It’s got the best lightsaber fight in all of Star Wars. Darth Maul, a now iconic villain who unfortunately wasn’t used much. The pod race sequence. Darth Sidious. R2D2. The senate chamber. The Jedi council. It’s political plot isn’t really that political and most viewers didn’t even process what was going on, but the plot is quite good at explaining how things wind up in motion leading to the empire. It’s a great film

the prequels were made for actual star wars fans. the people that read books, played the games, actually immersed themselves in the universe. it was a godsend. All the different worlds, aliens, seeing a world with the jedi and not just luke and vader, world building, politics, scheming went over normies heads.

thats why normies loved the Force Awakens which was just new hope with muh diversity
>>
>>112999347
I think the first one was really well executed, well edited, looked great, lot of real cool tracking shots that I enjoy, super well-directed instances of dialogue-in-action and mise en scene that I liked.

TLJ was fascinating from a meta critical type of look at how this trilogy wraps up the previous two. The first movie kind of did a lot of things right to emulate the adventure and aesthetics of the first trilogy. Then TLJ was full of baffling self-sabotaging subversive bullshit that kind of reminded me of the PT. Like I kind of want to rewatch it and take notes, it seems so fucky it may warrant studying.

Like the people that HAVE to hate the Nu Star War movies are the ones still dealing with the eternal adolescence shit. All the criticisms about TFA on here, compared to all the shit talking that was going on on imdb at the time. Like there was a concerted effort among the fans to figure out what the fuck happened. Those movie can be pretty objectively seen to be real bad fucking movies, by all technical, editing, cgi, actor direction, lighting, the script, whatever. It's all historically real bad, by all production and film history standards.

Like the PTS are generally really incompetently and lazily executed shit that is so bad it's funny, and a few genuinely cool things that keep normals and kids happy. But it's generally bad with a few notable good things.
The ST is generally good with a few notable "bad" things by this boards meme standards.

AT my essence I'm an OT fag, and the ST feels like a much more natural and less autistic and more sincere attempt to make a series of movies that follow the aesthetics and tone of the shit was appealing to people in the first place.

George was a hack making an industry facing commercial for ILM, because he saw CGI as the future and wanted to beat Cameron. He didn't give a SHIT about making a Star Wars movie. He wanted to secure his place as a powerhouse in the emerging industry going.

I think this scene is symbolic of Phantom Menace

The cinematography, score, scenery, etc is all great. The tension of this scene is amazing and Maul's saber reveal is iconic.

However, there's utterly awful dialog and acting from everyone but Ewan
>>
Rian couldn't think of a fun adventure for Finn and Poe, created Rose and Holdo, and assassinated Luke's character. Plus a boring space chase that could have been ended by the bad guys in minutes. Also the longest runtime of a Star Wars film. For a lot of nothing.

Imagine what he will come up with for his own trilogy.

This post right here is the epitome of "muh progressive agenda means i smart"

The politics demonstrated the inherent flaws of democracy, the failure of moral high-ground. In fact, the prequels and even sequels demonstrate the strength of dictatorship. Every democracy is crushed due to their inability to have a large standing army, much like America's current army. Prequels and the current sequels show this, with a new force crushing the democracy who prized high ideals and didn't want a standing military. This made them weak, pathetic, and deserving of defeat.

Star Wars is a conservatives wet dream, praising the "big-stick" policies of Teddy to the extreme.

I hate this "imagine someone" and "anyone who" no true scotsman horseshit. Learn how to banter without actively being a nigger and lashing out and making personal attacks. You immediately prove that Prequel fags are degenerate losers with no argument.

any back to the point. The ST looks like the same world, 30 years later. TFA used more dynamic camera moves and better lighting and it was much faster edited, but it still had the practical, gritty, cramped quarters vibe of the original. It doesn't stick out like the autistic cartoony cgi bullshit from the prequels.
>muh aesthetics
yeah MUH AESTHETICS I have fucking years of experience doing art department, construction, set dressing, and art direction. It's a critical aspect of filmmaking. If you fuck it up, you fuck up the movie.
>Well if you're going to copy all the iconography
It's not about "copy all the iconography" it's USE A FUCKING DOLLY SOMETIME. SHOOT ON LOCATION. STOP SITTING AT SKYWALKER RANCH SHOOTING WALK AND TALKS IN BORING CARTOON HALLWAYS. You need your movie to look like a fucking movie. Not a CGI reel.
>out of of creative cowardice and lack of
It isn't creatively bold to just sit on your ass in a sound stage and shoot everyone on green screens and not even bother getting a clean take. His movie isn't "bold or creative" because it looks like shitty boring cartoon with no creative direction other than "do whatever might pander to the academy."
>The ST are soulless movie

>competently made.

and the best part of all that shit is they spent like $100,000 or something on that suit, and then it was basically useless. It didn't help the VFX team at all so basically the actor actually being on stage dressed like a retard was just because nobody wanted to tell George.

