There's not really a point in playing it, though.
You can earn money through mining, trading and fighting and buy ships with it.
That's it. There's nothing else yet.

POST YFW YOU DIDN'T FALL FOR SCAM CITIZEN
>>
>>533068909
I remember downloading it a few months back for a free weekend. NPCs were standing over chairs, tables and everything. I took the tube but the map stopped loading suddenly and I fell into the abyss. Uninstalled. That was SC for me.

This game is a scam for starship lovers. Works as a car dealership. You look at nice virtual models and you buy them. Period. But there is no game. The guy just found a way to get the money from these idiots, men in their 30s or 40s with a lot of money to spend on their hobbies. I know this because my brother is just like that. He's been living abroad and he got this obsession of buying kickstarter boardgames, even though he hasn't played any of them because he has been sending them here. Like... that's super retarded. I'm glad he didn't find out about this game or he would be in.
>>
It's funny because it's free every other month and people still don't bother
It's not good enough to even give away for free, but some people spent thousands

I couldn't even tell you what genre it is, because every single video or info from the game is just people standing around in pre-alpha environments and looking at spaceship models while the level-geometry breaks apart around them.

Nah, it's worth getting the Avenger Titan pack, especially if you can get it discounted during one of these events. With discount it ends up costing the same as whatever generic $20 AAA game of the week and you get a ship that's actually decent and can make progress toward better stuff ingame in a reasonable time instead of a borderline unusable piece of trash like the Aurora and (especially) Mustang.

They are offering lifetime insurance again?
Didn't the backers get salty about that?
>>
>>533086032
So first (2012/13) they said lifetime insurance was only gonna be a thing for early backers and they set a date (with a sale and everything) where it was supposed to be phased out.
Then at some point they sold a variant of an existing jpeg with lifetime insurance, which people got pissed about. At that point they changed their policy to "you can get lifetime insurance on new ships the first time they're sold" and they started regularly putting out worthless garbage ships that only exist to bait people into buying them for the insurance (since it carries over if you upgrade to another ship).
Then they changed it again into "you can get lifetime insurance on new ships but only if you buy it with 100% real money" (you were able to exchange ships for store credit before and use that for purchases).
>>
>>533086032
>>533086332
Not that insurance matter a lot either way. Right now it literally doesn't do anything at all.
And when it does later on it's not supposed to be super expensive to renew anyways.
>>
>>533086462
>it's not supposed
Is what they're claiming, yes. But CIG has been walking back on their promises too many times to count.
They constantly use it as a tool to get people to spend more money while also claiming that it's practically worthless. It doesn't add up.

>>
>space games
>its gameplay is fly into derelict and pick up objects, move objects A to B, hold m1 on rocks or space 'combat' which is always worse atmospheric combat where you just joust but the bigger ship always wins because skill never matters in space
>the best parts about space combat are never included or rarely occur which is infantry ship to ship combat and deployment into conflict zones on asteroids/plantoids
Honestly the 'core' of any space game is fucking boring. Space trucking, mining, exploration is fucking shit and should never be included and exclusively be done by AI allocated by players.
>>
>>533086679
It just shows they have no fucking idea how much of the game is actually going to work.
Reminds me of that new engineer gameplay prototype they showed. It looks good enough for a prototype but holy fucking shit, why are they only now prototyping that crap?
>>
>>533080267
I was backer 34,000 or some shit. Spent $200 on it.

Zero regrets refunding. This game is unintentionally a scam that will die and flop before it is even close to done.
>>
>>533087083
Yes.
The new ship that's about to come out is the first one to feature door (um)locking panels and light switches for each room, exept both of those only work on an extremely basic level. They will have to work on every multicrew ship/ship with an interior again to implement those across the board.
And that's how it goes for everything, some new ship comes out that has a barely working version of something, they have to schedule reworks, rinse and repeat.
>>
>>533086987
Not him but yes. In video games content comes first and then you design the land around it. When you do it the land first and then content what you get is giant, boring, shitty dead maps.
>>
>>533068909

