If you're into creature feature schlock, this and Boar are both on Shudder. The former is definitely the better of the two, even if the latter has brief moments of Rictus Erectus fighting a giant killer boar. Beyond that, watch VHS94, I guess. /hor/ has so many opinions about it.

Just finished pic related and I dug it. It had one of those typical LOL WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON Japanese horror endings that would have usually annoyed me, but the movie overall was just too good to be bothered by it. Never really tries to spoop you into a heart attack or shock you with gore though, but it maintains a wonderfully creepy atmosphere from the very beginning to the end. It also looks fantastic for a made-for-TV movie.

reposting so we can continue the slasher discussion here

>>157632678
The way Black Christmas presents it's killer is very unconventional though, not at all like majority of slasher films.

>>157632710
>>157632768
>>157632828
I was arguing that Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the first slasher because it features so many elements of the genre but Black Christmas may have been the first "defined" slasher that standardized the tropes. But if we want to get technical, there's also Peeping Tom from 1960.

>>157632694
I haven't really seen enough giallo to be able to distinguish the difference between the two but it's probably a good place to start. Categorically, I probably wouldn't call House a slasher film but when it gets to the routine of the kills -- picking the girls off one by one, it starts to feel a lot like it.
>Wes Craven's creativity, whether it be explicitly and absolutely supernatural as in the Elm Street series or a unique twist on the genre like in Scream
While he absolutely did refresh the genre with those ideas I'm not sure how explicitly creative I would call it. For example I think the idea of Freddy, a killer that kills you in your dreams, is more creative than the idea of a supernatural slasher itself. And even then what makes Freddy (and I guess Ch*cky) work is that they were originally human, right? If it were just a monster or something, would that really feel like a slasher? I'm not sure if a radical change needs to take place but I do think slashers need to be properly modernized. I'm tired of "throwback" work. It's lazy and never as good as the actual films from that time period.
>While I like Halloween, I don't think Michael Myers is a particularly interesting concept
I don't even think Jason is an interesting concept, I really don't get what people see in him. The reverse Psycho thing going on from the first film with Pamela as the villain is a lot more intriguing.

The adults were 100% at fault. Throughout the film, you don't see them make the slightest effort to educate or understand these kids (Gordon being the exception, and he was the only adult the children respected a little). All these kids received were bullying from other children, and discrimination from the adults, who were afraid of them just because they were different. Even before they killed a single person, the military already wanted to lock them up or kill them. Fuck them. The kids didn't do anything wrong.

I think we agree more than we disagree, though I was referring to Freddy's dream abilities when I was referring to the creativity. I think we need to tap into ideas like that to revitalize the genre and I don't think we see that sort of creativity often enough. I don't think Jason is a particularly interesting concept either, and I think his appeal comes from his appearance and that aura of rage he gives off but, I think as far as the films themselves go, they had the right idea when they made films like Part 7, even if the execution left a lot to be desired. They were trying to do something creative and fun by making Jason fight not-Carrie, it just didn't pan out as well as it could have. I still think shlock ideas like that should be encouraged and made use of.
>And even then what makes Freddy (and I guess Ch*cky) work is that they were originally human, right? If it were just a monster or something, would that really feel like a slasher?
As for this, I'm not so sure. I think it's easy to cross the line into creature feature territory, but doesn't Alien kind of feel like a slasher in a way? Maybe not the first chunk of the movie, but once the thing matures and is skulking around the ship, it does take on a slasher feeling, doesn't it? But with that said, generally I think it's best to keep it within the realm of humanity, as I feel having a strong screen presence on the part of the killer is a boon (though maybe not essential). It's a different feeling with a monster.

yes
and she doesn't immediately "fuck Martin"
she does it as a way of coping and inverting the initial power play, but it objectively still is rape (as hot as it indeed is)
and the vengeance part is by proxy, but still
the mechanism of Flesh + Blood is rape & revenge, through and through
>>
>>157634155
Would you really consider Michael and Jason brutal and realistic? Seriously? And Jason absolutely has a motive. I think the only slasher film villains I've felt even a little frightened by have been Freddy and Billy. Billy is what I would consider a realistic killer.

>>157634237
>a slasher must have a singular humanoid killer that murders a group of college aged kills. is that a good start?
Halloween, NoES, and Scream predominantly feature high schoolers. And slashers were mostly a teen phenomenon, right? That being said I think that's one part of the formula that should be excised. Focusing exclusively on a set age range doesn't leave much room for creativity, besides, a lot of slasher films actually do include the death of one or even a few older people.

But a single humanoid killer for sure. What about a location? Do we agree that slasher films take place in one location? Or are there a lot of titles that invalidate that? One that I think can be said definitely is that there has to be something connecting the victims together, but the connection could be as simple as them all being friends. Does that sound good?

i had high expectations and it for the most part it did not disappoint
it executed the shift from "oh okay this is one of them A24 slow burners the kids love to meme about" to OH SHIT! very well and it did a fairly good job of keeping up the surreal pace from there. i was afraid it was going to lose some steam near the end and it did for a bit but the ending itself mostly mended whatever it lost with some closure
most importantly, i can't help but feel like the whole thing is an homage to this classic

>I was referring to Freddy's dream abilities when I was referring to the creativity. I think we need to tap into ideas like that to revitalize the genre
My only thing is, what other ideas "like that" are there? What could be done? What's a new creative way to be a serial killer? Even Candyman already took the "Bloody Mary" approach. Maybe a killer that can only kill you if you eat dry toast on a Tuesday? I really don't know.

