Have a friend who lives in Madrid who confirms it is Madrid, Barcelona is a shithole and stuff gets stolen all the time and it might as well be a major american city with how some districts get dangerous at night

Obviously it’s the capital, but it’s focus doesn’t feel primarily touristic like Barcelona does. Still, Madrid is a great tourist destination nonetheless. Barcelona feels a lot more liberal, with more creative endeavours, edgy new bars, start-up cafes and a wilder nightlife. It really depends on what you’re looking for imo.

Just standing holding onto one of the poles on the train car, with my AirPods in listening to music, trying to avoid eye contact with people. This old Catalan manlet walked up to me and said something in his stupid Pig Latin. Since I clearly had earphones in and wasn't even looking at him, and since I don't speak his language, I had no idea he was trying to communicate with me. He seemed to want to take my place grabbing the bar (it was fairly crowded). He then fucking YELLED at me in front of everyone, whatever the fuck it was I couldn't tell you, since again it was in Catalan. I can't tell you how tempted I was to deck him that moment. But I'm not that foolish. I know how they are, and even though he was being belligerent, I wasn't willing to take the coin toss of seeing whether the police would have taken my side. A criminal charge in Spain would have meant endless complications in my life, being barred from Europe forever at the very least. So I gave him a look and moved to the other side of the train car. A reasonable person would have obviously tried to communicate in Spanish, or failing that, in English. I'm actually a huge Europhile who's fluent in Spanish and French, but Catalans have somehow managed to make me hate them with a passion. Nothing amuses me more than the thought that they voted for their independence, and Madrid straight up ignored the referendum. Viva Franco.

Don't go to BARFcelona at all in fact stay away from the whole eastern peninsula.If you're looking for quiet, safety, just shopping and sightseeing the more up north you are including Madrid the better. But if you just want the sluttiest girls in Spain who will fck your brains out both freebee and p4p go all the way south (Granada, Malaga, Cadiz, etc.).My expeience, take or leave.
