying to apply the force through lever. Hell actually move the dumbell with that stick and pay attention to how your arms move. They are not working together, one arm must always push in the opposite direction to become the fulcrum.
https://ernstfechten.wordpress.com/2018/04/26/some-observations-on-fiores-spear/
> the further away our weapon extends from our body, the poorer our leverage becomes. In order to effectively use a spear for feints or durchwechseln, we need our spear to be extended further away from our body. What this means, however, is that if the opponent is able to displace our spear, we are in a poor position to effectively recover and protect ourselves.

The guy literally makes the mistake of downgrading sword due to a specific often single use weapon for cavalry that literally isn't mean to engage opponents on foot. >>
>>545584178
Anon, all of that is applicable only to the control over the spearhead, which is, again, is limited to deflecting it because you won't really be able to do anything else the opposing side won't be able to counter.
The "control" you're implying is made possible by the bind, using your own example, would be a comparison between moving a dumbell with a long stick when you hold the stick with two hands (spearman moving the shieldman) or by holding the same stick by its very end with a single hand with a terrible grip too (shieldman moving the spearman).
The same goes for the quote. Yes, it is true, but it has nothing to do with the magical "bind". It's just saying that knocking the head aside, or in fact, controlling a parried spear is a fairly trivial task. You don't need the bind for that.
If you try wrestling with a spear in a "bind" you'll only give the spearman the opportunity to bring it back.

Again, the example of stuff getting stuck in the shield was demonstrating said control over swords. Swords literally work the opposite way spears do. Swords rely on the force creating a large movement via leverage, hence when the sword binds, it's in the worst possible position for applying force.
The spear works via leverage created by the grip, allowing large movements to be translated into a large force (for fine tip control here). If it's in the contact with the shield, and both of your hands are on the shaft, you can still use the leverage.
>>
>>545586118
leaving yourself open is more the result of having all the weight at the business end, you'll get the same shit with axes and maces. The flail has thad disadvantage aswell as it just generally being as dangerous to you as it is the enemy and having less precision to boot.

Sure but the problem is that shield, spear, and sword were everywhere and incredibly popular. Tandems of sword and shield, spear and shield, single of either all happened at least pretty often. Swords as sidearms people often try too hard to say that they were the worst weapon you could reach for if other options were available, or even straight up downgrade sword to just a status symbol. Hell in the late medieval even gigantic swords became popular in multiple places like Spain, Italy, Germany and with dedicated manuscripts to them. That wasn't because there was nothing better to use than sword, that was because sword was just really good without needing specific circumstances.
>>545586293
>Anon, all of that is applicable only to the control over the spearhead,
The whole point of swordsman is to keep the stabby bit from stopping his approach, just simply moving down the shaft is a victory.
>by holding the same stick by its very end with a single hand
Again swordsman is the dumbell you want to rotate the tip around and get him stabbed in the fact, he just wants to either keep the tip in place of throw it off far enough to leave you open. In both of these cases he has the advantage at the tip of the spear.
>you'll only give the spearman the opportunity to bring it back.
That's never the point to grab the bit of anything, the point is always to either move past so you throw it off to the side or slide with your shield along the shaft. The advantage in control of the point is paramount as it cuts options from pushing past your shield and now having the stick point in your face, to trying to take a detour by first disengaging and then realigning.
>it's in the worst possible position for applying force.
https://ernstfechten.wordpress.com/2018/04/14/leverage/
>we need to continue to step close to our opponent whenever and wherever we can.
Sword tip vs spear tip is a bad situation, the point that you step in closer and try to work better leverage thru ricasso.

>>545587548
No, swords became popular because it is practical for civilian life because of how easy it is to carry for daily life (as well as being expensive enough as a status symbol [hence decorations are more common on them]). Thus because of how much more often you get to bring swords with you, of course there would be a lot of emphasis on describing and learning the ways to use them. Similar case in Japan, especially with more restrictive weapon ban for samurai later on

>>
>>545587548
Anon, all of those are valid points but all of that also not something I was arguing against.
All these advantages can be capitalized on by deflecting the spearhead with the shield.
Spearhead _binding_ to the shield will not magically enable the shieldman to control the entirety of the spear or the spearman himself. For that specific purpose, the shieldman is in the worse position leverage-wise.
If anything, an attempt to "capitalize" on the bind by trying to manipulate the spear in any way exceeding what simply deflecting it aside would do, will just result in a wasted riposte opportunity.

I'll repeat for the last time, I never tried to argue that shields don't work against spears - they do. I've just stated that the argument of "spears WILL stuck in shields 100% and the spearman fucking dies and is controlled forever and that actually makes them bad in 1v1" was utterly retarded - which it was, on many levels so.
>>
>>545588280
It's not just civilians using swords and we have many cases of specialized civilian weapons like rapier vs estock, or something that is plainly uncivlian like all the big two handed swords or sword and shield fighting. Manuscripts both from Japan and western world also often talk or imply armored opponents. Status symbol thing is also often untrue because ceremonial and decorated swords were a minority compared to plain and working swords.
>>
>>545575702
Both 'halfswording' and the attacker in that video are retarded
>>
>>545589050
Status symbol is the case because swords ARE more expensive compared to the other weapons.
And it is obvious that manuscripts would also talk about its usage in war because it is also used in battles. You act like it is only one or the other.

If it's so I agree with your conclusion, but I also agreed to it before. I still wanted to clarify leverage and show that the sword is at an advantage and spear is still largely under control during bind even if it can still disengage and you shouldn't be pretending it's now superglued to your shield.
>>545589434