And funny you mention that as I'm about to rewatch Part 7. It's one of the few Friday films I actually liked. But taking concepts into account I think Jason Goes to Hell had an interesting enough idea where his soul inhabited other people's bodies, although the execution was shit. I'm also not sure how well a possessor-slasher could realistically pan out. It's something that sounds very generic but also hasn't really been done, right? I thought Nightmare on Elm Street 2 pulled it off pretty well. Ron Grady's death is probably my favorite slasher kill.

>but doesn't Alien kind of feel like a slasher in a way?
To be completely honest, I haven't seen Alien yet, but you raise a really good point. Because I forgot about Terminator. The first Terminator film feels quite a lot like a slasher film despite the killer being a future robot with a gun.

>>157635105
>In the early movies, yeah.
I can at least see how Michael could be scary, given the right context, but personally he just doesn't do anything for me. I think Freddy is scarier because anyone is vulnerable to his attacks. Everybody dreams and "every town has an Elm Street". He has full control of the situation, which makes him nigh unbeatable. You know it's like "there's nothing to fear but fear itself" and Freddy thrives off fear, he's fear personified. This is mostly hypothetical though as the movies have done little to delve into how scary Freddy truly can be.

*Planet Terror
watchable, but nothing too special, imho
Death Proof is slow boiling, but I love it: first half is a weird slasher (all kills in an instant), second half is a rape and revenge
except the killer is a premature ejaculator, and is thus forced to rapekill with his car
also, the lovemaking to a car in the second part is a lot better than in titane, desu
plus it has Jordan Ladd and Mary Elizabeth Winstead in their prime
also, Death Proof as a standalone film isn't the same as in the two part Grindhouse (in the former Stuntman Mike actually gets his lap dance)
>>

Also, do the Friday the 13th films canonically take place in the future? Is that why Jason X is like that? The first movie was released in 1980 and takes place in either 1980 or 1979, but Part 2 released only one year later in 1981 takes place 5 years after the events of the first film. Then between Part 4 (1984) and Part 5 (1985) another 5 years past because Tommy Jarvis goes from 12 to 17. And finally Part 7 (1988) opens up directly after the events of Part 6 with Jason still at the bottom of the lake, but then immediately has a 7 year timeskip where Tina goes from 10 to 17.

I think the problem with nu-slashers is that they're primarily being made by edgelords who grew up on Hostel and unironically idolize slasher villains, so instead of more fun or creative kills you get a five minute scene of a woman begging and crying while the "badass" killer slowly saws into a fake leg.
They also take the "people only watch for the kills" too literally and either just make it a boring montage of unrelated murders or half-assedly write a protag who exists solely to be torturously killed in a "shocking" twist ending that was obvious to anyone remotely familiar with the genre. It's not a coincidence that most of the beloved 80s slasher classic have characters other than the killer that people remember and root for, but mordern slashers don't see that. See Terrifier, Red Eye (2017), Laid to Rest, and all the Wrong Turn sequels after 2 and before the reboot for what I'm talking about. The only recentish slasher I know of that didn't have this issue is the Hatchet series but the last one was pretty lackluster. Terrifier 2 might also be attempting to fix this considering how the director has talked about the protag, but I won't hold my breath.

I hate villeneuve, so ymmv
Lynch's isn't exactly a faithful adaptation, and the lack of a director's cut gives it a weird cut (Lynch is a ultra-narcissist, and doesn't even want to remember he didn't have full control over the theatrical cut)
but it's still glorious, and is fucking gorgeous
villeneuve's, as always, is insipid

AKSHUALLY, they knew they were gonna do Freddy Vs Jason eventually, so they set the opening in the future so that it took place after the events of Freddy Vs Jason. Jason X was supposed to help remind people of Jason before FvJ

I strongly believe there are a multitude of things you could do ranging from shlocky to more grounded. I actually agree with you that Jason Goes to Hell was a neat idea poorly executed. If you took that concept and put it into a non-F13th movie you could do something fun. A body swapping slasher villain sounds terrific, honestly, provided you establish some clear rules.

And by the way, you should watch Alien as soon as possible my friend.

>>if you have a problem with it go talk to the producers, you know the guys that can literally end your career if you piss them off
yeah but there's even like indie slashers where women get naked or go topless. I have no idea how they pull it off. I guess like, getting paid helps? Idk. I know if you put out a casting call you would probably add that the role requires nudity of some kind but just commanding a bitch to take her bra off on set? that's crazy. George Lucas was insane.
>>
>>157637958
It's money and pressure. People will do a lot to not rock the boat and if they sign on to do a film and know there is nudity they can't just back out. Film making takes a long time and is usually done on a tight schedule. If the actress gets cold feet and bitches for 45 minutes about not wanting to do the shower scene anymore then EVERYONE working on the film is going to be upset. Think about it, would you rather hang dong in a 4 minute scene or make all of your coworkers hate you?
There are some stories of directors or crew members trying to ease the discomfort, I remember Friday the 13th Part 4 originally only the girls were going to get naked in the skinny dipping scene but the male cast decided to also get naked to make the girls feel a bit more comfortable.
I don't remember who it was but I also recall hearing about a director directing a nude scene naked himself because the girl felt uncomfortable.

