1. High Life2. An Elephant Sitting Still3. First Reformed4. Climax5. Under the Silver LakeShit year desu
>>106860971First Reformed is 2017 is it not? How is High Life compared to her other stuff?Where can I watch Climax and Elephant Sitting Still?
>>106860971Where did you watch An Elephant Sitting Still and Climax?
>>106860190what's good about Whitetail Deer Hunter? was curious about it, but never bothered.
>>106860993I've seen people post Elephant Sitting Still on YouTube, but only with Chinese subtitles.
>>106861055there's nothing too special about it: the movie is just a nice, sincere story about father/son bonding in the outdoors.
>>106860993First Reformed only released in Venice in 2017. It's still running for awards this year so I count itHigh Life is fantastic. Style is similar to good Denis movies (90s early 2000s)Climax is out in some countries (in my Yuropoor country)Elephant sitting still = Film festivals or shitty quality online
>>106861105hm I guess you weren't a fan of White Material.
>>106860190>Under the Silver Lakewhy would you like a third-rate Inherent Vice rip-off?
>>106861105I'm so hyped for Climax, but I have no idea when I'll be able to see it in Burgerland. I live in Detroit too, and we only have one hipster theater around here.
>>106861127It's good. I just prefer 1995-2005 Denis. Bastards and Let the Sunshine in were pretty mediocre so I'm glad she's back
>>106861171Let the Sunshine disappointing. yeah I'm glad you consider this a return to form.
>>106861134because it's really really funny
>>106860190Shoplifters was so comfy

>>106861857No one cares about your europoor movies.
>>106861957Yeah, it was painfully mediocre at best. The actors can't act (no surprise considering) and the film is thematically all over the place
>>106862002>the film is thematically all over the placeit really isn't lol it's a very singular theme about destiny. how could you not get that?
>>106862011This is like saying that Captain America Civil War wasn't thematically all over the place because it was about the singular theme of resisting totalitarianism.>tldr; you're an idiot

So this is the power of 4channel We can actually discuss true kino
this was a really bad year I think, haven't seen most of the 2018 movies as usual (waiting for bd releases)I guess for me right now it would be You Were Never Really HereFirst ReformedMission Impossible Fallout
>>106862972where’s dead souls anon?
>>1068601901. Isle Of Dogs2. Hereditary3. First Man4. Widows5. Shoplifters6. Suspiria7. Searching8. American Animals9. Anhhiliation10. MandyI haven't seen The Favourite, Climax, Burning, Cold War and Roma yet, but they'll probably end up on my list when I do
>>106861277Not to mention incredibly depressing
Didn't see the appeal of Burning at all. The film was painfully slow, 30 minutes too long, the only good character was korean Patrick Bateman and the film didn't build enough tension to make the conclusion feel satisfying. The fact that korean Zoey Deschannel annoyed the shit out of me didn't help. Some good dialogue and camera work, but that was it.
I don't have a list yet. Waiting for BDs to come out so I can pirate.
OverlordSoloBlacKKKlansmanSearchingAnnihilationFirst ManBad Times at the El RoyaleSicario 2Incredibles 2Eighth GradeHaven't really seen the Oscarbait this year, nothing jumps out as immediately interesting and Moviepass has fucked me over whenever I've thought about seeing one. Still planning on seeing Vice, The Mule, and the animated Spider-Man movie by year's end, and maybe The Front Runner. Probably wait until screener time to see anything else.
Under the Silver Lake was amazing, and I'd put Mandy up there too. Outside of that a very mediocre or forgettable year for film. Obviously I haven't seen everything yet, but what I did see I barely remember.
>>106865465Mandy is a steaming pile of shit. Watch more movies or don't post at all.
>>106865584Not that anon but "watch more movies" is a terrible braindead reply that won't fix anything. You can watch a large quantity of films and still be a complete casual with no taste because there's far more bad films out there than good ones.Imagine if someone had bad music taste and you said to him "listen to more music" like that would change anything, it's utterly dumb and ridiculous
>>106865465Mandy is a pile of dogshit compared to On the Silver Lake, which isn't a perfect movie by any means
>>106864704whats wrong with the op list?

