Bali and Paris. Absolutely disgusting shit holes with horrible locals. Both places stink. Both places food sucks.

Amsterdam

If you think London is less walkable than new York you're retarded.
Undoubtedly when you say New York what you mean is Manhattan which also makes you retarded. Good luck walking anywhere else.

>>2096282
If you're talking countries then Ecuador was a bit of a nothing burger compared to some of the other epic countries around it.
Niagara falls was pretty shit also, massively hyped up for what is a pretty small waterfall surrounded by shit tourist stuff and a few casinos.

NYC is the only place worth anything in the US.

For mine I think I could have a good time in Barcelona but the circumstance of the trip wasn’t enjoyable for variables that could be avoided or were just bad luck.
I’d go back if there weren’t many other places I’d want to visit first time or revisiting cities I liked.
Compared to any other city in Europe I’ve been, everywhere you go you get Interrupted by people on the street looking for rubes. But I think it was the scenario.

If you only visit Paris, perhaps.

>>
Paris.
Such a shame to see a beautiful city ruined by the mere existence of all that fucking scum
>>
Unironically the UK. It's a dour, depressing place, the English are completely joyless. The weather is shit. The food was overpriced for what you get. Traditional English food is bland and overcooked so everyone eats Indian and Chinese food which was among the few redeeming things. The "incredible" public transit turned out to be unreliable. Like another anon said you don't feel like you're getting what you pay for. My first experience with the UK was a soda machine that ate $2 of my money.

Unironically I really enjoyed France and have gone back. The people were nice if you tried to approach them on their terms and make small talk. They seem happy. The cities were interesting. The weather is was unexpectedly mild. My first experience in France was getting off the Chunnel train where a nice lady selling crepes from a street cart poured like 5 shots of Grand Marnier on my crepe. In the US I wasn't old enough to drink at the time. I loved it.

Yeah, going from NYC where bars/clubs serve until 4 am and there are late night trains, London is a joke...like pubs close at 11p.m. what the fuck? I don't even go out before midnight at home. As everyone also mentions, the price. If London was half the price it would be better, but for what you pay it's fucking garbage.
>>
>>2096494

23:00 closing time??? not sure how that even works. no one goes out before 22:00 in the US. wtf? get to a bar or club before 22:00 usually for hardcore alcoholics in the US

We have nightubes at weekends now. I'd agree that it's a bit shit it's taken so long but they're slowly getting there, the reason it's taken so long is the train drivers union but that's another conversation for another day.
By any metric of measurement London is not a shit city though
>>
>>2096491
London is like any city that has residents that will unconditionally defend it, it sucks. Whenever residents try to dodge criticism about their city just stay away from it.

It is for nightlife.

Angkor Wat, left after 5 minutes. Cambodia in general is just a fucking shithole. Unless you wanna fuck children there is no reason to ever set foot in that dump. Saw like 5 western pedophiles while there aswell

Barcelona. You're fucking crazy. The nightlife is amazing. The food is fucking incredible. The women are insanely hot. The museums are world class. The city itself is gorgeous. If you hate Barcelona, you hate being alive.

Let's be honest, you lost 2 dollars in the vending machine on a can of coke because you're a fat American mutt and you've decided the cry about it and blame London lel.

>>2096644
I can see why people think it. Barcelona is one of my favourite cities in the world but you've got to KNOW where is good, otherwise you can have a pretty shit experience.

Restaurants for example, plenty of them in the main tourist areas are literally scams, as in they'll microwave frozen pizzas and sell them to you for a ridiculous mark-up. You think these places would be ok because they're right in the centre but they're not.

Then the Michelin starred places are hidden and much more discreet.
>>
>>2096649
>Restaurants for example, plenty of them in the main tourist areas are literally scams, as in they'll microwave frozen pizzas and sell them to you for a ridiculous mark-up. You think these places would be ok because they're right in the centre but they're not.

Yeah I can confirm when I was there I expected amazing food and got... Some mediocre stuff for way too much euros. I just walked into a restaurant close to the office I was staying at for work.

