Man, I wish Chevy had been a guest on the earlier format so it was a bit looser, but it was still a pretty good exchange.

I don't know, but I've heard that he's pretty close to well-known Holocaust denier Adam Eget.

What got you all into Norm? The very first thing?

For me it was this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gl6R5ROEaDY

Saw this around 2014 having never really heard of him, and went down the rabbit hole watching a lot of his other stuff, Dirty Work, stand-up, the YouTube shows mostly. SNL is a bit too American for my taste. Without hyberbole, the funniest man that ever lived, ever. People will say Robin Williams or something but, nah, it was Norm.
>>
>>156324913

I was a big Conan fan during the peak of his Late Night show and I became a Norm fan when I rewatched his old Conan interviews on Youtube around 2009 and then I became a massive fan when NML starting airing.
>>
>>156325235
His cameo in The Animal. I remembered him from Billy Madison. Realized he was hilarious.
>>
>>156325235
I think I encountered this same video, or at least the same event around the same time and it kickstarted me looking for more. It was on /tv/ too
I know I had seen him on Conan prior but it didn't click, and I probably saw him on highlight reels of SNL as well
>>
>>156318215
I think Artie Lang knew. On Joe Rogan he mentioned that Norm needed to take better care of himself. I thought that was an odd comment coming from Artie Lang of all people, now it makes sense.

>I was absolutely shocked and saddened to hear of Norm MacDonald's passing this morning. He was, without a doubt, one-of-a- kind. So clever, daring, well-read and smart as a whip. His comedy was brilliant, irreverent and at times biting. We all loved him on SNL's Weekend Update and I don't actually think he ever got credit for coining the phrase, 'Fake News.' Norm and I often toured doing stand-up and occasionally golfed together. A few years ago we took a road trip to Palm Springs and he insisted on blasting Johnny Cash tunes the entire way, windows down with his bare foot dangling out. Luckily I was driving. Thank you for your unique brilliance and charm, Norm. I miss you already.

;_;
>>

>>156325235
Saw a webm on 4chan of his opening remarks with Adam Eget about 4/20, where Adam keeps trying to talk about weed and Norm's reading Hitler's wikipedia page. Never had heard of him or seen a single thing he had ever done. That was probably 4 or 5 years ago, and almost immediately I watched every episode of NML. That was all I knew him for for a good year or so. Then INN and others started cropping up posting clips and now I've seen everything he's ever done and his comedy has permanently affected the way I talk and interact with others, to my enormous, immeasurable benefit. Without the influence of Norm I would likely have no friends and would have driven off a bridge many years ago. I owe him everything. Telling my friends (who had never heard of him) Norm jokes, trying to match the delivery verbatim, helped me break out of my autism/social anxiety. It helped me become a real person. It earned me friends, real deep connections and relationships that without I would be truly lost. I never met him. I never had a chance. But he was my hero. And I loved him.
>>
>>156325235
Probably that well known "you'd think it would take the world like 5 seconds to win, but no, it was actually close" world war joke. Fucking amazing.

Kind of similar to me haha, I've completely integrated/stolen his HAH? into my regular speech. Even if no-one else gets it it always just cracks me up to think of him saying it when I do it. The dumb character he plays that it's a hallmark of, and also sort of how rude a noise it is, but because it's made in dumb innocence, it's excusable, idk, so much funny shit encapsulated in one little noise. Shouldn't try too hard to analyse it I guess, just, holy fuck was he funny.

Whenever I had insomnia I would put on norm's podcast or stand up. With almost anything else my mind would wander and start thinking about my lack of sleep making it worse, but norm was always so funny that I couldn't focus on anything else but laughing and I could eventually fall asleep.