>>106867386be completely honest: how many of his "bests" have you seen?
>>106867702thats a very nice way of putting it. I watched it last week and wasn't impressed. the entire gimmick of the film just isn't interesting enough and their acting is quite bad (expectantly)
>>106865584Mandy's cinematography alone puts above about 30 other movies I've seen this year.
>>106867729Unsane and Cold War.
>>106867821there is no gimmick of the movie. he just wanted to film the movie with the guys who did the heroic deed. that's not a "gimmick" it's a very good idea that comes from a place of honesty and respect.
>>106867832>cinematographyAh yes, the go-to argument when it comes to defending shitty movies
>>106868015can see your point but to me it felt like a gimmick the same way Linklater seeks out his movies
>>106868139>trashing Linklateroh you're just a shitting baby of a plebeian. go away now.
>>106868164never said Im trashing him. calm down.

>>106868512Released in 2018. Fucking Forest of the Lost Souls is on my list, and that's from 2016, but was only available to watch at select film festivals in fucking Portugal and small places in Europe until it his wide release this year. If you wanna get technical, so are Hereditary and First Reformed. Stop trying to take away Chaddington's glory.
So far...BlackkklansmanOh Lucy!Sicario 2KodachromeFirst ReformedJourney's EndAnnihilationOutlaw KingThoroughbredsThe After PartyI think I'm forgetting one or two. First Man was alright too but should've been better. Mandy is the only film I've seen that the phrase "all style no substance" actually applies to. The Terminal is the worst film I've seen this year and it's unbelievable how bad it is.Black Panther is probably the best capeshit film of the year. But it is still just capeshit.Cold War was a giant disappointment. It was enjoyable and well-made, but I get the impression the director didn't understand the story he was trying to tell and the film itself offers no exploration of the themes it presents. It's basically a documentary.Psyched for Burning, The House That Jack Built, Roma and Vox Lux./blogpost
>>106869109Shitcario Poo: Gay of Whorefaggo was shit
>>106869109Oh, nearly forgot, You Were Never Really Here has to be the biggest disappointment of the year by far. Like seriously, so much potential squandered for a mediocre art flick
>>106867832Mandy had only one good shot in the entire flick.
>>106869148>underage memer didn't like a film about America's foreign policy and the way bureaucracy impedes everythingWoah, what a total and complete surprise
>>106869225it completely changed direction and turned into a generic "daughter figure warms my heart" film after about thirty minutes.
>>106868296Does Sunset have torrents out?
>>106869308No. It really didn't. Did you actually watch it?Cause it sounds like you just watched the trailer.
>>106860190>3. 15:17 to Parissell me on this
>>106869376I actually watched it you retard. it's a jumbled mess that has no idea what it wants to be. begins with a jihadist crossing the Mexican border suicide bombing. other jihadists who snuck in blow themselves up in a Target. okay, fine. then they decide to engineer a false flag by faking a kidnapping of the cartel's daughter to pit them against each other. also fine. But then it gets retarded: Their plan afterwards was to drive Isabella Moner ALLLLLLL the way across the border into Mexican enemy territory to provoke a gang war, getting themselves shot to shit in the process, when they had two helicopters providing air support overhead. Why not just use the choppers to take her back in the first place?!
>>106869372no. I already watched it three times. Top 5 all time for me.
>>106869586You're so fucking stupid it's painful>why didn't they just let everyone know that they were undercover cia agents trying to destabilise the cartels?
>>106869720retard, a kidnapping across international borders is a FEDERAL ISSUE. the Federal government was a known quantity in the rescue operation. the only retard is you for putting this drooling retard trash anywhere near your top 10.
>>106869679Fuck me, I need it now.
>>106869775This has to be b8 right? I refuse to believe you're unironically this stupid
>>106869845what is your issue with what I'm saying? they were using humvees, tanks, and military grade equipment to take Moner back to her dad's house. why couldn't they A. use drones to scope out the RPGs or B. used a fucking helicopter to take her back to her house?