Never explored the city proper - maybe next time when I am there I will find the time to give it justice. How to find out about proper places to eat?
>>
>>2096670
>Some mediocre stuff for way too much euros

This is really common, the best rule of thumb is just to stay away from anywhere in the main central tourist locations because they literally are scams. You can google "Restaurant scam Barcelona" and they'll tell you all about it.

The first time I visited I had the same issue, turned up, didn't really explore, went somewhere that looked good and realised how shitty it was.

The best thing you can do is just do your research on well reviewed places in the city, usual travel websites or ones dedicated to the city, or go slightly out into the less tourist centric areas and see what looks popular with locals.

You're not breaking any mold, if you scroll up you'll find 5 people already talking about London.

London has a wealth of history, architecture and unique cultural institutions but you need to understand London was the original New York and it's only natural that the bigger, brighter, newer city is going to edge out and be considered better.

NY weather in winter is far harsher than London's winter weather. Not to mention accents and entitled brown people? You can't go 5 minutes walking down any prime tourist area in New York without some jogger speaking ebonics trying to get you to take his mixtape lmao.

NY is better than London I agree with you but if you consider it the "most disappointing place you've visited" it's obvious you haven't travelled much

Athens, hands down.

Athens was the second city I visited outside the United States, ever. I was 19 years old and had this whole plan plotted out: I was going to spend three or four days in Istanbul, take the bus to Athens, fly to Egypt, spend a couple weeks there, carry over to Jordan, hit up Dubai, and then do a month in India. I'd done basically no research before leaving and didn't know anything about either Istanbul or Athens. Since I was very unfamiliar with Turkey, I expected Istanbul to be a bit bland, while somehow believing that Athens would be some charming center of European culture.

I wound up loving Istanbul and disliking Athens, which is a generally grimy, dirty city with little aesthetic appeal outside its most touristic quarters. I intentionally missed my flight to Cairo, took another bus back to Istanbul, and spent another few weeks traveling Turkey before going to Iraq, Georgia, Armenia, and then Dubai and India.

That was almost a decade ago, and I've traveled lots since then. There are places I've no burning desire to go back to--like San Pedro Sula, or Dar Es Salaam--but none left quite the impression as Athens. I think it's just because it was babby's first trip, and I got some Paris Syndrome or whatever it's called.
>>
>>2096917
I have literally traveled to over 500 cities all over the world and you're wrong. To think there's anything special about upstate New York, ugh. I wish I could gouge your eyes out, you clearly don't deserve them.
>>
>>2096921

Good thing you skipped Jordan too, total shithole. Amman is literally the Athens of the Middle-East.
>>
>>2096912
>national parking lots
>>
>>2096921
I said upstate is better than NYC, not the best in the world. Also, nobody cares how many places you've seen, that doesn't invalidate other opinions
>>
>>2096928
It's not. Only reason why anyone would think upstate NY has anything on NYC itself is if they have never left the eastern seabord in their lives.
>>
>>2096872

I know that feel, been there on a business trip and wanted to see some districts for myself after work. Ashbury Heights, completely gentrified and unaffordable, GG with barriers on ground level to prevent people jumping into SF bay. Insane traffic on the highway into Silicon Valley. A nice area was the Santa Cruz Mountains, but the city and immediate surroundings were terrifying.
>>
>>2096482
It's called exaggeration anon. Not "misuse" of a word.
>>
>>2096930
you clearly are retarded then. I prefer nature, so I think upstate is better. Why would traveling make me invert my opinions are start liking the city more? It wouldn't, which is why I still prefer upstate despite living on both seaboards, 8 different states, and visiting 30 countries

London and Paris were expected to only be good for visiting museums, so it's not really disappointing (kinda like visiting Berlin, you know it's a shithole so no disappointment possible).
Of the capitals in Europe only Rome comes to mind as really worth a visit for seeing the city.

In japan I'd recommend only taking Shinkansen if you need to be quick, the windows are tiny, you can hardly see anything of what's outside, unlike e.g. a german ICE where you see what place you are traveling through.