This went worse than the last event. I managed to ride the elevator, the train, and the second elevator. Just as I was about to enter the exhibition, it crashed. Now it crashes every time on the loading screen. Waste of 60GB.
The only time it got better from one version to the next was when OCS or whatever is called was added. Other than that it steadily gets worse and worse. Their technology (Cryengine LMAO) can't sustain a game of this scale. They should have given up on the MMO meme, it will never work properly.
>>
>Load the game (this take several minutes even if you have a blazing fast machine)
>Wake up in your bed
>Wander around trying to figure out how to get to the space dock (there's seldom much in the way of guidance and no quality of life features like arrows or a lighted trail on the floor or anything)
>Marvel at the sheer amount of...just stuff! Everywhere! There's NPCs T-posing. There's weird vending machines. You get weird popups that you're hungry! You're thirsty! There's weird kiosks selling noodles and stuff. There's weird kiosks that may be for missions or insurance or whatever but none of those work.
>By the way while all this is going on your computer is screaming for the sweet embrace of death at every step
>You eventually figure out you can, actually, run to speed things up
>...but running too much will actually kill you
>So you run, stop, run, stop in short bursts because it's faster than the default speed of "mosey"
>You wander through all these weirdly empty shopping districts. Perhaps you poke inside and find there's a shop "kiosk" that actually sells shit, but you can also walk right up to the rack and buy the jacket or whatever? Like it's kind of a cool level of detail but it's also completely insane.
>Like to change floors you literally have to press a button to call the elevator, wait for it to arrive, get in the elevator, physically press the button for the floor you want, wait for it to get there, then get out. And do this every time if you're trying to run errands. And for every single floor if you need to visit multiple floors.
>Get to the train going TO the space dock.
>Wait for the train to arrive like one of those shuttles at the airport.
>Shit, you got on the wrong one, like those shuttles at the airport.
>It's not a loading screen, you literally have to stand there and ride the train to the next stop to get off.

>Get on the right train going to the space port.
>Literally ride the train for like 5-10 minutes to get there.

>Get to the place where your ship is supposed to be
>(Lots of time it isn't there which means you have to go back to the elevator, ride back to the main floor, go to the kiosk again, and order a different ship, then go back to the elevator, ride it BACK down...)
>It is a really cool moment to walk out into the hangar and see your ship there, not gonna lie.
>...but it's undercut by the fact that you have to figure out how to physically get on the ship, which means your Slow Motion Hero Walk is ruined by Malcolm Reynolds, say, bumbling around the hull of the Firefly trying to find the button that releases the elevator or the ladder or whatever so you can actually get IN the ship.
>Eventually find and activate the thing to get in the ship.
>Climb up and get inside the ship.
>Open the door at the top of the thing to get inside the ship.
>Retract the ladder or elevator or whatever.
>Sometimes go and physically press a button on the ship's engine to start it.
>Sometimes flail around to find the light switch to turn on the lights so you can see to press the button on the ship's engine to start it.
>Physically walk up the ship to the captain's seat
>Physically sit down
>Physically press some buttons to get everything online
>Actually call air traffic control or whatever it's called to let you leave
>Wait for them to open the hanger door
>Hover around in the hanger for a second and randomly crash into things because the flight controls are a combination of weirdly futzy and intricate with totally kludgy
>Eventually, carefully, and hopefully you didn't blow up and die trying to get your spaceship out, you slowly and warily nose forward and...
>Oh, shit, you're just above the city or whatever, you have to actually fly through the atmosphere and actually leave the planet
>Now you're in space...

Assuming they deliver what they say they will, planets will have resources that players will want to sell. Then to get easier access to resources, players may want to build bases on planets. And then other players may want to either take those bases for themselves or settle nearby for easier protection.
And from there you get lots of content.
>>
>>533083803

I think the Aurora has 3 SCU, Avenger has 8. More importantly though the Avenger has an actual cargo bay, which makes it much more practical for doing delivery missions with the small boxes that you carry by hand. It also has really good guns for the size/price and decent defense so it can actually do PvE missions as well.