There was Freaky last year from the Happy Death Day guys. Haven't seen it though. Probably more of a comedy.

>I strongly believe there are a multitude of things you could do ranging from shlocky to more grounded.
I'm curious, but I wouldn't want to pester you or steal your ideas. I've been wanting to make a slasher since 2018 but I'm still not sure how to actually make my idea work, or if it's even possible. I suppose it's a bit more on the shlockier side.

Terrifier was also filmed with what seemed to be a cell phone so it didn't even look like an actual movie, just some shit you'd find on youtube.
A movie can have shit effects, shit acting, shit sets, but still look like a movie if it's shot on film. The digital shit they use now in low-budget productions ruins whatever they're going for.

I don't know that I'd say I have any great ideas myself but I like to acknowledge ideas I think are good. I think the body swapping idea is good (might have to look into Freaky, though what I'd really like to see is a "soul" jumping from person to person to achieve its aims). I think ripping ideas from folklore and myth is a good idea (watched Ravenous recently and it made me think of that). I even think super shlocky stuff like that F13th: Jason and the Argonauts idea that floats around here is great too. There's all sorts of stuff to be tried as long as you're willing to throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks. I don't what idea you have in mind, but I wouldn't know what to tell you anyway cus I don't have any film experience myself, but 3 years isn't such a long time. It'll probably just take a little more brainstorming to see what'll work.

>>157638136
That could be true too. Women are scary like that. I mean, depending on what they're like and the level of production a girl could just show up to a shoot one day with no bra. Do you think Wes Craven really stood there and told Rose McGowan to take her bra off?
>The day before filming began, McGowan put herself in charge of her character’s wardrobe
>McGowan jumped into a cab to pick out Tatum’s wardrobe at the local mall, purchasing “quadruple of everything”: cloud pajamas, a lime-green turtleneck sweater, two patterned skirts, and a “10” T-shirt.
>“I would never in my life wear a ‘10’ shirt,” McGowan chuckles. ”I would never want someone reading my breasts if I could avoid it. But Tatum would definitely wear one.
>They shot the death scene more than 20 times from every angle, in what McGowan describes as freezing cold temperatures.
>“Nobody told me about the nipple situation,” she laughs. “I wasn't powerful enough to warrant seeing the dailies, so I never knew. But for years people would come up to me or write online to say I wore prosthetics, and I'm like, ‘Why?’”
Well I guess that answers that

Not familiar, what is that?
>I don't what idea you have in mind,
>3 years isn't such a long time. It'll probably just take a little more brainstorming to see what'll work.
Well, my idea initially was for a slasher film where the killer only murders women with big asses because it reminds him of the woman he was in love with. But the idea is extremely flimsy. There's nothing to actually connect the would-be victims. No reason why a group of girls with big asses would all be together in one place. And that's not even getting into all the other slasher issues I'd have to work out in general. I begun to have some ideas about how I could rework it but I got sad and forgot.
>>
>>157638916

That's just off the top of my head

If it contained just one or 2 of these things, I wouldn't have as much of an issue with it. But you put it all together and it = Woke agenda

Yeah even back in 2018 that was the only thing I could come up with but I didn't want to go with something that stupid and gratuitous. But it would also be dumb for them to all just have big asses coincidentally. I kind of wanted it all to take place in a house.

>>157639060
That's not bad actually. But I wouldn't want my characters to be pornstars. It doesn't really work, but I really wanted to make a movie similar to House.

Literally just Jason fucking around in ancient Greece. The title obviously referring specifically to "Jason and the Argonauts" but the idea as I understand it just involving Jason fucking around in Ancient Greece with some Greek Myth spread throughout. I think it's a great idea.

That actually does sound pretty fun. I just wonder how far people would want to see Jason taken away from Camp Crystal Lake. It's been done before and Jason X has a lot of fans but I wonder how many fans would really want to see something like that be done again.
>The fat ass connoisseurs on /hor/ can help you brainstorm ideas. It's definitely workable. Dare I say it's kino.
Thank you. I've posted about it before, I'm just not sure how to go about it or what to do with it. I was originally taking a lot of inspiration from House, Possibly in Michigan, the story of Orpheus, and Kafka's Metamorphosis. I was putting most of the focus on the killer but I realized that giving him such a pathetic backstory would make him absolutely not scary. I mean, now that I think about it, the horror would've been ruined anyway because the idea was that one of the victims would be the doppelganger of the woman he was in love with. And seeing that again he'd begin to regain his humanity and try to romance her. You know, I think I realize now that I was trying to make two different films at the same time. One a slasher and one a Phantom of the Opera King Kong sort of thing. I'm stupid.