The man literally made me laugh myself to sleep.
>>
As a meme, of course he will get a sticky.
But that's what he was.
He was never funny.
Some idiot was claiming last thread that he was sacked by a producer of SNL because he was making jokes about OJ not being innocent, as if nobody else was making those jokes and Norm was "giving it to the man, being against the grain".
There was a larger issue at that time, which the trial brought up: innocent black people going to jail and guilty whites not going (cue the racist, high intellect norm fans coming at me like hyenas) and OJ was the news story that made that felt. Norm was white, making jokes about OJ being guilty, because he had no sense of his historical surroundings, he had no sense of humour. He was fired because he was dead weight to an already unfunny show, he was an idiot.
The only reason he is placated is because american racists and their euro bootlickers project those exact same values at his "fame". It's because they feel vindicated and placated themselves that this guy was a celebrity.

I saw Norm MacDonald at a drugstore in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “HAH? HAH? HAH?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen bottles of Xanax in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the pill bottles and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

thank you so much. I'm very proud of the book and am presently working on my second.

https://twitter.com/normmacdonald/status/1376108930254839809

I thought I saw another tweet by him saying it was finished or almost finished, but this is the last thing he said about it. If he got worse in the past month, that leaves about 4 months since he tweeted that. I dont know if thats enough, sadly

haven't gone to sleep yet, been drinking since last night. Not sure when I'll stop, honestly. Gotta say though, it's been happier than sad. There is so much stuff to remember and reminisce over, and I guess it's easier to skip the sad because it's over phase and go straight to the happy because it happened one when you've only ever known someone from afar. My only regret is never meeting the guy, seemed like an upright sort of fellow. Had I played my cards right, maybe I'd have a picture with him now, and a story about how he grabbed my ass I could tell randos on twitter. Too late, I guess
>>
I always hoped Norm would make it to old man age. He could have been like rodney. I miss him, no other comedian left now who says whatever he wanted. This sucks.

It's a bit of both. Adam runs a massive comedy club and basically keeps one of the main arteries of what's left of the American comedian scene running. Even if he's not naturally funny, he knows a joke and he's likely set up a bunch of punchlines himself because he knew it'd work but knew to leave it to the actually funny guy to spearhead everything.

Agreed. Most comedians, Norm included, seem to agree that clean comedy is harder to master. I guess he also liked it because, to quote the guy:
>It's one thing to make people laugh, it's another to make people smile
One thing that's surprising, because you'd think someone that likes literature so much would be all about the text as far as comedy is concerned, is how much importance Norm gives to execution. You can see it in his stuff. He seems to really like the storyteller aspect to stand-up comedy. I suspect that the reason he enjoys long winded "time wasting" jokes is that he likes the art of making people hang on to your every word, how to add color through small inflections and turns of phrases, how to command's people attention. For me what's enjoyable about the moth joke isn't the punchline, it's the getting there. I guess maybe that's what he got from all that book reading. It's not the story itself, it's the telling. Or maybe he got it from his father, who knows. Whenever he praises other comedians too, it's always about execution.

Norm really respected comedy, and worked on making actual jokes.

>I can look at other art forms and see how postmodernism has destroyed them, and now threatens to destroy stand-up. It’s the height of narcissism to write meta-comedy, because people aren’t interested in comedy. They’re interested in going home after shoveling shit all day and then seeing some fool perform. That’s not to say that comedy can’t make a greater point, because it can. But it can’t make a greater point by screeching to a stop in the middle of the comedy show, making a point, and then going back to the jokes. You’ve got to craft the point into the joke. I always bristle when people say, “The comedian is the modern-day philosopher.” There are modern-day philosophers.

>>156332267
Of course and if you watch his specials they are rife with hilarious, carefully crafted jokes. Even his talk show appearances. My point was (or is now at least) that he understood the value of comedy outside of stories and the value of stories outside of jokes. His "wasting time" material is more punched up than most other standups "netflifx special grade" material. Again, moth joke on Conan:
>my driver told me
*laugh*
>that's how I get all my material
*laugh*
>why don't we just have him on then
>nah that guy....wait till you see me do it
*laugh*
Is the last one a joke or is it just him making the point that execution matters? Both.