>>106869459It's watchable but still pretty bad overall. Clint Eastwood's direction elevates some parts of it (the train scene in particular) but mostly it's just aimless character building with wooden acting. A good portion of the film is just them doing regular backpacker stuff in Europe. At the end of the day these are fairly ordinary guys who were involved in singular act of great heroism. Nothing really happened in their lives up until that point (save for maybe some of Spencer's story) that warranted a full 70 minutes of screen time. The film would have been more powerful as a 30 minute short that only included Spencer's time in the military, a bit of backstory on the other guys, a few minutes of backpacking, the train scene and the aftermath.
>>106869897Because they're not taking her back to her dad's house? Again, did you even watch the fucking film? The point was to put her in the region controlled by her dad's enemies to ignite a cartel war.Again, how fucking stupid are you?
>>106869955holy shit you couldn't have misunderstood the point of the movie this hard unless you were actually retarded. like, you almost, ALMOST got it, but it completely fell over your head. ever stop to think that these three young men were PRECISELY ordinary people who didn't do anything really spectacular in their lives, but every single event and interaction they had was PUSHING THEM towards this great and heroic act? Do you not understand how destiny works? Fucking retard.
>>106869994>The point was to put her in the region controlled by her dad's enemies to ignite a cartel war.oh wow that's even more retarded than I realized lol. this movie is the worst kind of trash because it makes retards like you think it's clever. I bet you enjoyed Widows and thought that plot was "clever"
>>106870020Not him but defending a film with "but it all lead to DESTINY" is one of the worst defences I've ever read. Consider that your exact post could be used to defend Harry Potter only changing "3 young men" to "3 children"
>>106870020"Destiny" isn't fucking real and I don't need to over an hour of people doing mundane shit. >but every single event and interaction they had was PUSHING THEM towards this great and heroic act? That's not how life works. Do you also believe in zodiac signs and tarot cards?
>>106870083>Consider that your exact post could be used to defend Harry Potter only changing "3 young men" to "3 children"except it couldn't you fucking retard. god why are you all such fucking retards I swear to God you aren't watching film with your eyes open
>>106870093>"Destiny" isn't fucking real
>>106870077>can't follow the plot of a simple film>exposes himself for an idiot who can't follow a simple plot>this confirms to him that it must the film who's stupid>similarly, anyone who could follow the basic story must also be stupidThis is getting pathetic m8
>>106870130but the film is stupid. the police ended up double crossing them anyway. why not just drop her in enemy territory by helicopter?
>>106860190>muh pretentious indie films that play in select theaters
>>106870122>Life is just like muh /v/idya and capeshit! I'm on a magical quest!
>>106870181>I don't believe in fate
>>106870105>except it couldn't youExplain which part doesn't apply
>>106870212how about that the three characters in Harry Potter always did some big thing at the end, beginning, and middle of the books.
>>106870152Helicopters are smaller (less men to protect them if it goes shit up), much more expensive, and create an atmosphere of distrust. The mission was to make sure it looked like the US had done everything by the books and not raise any questions. Using a fucking helicopter to transport a child to the territory of a supposed ally gives off the opposite impression.Remember, they had a fucking police escort.
>>106870264It's not exactly the same though so you're wrong.
>>106870281why didn't they use the drones they had at the beginning of the movie to scope out a paved route for them, find out that there were guys with RPGs waiting to ambush them, and to execute the turncoat police officers as soon as they betrayed them?
>>106868419Not in the USA and we own your ass.
>>106870304oh so i coiuldn't use that same sentence but change it around for Harry Potter to make it work? QED bitch

>>106870474You can't even explain how you think the way I described 15:17 to Paris could apply to Harry Potter. it doesn't apply. it's not even close. you were retarded manchild-tier for bringing up that trash in the first place. I hope you sit on a nail and your mother dies.
Buster Scruggs was this year's kino
>>106870499It does apply though. Literally every single line you wrote, except the 2 words I changed.

