So, level with me here.

A while back, i reserved a hotel in Akihabara, very much across the station. Got a decent deal for the Washington, seems decent enough for a long stay.

From i've been getting by reading the last thread, the general vibe i've seen is that Akihabara sounds like a shadow of it's former self, due to a myriad of reasons, including the pandemic... but also the Yakuza?

I have the option and time to refund what i have paid for that place and change my home base for, maybe Ikebukuro? I've been eying up the APA's there for some time. I'm open for other ideas i might have not considered. Akihabara is worth a visit or two, but overnight seems like a harder sell?

I'll be going near the end of the year. Shy of November.

I don't have a baseline for how it was in the past, but Akiba was probably to best place I visited in Tokyo a couple of months ago, you can wander through the multilevel buildings looking at shit for days if you like cameras, anime, vintage electronics, etc. The only con is that there are tons of groups of foreign nerds, which kind of cheapens the atmosphere a bit. I saw nothing that looked overtly Yakuza, but in most of the other big districts like Shinjuku and Ikebukuro there are Japanese men that look like anime villains standing around at every intersection and corner who are obviously gangster types, often they latch on to passing women in an attempt to recruit them for sex shops I believe. I didn't see any of that in Akiba though because it's all geared towards maids already.

Yes, I did a month and a half from Tokyo down to Kyushu and flew back to Osaka. You don't need Shinkansen, but it can mean your travel times will often double or get pushed to the next day (especially with buses). However, you will end up using JR lines a lot when you travel between cities, but you can keep the daily cost below that of the passes if you are content to spend a few days in each location. When you are there and planning to go through big, popular cities you should definitely book accommodation a week in advance or more, because the weekends can double and triple prices in touristy places. If you wait too long, you will be left with undesirable, overpriced locations that lead to long commutes to do anything in area.

When you go into smaller towns the guest houses can be really good experiences, sometimes the owner and staff live there and there are mostly Japanese travelers coming through, and they tend to like having big dinners together and will probably invite you for food and drink at some point. In the cities I found the guest house option is more of a landlord who only communicates through email/Line, so hostels with a dedicated front desk are generally better for cities.

There were a few times I showed up early to a guest house intending to drop my bag off and there was no front desk, just a locked door to an apartment style arrangement, and the landlords are off living their daily lives uninterested in checking people in early or late without advance notice, which is hard to give when you're travelling long term without a concrete plan, and no access to the Japanese phone network.

I get sim cards everywhere I go, I don't know why anyone prefers pocket wifi when you can just pay for unlimited data and be done with it, not having to carry anything clunky that needs to be recharged. The sim cards available at the airport are a shitty deal though, you'll have to go from counter to counter reading the charts for pricing. Look into reserving one with Mobal or whoever else is offering that, you can arrange for pickup at the airport or some train stations in big cities, that company is the only one that offers talk and text I believe.

If you go with a sim card over a long trip though, you should make sure you get your replacement ready in advance, because they generally only sell 30 day cards, and if yours expires when you're in a city which isn't a main tourist destination you could end up having a hell of a time bouncing around the cell phone shops with no internet connection being told they don't sell sims to non-residents. I lucked out and found an electronics store that was selling a shitty 3GB tourist card, which I promptly replaced with another unlimited one once I was back in a more mainstream city.

Has anyone here gone with a friend that speaks no Japanese, how did it go? I'll be in Japan for a month with my friend, thing is he doesn't speak a lick of Japanese whereas I speak an ok amount (N2). I know that you can do fine in Japan with only English but my worries is that he'll want us to be joined at the hip throughout the whole trip due to our difference in Japanese. Shimonoseki is famous for fugu, I highly suggest going to the fish market and trying some freshly prepared fugu sashimi if you're there while it's in season (winter). Don't blame me if you die, though.

Kitakyushu is a fun and actually somewhat dangerous/seedy city, by Japanese standards anyway, and it's literally just on the other side of the strait from Shimonoseki so if you want to check out that side of Japan you can do that as well. I've had some really good Chinese food there, really really good.

Neither of those places are popular tourist destinations given that they're relatively close to a major city like Fukuoka so you shouldn't expect any trouble finding same day bookings for places to stay imo.

Air Canada isn't great, but compared to US airlines it's not bad. A plus is you can drink as much as you want - just keep asking for drinks every time the attendants walk past, and when they turn out the lights, you just walk up to the galley section for an open bar. I wish there was a simple way to search flights by airfare code as it would make finding perfect fuel dumps much easier than it is now, although $450 is about the lowest I can find now quickly between west coast US to Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka). Things will get good in August/September. There are some risky ones for $350 now with Canadian Air, but it's too high of a chance your itinerary will get cancelled because of the placement of the flights.

Most of the tourist cards should have a top up option, but you'll have to keep the packaging to remember what brand sim you got, any special code that's required, instructions to navigate to the site, etc. The extension options I saw were all shit designed to fleece and usually didn't offer unlimited data, which I need for peace of mind, so I prefer to just get a new sim.

Sometimes there are apps that require a phone number for SMS verification before you can make an account, I think Line did it for me but I had already set it up in another country and it didn't ask for a new one when I got to Japan. If you need any apps specifically for Japan like Bumble, Line, Tinder, food delivery, etc. I would set them up before you leave because I don't see how you can pass those types of things without a phone number once you get there. if you get the JR pass you're covered for the shinkansens so you'll be able to get to all the cities you're going to. It also covers the majority of train lines, including the Osaka loop line and the Yamanote line in Tokyo which is what you'll be using for 90% of your travel in those cities. There will however be some lines that are not Japan Railway run, which you will have to pay for, which includes subways. Considering you're only there a week, you'll be able to stick to mostly JR only and see a ton so I wouldn't worry about it, just bare in mind any trips outside of JR lines you'll have to pay a few hundred yen for.