Many of the people who bought the game when they were in their early 30s are bald, have kids, might have already married and divorced.
And many probably already died.
I wonder if they wrote in their Will who will inherit their ships in Star Citizen.
Considering how long this is taking, it's a reasonable concern.

like the progress that gets scrapped and has to be redone every three years? Or the additional guns to supplement that lackluster ground combat? Or the non-existent network improvements so you can actually play the game when there's more than 15 people on a server. 9 years and you still can't reliably deliver a box from one planet to another.
>>

Why anyone would back/buy this other than getting X4 is beyond me. X4 is a little jank, and the interface is pretty bad, but it's a working game actually being patched. Only things really missing are multiplayer and planetary landings, which are things that barely work in Star Citizen anyway. Egosoft has hinted at adding support for the former.

On foot? Absolutely not. Combat AI doesn't work and they just stand in place letting themselves be shot at.
Ship combat can be fun but the AI isn't very smart and frequently glitches around, making it hard to hit.
Ship combat against players is extremely difficult because the only people that will fight you are the ones that have meta loadouts and will shred you within seconds if you don't also have a meta loadout. And then they'll shred you in a couple more seconds because they have hundreds of hours more practice.

you cannot unironically believe the curent "balance" of the pre-pre-alpha economy will stay the same
the chances that on release you're going to be stuck in a grindfest that puts even Silkroad Online to shame are infinitely higher than you getting access to whale ships within a reasonable timeframe
>>
>>533090760
You can get a ship for like $45 or even less, but its only purpose would be farming money to get a decent one.
Also keep in mimd the game is 100% P2W, a cheap ship cannot damage a expensive one even if you continuously fire at point-blank since its weapons cannot overpower the shields. In b4 "get 100 friends to attack together"

Remaking several ships while still in """"alpha"""" to keep them up to quality standards, even tho there's dozens of other ships not even completed is one of the most retarded things, they should literally be pushing out rough boxed out models with placeholder textures until in late stages of development and then do several patches where they finalize 10 or so ships in one go.

Yes, the game was fundraised in 2012, pre-production began in 2010 and actual production happened in 2011, during fundraising the release date was sometime in 2014, given SQ42 was supposed to be a mid budget space combat sim, a roughly three years of full production was well in the realm of possibility.

Why everything in this game sucks so much?
They just had to make subnautica in space. Subnautica has everything Star Citizen has, it just happens to be underwater:
- first person gameplay
- can pilot different kinds of submarines (just make them spaceships instead. For game purposes, just use the same physics of the subs in water as the physics of the ships floating in space)
- have a mech suit for hazard zones
- have a massive submarine that's pretty much a mobile base, where you can build lockers, bed quarters, even food producing stuff, and dock your small submarine or your mech suit
- can seamlessly enter and create a base, moonpool where you can dock your submarine or mech suit

If a indie game maker made subnautica, they just have to use the EXACT SAME ENGINE, and change the assets holy fucking shit

I played for about 3-4 hours over the past 2 nights, never even made it into space.

Walk around space station, explore a bit, take train to a new zone, buy a plushie doll at the kiosk, take wrong train back to the first are, take train back to the 2nd area, take train to 3rd area space port, call in space ship, try to put plushie on space ship, space ship bugs out, plushie disappears. Get in ship, try to use comms for the hanger to open. Comms is broken. Wont work cant open hanger. Go back, call in another ship, open hanger, go outside hanger and fly around, search for missions, try to set waypoint to mission, waypoint wont work and map keeps bugging out. Eventually get it to work, begin jump drive, game freezes, 30 seconds later ship is gone and I am floating in space.
Kill self, respawn in, take trains, go to ship terminal, no ships show up. The game is bugged. Ask people for help, delete user file, log back in repeat going on trains, etc. go to terminal, no ships. Give up.

