Thread for the discussion of classic cinema and arthouse films. Previous:>>157636573All the mega links are dead.
First for Lilya
So why were the megas taken down again?
>>157642065>Nooooo you must let the thread die so I can make a new one!!!! We can't have serious and intellectual discussion with dead links in the OP!!!
>>157642180Autist having a hissy fit. He was crying all day yesterday. Sad really.
>>157642239>Nooooo I must have charts and megas and links and fun activities in the OP to invite newcomers with open arms!!! Think about the net gain!! Just think about how much more lively the discussion will be if 3 new people discover Chungking Express!!!!

Is it just me or /film/ is more into Asian cinema than European cinema?
>>157642659>implying I read it>>157642675Faggot shit
>>157642725Yes, we love quirky 90s Asian cinema.
I put on City Lights but I don't know if I can finish this. I can't stand it. Worse, I got two more Chaplin films.
>>157642772>I don't know if I can finish this. I can't stand itWhy? What's wrong? From Chaplin, I've only seen The Kid and thought it was amazing.
>>157642725European cinema is mostly worthless. Only the French are great (or used to be). Other European countries are lucky to have a couple of great films each decade.
Guess nobody can restore the mega links because nobody downloaded the stuff in them.
>>157642725Spammy nu/film/ redditors certainly are.
>>157642808I have the books but I'm not gonna bother to put them up. My Mega space is taken up by other stuff.

>>157642808>Come on reddit, we can do this! We will restore the megas, re-do the lists, create a new spreadsheet; all in the name of the poor newcomes!!!

>>157644219it's good but they need more hyperviolent/extreme stuff. i feel like most of their films are vanilla and i have to look elsewhere for my thrills

>>157644763Yi Yi and it's not even close lol
>>157644763Don't watch Yi Yi as your first Yang film, but go for it if you've seen at least a few others.Rebels is great.
>>157644763Yup, I'm thinking it's time for Tsai kino.
>>157644839Never seen Yang, what should I watch?
>>157644864He only has seven films and they're all good, so might as well start from the beginning with That Day on the Beach. I personally started with his second film, Taipei Story, and that's a great one to go with too.

I can relate with everything except for women.
Oh so that girl actually did like me she was just pretending to be a godard-esque character
King Vidor's The Crowd, now that is a film.
Pan Nalin's Samsara was a great watch. I've seen Valley of Flowers from him before, which I liked. It's not really that good of a Buddhist film, because it really centred only around one concept, oneness. Wasn't subtle with dealing with it either, the man enters the coursing river on several occasions, the wife gives the children the simple parable of the stick on the river, the end with the teaching inscribed into the stone. Deep and meditative it isn't, so I didn't really think I should approach it from that perspective. It's more to do with the worldly things, hence we spend most of the film seeing the man barter grain, fight with locals about prices, buying western consumer products, having sex with seasonal workers. I respect Palin in the sense that he doesn't shy away from showing the sexual nature of humans, but still he manages to keep it dignified. The ending was great, though I think most of the people miss the point of it, at least from what I've read. They mention her being a feminist voice in a cultural sphere that is mostly composed of males. While the monologue does way the viewer to give heed to the females who are left behind when a man takes on the robes, I found it to be more about eliciting empathy towards the wordly way in a convincing argument. After all, it can't be easy to leave it all behind and pursue something intangible. It's a fight Siddhartha through in his head as well, I'd think. A necessary step to achieve enlightenment. Is it unfair towards those left behind? Is it selfishness? It's clear the end is the culmination of the film, which isn't a view of Buddhism from within, but from the outside. It seems to some that the ending was ambiguous about his choice to return to the wife or not. I think it's clear he didn't return. The worldly ways were necessary to understand what he was letting go of, not to stay dwelling on them.
>>157645450I only have very cursory knowledge of Buddhism, but this certainly seems interesting. Which of the ones you've seen from Nalin would you recommend more? Never seen anything from him.
>>157645450yeah shit slapped

>>157646973>1973Of the ones I've seen, Erice's.
>>157646973World on a Wire
>>157646973Godzilla vs. Megalon
>>157645618I'd recommend starting with Samsara, it's probably his most accessible. Valley of Flowers is more of a romantic film that deals with reincarnation. If that doesn't sound bad, I'm sure you'd like it. I've heard some divisive stuff from Angry Indian Goddesses, so I'm interested in watching that eventually. Though I think the next Nalin I'm watching is Ayurveda, since I like documentaries, I feel it's easier to connect with it. Some other good films I've enjoyed about Buddhism, Amongst White Clouds, Tulku & Milarepa. I should also watch Herzog's Wheel of Time.

>>157650180yeah, he's >>157650299 right. normies mostly like disney shit and tv shows. don't show normies "weird" films lmao. their "morality" makes them want to punish you and punish the directors, if it were up to them there would be no art. also, i fucking hate watching movies with women. going to the theatre on a date, especially a first date, is the worst date idea. i even hate watching movies with girlfriends... watching films should be platonic and intellectual, not erotic and emotional, because then you miss out on the whole movie and might as well not have watched it at all.
>>157650417Man of MarbleMan of IronDanton

>>157650487>watching films should be platonic and intellectual, not erotic and emotional, because then you miss out on the whole movie and might as well not have watched it at all.Films are always -- or at least should be -- an emotional experience instead of "intellectual" endeavor. What are your favorite films?
>>157650670They're not mutually exclusive.
What are some intellectual films?
>>157651112What are some boring films? What are some weird films? What are some heartfelt films? Any film can be one of these, any film can be an intellectual film, it's up to the viewer to interpret it that way. Take agency, don't let the film dictate, dicate yourself.