Italy as a whole. Granted I didn't go every in the country, just Milan, Rome, Florence, and Trento. It was just a shithole, food was good but that was really the only positive about the place. It was dirty, unorganized, and full of just vapid people.

I remember taking the train from zurich to Milan and knowing the exact moment I crossed the border into Italy. Houses were decrepit, yard unkempt, infrastructure on general was terrible. Granted, going from 3 weeks in Zurich with a friend to solo hostel hopping in Italy is jarring in nature but fuck, Italy is a shithole.

im too retarded to explain it well but, a pub is like a traditional community rendezvous point where everyone locally goes to have some drinks and chit chat with their friends. in central london its where people go for a pint after work. its chill, there is either no or quiet music. they look very distinct from the outside, inside is usually always wooden. they have names like "the red lion" "the shakespears head" "the viaduct" "the black horse" etc. people go to their local pub to have a sunday roast.
pubs look like pic rel.

so culturally having some pints at the pub is just youll be sitting drinking and talking (of course there are random lively nights and also on special occasions) also people will go to the pub for pre drinks before they go to a bar/club, because drinks in the pub are probably cheaper, they'll leave the pub at 11 or 12, when the pub stops serving drinks, then closes, to go on to a bar/club.
then i guess bar to nightclub is basicallya spectrum of the louder the music is and the later it closes the more of a nightclub it is, they're usually more modern looking, probably serve cocktails, music is louder, there are less seats, theres a dancefloor type area, and theyre open till late, there may be an entry fee, you go here to chat up some SLAGS. which you can do in the pub also but the bar/club is just more appropriate.
an example of a bar chain (there are better independent bars than this shite im just using it as an example) would be like, be at one, turtle bay... stuff like that.
the inbetween a club and a bar is like The Roxy, Simmons Bar, which close at like 3-4.
then a nightclub is like Fabric, which is open till 6am.

honestly im retarded i hope someone comes in and refines what i said to make it more clear

Unironically NYC. Visited in the summer of 2018. I still can't fathom that every hotel just dumps their disgusting black trash bags right in front of their main entrance. The smell was unbearable. Our room was somewhere on the 20th floor facing the street and on some days we could still smell that disgusting shit. It wasn't all bad, though. NYC High Line was amazing and they have some pretty good food if you wander off the beaten tourist path.

In general, USA has been my favorite travel destination so far. Food is amazing and people (esp. retail workers) are beyond friendly. Can't wait to go back for my first ever Thanksgiving this year. If only you fucks had a working social security system and getting a working visa wasn't that hard I'd love to live in the US for a couple of years.

Czechia.

The historical architecture was worth it, but basically everything else was a letdown, dilapidated and/or catering to tourists too obviously. It's as if the country has little substance besides pleasing travellers.
>>
>>2100764
>If only you fucks had a working social security system and getting a working visa wasn't that hard
It's like that BECAUSE of these things. The US is still a high trust society, one reason for that is because its hard to get in. Americans see others as having a shared experience and the same values. That's changing though. Work and consumption are incentivized not disincentivized through government policy. Self-reliance is idealized. Employers are free to dismiss those with a sour disposition because employment is "at will."

Richmond, Virginia. I wasn't expecting much but I wasn't expecting one of the most unredeemable cities I've been in. At least other cities have "the nice area" or some attraction like nightlife or music to salvage a bad experience. Richmond has nothing. There isn't nothing unique or interesting about Richmond.
Runner up is New Haven. The only reason New Haven isn't the most disappointing is because they have really good food, there's nothing else there though.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas. My biggest surprise and one of my top places to ever go is Linesville, Pennsylvania. Also Santorini is NOT bad and is only slightly more expensive than other islands. You will NOT be disappointed if you go there, it's one of those places on Earth which are completely worth it and are popular for a reason, like Venice etc.
However pretty much any Med island is great because it's the best sea and the best climate.
You can also live in Athens and go to Saronic islands and it would be almost as nice.