Next day. Repeat respawn, train, etc. ships still dont show up. Close game, log into website, reset character, have to wait 15 minutes to log back in while reset takes place..
Log back in, repeat train sequence etc. call in ship. Get in ship, call for hanger to open, hanger opens, slowly start raising, hanger closes by istelf.... CALL IN HANGER, hanger opens, get out of hanger, start flying around the hanger....
>Area is off limits, engaging auto pilot
Nothing happens... keep flying in same direction. SHIP BLOWS UP.
REPEAT TRAIN, etc. Call in ship, go to hanger, ship is bugged and several feet off the ground, cant get in ship. go back in elevator, go back to ship terminal, call in ship. go back to elevator go back to hanger get in ship, call hanger to open, fly out, say this time I will just go straight up to avoid the city.
"THIS AREA IS OFF LIMITS ENGAGING AUTO PILOT"
CANT MOVE, GET BLOWN UP
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

And there was more bullshit not listed.

Eternal Tech Demo the game. Get in the game, fly your ship around for a bit, do nothing then log out. All the while crashing, bugging, stalling, clipping, waiting and levitating your way through it.
>>
>>533104024
They used to have an orange death zone hologram cover the city areas. It was incredibly ugly and everyone justifiably complained about it. Then they added the auto pilot thing.
The auto pilot is supposed to gently move you away from the area they don't want you in. But it only works if you're slow. If you're too fast the autopilot can't change your trajectory fast enough to get you out of that area and it kills you instead.
It's stupid.

Hi, armchair designer here. The Nomad doesn't make any fucking sense.
Cargo separate from interior: why?
A lot of space wasted on a "living room" with nothing on it: why?
Not even a shower. What is this thing designed for?
This ship could be 2x smaller and have the same functionality. It's big for the sake of being big. Not comfy at all, even.
Pic related, huge room of nothing.

No, it's intentionally exposed for some unknown reason. That's why they've got suit lockers in that little hallway right next to it, so you can keep enviromental suits there and put them on before getting in the mining turret thingy.

do you have access to any fun ships if you just contributed $45 dollars ages ago when the game was still convincing? I think I had some piece of shit cheap cargo ship that wasn't remotely interesting. if I have more choices I'll try it otherwise I don't care

You probably still just have an Aurora or Mustang if you paid $45. If you get on during the next two weeks you can rent just about any ship in the game and mess around with it though.
>>
>>533106571
Cool features, but when are they going to fix the servers running like shit and the 50 player limit?
You'd think that ought to be done first before you pile up and bury yourself in systems you can't use properly.
>>
They should put a stocks system in-game where you can short / bet against CIG: for every feature they cut and every delay you get in-game credits and/or ships. Alternatively if they over-deliver or are early you lose stuff.
>>
>>533108509
From what I can tell, they don't want to improve the current server system because it's not what they want to use for the full game anyways.
The next big thing for servers they're working on is server meshing and once that's in they want to work on getting more players and making it more stable.

"Rent" for free, but what you can rent changes every day so if you're interested in checking out all the ships start ASAP.

they scrapped what they had and redid it a few years back (without telling anyone?), people were expactant of a release date like earlier this year, or last citcon, then they released the roadmap and they're at 1/5 or 2/5 on all 28 chapters. they've pulled majority of the MMO people into the project which is why this year sucked ass and kept getting delayed (last year too). who knows how far along they actually are, but shit's fucked, 2 years best case scenario for a release

To some degree those updates have actually been downgrades, a lot of the pre-2016 stuff was insanely heavy on polycount etc. In many cases you can't actually tell as a player that things have changed because they've used shaders and parallax occlusion whatever mapping really well but they've cut the performance load of ships and other assets down to like 10% or less of what they used to be.

Keep in mind that the following is not a defense of star citizen as a game but an answer to the design questions from a fellow armchair designer. I have not even seen the ship in question, I'm going off your description alone.
>Cargo separate from interior: why?
So the pilot can jettison it in case of a hull breach or attack without any danger to the pilot. Also offloads weight in case of a fuel crisis in case you need that extra bit of emergency fuel for flights
>A lot of space wasted on a "living room" with nothing on it: why?
space would get claustrophobic eventually on long flights, I'd imagine it's a mental health consideration
>Not even a shower. What is this thing designed for?
you'd better hope the shower is not in the same irrigation system as the bathroom because that water is gonna get recycled unless you can somehow find a place in space where you can convert moisture into water.