>>157651346>Fallen Angels>Balthazar Is it bad if these are two of my all time favorite movies?
>>157651482>/film/-core.Hardly. A few of them are for sure, but most aren't.
>>157651535Balthazar is easily the best film there and a masterpiece, so no. Fallen Angels is fine.
>>157650487Normies are mostly into anime.
>>157651302Denying means you're stuck in rudimentary habits when it comes to watching films. The experience of viewing, is malleable. You are at the epicentre of it all when watching, absorbing what is shown. Intellectual approach follows after the fact, you don't jot down stuff while watching or try to make a mental map of everything happening in the film while watching. No, all that follows after you've seen it. What I mean by taking agency, is that you yourself apply yourself to the film, take initiative, don't let the film spoon-feed basics, think about them yourself. If you can't retroactively engage with a film in a meaningful way, it means you're still stuck in an undeveloped viewing habit.

>>157652471Don't care. What makes Khrustalyov, My Car! or The Cremator /film/core? Just because someone suggested them daily for 3 months or so? I like them but just because someone talked about a movie for a while doesn't make it /film/core. There's a lot of shit there too, only a eunuch would like a chart with a Gallo flick
>>157652422If you were actually here for that long then you would know that there were memes associated with most of those films, and the rest were picked because they were actually good films

>>157652571Like I said, just because someone talked about a film for a month or 2 doesn't make them /film/core. No one talks about most of them now and Han Ye has been a meme for more than a year.
>>157652709The Tsai shilling started 2 months ago at most newfag. He was only mentioned from time to time as a recommended contemporary director before that. Let alone the newfag obsession with Neon God.
>>157652564what makes han ye /film/core? 2 autists obsessively spamming it and nobody caring?
>>157652788But it does. The /film/core charts were never supposed to be taken seriously as a reflection of /film/'s taste. They were just to show the films and memes that were being talked about most at the timet. anon who made both /film/core charts
>>157652849Literally everyone went on the hunt for it when it first came up, plus subsequent meme status. But I'm nta, and I don't actually give a fuck about /film/core. The only original thing to come out of here is American Eunuch and Han Ye.

>>157655904Where in my post did I even insinuate that I "only like canonical films"? I gave you the reason why entry level people discuss entry level films. Once again, you have to come up with imaginary people in your schizo head to get mad at. I sincerely hope you are underage because if you are over 20 and still think this way you are incredibly pathetic.

Tonight I'm finally watching Full Metal Jacket
>>157656084See, instead of being able to actually respond to what I'm saying you latch onto everything I say that is irrelevant to the conversation. In the next post Mr. Shapiro can you please respond to the following:>Is Criterion responsible for creating the canon of cinema?>Is Criterion the reason the "arthouse" canon is discussed?>Why do you seethe so hard at a streaming service? (It being "reddit" is not a proper reason)
>is that you John Wayne >is this me Literally what did he mean by this
>>157656347That they were encouraged to be the same macho persona by the drill sergeant while the drill sergeant was also being the persona. It was to call bullshit to the anti-individuality they were being forced to embrace
>>157656244You're a fucking retard with no understanding of buzzwords. They're all signifiers for a large proportion of makind with a midwit IQ. >streaming servicekek>Is Criterion responsible for creating the canon of cinema? In a large part, yes. Distribution is absolutely key in establishing the canon. There are many canonical directors such as Ozu or Mizoguchi who weren't known in the west until Kurosawa popularized Japanese cienema for eunuchs like you and started western distribution.>Is Criterion the reason the "arthouse" canon is discussed?Yes, they're the main distributor of entry-level arthouse, so newfags will trust the label. Just look at this shit >>157655525 - a lifelong quest to pretend to have "superior taste", completely defined by popular Criterion releases, only to go back to their true reddit (read: midwit) nature and watch Spielberge and Fincher again.
anyone have a link for A Geisha's Diary 1961 in good quality, i can only find shit quality.
>>157656766>the westOnly eunuchs use this reddit term.
You guys are really hostile today. Can you like, calm down?
>>157655349>doing heavy liftingYou are doing shit you fucking idiot.
>>157657065I'm pretty calm. I'm probably going to watch The Last Picture Show tonight. Hope it's as good as Paper Moon.
>>157656766You unironically believe Criterion was responsible for creating the canon instead of them issuing the most popular canonized films like Stalker or Seventh Seal in order to make money? >Yes, they're the main distributor of entry-level arthouse, so newfags will trust the label. So "newfags", new into arthouse, won't watch entry-level arthouse because they are the most accessible and ENTRY-LEVEL films but because they blindly love Criterion?> a lifelong quest to pretend to have "superior taste", completely defined by popular Criterion releasesAre you unable to view the mainstream canon arthouse films as anything but "popular Criterion releases"? Once again, those films would still be discussed ad nauseam even if Criterion never existed. This whole argument is completely pointless, you are essentially arguing that "entry-level bad!!!" and that it shouldn't be discussed, seemingly failing to realize that at least half of this general is people who are "entry-level". Instead of whining that entry-level people talk about entry-level films, post something worthwhile.
There's nothing wrong with entry level movies.
>>157656766for someone constantly spouting midwit ad hominem, this entire post reeks of shortsighted midwit nonsense.

>>157657834At the same level as Fallen Angels.
>>157657591Why are you even going on about who defined the canon? This all started because of your inability to understand a basic buzzword such as Criterion-core.>>157657770Such as?