>>106870609>a great movie
>>106870684the part where the main characters in 15:17 are ordinary people who don't do anything remarkable for their whole lives until fate and destiny put them in the position to do so. I really liked those so far from what I have watched this year.
>>106871052He does extraorindary things that are entirely ordinary. That's the point.By just acting good, he overcomes every obstacle despite being a shit wizard who's not particularly smart, strong or gifted
>>106870976It's his best movie yet. I like how it's simply a sincere quirky romcom, and not some self-important superficial imitation of a grand Hollywood drama of the past. PTA is still a boring geek, yet this time it actually works to his advantage and makes this overconstructed comedy a heartfelt and enjoyable one (the same way it worked in "Punch-Drunk Love"). DDL's is at his comic best here too, and the final 10 minutes of the movie reminded me of John Waters movies the most.
>>106870958Fascinating. How do you decide which to choose for CAD viewing? Is one better for certain types of file? Why not just use one for everything?
>>106870953Check out TPB. It was probably uploaded there by Schrader's intern/Schrader himself, as I can't imagine anyone else putting a director's statement inside a torrent in the form of an .rtf file.

>>106871282i don't have to try because the amazing film quite literally speaks for itself
>>106871252My HTC Vive is wireless so I use that for big machines or assembly line simulations and I use my oculus for small detailed parts so I can check for mistakes in places that can be a pain to inspect on a flat screen. 3D movies are great on the GO btw because it feels like treu 3D
>>106871350But it clearly doesn't?
>>106871027>>106871052In my opinion, "15:17 to Paris" is an amazing movie simply because it's a story about heroism free of any stale dramatic schemes related to such stories. The characters feel authentic and free precisely because for a large part of the film they aimlessly hang out. And at the end, when they actually do this brave thing, it's not because they were supposed to do it by the way this story was told, but because they actually do the right thing in the moment--it's beautiful. It's amazing how Eastwood has this grasp on the futuristic, post-ironic (as in devoid of dramatic irony) storytelling which represents the true nature of existentialism in a unique positivist way.

>>106871660So does its terrible acting, dialogue or empty feeling influence that decision at all?Of course, I've seen your list and your taste is fucking trash
i missed all the good shit but on the real the only good flicks I saw this year were Hereditary and You Were Never Really Here.
>>106872081It's actually well acted, well written, and a heartfelt film overall. And you are a boring delusional conformist who can't enjoy a beautiful film without peer approval.
>>106872081By the way, which exact picks made my list "trash"?
>>106870875Phantom Thread came out in 2017 and this has to be a troll post.Nigga I saw Support the Girls because Regina Hall makes my dick hard but that movie was shit, my dude.
>>106872178>It's actually well acted, well written,
>>106872261It didn't come out in 2017 in all parts of the world. In fact, it was only shown in a couple of theaters in the US starting on December 25 in order to run for the Oscars. Everywhere else, including 99% of US venues, it came out in 2018.So, you're a masturbator, not a movie lover? Why would you share that?
>>106870838yeh, its weird that nobody riped it to the usual torrenting sites whenever it hit tv
>>106870731It hits burger cinema in around a week or so if you want to see it on the big screen and are a burger.
>>106872457No, i'm saying the movie was absolute shit and to suggest that it was a contender for best of this year highlights you have shit taste.and my dude i saw phantom thread twice in 2017 in theaters. i live in baltimore. you're telling me baltimore has access to oscar films than "99% of the US"?i mean its cool 4chan hasnt changed but dont yall get tired of saying dumb shit under the guise of trolling? it's stupid. go outside.
>>106872457No one gives a shit when it came out in your shit-tier country. The thread is obviously about the films that were released publicly (outside of festivals) this year.
>>106872538no, im an argie cuck sadly
>>106872561Well, I can't look up the exact locations for Phantom Thread showings, but here is a message from Box Office Mojo dated January 7:>The second best per theater average for the weekend belongs to Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread, which brought in an estimated $245,000 from six locations for a $40,833 average. Next week, the film is looking to expand into approximately 50 theaters. It originally opened in four locations on Christmas Day, then on January 2 expanded to six locations, and was in 1,186 theaters at the widest release.>>106872589Then why have people posted the Cahiers du Cinema top ITT which actually features Phantom Thread too? Perhaps, this arbitrary anal bullshit is only obvious to you.
