I can book tickets (direct flight) to Cartagena or (layover in Trinidad, direct flight home) to Guyana, for roughly the same price. I was thinking I can always go to Colombian beaches later and nothing will change, but Guyana is probably about to get a lot more expensive. I will spend ten days, so if I go to Guyana I can visit Suriname and collect another passport stamp vs. Cartagena where ill probably only visit areas in that vicinity, like Barranquilla.

What would /trv/ choose and why? I also have two kids ages 2 and 5.

I've heard bad things about Guyana, especially for white people. Reportedly Guyana niggers speak some kind of pidgin English, but the country is very violent and insecure, and there is virtually nothing but jungle outside of the coastal strip. That being said, going to a place just for the hell of it is always a good reason to travel.
I didn't care for Cartagena, though it is well-developed by Colombian standards, and it is a great place to find (overpriced) beautiful whores and cocaine. The walled city is a tourist trap, and the hustlers can be very fucking annoying. Santa Marta is an appealing backpacker destination with a laid-back vibe, though some neighborhoods are reportedly dangerous. Lots of pretty dark girls there who have eyes for white guys. I only saw Barranquilla going to and from the bus station, but it looked like a bland working city baking under the hot tropical sun.

I haven't been to Guyana but I think you can see most of it in a day from what I've heard from people who have been there. It's 99% jungle then just one city. It's like a small Caribbean island culturally but has this huge unexplored area attached to it.