Get a grip.

> The ST looks like the same world, 30 years later
It looks like the same world frozen in time for 30 years. No sense of technological or aesthetic progression. Everything is kept in stasis to tickle the nipples of the fanboys.

TFA used more dynamic camera moves and better lighting and it was much faster edited
Please be more vague. Both the OT and the PT were made with a classical sensibility. The camera is mostly static (not much call for dollys), the compositions simple and unostentatious, the editing mannered and deliberate and the framing wide. The ST abandons this sensibility entirely conforming to modern standards of filmmaking and completely missing the point of what Star Wars was meant to be which was primarily a revival and hearkening back to old stories and forms, retold with modern technology. The source material of the Lucas trilogies were Arthurian myth, Shakespeare, the works of Rembrandt, the films of John Ford, Kurosawa and Murnau. The source material for ST is the Star Wars that came before. Uninspired. Narrow. Soulless.

>muh CGI, muh grit
The PT uses a ton of practical effects and the ST uses a ton of CG so this is a bit of braying in the wind about nothing. Lucas' biggest mistake was experimenting with entirely CG environments when the technology wasn't quite there yet but he led the way in what would become an industry standard. This mistake does lead to a disconnect between the characters and environment but I'm able to overlook that in the same way I'm able to overlook the rear projection in Hitchcock films.

> I have fucking years of experience doing blah
And look how little knowledge you have to show for it.

>ALL THAT FUCKING MATTERS
middlebrow philistinism personified.

Same nervous atmosphere? Here you have someone clearly disagreeing with Rian, so convinced that it was stupid he can't help but wash his hands from it in the doc. The prequel BTS were more genuine and the nervosity looked more about the fact they wanted to do something that lives up to the original
>>

I wouldn't go that far. I think it's the best prequel, though. I like Qui-Gon a lot.

Panaka is also in the movie. Jar Jar is meant to be flexible and goofy, long limbed blacks fit the job.

There are two moments in TPM alone that elevate it above the dumpster fire of the recent movies. The Podrace and the Duel of the Fates. Nothing in Disney Wars even comes close.

The Phantom Menace is easily my favorite Star Wars movie. It's so carefree. The other ones just get so bogged down by their own bullshit, but the Phantom Menace is just pure adventure. I was also an adult when it came out (and hated it then but love it now).

This has to be b8. I remember telling my friends back when I saw TPM on the big screen back in 1999 that it felt more like a fucking Disney movie than a legit Star Wars movie. The only scene that kept it from feeling that way was Darth Maul getting sliced in half, but the rest of it reminded me of some old Disney fluff shit like The Gnome Mobile, Robin Hood or some shit.
>>
>>112995158

Honestly? Watching it as a kid it was my favourite
>>
>>112995602
What makes Darth Maul an iconic villain? He has no personality, he's basically a walking lightsaber.

I guess he's more intimidating than Grievous, who's four walking lightsabers.

Doesn't matter, all movie swordfights are like that. It's still stage combat and it will always be stage combat. Nobody wanted the stuntman to smack Mark Hamill over the head with a aluminum rod and crack his skull.
>>

>>
>>113005401
This.

Stage combat is a dance and should be treated as such. As long as it feels real and dramatic in the moment that's all that matters. Slowing it down and analyzing the slightest lapses in choreography is not only massively autistic but completely missing the point. It's like pausing the movie and zooming 100x into a CGI model and saying "see how fake it looks!

This is a fundamental flawed argument if your main point is that "You think that the best ever was what came out when you were 12", its a false equivalency.
There most likely is merit claiming that people are fond for the media they consumed when they were young, but that what was consumed was not necessarily what was new or in at the time.

Fuck off retards. Disney movies are also trash. Doesn't mean you retarded contrarian apes must now love PT. Lucas fucked up just as much as Disney did. Midichlorians, 20 million Boba Fetts, Jedi Order being a bunch of retards, C3PO being made by Anakin, pointless special edition changes just to spite the fans, destroying origins tapes.

PT feels like a Venezuelan TV drama with 100 million $ CGI.

Someone should tell them/donate and ask for them to do The Phantom Menace in 4K so 4K99 since it's the only prequel shot on film stock and can be in 4K. It would look better than the bluray which looks pretty good
