Completly agree.

Actually the 5th element was the lucky break, Luc Besson didn't get the casting he wanted at first (julia roberts ? Really?) and it was for the best.

Besson is an awful script writer and cannot cast. He's a good director, Leon or Nikita are just great, but you cannot let him work alone (kinda Georges Lucas).

Also for Valerian, the best option would still be french actors familiar with the characters (they clearly had no idea how to play their characters) and Laurelin is supposed to be a french medieval chick with redhair who got recruited by Valerian during time travel. So yeah, not Cara.

Will anglos ever know the sheer kino of french BD? It continues to astound me to this day that the english world seems to have no equivalent to france's almost exclusively domestic graphic novel culture. Granted, there have been some particularly successful series translated and exported (Asterix et Obelix for instance) but in terms of cultural relevance it's like night and day. Any anons here know why france goes so hard for graphic novels compared to literally everywhere else? (AND NO MANGA DOES NOT COUNT)

The worst part is the sheer extent of french kino that will remain totally unknown to most anglos as far as I'm concerned; sure, you can always watch translated versions of french films, but much like trying to woo a woman in a language you do not natively speak, many of the concepts are lost in translation as you say, drastically decreasing the film's value. Especially for french, in which many of the jokes, witty lines and wordplay in films are very difficult to replicate in a language other than french.

Intouchables, l'effondrement, le prenom, le diner de cons, [any film starring alain delon], and many more. Such a shame. I wish we still had a cultural monopoly on the world like the americans now do.

>Luc Besson just happened to know a lot of super models and gave them roles in it. Frankly, it makes complete sense to have to0ns of beautiful women in sci-fi because in the future technology would allow it.
The costumes for ‘The Fifth Element’ were designed by Jean Paul Gaultier.
Besson could easily have just found models thru Gaultier, since he was and is a top French Couture designer, readily acquainted with supermodels.

>why france goes so hard for graphic novels
Like them or hate them, the frogs are artists. They like making shit. Their only problem is that most of the time their art is too heavy for burgers, and subsequently the rest of the world to appreciate. It's why the bongs pump out musicians the americans go wild over while france, despite fantastic scenes for a lot of genres, has nothing to show for itself internationally save for some watered down examples like daft punk

The scene where he went down on that air hostess when the ship was about to take off… that made me feel things as a kid. Gave me a fetish for women moaning and breathing heavily. And also for messy hair.

The entirety of Metal Hurlant can be summed up as "Neanderthal shoots at Pterodactyl with a laser gun." Some of the ligne claire stuff is outstanding, but most of their comic books read like movie storyboards, with intricate plots that fail to play to the strengths of the medium. If you discount capeshit, I prefer many of the works found in anglosphere comics to what French put out.