And we're not even in the story yet. And once he starts telling the story, if there's no laugh there's the fascination with how he tells it, it's a tale. What I'm trying to say is that a lot of comics rely on setup punch setup punch setup punch but Norm could read Beowulf or tell jokes and he'd have my attention just the same. He's mastered jokes but more importantly he's mastered captivating an audience, and a lot of the humor comes from how he tells it rather than what story he tells

Obviously I have no idea if this is who he was, but I bet this was Norm. RIP buddy. I never knew you but I loved you.

Slighty off topic, but anyone listen to Last Podcast on the Left?

I expect them to do a Norm tribute episode, since they are obviously inspired by his comedy.

He made enough jokes about it, and I suspect at least some of those jokes were base in fact.
I didn't intent it as an insult, coke is fucking awesome.

I have a pleb-tier story, but I won't lie because I'm certain it's exactly the same story as some other people's around my age. I always knew his name and recognized his voice from his voice work as Death in Family Guy and Norm the Genie of Fairly Oddparents. The first time I actually saw him was on the roast of Bob Saget, but I was only 14 at the time so I didn't quite get his anti-humor if I recall correctly. What finally got me watching his clips on YouTube was Steven Crowder talking about him as a comedian who doesn't hold back, and that was the first time I found out about his edgy material. That must have been around 2018 or so, but ever since then I've watched pretty much every clip and compilation of his stand-up, talk show appearances, and podcast.

iirc for the roast they told him to "be shocking", and he figured that in the context of lewd and savage jokes, the most shocking thing would be someone telling old dad jokes

How do I stop being depressed? I feel like a worrywart for no fucking reason, it's genuinely all in my head and I feel like I'm going insane. Work seems to be the worst trigger. I roll out of bed and instantly negative thoughts about what I'm doing, where I'm going, and how gruelling this day will be and how I'll do it over and over again. I don't even dislike my job, but I have these swings and lows where I'm consistently assaulted by suicidal thoughts brought about by just existing. I basically exist like everyone else except almost 24/7 I have a voice telling me to just end it, I honestly think I might be schizo.

You need to build a comfy fire in a fire pit in your backyard. Your primitive side needs an outlet. Remember that your ancestors were killing and maiming as a way of life.

P.S. Make sure you use gloves if you're clumsy and don't use gasoline or lighter fluid and have a hose at the ready, then when you're done, remember to douse and then stir with a stick.

>He’d been in the joint so long, he was downright institutionalized. He confessed that he was afraid of freedom. I couldn’t understand where he was coming from. I missed my freedom more than anything. I loved my freedom. And here in the hoosegow, they were pretty stingy when it came to any freedom whatsoever.
>Then Rocco explained the difference between the outside and the inside to me. On the outside, a man rises to power using his ambition and cunning. On the inside, you make your way up the ropes one way and one way only: by the number of fellows you can rape.
>That’s why, within the jail, Rocco’s name was spoken in hushed tones. He was a raper’s raper. He was staying right here in prison, he told me, because inside he had the necessary skills to command respect and prestige, but outside he was a nobody. I was no longer his lawyer, just another prisoner, and if I knew what was good for me I’d better start raping.
>Now, I’d never raped anybody before, and in the free world I had worn that fact as a badge of honor, mentioning it proudly and loudly at dinner parties and social events. Folks admired me for it. “Say what you will about old Norm,” my friends would often say, “but he won’t rape you!” Every time I heard that, it’d make me feel good inside, like a warm shot of whiskey. But here in the penitentiary, the rules had been turned upside down.
>I wanted to fit in, but the problem was that I didn’t care much for sex with men. I liked men fine when it came to watching football games with them, and eating Cheetos, and playing videogames, but when it came to having sex with them, I’d just had to grin and bear it.

Did you Norm cried when he found out he had cancer or when he was close to the end? Did he maybe regret not telling anyone so he had no one to share his feelings with someone? To me it seems like he died so alone and unloved. Someone in his family at least knew right?

Ticking away, the moments that make up a dull day.

Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown.

Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

...you are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