Haven't been to some of the more common places itt like London or Paris. Of the places I've visited, most disappointing was by far Denver. I had really high expectations especially with the nearby mountains, only to find out it was an overcrowded mess with shit people. The traffic is horrible and god forbid you try driving into the mountains on a weekend. I would compare the traffic to rush hour in LA but honestly Denver's weekend "ski rush" traffic might have been worse. A drive that should no more than an hour and a half to get to the nearest ski resort could take well over 4 hours on a weekend. The food varied from pretty good to god-awful. The architecture is also shit. It's just like a combination of brick boxes from the 1940s and globohomo angular abominations. The worst thing though was the Air Quality. I couldn't even see the mountains from my hotel on some days and it was the middle of winter. The air smelled like shit, but there weren't any wildfires producing smoke or anything. The only place where I've seen haze like that is LA. I'm a huge ski bum and /xs/ bro who skis probably 1/4th of the days of the year and I still hated it. The ski resorts were the only saving grace and I was still left pretty disappointed.
If you ever find yourself wanting to go to Denver save yourself the misery and go to Boulder instead. It does everything Denver does but better, and unlike Denver I actually enjoyed my time there.
>>
>>2103096

True. I don't know why I had such high expectations for it. I guess I thought that since I was super into skiing I thought I'd find people I had a lot in common with there, but all I found were thots and faggots whose only interest in skiing was to go up the lift once to get a picture for instagram and then call it a day after one run. Sometimes they wouldn't even SKI down. I swear Breck and Aspen were the only resorts I've been to where I regularly saw people taking the lift down instead of skiing/boarding to the bottom. SLC was a little less like this but after seeing it I swear in 5 years it will be exactly as Denver is today. There is no such thing as a "ski town" anymore, just California-gentrified urban centers where skiing happens to be a thing that less than 1% of the population is even remotely interested in. I am truly alone on this barren earth.

Hanoi is cool though, it has a bohemian undercurrent that's really cool and the 1000 year history really comes through. Da Nang is the obvious choice for cool city to live, with Da Lat a great place that's more laid back and relaxed up in the mountains. I have to agree with this. I flew from America to Bali. I don't like renting motorbikes and I did not want to spend $80+ for a bus tour. It sounds lame to some but I like merely wandering around and stumbling onto activities in the locations I travel to. Bali was not fun to walk around. I was there for an entire week, most of it spent in the hotel. You are held hostage for activities to do by your hotel staff, sorta like Cambodia. Looking back, I wish I gave them $200 or so to do all the tours cause staying at the island, in vanilla, is a no go. It was also quite dirty and had this "live, laugh, love" inauthentic hindu stuff plastered all over it. I heard Australians love it, but it just was not for me.

I agree that American cities are not culturally identical, but they are still culturally similar. There are zero cities outside of America that are like cities in America. Many people swear by it, I did it and have no inclination to do it again.

only thing here worth going to is rockies/grand canyon, while avoiding the tourist trap areas

LA / NY / disneyland is a meme

California was the biggest dicotomy

I visited 10 years ago, most beautiful place I could ever imagine, lived in Berkeley and the big broad streets and just generally nice vibe of the place was fantastic.. Everyone was super nice and had interesting shops and things to see everywhere.
Literally dreamed of living there.

10 years later I come back. Everyone seems miserable, it's dirty as FUCK everywhere, and people are literally laying around with needle in their arms on the street.
There where still very beautiful parts of the city, but that certainly was a very jarring experince.

I didn't visit the nature areas this time around, but I would love to and REALLY hope they are not being corrupted like the rest of the surronding areas.

Naples Italy.
Get off the train station and Nigerian trannies are in your face trying to aggressively sell you a selfie stick for 10 euros.

Everything closed early. No real beauty. The only redeeming quality was good pizza. We got the fuck out and went to Amalfi instead.

yeah don't go to that one town they built on it, grab a tent and go camp near the watchtower
small gift shop, parking lot, and a bunch of camping grounds

I didn't think much about it until I roadtripped through it with some friends a few years ago
I think everyone should see it at least once, it's so massive that pictures can't do it justice

I married a Slovak and she’s pretty great. Very independent and strong willed yet very feminine at the same time. Very open and giving in bed, would recommend.

I fell for the Budapest meme
