>The long awaited James Cameron sequel to the highest grossing movie of all-time hit tracking this morning with a projected opening of at least $150M. Tracking has it higher near $175M, but rivals are bullish at $200M.

>Here’s the thing — the pic is being comped against holiday fanboy titles, and the numbers that are being seen need to be taken with a grain of salt. Avatar isn’t a front-loaded opening weekend fanboy movie, it’s one that will play and play. A $150M opening is 95% ahead of the original 2009 title’s $77M.

>Everyone is going nuts over Avatar: The Way of Water forecasts because the unaided awareness (that indicator which measures those polled mentioning their want-to-see of the title without being prompted in a poll) is in the high 30s to 40s across all demos including Latino and Hispanic and Black. These are powerful figures which any studio would die for.

what the fuck does this mean. 77m is like 106m today

No chance it makes 2B and beats the first, Avatar 4 and 5 won’t see the light of day

Huh? That’s not very good.
>>
>>177168535
just because the first movie was successful doesn't mean this one will be.
zoomers have never even heard of avatar and everyone that saw the original is too old to give a shit now.
that being said I only torrented the first movie and it sucked
>>
>>177169145
i wouldnt say it sucked but it was aggressively mediocre especially from someone who has made classics in the past
>>
The actual story of Avatar so boring that all people are discussing about this movie is the potential box office? Is Jake Sully and Pandora that uninteresting? You’re all more invested in potential profits you’ll never get a dime of.
>>

When does the world open the box?

the cyberpunk premise is interesting, of jacking in to the treenet and getting a new body. it's just that everything surrounding that premise is gay treehugging nonsense

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>177169454
Wrong. Great movies like Lawrence of Arabia or even T2 are meant to be big theater experiences but are still very enjoyable on the home TV, because they have good stories, characters, scenes and music. Avatar had the 3D wow factor but very little else.

>>177169564
Top Gun was a cult classic and starred Tom
Cruise, dishonest comparison

>>
>>177169962
>Also never have I ever encountered a single real human that has told me “dude you have to watch avatar it’s amazing”
it's because you were 5 years old in 2009. Hype and word of mouth was massive.
>>
>>177169564
Retard tier take. Top Gun is a classic property and Maverick got extremely strong word of mouth from fucking boomers when they found out it was a fun movie without any white people bad politics. My mom made me go see it with her. No one cares about Avatar.
>>
I'm shocked that the original only opened to $77 Million, but I guess it did have amazing legs. Will the new one do as well? Seems like with the new MCU films everyone rushes out to watch it on opening weekend so they don't get spoiled then it drops off a cliff, and everyone who didn't see it gets spoiled so they have no reason to go. Every MCU film is just an ad for upcoming MCU films so actually watching them is unnecessary. Avatar was an experience that you had to see, if the sequel can get some of that juice it'll be a phenomenon.
>>
>>177170405
it might have opened in a smaller amount of theaters than normal, mostly IMAX, and then expanded, not sure though
>>
>>177170595
According to BoxOfficeMojo it opened wide to 3,452 theaters. It had only a 1.8% drop in its second weekend. I don't think the sequel will have legs that good but even a 40% drop would be exceptional in the current climate.

A successful Avatar 2 in my view will be like Temple of Doom. It begins with action set pieces till the very end.
